I enjoyed my meal here, in general, I'd say it is hard to find good Thai food in Manhattan but I thought the flavors here were solid. The restaurant has been open 20 years and is still going strong, the night that my party arrived, it was packed. I wouldn't say this was the most authentic Thai but good food is still good food. The food: Curry Puff- Puff pastry stuffed with ground chicken, potatoes, onions, curry powder served with cucumber salad. I thought the flavor on this was good and I really liked the texture of the dough. I enjoyed the filling as well but I did find it to be on the skimpy side. And this being the non traditional part, whenever you get this in Thailand, the cucumber salad is served in a cup on the side, it was kinda unusual to see it made as a bed with the puffs on top. My team came to topaz for a group lunch and words pleasantly surprised by the great service and quickly delivered dishes. Though they arrive at different times it seems they make sure that they deliver them as they are coming out of the kitchen to assure freshness. I tried the Topaz fried rice with shrimp and it was very good (not greasy, a good lunch size portion). A few others at the table had pad see you and it looked amazing. A good lunch place. Prices are fair, food is good, portions weren't too big and has a nice cozy atmosphere. The place feels a bit underground and has dimmed lights. A bit odd to walk into in the middle of the day, but it worked for me. I went there with co-workers during lunch time. We all enjoyed the food we ordered and the portions. I especially like that like in many Thai places there were vegetables with every meal and they were accommodating of special dietary requests. Our only critique of the place was that the food didn't come out at the same time. Really would give it 3.5. The restaurant is quite small and crowds easy, hard to make it to the door or bathroom without bumping into other patrons or servers (this was 9pm on a Friday). I got the massaman curry which was delicious and came fast. The fried tofu was a little tough but maybe I should've gotten the steamed instead? UPDATE as of 8/10/2022: I received a phone call from one of the managers, named Sandy I believe - not only was Sandy very apologetic for the behavior of her staff member, she even offered to set up a meeting with the owner to see how they could rectify this situation. The apologies were totally sincere, and I accepted the apology. We also discussed that all I really want is to make sure something like this doesn't happen again, and Sandy agreed. I appreciate that they took this situation VERY seriously and immediately contacted me. This place was great! It was only a few blocks from The Plaza on 5th ave (where I was staying) and I called to make a reservation about half hour before on a Friday night. The host was friendly and had a table waiting on us. The space is small but clean and well-kept. I ordered the cucumber salad - it was delicious and fresh. The vinegar dressing on the salad was really really good. Light and not overdone but just enough to give a little tang to the salad. I ordered, as I usually do, the chicken pad thai. Mmmmm! It was good! My friend ordered the pork fried rice which was well-prepared and fresh with lots of carrots, scallions, and tomatoes. It was a pretty large portion. Can't believe it's located in my old neighborhood and I didn't come here for Thai food. Get the papaya salad! This is like must-have dish at this place. After the salad, I had shrimp Pad Tao Kak, Hubby had Pad Thai and his friend had Tofu Pad Tao Kak. My dish comes with a bowl of white rice. The food was good but I thought the sauce was a little too sweet. The spices on the side include dried grind-chili and wet grind-chili (red). Pad Thai on the other hand was perfectly made. Came here tonight with my friend and two colleagues visiting from England. What an awesome little place to take them to! We were looking for Thai food, so I pulled up Yelp, and this was the first recommendation in the NYC area when we were next to radio city. I had the Little Mermaid shrimp, and they were amazing. The dumplings were on point, the pad Thai was delish, lovely bird in the nest is highly recommended by our colleague, and the rainbow noodles are very delicious and filling. From the various noodle and rice dishes, you can choose chicken, tofu, vegetable, shrimp or beef. The shrimp and beef will cost you an extra $2. I made a reservation for what I thought was this restaurant on OpenTable, but turned out I was at the wrong spot. They still sort of pressured me into staying at this restaurant than the Noodle Bar because they claimed they had the same food + more. We decided to stay here and cancel my other reservation since there was so much space in the restaurant anyways. The restaurant itself is very dimly lit - not my favorite type of lighting as it makes everyone feel pretty tired. My cousin and I ordered the curry puffs to start and she had the chicken massaman curry and I had the chicken drunken noodle. First thing we noticed were how large the portion sizes were - she was shocked at the amount of curry she got. I really enjoyed my drunken noodle dish - was one of the better ones I've had. It was flavorful and had that spicy kick. Her curry was a bit too sweet and we took most of it to go - not sure we'd get this one again. Although it seemed like a very bad idea, since walking into this place seems like walking into a run-down bar in the middle of nowhere, I was hungry and decided to give it a try. The wooden floor creaks, the wooden panels and cheap light fixtures that line the walls are reminiscent of some dirty nightclub from the '80s that somehow managed to remain open to this day. The one thing that would characterize this dump is the quality of the service. There is none. Absolutely horrendous. The food was bland, the portions were small and the rotten smell of the restaurant did not aid the palate. Since the moment you walk in and take a look at your surroundings, smell the distasteful odor and are greeted by some empty chairs by the entrance, you should turn around and leave. Either my tolerance for spiciness has gone down or this was just SUPER spicy! It was so spicy that I couldn't even finish it. I got it to go. I finished the rest of it at the office and discovered LOTS of jalapeños. If it was a little toned down, the dish would have been perfect for me. i also ordered the Thai iced tea, which was too sweet for me. But then again, I'm not a big fan of sweets. (I know, I know....what kind of girl am I!) The whole lunch session took about an hour from waiting to paying, so it's perfect for us 9-5ers. I don't know what to make of this place. Some things were really good and others were not. The ambiance was nice and cozy, but they had these bright white lights on the tables which were really distracting and unpleasant to look at. The service was excellent, and the servers were really nice and explained things to us that we did not know. We got the spring rolls (really tiny, but it was okay.) and Massaman curry. The curry was really flavorful, but the potatoes in it were really hard and inedible. I also found a small hair at the bottom of my rice dish :( The standout was actually the dessert, a Thai Sundae, which they explained had very authentic Thai ingredients. It had amazing homemade ice cream made from coconut milk, and sticky rice, cornflakes, and some other jelly-like things. I liked this place but there were a couple of issues unfortunately. read more

I recently visited this restaurant with the intention to have an amazing family dining experience. The restaurant aesthetic was simple on the inside and outside. Their food was tasty too, however simplicity and taste are not good enough reasons to say I REALLY enjoyed this restaurant. Based on my experience at this establishment 1 star is even too much. For starters, prior to visiting this restaurant I made a reservation 2 days in advance. After traveling a half hour with young children and waiting 10 minutes to speak with the hostess, I was told I never made a reservation. The minute I said "Hi, I have a reservation" I was cut off by the hostess and she rudely said "I said no reservations. I said walk ins only." She did not even care to hear that I made the reservation 2 days in advance. I was told that we would have to wait 15 minutes for a table, which did not seem like much until it turned into 45 minutes! When we finally sat down, we were placed at a table for 7 when we had a party of 8. It was my mistake however the waiter RUDELY said "I have no chairs. You said 7." I understood my mistake, however, there were plenty of chairs outdoors that were NOT being used. If the waiter truly cared about his customer he would have went outside and brought one in. After waiting an hour to be seated, the waiter brought some water and left for 20 minutes to help other parties that came in AFTER mine. When we call a waiter over, he was very rude. He was upset we were not giving him the order fast enough. At this point, it was clear that the restaurant LACKS customer service skills. The waiter later on brought out our meals at DIFFERENT times and one was MISSING. When we told the waiter he got very defensive and made it seem like HIS mistake was OUR fault. The last meal to come out was meant to be shared with a 5 year old. It was truly ridiculous. Upon leaving the restaurant, the hostess came back to speak with us. When I explained to her the initial reason for being upset, she said that she did NOT care and that she does NOT want us back at the restaurant. Before completing this review, I would like to mention how "sanitary" this restaurant is by keeping the customer restroom INSIDE the kitchen. Really disorganized. We came in after seeing a show on broadway. They sat us but didn't give us any menus. Then about ten minutes later, someone came up and asked us if we were ready to order. It's either closed or it's open for cooking whether I'm here in the restaurant or ordering to go. It's just frustrating bc if you closed, then say you're closed. Don't have us sitting there for 10 minutes, give us menus, then say you're closed. At that point, you should have served us if it was your mistake for seating us in the first place. And for god sakes, this is Manhattan. Who does last call at 930 in Midtown? Your crazy. Nothing particularly special about this Thai restaurant, besides the fact that I can eat here comfortably during my 1-hour lunch break without having to wait or rush back to work. So whenever my coworker and I are craving some Pad Thai and want to "treat ourselves" during the work day/week, we just come down here for a nice table service meal. There's usually a good amount of customers that dine in, but it's never packed. The service is quick yet friendly. The complimentary shrimp chips w/ the peanut sauce dip is the perfect snack to munch on as an appetizer. Ordered a drink that never came, sent back the massaman curry because the potatoes weren't cooked, came back and it was the same.
