My experience has me torn on how to feel about it with my excitement going in based in the high marks. I wasn't blown away here, and sadly a bit disappointed, yet the food wasn't completely terrible nor great, more so not the BBQ I was expecting. Their site says "hint of latin-american flavor," but it really has a bigger impact on it NOT being typical BBQ. Ex - the brisket is SUPER tender; the catch, it didn't taste like brisket to me at all and had no flavor. The pulled pork, had some weird texture in the mix, a different flavor and tender, but again not a typical BBQ pulled pork taste, and also a bit bland. The hush puppies were terrible and had a sandy texture that completely fell apart. The Mac'n cheese was ok. That said - now that I've experienced it NOT being typical BBQ, I would eat here again and get the dishes that aren't meant to be typical BBQ as I'm guessing that is where their style really works better, such as the tacos or brisket burger. The upside, quirky little set up, nice staff, food portion was great for the price, and sauces were good and key. read more

I ordered a slab of ribs from Grubhub for me to pick up. The ribs were of good size and looked tasty. I went with the dry rub choice, but unfortunately for me, the rub was too spicy to enjoy. I removed the top layer and it the meat was good. I think next time, I will try to get a slab with sauce on the sides. Even though I didn't eat all of the ribs, out of 6, 3 were more than filling. The Macaroni was delicious with bacon bits and cilantro. The ribs themselves were under two pieces of toast, but I didn't get to try the toast because it made the toast soggy. As my second side, I chose fries. The fries are waffle style, but I didn't like them at all. After trying 3, I just stopped eating them. Though my experience didn't leave a great first impression, the service was friendly and I can't blame the restaurant for me not liking spicy food. Driving through Nashville, we were in the mood for BBQ and they were open. So why not? From the outside they don't look like much but inside was nice no frills... typically all good signs for a BBQ joint. And true to their name, they were fast. Good sit down without being held up a long time. I ordered the wings combo with slaw. It was delicious! The wings were smoked just right, juicy and tender. The slaw was definitely house made and was the way I like it. My mom had the pulled pork sandwich with fries. She said the fries were just like chick-fil-a (high Praise). I snuck a bite of pork - good flavor, not fatty or too dry. Just right. And not swimming in sauce! Dad did the combo platter of pork and brisket. He couldn't decide which he liked better... he kept tasting until he had none left. The star though... sweet tea for $1.50! it was yummy and just the right amount of sweet. THE BEST!! So far Toto's has been the best barbecue we have had here in Nashville!! The ribs were so delicious and so tender that they fell apart to the touch! Brisket was very tender and juicy and melts in your mouth. The flavor of the meats were unbelievably good, I just couldn't believe how good it tasted. Now on to the sides. We had the potato salad, Mac and cheese b cause no barbecue meal is complete with Mac and the charro beans. Don't let the outside fool you, it might look like some small restaurant starting out but the food and customer service will sweep you off your feet. I was just driving by trying to find somewhere to eat and I saw this little restaurant with the cute little pig logo. I wasn't expecting anything special since it wasn't as crowded as the rest of the places here in East Nashville but bruh let me tell you. This place is slept on, customer service was on point, the atmosphere was lax and I didn't feel rushed at all. The food comes quick and man the brisket here is Amazing, literally melt in your mouth. We were in town and wanted to find a good BBQ place. Read the yelp reviews and decided to check our Toto's BBQ Express. We were greeted by some friendly faces. We ordered the pork spare ribs, brisket, beef rib (one), and some sides. I'm a huge fan of mom and pop type shops and wanted to give this place a higher rating. Unfortunately, the food just wasn't up to par. The brisket was slathered in bbq sauce, and it didn't have a smoke ring and did not have a smoked flavor consistent with BBQ. The pork spare ribs were tender but again didn't have a smoked bbq flavor to it. The beef ribs was good but at $20 a rib, I was expecting more. Don't get me wrong the meat were tender but it didn't have the usual smoked smell or flavor. It reminded me of BBQ meat smoked in an electric smokers (not pellet style). This is a barbecue joint unlike any other in East Nashville. They specialize in the usual southern smokehouse staples but with a south of the border twist. I'm no purist when it comes to barbecue or its sides, but most of the time when people start mucking with things I find myself wishing they'd left well enough alone. That is not the case here. I got the pulled pork tacos with potato salad. The tacos were delicious in corn tortillas that seemed like they could have been homemade. They came with two sauces. One was a green, avocado based sauce and the other was a sweet, vinegar based bbq sauce. Both were great and I doused my tacos liberally. The potato salad was surprisingly spicy and I loved it. I would go back just for the potato salad. My girlfriend got the brisket burger with mac and cheese. The sauce that came with the brisket was a thicker, more traditional barbecue sauce than what comes with the tacos but it was very good as well. The brisket was tender and juicy and the mac and cheese was good even though she opted to go without the bacon and cilantro. This is definitely a place to check out if you enjoy barbecue but especially if you're in the mood for something outside the ordinary barbecue joint. read more

He also got brisket bc who doesn't like a good cut of brisket. We requested 1lb of brisket. Well, we did not enjoy the brisket. It had zero flavor and clearly wasn't smoked. Maybe cooked in the oven or pressure cooker. So disappointing I was expecting smoked flavor and seasoning. It came with a sauce which it definitely needed. So once we got home we drowned it in the sauce and warmed it up to eat. I will say it was very tender, which leads me to believe it was oven baked/pressure cooked which sucks bc they had a grill fired up outside. They have a lot of options on their menu but I think I'll stick to the fried chicken. The establishment was clean with plenty of seating. My family was on vacation in Nashville and hungry for some barbecue. When we saw the smoker in the front of Toto's we were curious and decided to check the restaurant out, and we're glad that we did! Everything was home made and wonderful ! I had the BBQ Brisket burger, which was recommended by the restaurant owner. It was soft and very flavorful, along with that I enjoyed some waffle fries, which were great! While waiting for our food my sister and I had a chance to try out a few of the games set out for guests to use. After a few minutes of playing, our food had arrived. The restaurant is family run and opened during the pandemic, so I am worried that they might not be getting the attention that a great restaurant like that deserves ! Today was my second visit to Totos and enjoyed my meal. I had the 4 bones ribs with two sides. The ribs tasted great and fell off the bone. No knife needed. I am not a huge fan of vinegar based sauces but enjoyed the ribs. The mac and cheese was really good as well as the green beans. Service was great and very friendly. I am surprised by some of the negative comments about the food. This is very much a Mexican play on BBQ so I wonder if some expected a Texas style or Tennessee type of BBQ and were disappointed. I was looking for something close to where I was working and saw the name "Toto's BBQ." I said I need to try that! So, I pull up and see a trailer and a smoker In front of a building. Inside, the makings of a place that focuses on food rather than creating an atmosphere. It' has plenty of simple seating and is very clean. But the smell! Wow! I ordered a pork plate, which came with 2 sides. I chose baked and charro beans. The pork came with standard sauce, which was the right blend of heat and flavor, and not really needed as the meat was well smoked, but the sauce was the perfect touch! The charro and baked beans were both beautifully flavored as well. That was last eeek. I returned yesterday and tried the brisket sandwich. I had the charro beans again. I'm back today trying the pork sandwhich, and again the charro beans. It's a good thing for my wallet that I don't live close by, because I could see myself having lunch and dinner here for most meals! It's that good! We ordered delivery through Uber Eats. We made a couople of changes (no mayo). We had the BBQ pork sandwich combo and the brisket combo. Both sandwiches were delicious. The cole slaw was a homemade vinegar slaw that was perfect on the sandwich. I cannot say enough good about the mac and cheese. It's obviously homemade and cheesy with bacon. What's not to love? We also had the green beans, which were also fantastic. They're clearly cooked with ham (as they should be). I'm thinking about ordering again tonight just because it was soooo good.
