Food (5/5): Came here with a large group. Overall very solid food. All the appetizers that came out were delicious. This included the cornbread, shrimp, empanadas, and oysters. The cocktail and wine I got were also on point. My favorite part was my main dish of the pork chop. It was amazingly cooked with no chewy parts and the flavoring was top notch. Service (5/5): Really friendly and helpful service. Food came out at a good pace. I also really liked how this place makes booking reservations convenient. Other places require deposits or credit card holds for large groups, but this place made it easy to book for a large group and they came prepared with a nice table ready for us. Ambiance (5/5): Awesome ambiance in the restaurant with a classic American feel. The restaurant was clean and spacious. The only improvement would be to have a bathroom on the first floor. Happy Hour 4-5 - great prices on drinks and food. We had Kolsh- a favorite from 4 Points. Then we had: Pimento Cheese - very authentic, rich- and they gave us extra toast points Chicken Wings- seriously great chicken wings - some of the best I've ever had. They have lots of crunchy skin- one of my issues with wings is that they don't have enough crunchy skin- but this crunchy skin is great. Buttermilk biscuits- really rich- plenty of butter and pepper jelly. Ham Flight- never have I had a ham flight- but ham flight with more of the delicious biscuits! Jumbo BBQ Gulf Shrimp- the sauce is to die for - just enough bbq flavor without feeling like it's slathered and be sure to dip the bread into that sauce. The service was friendly and fast! Their fried chicken was juicy and had a great exterior but I wish the inside of the chicken was seasoned/marinated better. Once you ate that delicious skin, the inside of the chicken didn't really have much flavor. The mashed potatoes were some of the best mashed potatoes I've ever had. Super smooth and flavorful! Their biscuits were so delicious, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The broccoli w/ cheese was good, it tasted like how I would expect it to taste like! Our group made an appointment to visit Town Hall. I had never heard of this place before but a foodie in our group said pre covid, it was really difficult to get in. First, I love the atmosphere. It's in a beautiful brick building and the lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Although there is a second floor, we were told that it was closed for the time being, so we sat on the first floor. I appreciated that tables/seating had been removed to practice covid guidelines, which I appreciated. We ordered a handful of appetizers- everything from okra, pork belly, pig ears, cornbread, salad, and more! My favorite appetizer was probably the cornbread. For my entree, I ordered their fried chicken. They gave a generous portion. We also split a dessert which I believe was a butterscotch pudding. This place was just OK. Went for brunch with a group of 6. We sat outside on their patio. If did not seem to be incredibly busy. We ordered wine, beer, and a Bloody Mary to drink. Take note there is no beer on tap, all bottles. The Bloody Mary (mine) was pretty basic and tasted a little watered down. For the food, we ordered a bunch of chicken waffles, a Benedict, cornbread, and a side of jambalaya (?). The food took forever to come out. However, everyone enjoyed the chicken and waffles. I wish it would come with some syrup, and I would have asked but no one came to check on us after the food was served. The cornbread was in a skillet and also very tasty. Our waitress finally came out to bring us the check. We then asked if we could split the check into 3 (for each couple) and she appeared very annoyed. When she finally came back she said she couldn't do it since she had already printed the check and "had she known" she could have separated the checks ahead of time. Unfortunately we didn't know that the next time we saw our server after ordering was when she brought us the check. So my advice is to tell the server when you're ordering. I'm sentimental about this place. Town Hall was one of my first nice restaurants I visited the summer after graduating college. I went here pre-covid for a birthday dinner. The fried chicken and barbecue shrimp were fantastic. I have the cookbook but I don't think their fried chicken recipe is in there. I'll miss this place. Super friendly staff with a great menu. They serve what's in season and locally fresh. I had the okra fries, butternut squash empanadas and gnocchi. All three were delicious! This is an essential post work happy hour spot , can attest since I've come here often past few months that has a nice ambiance and food. We started off with the deep fried okra which I've never had they were crunchy and just the right amount of salty. The service was very good, and people were friendly and attentive. My sister-in-law had the fried chicken, which she shared a little bit with us and it was quite delicious. We would definitely come back. I thought I loved the chicken sandwich here but during my most recent visit, I was pretty disappointed. This is my second time here and both times I have ordered the fried chicken sandwich. The first time I came here, I thought it was decent-- I thought it was even on my top list of fried chicken sandwiches place to go. But the second time (most recent visit), the friend chicken was not hot and fresh and it had a weird unfamiliar taste to me. I don't know why but it tasted as if something was either spoiled or I was just straight up not used to the seasoning. Other than that, the starters were good, especially the okra! When we sat down for this meal I was expecting to be giving around three stars... we were outside in an area alone and the wait staff had seemed to forget us (or was super busy which is also likely.) Needless to say, I absolutely loved this meal and the service quickly redeemed itself! Our drinks came out almost instantly, served by whom I imagine is the manager. She was cheerful, pleasant, and attentive. She then had the staff move a second heater over to our table without us asking - and this level of consideration was perhaps my favorite part of the night! (Also, the hostess brought over water for our dogs without us asking which was lovely.) The food was delicious. We ordered the corn soup, the shrimp, the jalapeño cornbread, the jambalaya, and the collard greens. Along with two hot toddies that warmed us up! The flavors of each item were wonderful. I don't think I could pick my favorite dish, I could pick my least favorite which were the collard greens, but they were still pretty darn good! If I had to suggest you get three of the five we ordered, I would highly recommend the corn soup and the shrimp, and then tell you to get the jalapeño cornbread to dip in both the soup and the sauce of the shrimp dish. We recently had a work lunch at Town Hall, and I was pretty excited - I had never been and had heard great things. We had a reservation for 12 people at 12:30pm on a Wednesday - we arrived on time were seated promptly. We ordered some appetizers while deciding on our entrees: - Jalapeño corn bread - Crispy fried okra - Buttermilk biscuits - Beet salad - Tuna tartare All of the appetizers were pretty good, but the corn bread was the clear winner - warm, sweet, and spicy! For my main, I ordered the burger with cheddar cheese and a side of fries. The food took awhile to come out, and my burger was a bit over cooked. It still tasted good, and the side of fries were plentiful - so pretty much a win in my book! Finally for dessert, we ordered a few slices of chocolate cake and ice cream for the table to share. It was my birthday dinner and I've always wanted to come here. Our great experience started before we even walked in. I'd made a reservation on Resy but made it for 2 instead of 3 diners. I called Town Hall and explained we'd have 3 and the host was so warm and nice in letting us know it was no problem. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly by that same person. We were treated like long lost friends from the moment we walked in. Our server, Jilly, was fantastic. So friendly. Again, it was like we'd known each other forever. My wife admired her cool earrings and Jilly gave them to her! We ordered a nice bottle of wine and some oysters and they were wonderful. I had the prawns and grits, my wife ordered the smoked duck and we were both extremely pleased. We loved the interior and have already decided to come back and have drinks in the great bar area. Every single person we came into contact with was cheerful. It was an upbeat, stylish and friendly vibe which is just what we needed. Right now, the menu is very New Orleans. There is a burger that looked amazing but for the most part, if that NOLA thing is not what you're looking for, it might not be your jam. The once hotspot is perhaps showing age after a decade. The food is still tasty but you'll get better service and ambience elsewhere in the neighborhood. Southern fare often seems to thrive in SF (especially after a week of salads for lunch) and Town Hall is no exception. They do a pretty solid fried chicken that is crispy and well seasoned. Don't care for the waffles but the chicken is good enough on its own. The ribs are pretty comforting too with the tender smoked meat. The tuna tartare starter is surprisingly spicy but the fried green tomatoes serve as a nice counterpoint. The bill adds up pretty quickly with wine and when you factor in the cramped seating and nonchalant service - a tad pricy. Sunday night Meat 'n Threes pre-fixe might be a good time though to sample the classics for less at this local favorite. read more

Visited here last year when things were starting to open up again and were happily seated at their outdoor patio area. It was about winter time but they did have outside heaters to keep us warm and cozy. We tried the fried chicken and their delicious warm homemade biscuits with their unique pepper jelly which was surprisingly yummy! I say surprisingly due to the fact that I'm more of a jam and butter fan for bread and biscuits, but their pepper jelly worked and enjoyed it! We recently came back here for drinks and dessert just finishing dinner nearby and the hubby said he couldn't of had a better espresso martini, he's been ordering a few of these lately, and the bartender made it exceptionally and we will probably be back again. I finally had the chance to eat at Town Hall yesterday with colleagues and really enjoyed it. The ambiance was wonderful and unexpected with gorgeous natural light, rustic decor, and a spacious layout in the main dining room that still feels cozy amidst the surrounding Salesforce buildings and transit center. We arrived right when they opened at 11:30 am without reservations (as we weren't sure of how many were joining us), but all was fine and we were given the option to either sit in the dining room, on the covered patio, or at the communal table near the bar. I would recommend making a reservation for lunch just in case, however, keep in mind that they have a strict cancellation policy. The lunch menu for February featured a lot of comfort food dishes. We started with the Jalapeño Cornbread served in a mini iron skillet and the Buttermilk Biscuits with House-Made Pepper Jelly. Y-U-M for all the bread lovers out there (myself included). I would recommend also ordering a salad to break up all the carbs even though both were still delicious and rich in flavor. I ordered the Fried Catfish, which came topped with sweet and sour peanuts and rice with bacon, black-eyed peas, smoked fish broth, and crispy kale. The piece of fish was generous and I loved the flavor of the rice with all of its ingredients. Some in our group thought their food was really good like I did whereas others thought it was just ok, so we had mixed reviews here. Overall, this wasn't something that I could order at just any restaurant in downtown SF, so I was excited about my dish. It was on the pricier side for lunch ($22), but we were celebrating a birthday, so perfect for a special occasion. Speaking of birthdays, our waiter overheard us saying happy birthday and took it upon himself to bring a surprise dessert, which was really thoughtful and appreciated. Being originally from Atlanta, but a constant traveler is fun because I love to check out restaurants that that boast about serving up some authentic soul food. A local friend suggested that we meet here around 8 o'clock mid week and have some ribs and salmon. I was running a bit late, so My date was waiting for me at the bar with a hand crafted cocktail. The bartender was so pleasant that we decided to stay at the bar for dinner as well. Great choice. On a work trip, I came here for happy hour with a few friends. Obviously drinks are a must, but dang! Talk about delicious food! This place serves Southern cuisine but before I even start with the food, the bartenders and servers here are all so friendly and so nice. My coworker was recently in a car accident and had been in a wheelchair for months. He's up and walking now, and the staff whom have gotten to known him in these months, were all genuinely happy and excited to see him well. But besides that, the bartenders know their stuff. They made great food recommendations and understood that we didn't want to get stuffed on large entrees (even though those are the plates that cost more). We had the corn bread, biscuits, BBQ shrimp, and veal meatballs, split between 3 of us. We were pretty full by the end of it. I don't eat seafood so I didn't try the shrimp but that BBQ sauce was HEA-VEN-LY. I was recently in Charleston and had a bad experience with biscuits--hard to believe, right? This place restored my faith in biscuits. My tip: dip the biscuit or corn bread in the BBQ sauce. It made my night. We took an Uber here, but I'd imagine parking is no fun around this area (or San Francisco in general). I know it's easy to overlook this place when it has an average 3-star rating, but if you're around for happy hour, I'd recommend stopping by. read more

Pretty lame experience. First they told us our reservation was only for 2 people, and not three- despite OpenTable clearly listing 3 (I checked again, just in case I'd made a mistake). Then they acted as if they were doing my group a favor by still being able to "find space for us". It took them about 10-15 minutes to even acknowledge us and take our order, then almost 30 minutes for the food to arrive. For a lunch joint, that's too long, especially for sandwiches. To top it off, the sandwiches weren't even that great. They tasted fine, but are extremely overpriced. For less than half the price (and less than half the wait), you can get a killer chicken sandwich from The Bird down the road. It also was really loud. I won't come back. YUM!!! What a great little spot. Town Hall really sticks out, surrounded by glass and steel giants, this 3 story brick building is welcoming and unique. The building was once the original San Francisco town hall and there are interesting pictures in the restaurant showing its history. The food is homey, rich, and delicious. The portions are huge! They offer individual and family-style portions. The beet salad was one of my favorites, fresh and acidy and smoky and crisp!!! It was a welcome respite from the dense carb and fat dishes that make up the majority of the menu. We had the chicken and waffles, biscuits, fried okra, a pot of chocolate and cream, and the salad. Three friends and I came to Town Hall for dinner on a Monday night and we sat outside, on the patio. While the restaurant seemed quite busy inside, the outside patio was pretty empty and emptied out more throughout the night. The service is extremely slow here. We arrived around 6:30pm for dinner, and put our order in around 7pm. We waited for our food for over an hour - close to 75 minutes is my guess - before anything showed up. We waited and waited and tried to speak to the waiter a few times to follow up on our order, but nary an appetizer showed up. I highly suspect that they forgot our order altogether. Around 60 minutes in, they felt bad enough and brought us a free appetizer to appease us. Given we sat down at 6:30pm, we didn't get our food until almost 8:30pm. It was pretty extreme. The chicken main was very large and delicious, but to be honest everything was overshadowed by how long the food took to arrive. They could've served us a Michelin meal, but none of it mattered as it was all ruined by the bad timing and how we couldn't get them to focus on our table / bring anything to our table. perhaps we should've sat inside, but still pretty bad. read more

Another SF restaurant that has a surprising space. Being in SF most restaurants in the area have a fairly small space for the restaurant but Town Hall has an unexpectedly large interior and even covered outdoor area that can accomodate groups of all sizes (be sure to make a reservation online ahead of time!). Once seated the menu item that stuck out to me (and seems to be one of their most popular items) was the fried chicken sandwich for lunch. The lunch dish came with a fried chicken sandwich with a side of seasoned chips. If you're not feeling some chips and want something a little more hearty you can substitute the chips for a side of fries. As we waited for our dishes, we got an order of their Jalapeno corn bread as a started for the table and this is a MUST GET. The starter comes to your table piping hot with the honey butter already melted on top. The corn break holds together really well and it was easy for us to cut the bread into slices onto our plates. It had the right amount of heat but not overpowering. Would get this to share again. We also got a side of the Charred Broccolini to share and TBH I would pass on this one next time. It was a little too spicy for my palette and could have used a little more lemon or garlic to balance out the chili flakes. After ~15-20 mins we finally got main the dishes to our table and I was ready to eat. I ended up getting the slaw and bacon bit sauce on the side since I'm not a saucy person and I thought it was a good choice as I could add on as much as I wanted. By having the sauces on the side the bread held up well with the 2 pieces of chicken. The chicken was juicy and had a great crunch on the outside - would be good alone as well. I enjoyed the bacon bit sauce as it was a little spicy and added some savoriness to the sandwich. I would come back to get this sandwich again even with the $16 price tag. Super disappointed with this place. :'( The team raved that this place was phenomenal the first time they came here, so they made reservations to come here at 12-noon on a Wednesday. The service to get seated was sub-par. It took a good 20 minutes before our waiter took our order, and another 20 minutes before our first appetizers arrived. We ordered the biscuits and the cornbread, both which were actually great; but then there was no food for another 30 minutes. By that point, we were very hungry. Our food arrived at 1:10 pm, which was quite slow, given that we had reservations at 12. Maybe it was an off day, but unfortunately, no one was impressed with their main course this time around. :( read more
