I recommend it in the genre of "post moma food," which is my special term for restaurants one can go to after seeing a film wIth a friend at moma theatre (other restaurant In this genre: bengal tiger). my friend and I were seated in the window corner, private and tucked away from the rest. She had a rice plate all done up in pristine form like a cake, I had my go to pad Thai. The flavors were right. Not the cheapest or the most atmospheric (it's midtown), but there is something intimate about it, the yellow signage out front & the dark wooden paneling inside. Amazing Thai food! When we came around 7pm on a Saturday night the line of course seemed long, but it only took about 10 minutes before the host seated us. We ordered Thai milk tea, green curry w/ chicken, and beef drunken noodles. As a starter they brought out complimentary fried puff crackers which had a peanut flavored dip. The curry was deliciously infused with coconut and basil, however the amount of rice they gave was far too little. As for the noodles I thought the portion would be much bigger, but besides that the dish was nicely cooked. One of the BEST Thai restaurants I have been to anywhere in the US. The swimming duck had a half deboned duck that was both crispy skin and tender meat on a bed of veggies with a rich coconut curry. You want extra rice or a side of noodles to soak up all the delicious sauce. Masaman curry was just the right balance of spice, richness, salty, and sweet. Be careful of the bill. Needed a place to go in midtown with family and chanced on Topaz. The Thai food isn't bad at all and the portions are huge so the prices are excellent. The tricky thing is that they included an 18% gratuity for our party of four into the itemized receipt. But on the signature copy for the restaurant, they then included a suggested tip amount on TOP of the gratuity total. A $70 bill was suddenly near $100. Usually I just sign and add a 20% tip but 40% is a bit presumptuous and not cool to do. Just a heads up if you're there. read more

I downloaded this app just to leave a review here. When we first walked in, we were standing there wondering what to do with seating. We had to call for a worker to seat us then we could finally look at the menu. When we were seated, the table was very small and we could barely move our arms. It took 10 minutes just to get a waiter and he spilled water on our table. 45 minutes later, my friend laughed at my $20 bowl of rice and my over priced martini. At.the end of the meal, it took us more than 45 minutes to get a check. We called for people to give us a check, but no one seemed to know what we were saying.. Everyone around us was getting their checks besides us.. when we finally got our checks, we left our tips and walked out the door relived to leave. Not even a moment later, a waiter chased us down the street saying we didn't leave a tip when it was on the table. He wouldn't let us leave until both of us gave him more money. This place is a hidden gem and fucking delicious. There are tables and they can accommodate pretty much anyone. They have alcohol and a cute bar in the back. Service is great and the restaurant is super clean. We ordered the spring rolls which were so freaking yummy, they come with 8 mini finger sized rolls and were so crunchy and delicious with the sweet and sour sauce on the side i was in heaven and drooling all over again as i write this. Drunken noodles you can't go wrong and a must, a tang of spicyness to them which i absolutely love! Bravo! We also ordered a curry in a coconut broth with chicken, onions, avocado, and potatoes and this was some of the best curry i have had in a long time, no question i will come back here. 4 of us for dinner last night, we all enjoyed what we ordered, portion size is nice, and the crisps with peanut sauce is nice too. Reasonably priced too, except the meals come with white rice, and there is a $4 extra charge for brown rice. Many Asian places offer this choice with no extra charge. The service staff I thought was a bit odd, maybe 30 seconds or less, after we sat down, the waiter was ready to take our order. And when he brought the bill, he stood there waiting right after he set down the bill. Checking on us during the meal would have been nice too, as we had been seated for maybe 45 minutes or more enjoying our meal, being the only customers in the place. Another thing worth mentioning, the restrooms are through the kitchen with a VERY low ceiling, if you are 6 feet tall, or over, as I am, bending to and from the restroom is recommended, to avoid bumping your head. read more

This thai spot is a hidden gem. I love their decor and the pad thai is my favorite and I always get my thai tea with it. Got dinner here, it is a very nice small place. Empty when we got there and then began to get packed. The chips they serve with the peanut sauce at the beginning was really good. We got the Phad Ka Prow and it is a little spicy, so if you can't handle spicy I would steer away from this dish. Review overview: For this area: ok Thai food at a great price. My parents stay near this place every year and this is their go to restaurant. It's affordable, the food is good and again it's like 2 blocks away. We came on a Saturday about 6:30 PM and the place was packed. We waited for about 25 minutes for our table of three. We sat down and ordered our apps and entrees. Now, maybe I'm just used to Jerz Thai places but entrees here didn't come with rice, soup, salad or anything of the likes. Fine but, really, no rice? My mom's salad (typical of Japanese places with the ginger peanut dressing was $5 and nothing to write home about) my dumplings were a-ok, four little wonton style dumplings that sort of had no flavor when I try to recall but, I remember being like, "hey, these are ok." The entree's are nicely sized and for the $12 price tag, not too shabby. The pad ma graw was filled with thinly pounded chicken slices and vegetables swimming in more oil than flavor and spice but, still tasty. The $2 add for rice makes this dish about $14 and though hearty, by no means is this the tastiest Thai food. My mom's butterflied prawns at $17 were delicious but expensive for the 8 prawns (with shells still on). But, at the end of the night, we walked outta the restaurant $20 a head and were filled with a spicy Thai meal. Will we come back? Yes most definitely. This area is rip off city and to find a place that serves up solid food at a great price is a gem. Would I recommend to anyone go out of their way for this? Definitely not. Yeebus - This place is sure taking a hit for their service! I honestly didn't think it was as bad as people make it out to be. We were seated right away, cups of iced water on the table within a minute and orders taken right when we closed our menus. No fuss and they got everything correct on the order! Tom Kha Gai - Chicken in coconut milk soup, with galangar onions mushrooms - 4 stars! The soup came out PIPING HOT and taste was terrific... smooth, creamy with that bit of tart from the onions and mushrooms. Plentiful with the chicken....Every spoonful had lots of ingredients. My only disappointment was that they didn't have the elephant mushrooms that are usually common in this soup and the presentation was a bit unappealing at first. Red Curry - Chicken with coconut milk, bamboo, shoot, onions, green pepper and basil leaves - $10.75 - 4 stars - Again, preparation of the sauce was on point and it wasn't TOO spicy. Just the perfect amount. Very creamy, rich and you can taste the basil complementing the curry. Plentiful with ingredients. I just wish that it came with rice but this isn't uncommon I suppose. A girl can hope. Drunken Noodle - Broad noodle stir fried with spicy basil leaves, sauce, onions, eggs, scallions and Chinese broccoli - $10.50 - 5 stars! We asked the server for a recommendation and this was what he said....he was right! This was DELICIOUS and my favorite order of the evening. The noodles were cooked perfectly and seasoned so that every bite was a taste of spicy basil and their drunken "sauce." The pork is similar to Chinese style chau sew and I couldn't stop eating. Dancing Chicken - Minced chicken with fresh Thai basil leaves and chili paste; served with white or brown rice - $12.95 - 3.5 stars and the minced chicken was well marinated and VERY juicy chicken. Obviously I love basil and this dish was oozing with the flavor. Pair this with the chili paste and you have a perfectly spiced traditional Thai dish. You can't beat this place! Very affordable restaurant that's close to pretty much everything you wanna be close to during the holiday season. Came here for lunch with my good brown friend to do our annual Christmas gift exchange, and we were both very pleased with the overall experience. Ask to sit in the little cubby hole spot for two that is to your immediate left as soon as you walk in. Luckily, we just got there before the end of their lunch special, and we ended up sharing curry puffs to start. They were really light, fluffy, and had this wonderful flavoring that made my empty stomach very happy. My friend asked if we could get some more sauce that was lightly drizzled underneath the puffs, but the waiter insisted we have them just as is; they know what they're talking about. I can't resist a Drunken Man Noodle, so I had that, and my friend had the Pad Thai. I was very pleased with the both of them based on presentation, cost, tastiness, and portion. Is it possible that i leave for a few months and come back to NY craving this awesome Thai food? Yes, for Topaz I make an exception. Do you ever order calamri thinking it's nice and puffy and crispy and get a plate full of chewy squid dipped in medium grade bread crumbs not fit for a peasant? ( okay, slight exaggeration) How bout this- your mouth is watering for that tempura-like calamari and you get this heavy, oily breaded stuff. Not here. It's almost japanese- fluffy light calamari with a nice white and red sauce, i have no clue what it is and I'm no fan of mayonnaise, but dude, this sauce rocks. Anything that causes me, a grammar freak, to write ten run-on sentences is worth trying. It's really close to Carnegie Hall and the old NY convention center, and one side of central park, as well as the Park Central Hotel, Wellington Hotel, etc. I've given you all the description you need to find your way here with your eyes closed. Now go eat there. Oh! And also, it feels like a boat inside. Cramped. Or, as they say in NY, cozy. There are two seats near the entrance that are very awkward- the window seat where all the passersby can watch you eat in a very small room, and the seat directly in front of the entrance, where all waiting customers can stare at your food and date without shame because the waiting room is so tiny. read more
