I have been visiting Topwater Grill for years. I keep coming back because typically the food is delicious and the service is excellent. I wish I could say that about yesterday - Sept 25th. Our server Jaquelyn was attentive at first but never returned once the food was placed on the table. We ended up getting help later from the manager Charlie whom was quite nice. To begin, the stuffed crab does not have actual crab in it - its imitation crab which everyone knows is fish. Charlie acknowledged this fact and actually said "I agree 100%" - we appreciated his candor. That also explains why it costs less than $20 for 2 stuffed crab, 4 fried shrimp, 3 hushpuppies and fries. As a means to make amends, Charlie had an order of blue crab crabcakes for my mom prepared. We got them to go and she opted to save them for lunch the next day (today)! Bear in mind these crabcakes are usually $30 for 2 which Charlie comped. We waited over 30 minutes for them to be made because Charlie said the crabcakes which were prepped for the day were already gone. These were going to be freshly made crabcakes. My friends, these crabcakes were awful. They tasted like pre-seasoned, store-bought breadcrumbs with no binding agent. Hardly any crab either. I took a fork and broke these two crab cakes down so you can see what they are comprised of- yeah, a whole lot of nothing! They should have made them from the stuffing of the stuffed crabs but actually use crab meat. If you take all of the shredded bits (white specs) of crab from these two crabcakes, I swear to Heaven there would not be even a full tablespoon of crab meat - remember this was 2 crabcakes. Incredibly disappointed with TG this time. My Marisco Chicken was delicious but stay away from anything crab. You better clarify if the dish you are ordering is imitation or real. Even if its real, the quantity is not worth the price. More like legalized theft. The pina coladas were delicious though hardly any alcohol. The alcohol content was so low it was like a mocktail - not worth the $8. read more

I came here about 10 years ago, trying to find something new away from Clearlake and had a great meal and drinks so I came back for more. Big place actually but I sit at the bar with the locals and listen to the fishing updates and boating news well, sipping on my favorite beverage, either a cold beer or a painkiller and deciding what to get off the menu. I started with the fried crab balls or bobbers which were fantastic and very filling! My entrée was the catfish étouffée with rice, which was fabulous, and all more food that I could eat but I hate it anyway. This is basically sitting on the water with outside seating along the dock side, pelicans on the post, boats, pulling in and out, grabbing some food. Love the atmosphere, love of food, worth the drive out to make a visit to the point where this is located north of Galveston. Highly recommend.!! read more

It's on the water. A cool breeze is blowing. Music is blasting. Pretty girls smiling. Liquor is pouring. Cold beers are being served. You can smell the Cajun and Creole spices and the fresh seafood being fried up. Life is good in this moment. The food is just a bunch of OK. Gumbo, fried shrimp, fries, hush puppies, boudin balls were all just OK. Nothing to write home about. Service was great. Fun atmosphere. Clean restaurant. A couple of things that really bothered me: 1.) The gumbo - They achieved a nice, dark roux. They threw in a little andouille sausage and chicken along with the shrimp. Not sure if there was crab. The small shrimp were not properly deveined and butterflied. One shrimp still had it's shell. I hate biting down on that. It should never happen. I've actually encountered this at some of Houston and Galveston's finer seafood restaurants. Not that it's an excuse. It shows a lack of kitchen supervision and quality control. 2.) Boudin balls - They put American cheese inside the boudin balls. That's just not right. It's a weird clash and does not go well together. For a second, I thought I was at Kolache Factory. The Good: The food was amazing. Highly recommend the Diablo Oysters! The outdoor seating was beautiful, with breezy waterfront views and super comfy booths, they even rocked! The hostess was incredibly friendly, attentive, and quick to accommodate us. Bathroom was very clean! The Not-So-Great: Unfortunately, our waitress wasn't very present. I don't think she fully stopped at our table once, just called out "Drinks?" while walking past. We barely saw her after that. Imagine a "drive by take your order." When we handed her our card to speed things up with the bill, she disappeared inside, chatting with other staff for about 10 minutes before finally bringing a to-go box, seeming a bit annoyed. Drinks & appetizers came soon and were good. However the waiter spilled the entire end of the tables drinks bringing the oysters Wet pants, shirt, shoes, etc with beer, ice tea, & waters. All I got was an "I'm sorry". Gezzzzzz. It took another hour for our food to arrive and half the ten orders were cold. Not a great 1st time experience to say the least. Prices were very reasonable and I think if the food was hot it would have been a good meal. Might try again but will make reservations and do it off a busy weekend. read more

We had become regulars at Topwater but I will never go back after my experience on Tuesday. Going out is a treat for us and we were treated horribly. We walk to our outside table with server. I notice a large dead fish in the water. She says they clean fish at the dock and throw parts in the water. No apology for our lunch view. It was downhill from there. App plate was dirty. I didn't even say anything. Figured it was a fluke and moved on. When I told server I was a vegetarian and gave my usual order, she sighed and rolled her eyes. But the icing on the cake was what looked like mold at the bottom of the glass of wine I just drank. No manager on duty. I had to text him. He called back and offered me another glass of wine. We shared stuffed mushroom caps, crab balls, shrimp cocktail and stuffed Jalapeños and then ate grilled shrimp, fried catfish, fried oysters, Caesar salad with shrimp and fried shrimp. The crab balls and jalapeños were my favorite and half of us took food home. She wins the prize for patience and personality. Every time I've been to Topwater it's been a fabulous experience! Came here for my mom's bday dinner. They were very busy as usual but still managed to accommodate us well. We initially sat outside but it was too windy and chilly and asked to move back inside. There was 6 of us and quickly accommodated us. We ordered half dozen oysters Diablo and another half dozen chipotle Charlie oysters. The Parmesan on the chipotle oysters was our favorite. We weren't a huge fan of the Diablo topping with jalapeños. I shared the Caesar salad with my fiancé and it was lacking in Caesar dressing. My fiancé and I shared the drunken redfish, my mom ordered the grilled red snapper and jumbo shrimp, and my dad got the catfish ettouffe. There was plenty of food and my mom ended up taking some home as leftovers. Everything was seasoned well. This is one of our staple to-gos to celebrate occasions. This was by far one of the worst restaurants I've ever ate at. The only positive things about this restaurant is the ocean view and comfortable outdoor seating but other than that, it was just awful. We ordered the grilled Red Snapper with Jumbo Shrimp, diablo oysters, fried mushrooms, mahi tacos, and vanilla ice cream. EVERYTHING was bland. no seasonings. no flavor. NOTHING. i was devastated because my partner and i drove an hour away just to be let down. At first the food looked beautiful and well seasoned but the moment we tasted everything, it was just awful. So we thought maybe getting some ice cream would help but nope!!! It was plain vanilla ice cream with whipped cream on top. We took a scoop and in the middle of the ice cream was these black thick dots?? At first we thought maybe it was a few drops of chocolate syrup or something or broken down chocolate sprinkles but nope. we investigated the rest of the ice cream to see if there was more of this mystery item but nope. nothing. so we got grossed out and left. To be honest, this place was not worth me spending $88 Our server was okay but not the best and to be honest, i was too disappointed to even bother explaining how bad the meal was to them. I came here on Mother's Day and was very impressed with the organization of seating to eat at restaurant. We checked in with the hostess and waited for the next available table alert by text. Even though, there was a bit of longer wait for an inside table we were able to sit down outside and had the option to be seated quicker in an outdoor table. The hostesses were very kind and made sure we were called in a timely manner. Once we were seated, the waiter was very quick to take our drink orders and appetizers. We had the mozzarella cheese sticks, artichoke dip, and torpedo and were all scrumptious. If you have more than 3 people I would recommend the artichoke dip because it comes with plenty of chips. I order the fried fish and shrimp and it was so tasty! The meal came with french fries, hush puppies, cocktail sauce, and tartar sauce. We also ordered the grilled red snapper and shrimp with vegetables and rice pilaf and it was finger-licking good. I would recommend if you are wanting something more on the healthier side. Our waiter went above and beyond to take care of our table! Everyone at the table said how much they loved the restaurant and will be back to try more food. Being new to the area, our neighbors suggested the "perfect place" by the water. There was PLENTY of indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outside because it was a nice night with a cool breeze. (See pic). We were not disappointed! Not only was the water location picture perfect and amazing, the food selection was fantastic. We brought our 11 year old niece and our neighbors brought their 10 year old granddaughter. They enjoyed chicken, fries, and yummy desert.
