I don't post many negative reviews but this should be shared. After I ordered a burrito with only one person in front of me in the whole place- and waited 10 minutes to finally come out to tell me "the burritos were still frozen". So they wasted my time to get breakfast before work and they don't actually make the burritos, they're heated up from frozen. I'd rather have Trader Joe's in that case. I asked for a refund since they wasted all of the time I had to grab breakfast and the receipt doesn't actually show a refund, so who knows if I'll get it. I hate being that guy... I used to eat at Torchys back when they were a trailer on First Street and their contemporaries were other taco trucks like Tacos Rodriguez and El Taquito (also a brick and mortar now). Their take on the taco was not necessarily earth-shattering but it was fun and creative in it's own way. Then the hype hit. They were never better than those other more authentic places but they didn't seem to aspire for that. They were hip, they were edgy, they were Austin and everyone wanted a piece of them. In the middle of these stories, we always have to think about the foundation, and that was and always will be, the food. Unfortunately, that suffered. Runny scrambled eggs, an unevenly heated flour tortilla and ice cold salsa is what you'd expect from a different level of place, I'll leave it at that. We were visiting Austin from Seattle and came to this place for dinner based on the recommendation from my colleague. They had several options including a couple for vegetarians. Most of us have tried Torchys before so basically my review is going to be a little different. First off, the queso is delicious, the fried avocado taco is perfect. Great good. Enough said. My review is going to focus on the experience at this particular location this past weekend when they were overwhelmingly busy. The store was perfectly clean. There was a very nice man going around making sure that everybody had a clean table to sit at, and even if it looked clean he gave it an extra wiping just to make sure. The order was taken and despite the fact that we had some modifications, everything came out perfectly as ordered. We had a lot of queso and we ran out of chips and they were so gracious in giving us a refill. I mean everyone was just so nice and these days customer service has been something that's been lacking in most of the places that we have been to recently but these guys are setting the bar. Honestly if a manager or someone is reading this and you're responsible for your amazing staff then I just want to personally thank you for giving hope once again to the restaurant industry and customer service standards. Torchy's was a welcomed addition to the Belterra Village. Their queso and guacamole beacon me like a telepathic transmitter eternally connected to my non conscious. I love to try their monthly featured tacos, the combinations are usually dynamite. I don't drink anymore but when I did their Torchy's Tini with a side of extra olives is liquid gold. I really wanted to love this place. I decided on the fried avocado taco and the Jamaican taco. Both had good flavor, but they weren't even hot. The tortillas and proteins were not hot. I haven't had Torchy's since the pandemic started and I was so excited to come back. I placed my order for curbside pickup 7:30pm online and was off to go pick it up. I called to see if my order was ready and whoever answered had some attitude and was rude. I told them I had a curbside order and they replied saying usually people just come inside and check on their order themselves. Two tacos will definitely fill up the normal person, especially if you indulge in the queso first. "Tourist Tacos"? Yeah, whatever. They're good and that's all that matters. Torchy's gets a bad rap from some for being a chain or tacos for tourists, but so what? The tacos from this location are consistently good and I really enjoy them. My favorite is the pork with salsa verde and also their monthly specials are normally excellent - at the time of this review they have a buffalo chicken taco that is out of this world insanely good. I also discovered that you can get breakfast tacos any time of the day - I highly recommend the migas and the chorizo variety. I don't understand the stigma from fellow Austinites and Texans alike. Once, their system went down and I waited in line in the parking lot with seriously about 40 other people for an hour to get my order. That was a weird one off. Systems go down. I'm in tech. I know. My husband and I have been loyal customers of Torchy's for years. So truthfully, it makes me sad to write this review. Yesterday we arrived at Torchy's full of excitement. My husband knows I have an addiction to Torchy's queso and breakfast tacos - so of course, he order those items for me plus tacos for himself. He ordered, I got a table, he joined me, and we waited...and waited...and waited...all the while seeing multiple orders of chips n queso/guac be delivered to surrounding tables. 20+ min later, our tacos arrived. The Entree Came BEFORE the Queso. In fact, had we not mentioned our queso, I am pretty sure it never would have reached our table. We asked our server to tell the manager what had occurred - her response was "I'll try"... she didn't try. She didn't tell the manager anything. I understand this is not the end of the world, but I'm can't help but feel disappointed because our appetizer arrived AFTER our entrees. The fried avocado was rich and definitely filling. The independent was decadent and flavorful. The chicken fajita is tasty. The recommended sauces are good but I would definitely ask for sides of the other sauces and see which ones you love the best. All the sauces are great and have different taste profiles which is great. 5/5 Atmosphere: very casual sit down place. Clean and modern design.
