I really wanted legit Mexican food, but Waco isn't for the vegetarian foodie. Everything seems to BBQ or tex-mex. I really wanted tacos and, surprisingly, this was the best rated Mexican in town. The line was very long when we walked in since you have to order at a counter and are served your food after. Instead, we sat at the bar where one lonely bartender was helping about 10 people and making drinks for the whole restaurant. We were served a lot faster than the people in line. To start off, we got the green chili queso with chips. Okay, this shit is good. It has a little guacamole and isnt your average dip. The chips were thick and fresh. Of course, we didn't get the diablo sauce as my mom is a wimp. I ordered the Fried Avocado without beans. It could have been crispier and I ordered a corn tortilla, but it came on flour. It would have been a million times better with queso Fresca instead of a Mexican blend shredded cheese. Still good. Mother dearest got the Mr. Orange, a blackened salmon taco. She loved it (refried beans and all). Basically, you should go here if you want to get tacos. Everything else in this city is pretty mediocre. read more

Probably the best chips and guacamole I've ever had hands down. I chose to eat off the secret menu and I'm glad I was able to sample a few of the other items at our table! I was told by a buddy if I come to Waco I have to go to Torchy's Tacos..... It did not disappoint at all. I started off with the chips and queso.... It was so delicious. I ordered the Republican, Democrat and the Crossroads. The Republican was the best to me, based on the yummy jalapeno sausage and pablano sauce. The Democrat was good but the Crossroads tasted much better. My girlfriend ordered the Trailer Park and Fajitas tacos and of course I sampled them they were good too. The prices were reasonable and the service was awesome. The time from order to table was less then 10 minutes, even though it was a full house. I was so excited to try Torchy's during my first trip to Texas, in part because friends had been telling me for weeks leading up to my trip that it was so amazing. I was slightly let down, mostly by the extremely slow service and a little bit by the tacos, though The Democrat taco was realllly good. We stopped by for a late lunch on Saturday, and the line was out the door. Luckily, the guy behind us in line said you could skip the line and sit at the bar, as long as you order from the bartender, so we did that. Tried the frozen margarita, which was $5.50 and great. We ordered two tacos each -- The Democrat x2, a Fried Avocado, and a Mr. Orange. We'd asked the bartender how many tacos he recommended, and he said two, but we thought he undersold us -- we could each have eaten three. Anyway, it took over half an hour for our tacos to arrive, which is super long for a kitchen that is churning out tacos from a set menu all day. Maybe it was just the bar that was so slow, but it was frustrating. We had a very long wait for our check, too, and then when we got it, it was wrong. As for the food, The Democrat taco was excellent. Super flavorful with tender, delicious meat. The Fried Avocado was good but wasn't as flavorful, and we felt the same way about the Mr. Orange (the salmon taco). I'm eager to try Torchy's again but will try a different location and try to go at an off-time so as to avoid service delays. read more

I received great help in vegan-izing some menu items. Torchy's isn't exactly vegan friendly but Mary, the person who assisted me at register, was extremely knowledgeable about which items were dairy-free/ egg-free and basically helped me build my own mini vegan platter. After some negotiation with my other half, he agreed to eat at torchys. I had heard and read great things about torchys, so I had some high expectations of these tacos. Well, maybe my expectations were too high. We ordered the green chile pork taco, chorizo egg and cheese taco, pork burrito, and the green chile queso and chips. Queso and chips came out in about 5 mins. After 30 mins of waiting for the rest of our food, I asked for them to check on our food. Apparently, they were running 30 mins behind on all orders. Five mins later, we received our food. Tortillas seemed like they were store bought, pulled pork was salty, and with it costing $3-$5 a taco and $8 a burrito, it was definitely not worth the price and hype. Never been here before. Stopped at this exit because my old favorite, Taco Cabana is there. After a miserable experience, we saw Torchys across the street. What a pleasant surprise. The staff were helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. The restaurant was very clean as well. The food was really tasty too. I really enjoyed their beef fajita tacos. Was surprised at how fast it came out. We were in Torchys, ordered, and served in less time that we waited and were ignored at the Taco Cabana across the street. The food was ok, but sitting at the bar, I watched the waitress clean about 10 menus front and back, then clean some of the bar area, then clean the spouts of the drafts beers without ever rinsing out the rag she was using. We recently moved from Austin, so when we were in this town to visit Cameron Park Zoo, we had to hit up a Torchy's. This place was packed for Sunday lunch. We snagged a seat in the covered patio area. The male bartender was nice enough to switch one of the channels to a local football game, then the female bartender came in clearly not knowing how to use the remotes and messing up all the TVs and sporting events. None of the tables were clean and we had to bus our own table. As we sat there people left dirty table. I couldn't see a single staff member bussing any tables, yet the front counter is telling you a 20-25 minute wait for food. We got our queso and chips - they were just as I remembered. Creamy, cheesey, guac in the middle. I got my usual Pink taco - so underwhelming and lacking flavor. It was very dry. I'm not sure how you could make it dry. Tried the new (new to me) street corn. Stop. Just stop there. If you know what authentic street corn is supposed to taste like- do not, I repeat do not get their street corn. The corn was overly sweet, like it was cooked in sugar water, yet something sour mixed in. No. Revamp that recipe. Go down to your local roach coach, try some real street corn and revamp that whole concept. You guys kinda gave the Torchy's brand a bad name (and taste in my mouth). read more

Ate here for the first time and dined-in. Though the line was long, it didn't take long once we ordered to get our food. I had three different tacos including a brisket and a chicken taco which were all delicious. My wife had a chicken burrito and we shared queso which were pretty good. They serve beer and I had an Austin Amber which was the only decent craft beer I had on my trip. I thought our Cincinnati craft beer selections are way better. The perfect combination. Thought it was just heaven on my palate. The pork was a bit dry, a small issue that was solved with some of that sauce provided. I also had the street corn and my goodness, it was tasty. Nice spice with delicious corn and cheese and some sort of cream sauce. Not sure it was great for the diet but didn't even care. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because the restaurant messed up my fiancé's order and had to remake it but other than that they were so fast! I ordered the Ahi Tuna taco with corn and it was filling and delicious. I was worried that the taco would be too spicy since the pepper rating was the highest but it was just right. I also ordered a skinny margarita and boy was it strong but I'm ok with! Great atmosphere, super chill and family friendly! The service was fast even when the order was wrong and it was nice and clean. Would definitely go there again. Torchy's Tacos has been in my radar almost as soon as Austin beckoned me to come visit. So imagine how disheartened I was that it was not one of the numerous restaurants we dined at when we were in town. No worries, the daughter was in desperate need of milkshakes whilst we were passing by Waco. A quick check of Yelp showed that there was a Sonic not even 2 miles from where we were. As Sonic is usually a drive from our home and I know that their milkshakes always delivers, a quick detour was in order. And guess what is magically across from Sonic? Torchy's Tacos! I put my mommy foot down and told the daughter that lunch should be had first before milkshakes. As mentioned, I have not been to a Torchy's before so I have no point of comparison. I was quite impressed by the food! We ordered the queso (addicted now and must try to replicate soon) and a variety of tacos: trailer trash extra trashy, green chile pulled pork, Republican, Democrat, and hipster (from their secret menu). Everything was quite tasty with every bite simply a delight. The service was friendly and fast. We ordered two tacos for each person, but quite frankly I think one each would have been enough as they are not on the small side. Still, their tacos are well worth stretching my stomach for. I'm in Waco for work and needed something quick and protein-y. Torchy's Taco, a favorite Austin chain that's expanding to the corners of Texas, fit the bill admirably. This was my first time using the online ordering system. It was easy to select the tacos I wanted, and I was impressed that I could select a bowl option instead of a corn or flour tortilla for one of the tacos the site had recommended to me, so I decided to check it out. For that taco's temperature, I'm deducting one star, but otherwise everything was perfect. Perhaps because it came in a bowl instead of wrapped with other hot compatriots, the meat was colder than I expected - I guess maybe in Austin there's always a crowd and so the queue for online orders is more robust, which is why my orders are all warm when I show up. Whatever. It was still tasty. The interactive feature on the website was way fun and deserves its own post. The site first asks you to name your protein: beef, chicken, veggies, etc. and each option has a totally cute design to go with it. I first selected fish, then that I was in for some heat but not blow-my-mind spice, and finally, that rather than feeling adventurous or classic, I was feeling hipster. Mr. Pink, the tuna taco, was recommended, and the interactive feature showed the cute designs on each card, all in a row, to recap. So adorable and fun, Torchy's! It makes me glad I'm in town through Friday. Other notable mentions: there seems to be table service here and the servers are very friendly when retrieving patrons baskets and bringing out food. Also the refried black beans are flavorful, salty, creamy, and like a full pint of food for under two bucks. I wish I'd known about these BEANS OF VALUE sooner. Well done, Torchy's Tacos. Dreadful experience. The restaurant was loud and dirty. The fountain drinks were almost all out of order and trying to get water yielded clear carbonated water. I saw other guests complain about the same thing. The bathroom was dirty, trash can overflowing, debris all about. It was gross. The area with straws etc was dirty and the place where you emptied your baskets after eating was disgusting, food all over it. No one was keeping the restaurant tidy. Ugh! It's Texas, they love all sorts of tacos. This mini-chain has 4-5 locations in Texas. They have a creative menu of tacos. Lots of beef, fried chicken and pork options. I recommend the trailer park. It's my go-to. Not all their tacos are to my liking, but once you try a few you will find something you really like. 3 tacos are more than enough to fill you up.
