I have been doing a major remodel on my house for about 1 year now and have had plumbers, electricians, dry wallers, painters, tile workers, etc., in my house. Amongst all of these numerous workers I have had in my home, the installers from Top Wood shutters are BY FAR THE WORST PEOPLE I have had to deal with. They were extremely rude, inconsiderate, messy, and worst of all, they argued with me and yelled at me with my with my wife, son, and father all in the house. During the installation, they were sanding some wood on my front porch. It was creating a lot of dust that was coming in through the front door. I asked them to please close the door when you are sanding. Of course, they did not close the door as they continued to sand. I asked them again to please close the door, and they yelled back at me, "I did!" Yet somehow, we were having this conversation through an open door. As they were installing the blinds in my master bedroom, I noticed a lot of cracks in some of the framing. I asked the installer why these brand new shutters had cracks in the paint. He merely said to me that it's not a problem and continued to install the shutters while brushing me off. The installers were very careless and clumsy. They constantly kept banging the shutter framing into my window casings (chipping the paint) and into the dry wall (chipping the dry wall)(Please see picture that I uploaded). The worst part of it was that THEY MADE A MESS! There were pieces of styrofoam everywhere. There was touch up paint spilled on my new carpet. There was caulking everywhere. There was caulking on my rugs, caulking on my carpet, caulking on my new custom window bench, caulking on my hardwood floors, and caulking all over my drapes (see picture). Just awful, careless work that they take no pride in. When I asked them about all the mess that they made, they again brushed me off and quickly left. I was floored. I was left to myself to clean up their mess. Naturally, I called the office manger, Hank, the next day to express my concerns. He did apologize and said he would bring it up with the owner. I also spoke to the sales rep, Jacky, that I was working with. He was not very apologetic and said that he would speak to the owner also. I told them how upset I was and how disappointed I was in the entire Top Wood Shutters company. I told them how unhappy I was and asked them, "What are you going to do to fix this?" I got an email a couple of days later. For all my trouble and the hours I spent cleaning up the mess the installers made, they offered me a $30 credit towards the next time I get shutters with them.......REALLY? I just spent over $3000 on shutters on my house and you're offering me a less than 1% discount on a future job? Pathetic. I emailed them back that this is not acceptable and this offer is not representative of the trouble I had to go through. I haven't heard anything back from them since my reply. I called Jacky and emailed him again, and he still has not contacted me back (it has been over a week). I called Hank again, and again, he said Jacky would call me. They never called. I was introduced here by a friend who got his house done three years back. It's located in a warehouse district so you have to look for the small parking lot with the entrance. They have a warehouse in the back but all the shutters are made in China, I believe. They offer different material composition but when buying shutters, the best is solid bass wood because its light but strong and pretty durable. Top Wood offers to stain their wood to match whatever you want (but at an extra charge) too. The standard ones come painted white. Outside mounts only need to be ballpark with the size, since you won't be able to see if its an inch or two bigger than the window. Inside mounts require exact measurements so if you pick that, they'll have to come out and do exact measurements. The pricing is about $13.50 per square feet plus labour. You can install them yourself and save on labour but you'll lose out on the lifetime warrantly. Short of banging on the shutters with a sledgehammer, they'll cover just about all problems with the shutters- paint peels, parts problems, etc. You can try to negotiate if you're buying more. I'm a bit further but we worked out something where they swung by after doing another house in Huntington Beach. One helper and one main guy came in a big pick up with the windows and their supplies. I had three windows done and it took them about 30 minutes total, including time spent cleaning up. They caulk around the edges too, so good attention to detail. I did notice that the paint spraying on one of the windows missed an edge on the second coat, but Mike (the guy I talked to) said they'd be out soon to replace the shutter. Hopefully it won't be long. All in all, a good deal for good quality. read more

Extremely disappointed. I spent a lot of money at this place. We purchased shutters and verticals for our home in Temple City. We were very happy, so naturally when we moved to San Dimas we never considered calling any other company. Bill the owner remembered me and we purchased shutters for the whole house minus one half round window over the door. That was four years ago. Recently my wife and I decided to order shutters for that one window. I called and agreed on a price of $668.00. But then I was told by Bill he would have to charge an extra $390.00 to install. He suggested I do it myself. He said its not worth it for him to send an installer to San Dimas (15miles). I offered to pay the installer cash on the side $150.00, He declined. Said the best he could do was $285.00. Well so much for loyalty. I called a company in Ontario, US Shutters and blinds. They will do it for $650 installed. After it is complete I will rate them and hopefully refer them in the future. By the way Top Wood shutters are all made in China, Which means a 8-10 week wait on special orders.They arrive by ship. Not even after nine months, two of the shutters broke. one of the workers there offered a ten year warranty. when We went back to exchange the broken pieces, she refused to give it to us. She offered us a piece of plastic that is used to reinforce the blinds for THREE dollars a piece. We later bought a box of those reinforcements for only six bucks. Response to vendor's comments: Hi B.Y., When I purchased my shutters, your company did not advise that you do not manufacture your own shutters and that any repairs would have to be shipped back to the actual manufacturer at my expense, including that I would have to personally disassemble the shutters and package up and ship back. Who would have expected this type of warranty service? To this day, the shutters are still unchanged in their defective state since I have no idea how to disassemble and ship these huge shutters (we have a big house with very large windows). Your response is actually a clear confirmation of how your company operates, to pass responsibility onto the 'manufacturer' so you do not have to handle. It would have been the right thing for you to come out, disassemble, and ship back to the manufacturer at your expense. Most companies do not manufacture their own products but they are responsible to handling defects by being the middle man. That is essentially what your company is selling as a whole saler, the service....clearly you lack that. As well, yes Yelp said my original post violated policies since I named first and last names of employees. This type of removal only happens when Yelp is paid by vendor to resolve and possibly remove bad posts. Anyone can google 'my Yelp bad review was removed' and see a ton of posts where others go through the same thing. If anyone wants to take a chance on this company because of their competitive prices, take your chances and just hope you get lucky with no defects. You get what you pay for in the lack of service. I spent almost $10,000 on shutters through Top Wood Shutter with lifetime warranty and it has been a nightmare ever since. They installed all the shutters and obviously, I cannot fully inspect every shutter in detail until they are gone. After detail review, I discovered many issues including big gaps between shutter panels when they are closed, cracked louvers, bubbles in the paint, frames or seams not caulked so looks unfinished, etc. When I reported these issues, Mike came out to inspect the issues. My wife was not finished showing him all the issues. He took a few pictures and just rushed off. Two weeks later, we get an email that we needed to fill out a form indicating all the damage. We filled it out. After that, I get this email stating I have to uninstall the shutters myself and take the panels to the manufacturer in Long Beach. I live about 100 miles away from Long Beach. I have lifetime warranty and expected Top Wood to handle any issues with the manufacturer. They said it was not an installation issue but a manufacturing issue and I have to deal with the manufacturer myself. Below is part of my email correspondence with them. I have removed my name for privacy. I threatened that I would sue them and write negative reviews on Angie's list, Yelp and BBB. They initially responded that under this circumstance, they will waive the trip charge and take it to the manufacturer for me. I then clarified whether they will also pick up from manufacturer and reinstall them. That's when someone named Hank responded and said they have changed their mind and will NOT waive the trip charge and I am on my own. They put the shutters into my windows and I already paid them 50% of what I owe, but when it came time to pay the other half they only gave us 30 minutes to get the money and pay them but we needed a little bit longer than 30 minutes so they took the shutters down out of the windows and said they would put it back up when I pay and charge additional money.... they also did not do a good job of installing it and when we paid for the good quality shutters they gave us the bad quality ones. I have never ever given any place a one star review before but I always use Yelp and felt I should warm my fellow yelpers. BEWARE!!! I don't want anyone to go through what we unfortunately had to go through. Pat L was obviously right in his review but it was my mistake not checking on Yelp before I went with this company. Wood shutters are typically expensive and we went with this company mostly because it was cheap. But unfortunately, you get what you pay for. They were nice initially, of course because they are trying to get your business. They took measurements, told us they could do what we wanted and the price was good. We didn't have any concerns until after we paid... First issue is the quality. From a glance, the shutters look ok. But who wants them to only look fine from across the room when of course you will be opening and closing them daily to let light in or out. It wasn't until I took a closer look that I also saw cracks in the wood shutter, chips in the paint and problems with the framing and seams. I noticed this during the installation and the installer simply ignored me, then when I mentioned it again, he just handed me a tiny jar of touch up paint to do it myself! It looked like the old school whiteout paint I used as a kid when I messed up writing in pen. Also they fail to mention that there is a strong paint/plastic smell from the shutters that didn't go away. When I contacted them, they said just give it a few weeks. I'm not that sensitive to smell, but it gave me a headache. It's also a little more concerning since the shutters are from China and it made me think of past concerns with China over lead paint. But this can't be an issue anymore since the US addressed it years ago with them right? :-/ As I write this, I realize I need to go to Home Depot now to get the test for lead paint. It's not worth the risk to anyone's health and time and cost of medical expenses for cheap shutters. Next issue is the customer service. It was like a bad movie. I still can't believe how bad they were. The installers that came into our home were just so awful and rude. One took a person 30 minute phone call in the middle of caulking the shutters. The reason I know it was a personal cal was because he didn't leave to take the call and he put it on speakerphone while shouting back during the entire call. This is still Nordstrom level customer service compared to everything else though. Second, they chipped and dinged the window molding and walls around all the windows that they installed the shutters in. We had recently painted our new house so I knew there wasn't any scratches or defects as we just moved in. Third and this is the most disturbing and disgusting, the men were filthy. I know most people don't like installers and repairmen to use their bathroom and now I understand why. First they didn't even ask but decided to use all three bathrooms in the house. Apparently they had to pee after each bedroom install? The reason I know they used all the bathrooms was there was a trail of wet paint and caulk all over our hardwood floors, carpet and tiles throughout the entire house that I had to clean up after. They even refused to clean up at all after their installation. We asked them aren't you going to clean up before you leave and they said, we are installers not cleaners and rushed out the door after arguing with us. There was sawdust and plaster dust everywhere in our house and outside our front door where they were using their power tools. While cleaning up I found more paint and caulk over all of our curtains. And here's the grossest part, there was pee all over the toilet seat and bathroom floor and even a pubic hair on the toilet seat. We may have saved money on getting cheap shutters but the cost it will take to patch and paint all their scratches, and to clean our curtains and carpet completely did not outweigh the cost savings. Not to mention the emotional turmoil of having someone do this in your own home. I had to spend three hours on my hands and knees cleaning after they left and still haven't had a chance to get the carpet, curtain cleaned or the walls repaired and painted. Given the trail of pee and paint they left, I'm sure the carpet, curtains and shutters also have pee on them too. We tried to contact the manager/owner to discuss these issue but to no avail. I only hope that I can protect my fellow Yelpers from making the same mistake I did. read more

My review is not for installation or shutters. I've ordered horizontal blinds for self-installation from them and their level of service was great. I called to get a quote, couple of other places I've called wouldn't give quotes over the phone (really)... I've knew my measurements and Top Wood Shutters specifies on their website how to properly measure. Customer Service was great, and was called back shortly with the price ranges for products requested. I went ahead and place the order, it came back on the time-frame stated. The company had good service in notifying as soon as the product arrived. I am happy with the purchase, they were easy to install, feel sturdy, hardware included, and look great, not the embossed look on the fauxwood like other blinds i have, but being 2.5" wide and no holes for the string look better and let more light in. And better pricing than big box retailers since you order the size you need rather than buying big and cutting to size. read more

For the most part, this place offers one of the lowest prices but offers HORRIBLE customer service. They are very eager to take your money but do not warranty their work. They came out during the week to install my shutters and since i was not home when they came out, I noticed one panel was shorter than the others. They never returned to repair it, its been 2 months and I'm still waiting. I spoke to Camille on two occasions and she continuously lied about having a repair person call me. I had a couple other estimates and theirs was the lowest. I did have to wait a little longer than I was told but that was due to problems at the port which was out of their control. This is a response to the comment the owner left on my previous review. I would like to start by saying, that the owner refuses to take ANY responsibility regarding the product's poor quality. In his comment, he not only CLAIMED that he provided me with the resources necessary to fix issue on MY OWN, but also that it was MY FAULT because according to him, this is a "simple" problem. If it's so "simple", I honestly don't understand why you cannot provide proper customer service by coming to my house to FIX IT. Is that really too much to ask? I didn't ask for you to reinstall the blinds nor am I asking you for a COMPLETE refund. I'm not being unreasonable. Now, on to the finishing thoughts of my review. I'll give you a step by step as to WHY I am disappointed by your TERRIBLE customer service. 1) You cannot use the law requirement as an excuse to cover your merchandise quality problem. 2) Up to this point, no employee has explained to me how to use your product. At all. Your employees installed the blinds, took the money, and left my house. That was it. They never took the time to explain/even mentioned a video about how to use the product. Never. Why did you not provide the video to me right after I purchased the product? Why are only providing me this information now that problem has occurred? I find it completely insulting that you claimed to provide me with the information I needed to use the blinds. In reality, you never did that. In other words, you're lying. 3) I called the company several times. Notice, I CALLED THE COMPANY several times. Only two people, Mike and Cecelia, answered the phone when I called. Very unhelpful. Both employees, mockingly, claimed that I could solve this problem on my own. I asked for the manager. Both Mike and Cecelia told me that they are the managers. In other words, they did not provide me with answers or a solution. They completely disregarded the issue and claimed that it was MY OWN PROBLEM and that it has nothing to do with them. 5) When I asked for the manager, Mike, told me that he was the manager. Then I asked to talk to his higher up. He had the nerve to tell me that the boss has NO TIME to talk to me and that the boss cannot be bothered by such a SMALL ISSUE. Outrageous. Horrible. Horrible. I would never ever use this place again. When I went there, I was promised good quality and good service. When they came to my house to install the shutters, they left uneven edges, nails protruding from the windows, and gaps between the wall and the frames. I had to remind them to seal those gaps. Guess what they said,"well, this is how we do it." Now, less than a year later, the shutters are broken! The joints where all the wood panels connect are falling apart. So, I called the place to find out if they could send someone to fix the shutters. The guy over the phone with last name Young was so rude. He basically told me that if I ever wanted to get them fix, then I better just wait for them to call me cause they are "just too busy to install shutters in other places." He then told me to just not open the windows and not use the shutters. Yeah, that is their so called customer service. When I asked him for the specific timelines, he said even if he came to my house to fix those shutters, he was going to have an attitude anyway. No, I was not joking, he literally said that. Top Wood Shutters installed our plantation shutters several years ago. They did a very good job; professional, courteous and a good value for the price. But what I am really impressed with is the contact I had today with Julie at Top Wood. One of the slats of our bedroom shutter came loose and was hanging down. I called and was asked to send photos of the shutter with the broken slat. Minutes later I received a call from Julie and within an hour and a half someone came out to fix it. She let me know there was a workman in my area and he would stop by after he finished what he was working on. That is the best customer service I've ever had, anywhere, anytime. Thank you Top Wood. I purchased some wooden blinds for my remodel and I was not ready to install them until 6 months later. I opened the larger blind and low and behold, the frame is bent. The blinds were nearly packaged with thick bubble wrap and boxed up well so there is no possibility that I could have bent it. They had been neatly stored in my garage undisturbed. I informed top wood shutters and they said I must open boxes 10 days after purchasing. Otherwise they can't be returned. I explained my circumstances and they refused to replace blind. I explained it does not say anything on my invoice about 10 days but they still refused. Piss poor customer service and satisfaction guaranteed. I will be informing Alan Mendleson (who recommended) and not be promoting these blinds to anyone. read more

This is my second time buying shutters from Top Wood Shutters. The first time I bought their shutters was 8 years ago. I was really satisfied because they used 100% solid wood and shutters look still good until now. Some of the magnets cracked because of constant sun exposure and most companies wouldn't take responsibility of it because it's been over a year, but Top Wood Shutters immediately mailed me new magnets and I'm very thankful for their service. I just bought a second house, and I decided to order their shutters again, because I have no doubts that they will have very good service and shutters. read more
