In Ann Arbor, bad overpriced sushi is pretty easy to come by. If you stumble upon Totoro, you are lucky. As an on-campus option I think it's the best in Ann Arbor. The price is a little lower than other places and the quality is even better. The chairs are a bit uncomfortable from what I remember so don't plan on a long meal. THE BEST! Their fried stuff is very good, crispy but not greasy. We orered fried soft shell crab as appetizer, one pork katsu bento box, and the UofM roll. The pork katsu was fried very well with just the right amount of sauce on top. The noodle salad was very delicious. The seaweed salad in the roll was one of the best ever. The seaweed wrap was a little soggy. Perhaps I have been spoiled by the low humidity weather in Cali and just need to get over it. read more

Somewhat surprised and sad to see this place only has a 3.5 star rating. My girlfriend took me here when we first met, and we've been back many times. The prices are really good when compared to other places, and its tasty too. That said, I've only ever ordered sushi here; why come to a sushi place and not eat sushi? They have a variety of specialty rolls which are really good, most of which are less than 10$. There are also basic rolls that are $2-5 dollars, but are still good. They give you miso soup and salad with a tasty, tangy dressing. There are also Totoros everywhere, if you're into that, but there aren't so many that it becomes really tacky, at least in my opinion. This was the first restaurant at which I ever tried sushi and boy! was I surprised. It's been 3 years since that day and I am hooked onto their rolls. I haven't had the courage to try any sashimi yet (I'm not a big fan of fish) but when I do get the guts to try it, it'll be at Totoro. These people won me over by how they treated my friends and I during a difficult situation. We came to eat at Totoro during art fair with four tired children, including two that were under a year old during art fair. I wasn't sure if it would be okay to bring the children in and so I asked. The manager welcomed us in, found a quiet table for us, and helped out figuring out what one of the children with PKU could eat. When we were passing the baby around in order to eat, the manager offered to play with our child. She showed the kids the cartoon character the restaurant shares a name with, and really went out of her way to make us welcome. The sushi is good. The fish tastes and feels fresh in the mouth, and is never muddy colored. I enjoy the rolls, and the bento box. There seems to be a fairly close attention to detail on the food. For the price, best sushi in Ann Arbor! Great entree-salads and -soups. The staff is actually pretty funny: I got a spicy dish, and the waitress was like, "Oooo are you sure?" My first debut review because it sucks!!! Don't order the takitori because it is boiled and the somehow left with a burned mark to indicated that it's been pan fried. The 9.9 spicy crab salad is made of fake crab and the portion of it is tinny, less than my fist...I don't think it's small because it signifies delicacy... The whatever udon noodle soup is water + soy source based. The worst one in Ann Arbor because it doesn't cook with heart and I can take sweet salty sour as long as people care about what they make... read more

I've heard the fish quality is better than Sadako, but I haven't noticed a significant enough difference to justify going here. I find that for the cost and the portion size, Totoro is on the pricier side that I can't really justify as a college student. Ate at Totoro for the first time today. Pleasant, clean cafe atmosphere, the Totoro theme is cute but not overpowering. Very polite service. I started with gyoza dumplings - very good and obviously freshly cooked - followed by a selection of sushi. The nigiri was really good, super fresh, and the rolls were tasty and very well prepared. My companions really liked their teriyaki chicken. All in all one of the best sushi places I've found in Ann Arbor. I'm planning to go back to try the bento lunches sometime. read more

This place used to be my favorite sushi in Ann Arbor, but has dropped tons over the years. The fish does not taste fresh, the rolls are small, and the prices are very high. I would have never known this was here if it wasn't for Yelp! Their simple rolls are generally inexpensive and delicious and even their pricier roles aren't too much in the scheme of things. I love that if you order 2 rolls, you get free miso soup and salad! I'm really glad that I found it since I'm always downtown.I don't know if it's the best sushi I ever had, but it's the best I've had in A2. Definitely worth visiting! read more

The vegetarian bento box is a great deal at under $10. The food is well prepared. However the last time I was there I was seated close to the sushi chef, and he had some nasal issues, which caused him to make grotesque sounds every few minutes that completely detracted from the experience. I like Totoro, though there was a time when I loved this place. The sushi is good, the Udon is pretty good, and I like their Bento boxes. Over the years, however, my loving went to liking to disliking back to liking. It's not the priciest sushi, but it's also not the cheapest. It's not the best, and it's not the worst. As I like soup and salad, I give places more credit when they give free soup and salad. I have to complain that Totoro can be weird about making substitutions and changes (at least they used to be). I understand they have created a menu they want to stick to, but it is not unreasonable to sometimes make changes. I think they are better now, but they especially angered me in their first year. With the bento boxes, some menus said one thing and some said another. When I got my order one time, it wasn't what the menu had said. They told me they stuck to the menu and showed me a menu that said something different. I told them that I was certain my menu said something different and asked if I could look through a few. They handed me a small pile, and, sure enough, there were some that matched the menu I ordered off of, and some that matched the menu they showed me. I wouldn't have minded so much if they hadn't been unhappy with me (they actually made me feel like it was my bad for thinking I was ordering what the menu said). I mean I didn't want to make a big deal, but the very reason why I ordered what I did was the thing that I didn't get. They ended up taking my food away and giving me a new Bento box that matched my menu's description, but they didn't apologize and didn't comp me anything. Like I said, they were angry with me and it seemed like they wanted me to feel bad even though it was their mistake. Anyway, I hate to say it but that experience is probably what has turned me off Totoro. Now I do still go back on occasion because the food is good. I think they've worked out their kinks, though I don't really know because I just try to keep it simple and easy and not have any real expectations about what I'm getting until it's right in front of me. read more

Totoro is a place I would go more for the sushi rather then the rolls. sadako still beat it with the rolls. It is a little more expensive then other place on campus but overall very good sushi. They had great service. the Yam Yam roll is very good, udon is about average, the bento boxes are standard, I think i had more fun with the different sushi combos of specialty rolls and raw fish. read more

I'm glad I read this reviews before trying Totoro out. As a previous reviewer mentioned, it's hard to find but is located in the same building that has a Yoga and Greek food sign. (Thanks!) I tried out their Chicken Bento lunch box. It really is a good deal for your $! The tempura was hot and fresh. The chicken lacked some flavor however. Maybe next time I'll try the beef. I had Totoro takeout for dinner the other day, and while I was wary of a sushi place that let me order online, the sushi rolls I had were pretty good! I had the spicy tuna and eel & cucumber rolls. My order came with miso soup that was the saltiest miso I've ever had and a sad little salad of iceberg lettuce. However, I've found that this kind of salad is typical of sushi places. Why? The eel and cucumber roll was delicious, but I found the spicy tuna to be less-than-great. Like, I ate it, it was fine, but I've had other spicy tuna that I LOVED, and this wasn't it. Oh, well. BUT, if you order online, you can order extra sauces for FREE. ALL ABOARD THE SWEET EEL SAUCE EXPRESS! Also, be forewarned of the impending eco-guilt trip that comes with getting food to-go. I've never seen so much Styrofoam in my life! Both of my rolls came in a GIANT Styrofoam box, the salad came in a smaller box, and the soup was in a Styrofoam bowl/lid combo. So sad. I gave it 3 stars because it's what you'd expect from fast, takeout sushi from Ann Arbor. It is definitely really fun to order sushi 20 minutes before class is done and have it waiting for you as soon as you're out of class. Yay! Be aware that when using the website to order, you'll submit your order but the sushi will remain in your "sushi cart," so you'll think it didn't go through. Don't worry, friend! It totally did. I am quite disappointed in my fellow reviewers. It seems they have no pallet. This restaurant may be very unassuming, but their sushi is off the charts. I'm not talking California roll that appeals to the masses, I'm talking the real thing. Toro that melts in your mouth and beats anything else around, as well as sea urchin that brings to mind a cool breeze wafting off the ocean, and salmon roe so fresh that you would have to make love to a salmon to find better. Don't listen to the tasteless pretentious reviewers poopooing their food (funny how nowadays everybody thinks they're a food critic, especially the ones who couldn't tell potatoes Dauphinois from hush puppies). Go check it out for yourself, and go for the good stuff. You can't judge a gourmet restaurant based on how they do pancakes. This place beats out most places I have been to in Japan, and I have traveled there extensively. Don't go, however, expecting it to be a plush elegant experience. I really like Totoro, but I have to admit that 80% of the time that I've come here it's been after Happy Hour and I'm sort of uh, not as sharp as normal. If you just want a bit to eat, share the rolls rolls rolls sushi deal and you and your friend will walk out paying$7 each for a california roll and some sushi pieces. I love this place! The service is always awesome and it's cute, tucked in location is very cozy. I have had nothing but good food here. Not all Japanese restaurants offer bento boxes and I love bento boxes - I'm all for variety! The sushi is amazing. A friend who loves white tuna was pleased to find that Totoro offers it. It was here that I discovered my FAVE roll - the plum mint roll! Perhaps an acquired taste, but once you have acquired it you will be a better person for it. It's cheap and you get what you pay for. I went for lunch. The service was adequate. I ordered the lunch combo with 12 pieces of sushi and a starter salad. The salad was fine, but the sushi rice was very dry which is a huge pet peeve of mine and a dead giveaway of low quality cheap sushi. Tried for another sushi place in Ann Arbor but it was closed. Ordered the Caterpillar, Fatty tuna, salmon, unagi nigiri, and Crazy roll 2. Most of the rolls were very decent, but the fatty tuna was DISGUSTING. Very old tuna that reeked of seafood and it ended up ruining the meal for me.
