Family members recommended this place for the food and for us it did not disappoint! We arrived and went inside the place. Once you enter the fresh seafood in ice is there for you to pick from. You pick the fresh seafood and they will fry it up for you. We ordered fried pompano fish and fried oysters and our son ordered chicken nuggets and fries. Seating here was very roomy with both indoor and outdoor seating. Service was great from the time we ordered to the time our food was brought to our table! The fish and oysters were sooo delicious! Honestly, not bad of a spot to catch some local seafood eats. I loved it personally. I've never seen a Filipino owned dine in spot like this so it was really nice. Took a while to order though. At least food came out in decent timing. Line was long, but what can you expect? I wasn't in the mood for something all grand, so at least getting some basic seafood boil was good enough and plentyful. My family and I have been long time customers of Pier 8 Seafood. Always purchasing large orders for Mother's Day, Father's Day, Birthdays, etc. My brother and I came up there on Thursday, October 29th 2020 for a large Birthday order to celebrate both of out birthdays. Unfortunately, due to the unprofessional, disrespectful, condescending and sarcastic attitude of the guy waiting on us for our birthday order it became quite the argument. He would not let us order off the menu. He would not let us order per pound.  Per "piece" is the only way he would let us order. WHY DO YOU HAVE THE MENU'S DISPLAYED IF THE CUSTOMER CAN NOT ORDER OFF OF IT??? WHY DO YOU HAVE SIGNS QUOTING COSTS PER POUND IF YOU CAN NOT ORDER PER POUND??? We ordered: 7 pieces of Catfish, 30 pieces of Calamari, 30 pieces of Scallops, 30 pieces of XL Shrimp, and 30 pieces of Frog Legs with a large order of fries. What a disaster!!! We received our cooked order to go and definitely checked it before we left. Yes, needless to say, he forgot the 30 pieces of Scallops. Yes, even though we paid for them this guy had the audacity to stand there and yell at me, the customer, that I didn't order them. I was beyond infuriated and yell back and definitely put him in his place. Who does he think he is??? Do you really speak to customers in that manner when you are needing the business during COVID-19??? Our birthday celebration was an utter disaster for the entire family.  Every family member got extremely sick from the food. We all suffered from being extremely sick that day, night and the next day. We spent over $200 to be absolutely miserable. So apparently I didn't read the Yelp reviews enough before visiting this restaurant. Let me start off by saying, that despite the three stars, I will definitely come back. This is a Fish Market located one small flight of stairs up. You order at the counter and basically have to take a good guess of what might be good. The person behind the counter recommended redfish to us. We took that along with some tilapia and shrimp and a small piece of calamari. Added some onion rings and drinks to the order. Came out to $77. Then you go outside and sit at your table with your number and they bring the food out. I really like the presentation of the food, basically everything is fried and thrown together onto a big tray. Our kids loved the shrimp, I thought the calamari was decent, and I really like the onion rings. However, I did not like the fish at all. The biggest reason for this is because there are no spices or battering added. Fried fish that has no spices added taste like boiled fish. We brought leftovers home and added some spices and it turned out pretty good. I said I would come back because I think it's a nice casual dining spot, I think it's fun for out-of-towners because it's a little bit different, and I think the shrimp and calamari were worth it. Ok ok I'm not going to lie I did not like this place at all but that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I don't like seafood. Why am I writing this review?? Because although I didn't eat anything except for the french fries, I couldn't not review my experience from a general point of view! So first off, this is a seafood market + restaurant, so the food you select is super fresh and I thought that was so great! The location is fairly small, we had a group of around 10 people and it felt pretty crammed. My family went all out and ordered a ton of food that I can't even remember the name of except shrimp, catfish and french fries. They all really enjoyed the food and gave it a 7/10 rating! One thing that I thought was cool is that every table gets a huge complimentary bowl of fish soup, how nice! My family said it was the perfect touch to their meal. This place is definitely an experience for itself and more for those who want to dive into the culture. It has more of a "homey" vibe, verses a chain restaurant. To be honest I thought it needed a serious renovation, I did feel like that would have helped to the atmosphere of the restaurant. If you're in the area and feeling risky, go ahead and check this place out! I can see how the atmosphere wouldn't be appealing for everyone, so keep that in mind if you're trying to please a group. Definitely not worth the trip for shrimp. The oysters were not fresh and overcooked, burnt. All you could taste was burnt batter. After complaining, I was brought 5 perfectly fine oysters. Amazing seafood! The price is definitely worth the meal. The only thing overpriced are the drinks but I saw a few people with a cooler so maybe you can bring your own? Not too sure. The view outside is great! I've never ate seafood without ir tasting like the "sea" so thats great! It didn't have that seawater after taste! The workers are friendly, they help you pick the fish, sides, anything with a lot of patience and great opinions! I will definitely come back if I'm around this side of town again! I have been here a couple times already and I would say overall this place is average. Majority, if not all of their dishes are fried, which isn't really a bad thing. You pick out what you want them to cook, then they cook it for you and bring it out when its done. Haven't had a bad meal here yet. The service here is pretty good. They can be a little slow depending on how many customers they have, but they were always nice. The one major flaw they had was that I did find a dead cockroach by the trash. Maybe it was an off cleaning day for them but that always is a concern. Don't expect to see a clean bathroom here either. They are small and dingy. This is where the seafood markets are in Houston -- opposite of the channel from touristy Kemah. Also very tasty, especially if you suck on those heads. Fried oysters. Lightly breaded and deep fried, but still delicate and crisp. Fish sinigang. For non-Filipinos, that's fish in a sour/salty tamarind soup. I think it was redfish, but can't be sure. All I know is it was yum. Rice. We had rice instead of fries because rice is life for my people, and because I love it so. What a fabulous dinner this place is always good the food is Absolutely Fresh well their a fish market so you buy the fish and you ask them to fry it. The shrimp is delicious the french fries were awful considering the seafood is so good I would just like forget about the sides and just concentrate on the big fish. I've tried the rice before and I didn't like it and the next time bring your own tartar sauce or cocktail sauce because there's is just the Hidden Valley brand in a container and it's not that good. This place seems like a whole in the wall. I would have never seen this place off the highway. But a local led us here and I gotta say, it's delicious. They are a market and they cook it on the spot if you want. People complain that they only fry their foods but that's not a big deal. I got the red fish (whole), medium shrimp, and fries. Over Priced !!! That's what I'll start with. The food is as fresh as you can absolutely get though. You literally pick the the seafood you want right from the ice to the frying pan. I will say this the everything you could basically want as far as seafood can go. There's squid, redfish, just about every size shrimp, alligator, catfish, you can get it peeled w/ heads on, or not the fish is also cleaned to order or you can pick up and take home to clean it yourself. The seating is okay, it's and outside seating arrangement next to the water the only bad part is the seagulls flying around from time to time. There's picnic tables sit up and there's also chairs in some part. The other part I didn't care for to much was the beer was kinda cold and didn't have any buckets with ice. They also have fresh scallops, squid, frogs legs and oysters. You pick what you want and they fry it for you. You can also take the raw seafood home and cook it yourself. No need for that because their method of cooking is perfection. You can also get sides with your seafood. There's plenty of family style seating inside and on the patios outside as well. From the Yelp reviews, I was expecting a decent place to grab some fresh seafood. We explored both the buffet and the downstairs market... here's what we found. Upstairs is the "buffet" I use this term loosely because it is a bunch of cheap dining furniture and rental looking tables with small containers of food in them set out for you to fill your plate. I did not find out how much it cost, but it was NOT what I expected in a buffet. So, we went downstairs and peeked in the window. It was a fish market where fresh seafood was on ice and you could purchase by the pound. A woman came out and told us about the "You buy, we fry" idea and we chatted for a little while. It seems this is the same owner as the upstairs buffet. Well, we decided to try the fish and shrimp "special order" just to have the experience. They sell canned soda and bottled beer from a fridge and the food comes with french fries. We paid $16 for one plate of 6 jumbo fried shrimp and our choice of catfish or talapia filet (we took the catfish) and 2 canned sodas. The breading was very light, but the seafood wasn't that great. It was served with cocktail and tartar sauces. There are cheap metal chairs (think old school dairy queen) and tables indoors and lots of wooden picnic tables outside. Stopped by Pier 8 on a weekday afternoon after a site visit at nearby Kemah Boardwalk. We split a pound of boiled shrimp (there are 4 sizes of shrimp, and we chose the large). They were served up promptly at our picnic table outside with cocktail sauce, tartar and some spices. We also had a couple of beers. We paid about $25. It did seem a little pricey, but we enjoyed our meal, and we weren't really looking to gorge. Service was friendly and basic. Don't go looking for decor or ambiance. TLDR; terrible ordering process, kept going back & forth trying to get them to put in the right order & they still got it wrong, added food we did not order and charged us for it, shrimp was dry as hell and fish barely had any meat. Why they even thought we said anything about fried rice, I don't know. It was a complete waste of food cos 1) we didn't want it 2) there was only 4.5 shrimp in this huge portion of rice and 3) it was that cheap microwavable fake rice stuff with a tiny bit of veggies thrown in. I didn't want to have to deal with going back in line to have them remove the fried rice... We were on our motorcycle and didn't have room to bring left overs. So, I ate the fried shrimp and they were INCREDIBLY DRY! Of course, right? They were already cooked and they basically cooked them again when they fried them WHEN I TOLD THEM I DID NOT WANT THEM FRIED. There was a long line when my friends and I got to Pier 8. I was beyond hungry by the time our fish and squid were fried and our shrimp soup was cooked. While waiting for over 1 1/2 hours for our order my friend and I scouted for a spot to seat and eat our dinner. The entire place was filthy!!! There were empty cans on one side of the eating area and napkins and plastic wares are on the floor-everywhere. The tables were sticky and nobody was bussing them. I had to use fresh lemons to wipe our tables. Thank goodness the food was fresh and rich in flavor; they were worth waiting for. But I refuse to eat there again. The beautifully fried meal is served family style on a cafeteria plastic tray with paper plates, forks,and condiments already on the table. For me the food was bland and tasteless and that's where the condiments come in handy. I ordered the catfish and shrimp with fries. The shrimp were a bit tastier than the catfish and thankfully served with a whole sliced lemon for added flavor. If you're hoping for a breaded cornmeal type seafood this is not that. read more
