My team came to topaz for a group lunch and words pleasantly surprised by the great service and quickly delivered dishes. Though they arrive at different times it seems they make sure that they deliver them as they are coming out of the kitchen to assure freshness. I tried the Topaz fried rice with shrimp and it was very good (not greasy, a good lunch size portion). A few others at the table had pad see you and it looked amazing. Really would give it 3.5. The restaurant is quite small and crowds easy, hard to make it to the door or bathroom without bumping into other patrons or servers (this was 9pm on a Friday). A good lunch place. Prices are fair, food is good, portions weren't too big and has a nice cozy atmosphere. The place feels a bit underground and has dimmed lights. A bit odd to walk into in the middle of the day, but it worked for me. I went there with co-workers during lunch time. We all enjoyed the food we ordered and the portions. I especially like that like in many Thai places there were vegetables with every meal and they were accommodating of special dietary requests. Our only critique of the place was that the food didn't come out at the same time. Really disorganized. We came in after seeing a show on broadway. They sat us but didn't give us any menus. Then about ten minutes later, someone came up and asked us if we were ready to order. I said we haven't gotten menus yet. They give us menus and we decide on what we want. Then someone comes back and says that they shut down the kitchen at 930. It was 945 by this point, but probably before 930 when we walked in. I was like, we'll be quick. There were still several diners in the restaurant. She's like that's what everyone says but the kitchen is closed, but you can order to go. Well, if the kitchen is closed, how can I order to go? It's either closed or it's open for cooking whether I'm here in the restaurant or ordering to go. It's just frustrating bc if you closed, then say you're closed. Don't have us sitting there for 10 minutes, give us menus, then say you're closed. At that point, you should have served us if it was your mistake for seating us in the first place. And for god sakes, this is Manhattan. Who does last call at 930 in Midtown? Your crazy. This place was great! It was only a few blocks from The Plaza on 5th ave (where I was staying) and I called to make a reservation about half hour before on a Friday night. The host was friendly and had a table waiting on us. The space is small but clean and well-kept. I ordered the cucumber salad - it was delicious and fresh. The vinegar dressing on the salad was really really good. Light and not overdone but just enough to give a little tang to the salad. I ordered, as I usually do, the chicken pad thai. Mmmmm! The curry was really flavorful, but the potatoes in it were really hard and inedible. I also found a small hair at the bottom of my rice dish :( The standout was actually the dessert, a Thai Sundae, which they explained had very authentic Thai ingredients. Came here tonight with my friend and two colleagues visiting from England. What an awesome little place to take them to! We were looking for Thai food, so I pulled up Yelp, and this was the first recommendation in the NYC area when we were next to radio city. I had the Little Mermaid shrimp, and they were amazing. The dumplings were on point, the pad Thai was delish, lovely bird in the nest is highly recommended by our colleague, and the rainbow noodles are very delicious and filling. They still sort of pressured me into staying at this restaurant than the Noodle Bar because they claimed they had the same food + more. The restaurant itself is very dimly lit - not my favorite type of lighting as it makes everyone feel pretty tired. My cousin and I ordered the curry puffs to start and she had the chicken massaman curry and I had the chicken drunken noodle. First thing we noticed were how large the portion sizes were - she was shocked at the amount of curry she got. I really enjoyed my drunken noodle dish - was one of the better ones I've had. It was flavorful and had that spicy kick. Her curry was a bit too sweet and we took most of it to go - not sure we'd get this one again. I recently visited this restaurant with the intention to have an amazing family dining experience. The restaurant aesthetic was simple on the inside and outside. Their food was tasty too, however simplicity and taste are not good enough reasons to say I REALLY enjoyed this restaurant. Based on my experience at this establishment 1 star is even too much. For starters, prior to visiting this restaurant I made a reservation 2 days in advance. After traveling a half hour with young children and waiting 10 minutes to speak with the hostess, I was told I never made a reservation. The minute I said "Hi, I have a reservation" I was cut off by the hostess and she rudely said "I said no reservations. I said walk ins only." She did not even care to hear that I made the reservation 2 days in advance. I was told that we would have to wait 15 minutes for a table, which did not seem like much until it turned into 45 minutes! When we finally sat down, we were placed at a table for 7 when we had a party of 8. It was my mistake however the waiter RUDELY said "I have no chairs. You said 7." I understood my mistake, however, there were plenty of chairs outdoors that were NOT being used. If the waiter truly cared about his customer he would have went outside and brought one in. After waiting an hour to be seated, the waiter brought some water and left for 20 minutes to help other parties that came in AFTER mine. When we call a waiter over, he was very rude. He was upset we were not giving him the order fast enough. At this point, it was clear that the restaurant LACKS customer service skills. The waiter later on brought out our meals at DIFFERENT times and one was MISSING. When we told the waiter he got very defensive and made it seem like HIS mistake was OUR fault. The last meal to come out was meant to be shared with a 5 year old. It was truly ridiculous. Upon leaving the restaurant, the hostess came back to speak with us. When I explained to her the initial reason for being upset, she said that she did NOT care and that she does NOT want us back at the restaurant. Before completing this review, I would like to mention how "sanitary" this restaurant is by keeping the customer restroom INSIDE the kitchen. I'm truly disgusted with this establishment and I truly DO NOT KNOW how they are STILL in business. read more

Great option for a midtown lunch! Two friends and I came in on a Friday for lunch at around 12:45. There was a line out the door and it looked PACKED! Luckily, we only waited for about 10 minutes before we were seated, so don't let the crowd deter you. The food takes about 10-15 minutes to come out. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken. Either my tolerance for spiciness has gone down or this was just SUPER spicy! It was so spicy that I couldn't even finish it. I got it to go. I finished the rest of it at the office and discovered LOTS of jalapeños. If it was a little toned down, the dish would have been perfect for me. i also ordered the Thai iced tea, which was too sweet for me. But then again, I'm not a big fan of sweets. (I know, I know....what kind of girl am I!) The whole lunch session took about an hour from waiting to paying, so it's perfect for us 9-5ers. It's easy to overlook the restaurant as you have to take stairs to get to the front door (I'm not sure if there's a wheelchair accessible entrance). The ambiance inside was very nice. A lot of the reviews mention that it's dark, but I feel like that adds to the dining experience along with the beautiful decor. We were seated immediately around 9:45 PM and the server told us that we had five minutes to place an order. According to the restaurant's signage and Yelp page, the restaurant closes at 11:00 PM; however, they were announcing last call around 9:50 PM. Three parties walked in between 10:00 PM - 10:15 PM and were given the option of ordering to go or leaving. The service was very rushed despite us arriving an hour prior to closing. On the other hand, the food was delicious! Dancing Chicken (Minced chicken with fresh Thai basil and chili paste served with white rice and Chinese broccoli) - This was my favorite dish of the meal! I almost always order this whenever I eat Thai cuisine and Topaz's may have become my absolute favorite! The flavor was perfectly balanced out by the spices and the basil and it wasn't too salty. The portion was relatively large and perfect for sharing between two people. Pad See Eew - We chose tofu as our choice of "meat" and was given the option of having it fried or steamed. Of course I had to go with the fried option and it was the best decision ever! The sauce to noodle ratio was on point and they didn't skimp on the Chinese broccoli. The medium leveled spice was just the right amount and balanced out with the sweeter taste from the black bean sauce. Chicken Satay - Although it's an appetizer, the chicken satay was actually the last item to come out. The chicken seemed to be overcooked and seemed rubbery, but the peanut sauce and traditional cucumber salad that it was served with was tasty. Less than five minutes after receiving our food (10:05 PM), the server gave us our check and started rushing the two other parties that were eating.
