I love this place! The food is always great and fresh. The staff are really personable and the ambiance is too... good vibes all the way around! The only downside is the wait time to be seated can be pretty extensive. We once waited an hour and twenty minutes to be seated. Yes, the food is good, cool vibes and all, but I won't ever wait that long again.. that's just crazy! Tower Cafe is not The Firehouse, or The Kitchen Restaurant, where an extended wait time is expected especially if you don't have reservations. If they improved customer wait time, we would definitely be there more because we live within walking distance. :-) read more

I don't want to be too harsh towards a place I've only eaten at once in several years and it was on a busy holiday, I took my wife here for Mother's Day. We still got seated right away, but where we could sit was very unclear, and even though there was plenty empty, we couldn't sit in the patio where my wife wanted, in spite of it being about 75% full and clearly being used. Our server was really nice and really tried, but she was struggling with what was available, didn't understand what gluten-free meant, and was apparently having a difficult night with the cook who was not letting us order things like a side of shrimp. We ended up with leftovers trying to make an enjoyable meal, because the menu was a little strange and I had no idea they limited what you can order because of the holiday, making our options much smaller and much less appealing. In the end we over paid and we were not really happy with the food, it was a lesson to be learned. I think if we ever go here again, I would call and confirm the menu first, as what they show on their website and what they have in the restaurant do not always match up and there's no easily discernable way to know what is going to be available. The ambience and vibe was overall the best part. We met another couple there and ended up talking for quite some time. The decorations and vintage aspects of the place are every well designed, and even though we weren't able to sit outside, that area is quite beautiful. We left our server a nice tip, even though she seemed to be struggling a bit, which is understandable for a busy day, she refilled our drinks (once) and was really trying. Really, the poor balance between food quality and price, the strange seemingly niche menu with very little available to order compared to online, and the cooks unwillingness to so much as do a side order when the limited menu made it very hard for us to find food my wife could eat, were the main detractors. We almost got up and left after it was so difficult just to get something that my wife could eat or that even looked appetizing for me, and ultimately, I kind of wish we had and just came back another day. 4.5 stars. I have been here more times than I can count. I've had a handful of favorites and wow dishes. Just came on a dinner date and ate outside with Hubbs under sparkly lights & canopies of trees. The table was small but it brought us closer physically and our conversation intimately. I highly recommend this place for a date. Just the decor alone sparks conversation, the dessert choices are plentiful, yummy, and made in house. I have gotten the Lavender Panna Cotta, Chocolate Mousse, Yin & Yang. Hubby opts more for baked pies with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Our favorite recent dishes we get are the portobello fries, Thai steak salad, the salmon with creamy mashed potato, and spinach, the seafood bowl dish. The French toast is crazy good and tastes like dessert, Hubby loved the Huevos Rancheros. The best part of this place is more likely than not, there will be at least 1 dish here someone will like and will leave happy because the food is so varied. Lately our server, the tallish guy with a shaved head gave us great service and we laughed at his humor & jokes. Come early for breakfast for their yummy & varied breakfasts and they're open pretty late, every time I've came they've been open have not waited long at all ever, so we come here for after dinner desserts and drinks too. My main and only debbie downer is on weekends their brunch goes until 3ish and I really don't like that because I'm not a brunch type gal but Hubby loves it. I prefer lunch and dinner foods. So make sure you browse and like the menu if you are okay with that sort of food fare. Great for groups! My group was willing to sit outside, so we were seated fairly quickly for weekend brunch. This place has a large menu of breakfast (scrambled, French toast, etc.) and lunch (think sandwiches, salads, etc.) that make it diverse enough for people with different tastes. I shared the Savannah French Toast ($16) (because of the peaches) and the Scottish Scramble ($21) to get some protein in. Prices were fair, but I probably wouldn't get the Scottish Scramble again (I would've rather had their salmon and eggs separately). The potatoes needed more salt, but that was provided at the table. The French toast was what I was craving and was definitely the highlight. Pretty no frills in terms of taste and texture, but the log shape made the presentation interested, and I liked the amount of fruit it was topped with. read more

My wife and I love coming here and sharing both the French toast and a savory item (our favorite tends to be the Scottish Scramble. The Tower potatoes that come with the scramble are also excellent. Excellent ambiance, no matter whether you sit indoors or outdoors. There are cool plants and pieces of art everywhere. Don't be alarmed by the long wait time when you check in. Though one time when they said 40 min and it was 40 min, we have had multiple instances of vast overestimations. Once we were told 30 min and it was 5 min. We also were told it would be 1.5-2 hours for our party of 9 and it only ended up being 30 min. Only ever been for brunch, but have also heard good things about dinner. read more

Went last night and I don't know if my tastes have changed or what but did not have the best time. I ordered the Easter African Veggie burger and it arrived with one lone wilted piece of lettuce on top (truly, it was pretty comical), mushrooms which I had asked to not have on it, some roasted onions, and.... nothing else. The veggie patty was very dry, but ok. Sauce that it comes with was good but provided a very small amount. Fries were a bit bland. Had a really refreshing agua fresca drink and was pleased that it came with one free refill. Service was good, no problems there. Atmosphere was ok, nice evening for sitting on the patio but it was kind of ruined by ruminating on how much I would be paying for a sub par meal and the kicker was the cigar smoke wafting over from the smoke shop next to the theater. I've been here many times but the last couple of visits have mired my memories of this place. First off it was a surprise anniversary breakfast that my boyfriend brought me and the ambiance of this place is amazing! I was told the wait for this place can take quite some time and I'm glad that when my boyfriend and I got there it was just a 10 minute wait. But just the area while waiting was beautiful. I hadn't even gotten to sit down to view the menu to be in awe of this place. Once we sat down to view the menu it was just one thing over the other and I wasn't sure what to pick. Luckily the service we got was amazing. Our server went over the menu since it was my first time to the tower cafe. He made all the food sound more delicious and I was even more unsure what I wanted. I asked our server what he would recommend, he recommended the enchiladas de Oaxaca. Such a great dish! My boyfriend got the French toast which was best French toast I've ever tasted. We shared our dishes with each other and honestly loved every bite. I would recommend visiting this place at least once when you're in the Sacramento area. This was the first time in greater than 30 years that I've been disappointed in Tower Cafe, while the menu is full of great options my favorite is the Jerk Chicken. If you're making Tower Cafe your choice it's an Epic must try, it's authentic and delicious. However, on this particular visit I was informed that it wasn't available until 4pm, understandable I can live with that policy/practice. I opted to have the All-American Burger and Fries but was informed that you couldn't get Fries either until 4pm and it was 2pm. Unacceptable, who has Burgers on the lunch menu, that states Fries as an option but then tells you that Fries aren't available until they're serving dinner. How difficult is it to turn-around a French Fry order. The atmosphere is always pleasant, today was a perfect day to take advantage of their beautiful outdoor dining area which is a more unique outdoor dining experience than any other in the city. The wait staff is professional and attentive. To be fair Tower is always 5 rating as a result of its consistency, the ridiculousness of not serving French Fries during the lunch hour was simply a turn-off. I'll be anxiously awaiting to revise my review to a 5 after my next visit. Maybe I'm being petty, maybe I'm the only person that expects Fries with their burger? read more

Fabulous menu- hard to choose what to order. I've heard many great things about this Sacramento landmark & was excited to try. Visited for the first time on a weekday evening and left SO disappointed. No one in the restaurant seemed to know what brewery it came from, odd. We were told it was a chili cider but it was incredibly sweet and had no spice ($10/pint yikes!). I chose not to get a cocktail since the house selections sound very sweet and I prefer a more balanced drink. Appetizer: We ordered the seasonal octopus and shrimp ceviche with mango ($19). The fruit and vegetables were fresh and the protein was plentiful (albeit frozen seafood), but the dish fell short because it lacked balance--it again had absolutely no spice. Entree: I ordered the Earth burger ($18). It sounded good on paper but was the worst veggie burger I've had in my life. Bland patty which disintegrated during the first bite, under seasoned onions, and weirdly sweet curry sauce. I asked for hot sauce to hopefully salvage my meal--even their 'spicy' angry salsa was bland. My husband had the Malaysian chicken sandwich which he liked ($21). The chicken was juicy and flavorful. I will say that our server was nice and attentive enough and the restaurant has a charming ambiance. The patio is beautiful. Tower Cafe has been voted Sacramento's best brunch spot for several years. If I'm not mistaken, they do not take reservations for weekend brunch. We arrived around 2pm on Sat and were seated right away. There was a short wait for outside table. We knew that we wanted to get the French toast because it's their most popular and amazing dish! The menu is a lot bigger than I expected. It took me few minutes to decide what to get. I finally decided on Chorizo Con Huevos. It wasn't anything exciting but very good. My friend got the Tuna Melt and I enjoyed that more. The bread is perfectly toasted with melted cheese, avo and tuna fish. There is something about warm sandwiches - it's so comforting. The highlight is the French Toast! We got the Churro French Toast (Special). It was a thick toast that looks like pancakes. It was incredible. Every bite was moist, sweet and savory. The homemade syrup made it even more special. Last but not least, the cocktails are on point here! I had La Frida, prosecco with pomegranate-blood orange nectar and pineapple juice. It's something different than the typical Mimosa! Very refreshing and they have so many options. Pick you poison! I've heard great things about Tower Cafe since before we even moved to Sacramento. We finally stopped by for lunch and had the chance to experience it ourselves. First off, it's so nice that this plaza has dedicated parking. It makes it so much easier to plan a visit knowing you won't have to circle around to find a spot. As you approach you already start to see the great plants and trees along the sidewalk, this helps to take you out of the city feel, right next to the traffic and gives you a taste of what you're about to experience. As we approached the entrance we were greeted by a very friendly staff member who asked if we'd like to sit inside or outside. The weather was too perfect, so we chose outside. The whole dining area is beautifully shaded by interesting plants and trees. It creates natural shade, great lighting for photos and makes you feel like you've been transported. The menu has food and drink options for every taste. Definitely check out their specials, and have a backup order in case they've run out of your first choice. We ended up ordering the Hibiscus-Coconut Mojito and the Caipirinha for drinks and the Tower Monte Cristo and Thai Green Curry for our meal. The cocktails were so good and very refreshing. The food was also delicious. Although, one thing I noticed is the green beans didn't have the ends cut off so the tough stem ends were still on some pieces. The flavor of the dish overall was awesome though. The portion sizes are generous and the fries were really good too! This would be a great date spot and we saw a lot of friends meeting up as well as some business meetings while we were there. I would definitely go again and I look forward to trying more of the menu. read more
