Although it was a cold and wet Alaskan night, inside was warm and comfy. We were seating pretty immediately even though it was packed, and our friend (who so graciously drove us here) recommended we try their Yak Burger. Usually I let my camera eat first, but the burger smelled so good, I ended up devouring it before I could even take a picture. One of the best burgers I've had in my life. The beers too were delicious. There's something for everyone here from light lagers to heavy stouts and even fruity ciders. You can't go wrong. Highly recommend stopping by 49th State Brewing.

When we arrived there was a bit of a wait for dinner seating - which we didn't mind; gave us an opportunity to order some drinks and checkout the enormous outdoor space they have in front. Unfortunately while they listed many beers on the menu, they were out of at least half of them. Wasn't an issue for me as I was able to get my fill with what they had available -- but I would have loved to try some flights to taste them all (if they had them available). As mentioned, even with what was avaiable; tons of variety and everything I tried (IPAs and Sours) were great. It was cool to explore "the bus" out front; they let you go inside which they've made a mini museum with timeline; it isn't actually "THE bus" -- it's the one used in the movie (Into the Wild), but a great replica that lets you really imagine what Chris was living in out there. We were called in for our table much sooner than expected. Friendly server who, like most summer staff in Denali, are young foreigners that are coming to the USA for the first time on a temporary work visa to visit -- can't blame them, our country is the best. Despite being inexperienced, the server tried his best and did a good job. Where this place flounders is in the food. Nothing to write home about - everything was just at about par for the most part. We had the nachos as an appetizer -- very simple, decent size, nothing special. I ordered the Yak Burger per recommendations; wasn't worthwhile. Didn't taste much different than a normal run-of-the-mill burger. I couldn't differential between the yak meat and any other normal beef burger; menu item seems like a bit of a tourist trap. My partner had one of the fish dishes (I think the cod) and also wasn't impressed - small portion size and nothing substantive in terms of fresh flavor. Both dishes seemed overpriced given the lack of taste/quality. I definitely wouldn't recommend eating here, but would recommend swinging by for a drink prior to (or after) going somewhere else to dine.

That was one of the few positives associated with this place of lodging. We stayed in a room where the height of the carpeting impeded the easy operation of the door. The bed was too large for the size of the room so there was no place for a nightstand to place your glasses or a bottle of water. There was very poor connectivity in the room. The room lighting was poor restricting reading and other activities to a small area near the window. Also, the interior of the venue was not traveler friendly. There were too many stairs to access bedrooms which required carrying your luggage to your room or pulling your roller bags up sets of stairs. The bottom landing of the main floor staircase was not flush with the floor which required visitors to step over the landing (think safety issue). The breakfast was mediocre at best. The proprietor (the father) had a smug and condescending style of communication. The first morning I was there, I awoke early and sat in the living room area working on a crossword puzzle. I peered outside and saw the proprietor urinate on a tree in the yard when he was letting the three dogs (one yappy and unfriendly) out for their morning business. He next appeared in the kitchen to start preparations for breakfast. Did he wash his hands? Needless to say, I only ate items prepared by his son Bart who was very personable.

I'm in a group of 5 that looked for lodging in Denali National Park back in mid-late July (and my…read moretrip was mid-late August), so nothing was available except Carlo Creek Cabins, and even most of their cabins were booked. We ended up getting Cabin 9, which is close to the office and therefore wifi, and Cabin A, which is quite far and has neither wifi, service, nor a private bathroom. The shared bathroom actually was clean and fine, but I hate how there's a light timer switch of 15 min maximum (I take 15-30 min showers when I wash my hair). Also, in the shower house I used closest to my room, only 1 of the 2 shower stalls had hot water. Another problem is the hours of the office and the shuttle (Denali Hostel & Cabins shuttle services Carlo Lodges, The Perch and Creekside which are extremely close by) don't really make sense with everything else going on in the park. For one, the Park Connection Motorcoach from Anchorage to Denali either arrives 12:30 pm or 8:30 pm. However, the Carlo Lodge Office is only open 8 to 11 am and 3 to 8 pm. When we arrived around 1 pm using their shuttle pickup, we literally had 2 hours of nothing to do there. We didn't have the wifi password at the time either. Second, some of the 8 am activities require you to be at Denali Cabins for pickup by 7 am. However, the shuttle itself arrives 7 am at Carlo Lodges. Lastly, they charge $20/person plus fees if you book online. For my group of 5, that means $106 each time ONE WAY to go anywhere. At least the restaurants nearby are pretty good. Creekside Cafe is the only one open every day from morning to night though lol.

I've been trying to find this place for a while…read more For so long, that I often thought it was myth. What? A bar? In Denali? You mean the park right? Not just the Denali area? You sure it's not some bar in "Glitter Gulch"? I've looked for it numerous times, with no luck. It's hard to describe where it is, you'll think you're driving in places you're not supposed to. (and maybe you aren't?) It's not a myth friends. Maybe I shouldn't even be listing it but, it *is* listed on other sites that fulfill similar niches to Yelp. And lack of beta is one of my criticisms about Alaska, so I'm doing my little part to change that. Anyway, this place is awesome! It's a building built up around two rail cars. It's hard to describe until you see it. The ambiance is probably the most "real" you'll find in the whole greater Denali area. Most of the folks here work or volunteer for the park (and also associated businesses) in some capacity, at least that's what it seemed like. Key features: Friendly bartenders, live music, beer and wine only. I don't know how they managed to do it, but the beer they have on tap is incredible. I saw stuff on tap here that I've never seen anywhere else in the state. For wine, they have a Bota Red and a Bota White. Also, it's cheap! Just about everything is $5! An unheard of price for Alaska, let alone touristy Alaska. They also make pizza and, although I didn't eat any, it looked pretty incredible. Worth a stop, just don't tell your friends! (note, the location I have pinned here is exactly where it is located, your GPS might not like it very much though, where's your sense of adventure, anyway?)
