Amidst the soaring skyscrapers lies a brick three-story brick building that can be easily passed by, or sticks out like a sore thumb. Yet inside, its serving up some southern-inspired fare thats comfortable with service that leaves little to be desired. The menu features a California take on southern-style dishes. The chicken liver mousse wasn't something I'd expect to find on their menu, but it was velvety and flavorful. With the saltiness of the chicken cracklings and the whole grain mustard, was a very well composed dish. The pork belly was beautifully prepared and the creamy grits gave it a balance to the bite of the braised kale that accompanied the dish. Don't go there with a diet in mind, cause the fried chicken beckons. Simply breaded and fried, it has a nice kick of spice that makes it finger licking good. I definitely gave up on being proper with a fork and knife and went to town with the moist chicken. Leave room for dessert, cause the chocolate pot de creme was a nice sweet ending to the dinner. Service was really good and very attentive. It was a well-timed orchestration of dishes to arrive so that we could savor and enjoy our bites, while digesting to prepare for the next course. It's a problemo when the service is slow-po. Especially during lunch hour when working folks need to get back to the office in a timely manner. Speed is key! Please pick up the speed! Friendly staff. Food was good. Our table ordered the bisquits with jam and cornbread - both were warm and delicious. Then I ordered the Po boy cod sandwich with oyster roulaid. The cod was deep fried with heavy breading but I can taste the cod and oyster remoulade that was slathered onto the buttery crunchy bun. The fries that I ordered with the dish was too crispy for me, it was overdone for sure. It's a busy and nice restaurant but as I said, speed is key for luncher's, like myself. read more

Pleasantly surprised it wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be. For dinner, I ordered the Prime Bavette Steak with piperade, fingerling potato, & red wine jus. I was told by them that this is classic southern food (normally I avoid that cuisine since I can't find good vegetarian options). One of the best meals I've had, and if this is Southern food then I'm all for it! The jalapeno corn bread in the beginning was so buttery and the flavor incredible; I would've ordered another one for the main course. Had a reservation for a group at 11:30 am on a Thursday morning. They won't take your order until everyone in the group has arrived, and the last person ended up coming around 12, so we didn't get our orders taken until about 12:15. Being that a couple of us had a hard stop at 1, this made for an extremely rushed lunch for us. By the time we got our food, we had to also ask for a box to take back half of the meal as we didn't have enough time to eat it all. I think overall they should have had more staff working. This place filled up extremely fast during the lunch rush and I don't think the service could necessarily keep up with that pace. As for the food, I got the Faith's Ham and Cheese toast. I guess I should have deduced from the description that it would just be a slice of toast with some stuff on it, but because it was listed under "Sandwiches", I assumed it would be more of a hearty meal. I would describe this dish like an Eggs Benedict, but with only one egg and one toast versus the two that you would normally get with a full meal. The dish was ok. The first bite was tasty, but after three bites, the sauce and the flavor became a little redundant for me. On the other hand, my bf got their pastrami sandwich which was definitely a very hearty meal. He took half of it back, and the sandwich was still good the next day, even when cold. Jessica took care of us like family and made the amazing meal even better. Her menu suggestions were spot on. The buttermilk biscuits, though small, are bites of perfection and for some of our party, the best thing ever eaten. Not pictured are the fresh oysters and crispy pig ears. The fried rice with anchovies were not as fishy as I thought it might be. The duck breast was cooked to perfection (I have a fear of dry over cooked duck). Four different eaters left very happy. Back when I first started Yelping, Town Hall was one of the most popular restaurants in SF. It felt I would hear nothing but good things about the food and reservations always seemed to be a tough get (at normal dinner hours, anyways). But now? Oh how times have changed. While the menu does change often, some dishes seem to stay the same or see only mild changes (e.g. the fried chicken is a staple, but the sides will vary). In any case, there is an abundance of starters and entrees to choose from that is both modern and classic. Just like with the decor, which makes Town Hall great for just about any occasion, from work dinners to dates. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up, though I initially wasn't so sure. Town Hall is worthy of four stars based on food alone, but the prices for the starters is a little steep (good thing we were all sharing!). Actually there are two good reasons for me to update my Town Hall review from two years back. The first is the new lunchtime option of an open BBQ in the adjacent courtyard. Available weekdays from 11:30AM to 2:30PM, it opened a month ago with free BBQ for anyone who knew about it, so the line was down the block on that day. Lines have been more manageable these days since thy charge $8 for most of their items like a quarter-slab of the Smoked St. Louis-Style Ribs or the Grilled Andouille Sausage Po'boy. Since my workplace is very close by, I've since had a chance to try the Pulled Pork Sandwich and the Hobbs Calabrese Link Po' boy with Peppers and Onions - both awfully good though my popularity back at the office dipped considerably with my post-meal gaseous state. I say if you're nearby in the FiDi, you should check it out because it was a smart ploy on the part of Town Hall to encourage traffic to their somewhat out-of-the-way location. Kudos for that decision. Nonetheless, my second reason to update my review is that I have finally had dinner here after years of work-related lunches and happy hours at that community table. Jamie W. was rewarded by his boss with a $100 gift certificate, so we decided to have a full three-course meal there. Shoot the works, sorta speak. We went at the last minute, so we took advantage of their front red-tented area where you can sit amid white tablecloths, heat lamps, and like-minded procrastinators who didn't think to make a reservation. And best of all, you get more elbow room and are not treated like second-class diners. For our appetizers, we went for two - one a hit, one a marginal miss. The hit was the $12.50 Roasted Veal Meatballs, Potato Puree and Green Peppercorn Sauce - unadventurous but hearty fare with the ground veal nicely prepared (see my photo). The near-miss was the $13 Crispy Squash Blossoms, Four-Cheese Filling with Basil Pesto and Cherry Tomato Sauces - overpriced and oversalted despite a nice concept and rather soggy considering all the effort placed on making it a more delicate treat (see my photo). Sogginess proved to be a slight problem with Jamie's entree of choice - the $23 Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Toy Box Squash, Smashed Potatoes and Home-Style Bacon Gravy (see my photo). It looked like a home run, but I think in their effort to make the poultry moist, they steamed the crispy skin as well. It was still better than most fried chicken you would find in such tony establishments. I went for the $26.50 Peanut Tasso-Crusted Pork Chop, Spicy Dirty Rice, Fava Beans and Ham Hock Pepper Jelly (see my photo). That was one huge piece of pig saturated with way too many peanuts, but it was very juicy regardless. I just wish they warned me about the twine that was holding it all together. I was able to get an unexpected pre-flossing had I not noticed it pulling on my fork. As a side, we had the $6 Warm Jalapeno Cornbread, which came country-style in a corncob baking plate. Really addictive. Dessert, usually their hallmark, was also hit and a semi-miss. The miss was the $8.50 Butterscotch & Chocolate Pot de Creme with Buttercrunch Pieces - a well-made but bland concoction more fitting at a retirement home along with jello parfaits and tapioca bowls (see my photo). Nirvana came with the $8.50 "Rocky Road", which combined small Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwiches with Smoked Almonds and three Toasted Marshmallows (see my photo). Perfect in its homespun, nostalgic simplicity. We ended up $20 north of the gift certificate, but that's OK. I'm glad we finally had the full dining experience. To continue our "Date Night Thursday" routine, S.O. and I came here for dinner... and since he knew I'm going on my "pork chop" phase. We walked from my work, convenient since it was a beautiful Thursday and of course everyone was out and about in downtown = saved us from looking for parking! We walked in around 5:30 and I was quite surprised to see that their Happy Hour crowd wasn't even quite there yet. It was dead. A sign of recession or were people still at work? It was both. We waited by the bar thinking the host was going to come back anytime and one of the servers did say that the host was coming back. However, after waiting and standing for a good 15 mins without the infamous host coming, the one of the token male bartender told us that they don't open their dining until 6. Hmm, that would have helped... communication folks! We then decide to seat at the bar to get drinks. They had all of Hanger One's goodies so that was plus. However, their female bartenders...perhaps it was their time of the month but damn, they were snappy and not at all "happy" - we waited until two of them finished talking (of course, how dare us patrons, interrupt their conversation!) In my head, they're really scoring points in my book! We get our drinks, then finally gets seated. Our moods changed since our server and bus boy that helped us were far more friendlier than those bartenders! Thank goodness! S.O. and I ordered the following: - Buttermilk biscuits, Prosciutto de Parma, red pepper jelly = Wow! This was delicious! They gave plenty of prosciutto...it also came with two buttermilk biscuits but you can order more if your party is bigger. - Beeler Farms pork chop, creamed spinach, crispy cheddar grits, white peach chutney, tasso = S.O. and I both ordered this... and my gosh, it was a freaking pork chops! It was huge and looked good BUT looks are deceiving. Our pork chop was tasty and flavorful but it was hard. I wished it was tender... chewing was chewy but the white peach chutney did add a new flavor to the dish so that was good. - Butterscotch and Chocolate Pot de Crème topped with buttercrunch = WOW oh WOW! This was delicious! Our server told us that this is one of their signature dessert so we had to get it and boy, that was a good recommendation! The butterscotch just melts in your mouth and it was creamy and just the right sweetness. Having the buttercrunch to scoop the butterscotch, divine! - Town Hall's Coffee and Doughnuts warm brioche donuts, Blue Bottle coffee ice cream, chicory streusel = MY FAVORITE! Our bus boy told us that this is his favorite because it just melts in your mouth and he wasn't wrong! The doughnut holes was a good portion for two and the ice cream just went hand in hand. I actually wanted to finish this but opted to share it with the S.O. Overall, it was a good evening shared with my S.O. but I'll probably opt out to go here for drinks/dessert rather than dinner. I've only been there for lunch, so I am not ready for a full review, but I thought to get out what I ate/saw. First of all, Town Hall is one of the closest restaurant to where I live, yet I didn't dine there for close to a year. I've made multiple attempts to eat there, but I was unsuccessful in getting a reservation at the time I wanted (I often call last minute). DECOR: Wood flooring with country side decor with tall ceilings. Small out door patio seating with effective heating equipments. FOOD: Their burger comes with chips, but no french fries!!! Hey, you pay a lot for a burger and you don't even get fries? I've tried their whole trout with grits ($17). Taste was excellent. Fish was done just right and they didn't over salt it. Grits had a nice subtle sweet flavor to it. Very nice. Portion wasn't big, but they give you nice sourdough bread, so I kept eating that. This coming Tuesday an old old old friend is coming into town for a conference. I have known since before kindergarten and have been close friends all this time. He's now a detective in the town we grew up in. Whenever we sit down to catch up, he tells me stories of all of our old friends from school that he has hauled off to jail. But if a restaurant can't get a good-tasting burger to me, do I really want to try something else? Something is wrong here. It starts with the meat. That might be doubly true for the burger. Which sadly had gristly bits that stuck in my teeth. Then there's the prep. My medium burger was somewhat pink in the middle but charred black on the outside, so...more grinding. Finally the bun. So overheated that it was more like a crouton that broke into bits as I tried to eat it. Had to go back to knife and fork. $23 not well spent. On the plus side, the signature bacon-infused bourbon old fashioned was delicious. After trying their chicken sandwich multiple times I've given up on that too - too many veins and connective tissue - I'd rather have a smaller sandwich that I can eat all of. I specifically came to Town Hall, because it was one of the top picks when I researched fried chicken. It would've been a quick 10 minute walk from my financial district hotel, but somehow I missed my turn and ended up walking 3x as far as I looped all the way down to 4th Street. I called the restaurant worried I'd lose my table. They assured me it was fine and that I should take my time. Phew, that helped calm me down. The restaurant is smack dab on the corner of Howard & Fremont. The decor is rustic with white paneling, wooden chairs & tables, and accents of brick. Vincent, my server, was friendly, personable, and knew what he was talking about. I took his recommendation and tried the Heirloom tomato salad with homemade smoked ricotta, purslane, olives, and cucumber. It was light and refreshing, exactly what I needed to go with my hearty fried chicken w/rosemary roasted marble potatoes. The chicken lived up to my expectations. It was crispy, juicy, and oh so flavorful. I'm a big wimp when it comes to spices, so I was dripping with sweat, but I kept eating since it was so good. This place is amazing!! The food here is unique, fairly priced, and portioned well. They have excellent starters which is a must-try when dining in. A few that I recommend is their fried oysters with glazed pork belly and their BBQ Shrimp on top of toast and spiced sauce poured on top. A real popular entree is their Town Hall fried chicken which comes in 3 pieces of breasts and potato & spinach salad. The chicken is crispy and fried to perfection! I think they should just serve the whole bottle of Crystal hot sauce rather than inside a small cup. I also recommend their ham selection. The Tenneshootoe selection is the best! It's served on a wooden cutting board along with four fluffy mini biscuits, honey butter, and killer jalapeño jelly. Mix all of these together on top of the biscuit and it's on a whole different level of tastes. I recommend trying a few cocktails of their menu as well. They have special cocktails that are definitely worth the try such as their Town Hall Old-Fashioned (bacon-maple infused whiskey). End your night with ordering a dessert. I suggest having their Butterscotch and Chocolate Pot de Crème. This dessert is super delicious. It's almost like a fusion between custard, ganache, and pudding. It's topped with butter crunch which is almost like toffy. Overall, this place is great to go with a group of friends. I have been to Town Hall several times mostly for business functions involving their private room or a table of 6 or more. I never really paid attention to the quality of the food or service except to say it was always enjoyable. Besides drinks and apps at the bar, I had never come in for pleasure. I did so Friday evening with my partner and his sister. We had a reservation but arrived early hoping to have a drink at the bar beforehand but could not find seats. The gal that greeted and seated us, turned out to also be our waitress. After bringing us our first round of drinks, she offered to open and decant the bottle of red wine we had brought with us. We were engaged in conversation and hadn't looked at the menu but when it was time for a 2nd round, our waitress was nowhere to be found. I walked out to the front patio and found here there. After she delivered our 2nd round, we ordered dinner. It was a mixed bag. We started with jalapeno bread, shrimp and the bone marrow appetizer. I did not have any of the bone marrow, but understood it to be good, but skimpy. Otherwise the shrimp and cornbread were delicious. My partner ordered the snapper and the portion of fish was excellent but very small. His sister had the steak which was perfectly cooked and of an ample size. I had the fried chicken which was good, but I was disappointed by how much actual chicken was beneath all that coating. The mashed potatoes that came with the dish were sinfully good. I understand about the shortage in restaurant personnel but to the point where I you have to chase your waitress down after not seeing her for 25 minutes doesn't seem right especially at this type of establishment. For the remainder of the evening the service was on-point. I think management was involved in delivering parts of our meal. The food was good, but beware that it is a limited menu. My boyfriend and I went to Town Hall looking for a romantic, nice dinner. We went on a Monday and we didn't need a reservation, but the restaurant was pretty busy even at 9:00. We were promptly seated and our waitress was very sweet and pointed out her favorite dishes on the menu. We started off with the tuna tartare and OMG, please order this. I'm not even a fan of fish, and definitely not raw fish, but this was so good. The fish was really fresh and I love the fried green tomatoes on the side of the dish. We both later agreed that this appetizer was the best part of our meal. As the main course I ordered the fried chicken and he ordered the steak. My chicken came with mashed potatoes with bacon gravy and ham fried collard greens. I told our waitress that I don't eat pork and she quickly offered to replace the collard greens with their special broccoli and remove the bacon gravy. Our food came out promptly and I was impressed with the chicken. It was obviously fried yet it was extremely moist and juicy. The mashed potatoes were great but the broccoli was disgusting :( They were so peppery and the peppers ruined everything they touched, so the piece of chicken that touched the broccoli was inedible. My boyfriend enjoyed his steak, but said that he wasn't blown away. Served with red quinoa, asparagus, rhubarb, English peas, pine nuts, and Meyer lemon ($27). Highly recommend! My dinner companions enjoyed their entrees too -- one person got the "Grilled Pork Tenderloin and Belly with red pepper jelly, poblano grits, and spicy jus" ($28), and the other two got the "Chef's choice" vegetarian dish which looked like the side veggies for my trout entree. Since the Yelp reviews raved about the "Butterscotch & Chocolate Pot De Creme topped with buttercrunch" ($8.50) -- I ordered one for our table. Wow not only did I experience the best trout ever, I had the best pot de creme ever too! :) And due to our food coming out late (the restaurant was packed so it was understandable), they comped our dessert plus brought out brownies and ice cream :) Overall, great food -- definitely recommend the bacon-wrapped trout and for dessert, the butterscotch & chocolate pot de creme. Came here during a work lunch and it didn't seem too busy. We were seated immediately having already made reservations. It was mid 60s that day so they had the heater blasted and it was a bit hot in the patio/tent. The red tent makes it look as if they have a red light shining through and it almost makes your menu change colors too at the right lighting and angle. Cornbread- Great! Very tasty, soft, warm and they top it off with coarse salt! This was enough to share with 4 people comes in a pan and they give you a knife to serve. Bavette- the steak was great, moist and juicy. Came with a side of fries and and watercress salad. The fries were lightly seasoned and the dressing on the watercress was great. I'm not a fan of watercress, but I did enjoy the dressing. read more

No waiting for brunch and easy reservations bumps Town Hall from three to four stars. Dinner is probably still three stars for me. The chicken 'n waffles topped w/ Hobbs' bacon is a great deal at $16. I didn't try the waffle but the chicken was moist. Our group also ordered the scramble and purgatory eggs. I had the chicken-tasso hash with poached eggs, topped with pimento hollandaise for $14. This was not good...the bell peppers, yams and onions together created too sweet of a dish. I had to balance this with a lot of salt. Bluestem and Slow Club make better hashes. Best dish of the visit was the cornflake-crusted brioche French toast with caramelized bananas, whipped cream and bourbon caramel. This was $12. It was moist in the middle but the cornflake-crust gave it some texture. It was very similar to bread pudding. Went well with the Blue Bottle coffee. It's similar to the banana French toast with bourbon syrup/caramel that Slow Club and Mission Beach Cafe both serve up, but Town Hall one-ups them in execution. This is probably (and please correct me if I'm wrong because I want more HH before my commute!) the closest happy hour to the new Salesforce Transbay Terminal. Earlier this week, there was an accident on the bridge that prevented any buses from getting into the terminal for the start of rush hour. We were told to take BART or wait it out. I decided to look for a tipple and keep an eye on Google maps to see when traffic cleared. First check: 2.5 HOUR delay. Yikes. I ordered an $8 HH red wine. It was the Velvet Devil Merlot from WA which I've had before. Not great, but serviceable. Also got the blackened shrimp for $9, pretty nice, would order again. The bar was crowded, but as long as you get a seat, you should be fine. They are busy here, but it's not too hard to flag down a bartender when you're right in front of them. Traffic was down to a 30 min. delay, so I asked for a slightly dirty gin martini, bartender's choice on gin. He opted for Plymouth, which is a solid, solid choice. A well-made cocktail, olives were tasty, and it was $12 when I got the bill--absolutely reasonable for the area. I also tried the fried chicken tenders. Would have liked more seasoning in the batter, but the texture was good, and if you're into sweeter sauces, the Jack Daniel's BBQ sauce was fine. Town Hall never fails in the food department. They don't have an enormous menu but what they offer, they do well. We were a party of five including one child. There was no problem making a double double cheeseburger into a kid size and Mikey liked it! One adult burger, no substitutions, was also a hit. There were also two fried chicken meals. They come with mashed potatoes and red eye (bacon) gravy and some veggies and four good sized pieces of chicken. The breading is tasty and reheats well in the oven. Our last order was the Bibb lettuce salad. Delicious spin using peaches on the usual blue cheese, candied walnuts and bacon accoutrements. Followed it up with the prawn appetizer and together they made a very adequate meal. The prawns come with garlic toast but we threw in a biscuit "appetizer" as well. Delightful little biscuits with butter and pepper jelly. The service was spotty. The main server took our orders and delivered them, but there wasn't much follow up. The guys refilling water and wine were stellar. Overall it was the quietest it's ever been. Pre-Covid it could be so loud it was hard to hear a companion at the same table Face masks and vaccine checks at the door are mandatory which I appreciate. Finally made it here, after hearing my husband rave about it for years. We started off with the jalapeno cornbread. Perfection, topped off with some kinda sweet honey. Next, I had the okra. I didn't love it, and the aioli was lacking flavor. For my entree I had the iceberg lettuce salad with the richest blue cheese dressing. I devoured it. So damn good. My visit to Town Hall was actually a work event as we'd ended up taking several clients to dinner here. Right off the bat I realized the space was fairly crowded and laid out strangely. I would imagine it would be great for private parties as there's several separate spaces, however the restroom is on the second floor up two flights of steps or an elevator - it's honestly the farthest trek for a bathroom I've climbed. Food wise I was torn between the chicken and waffles and the cod and while I enjoyed the cod I finally decided on, I probably would not order it again. The cod itself wasn't seasoned well enough on its own and relied on the salty texture of the lentils to get by. The dish didn't sing until I mixed everything on the plate together, and while that's one school of thought for flavoring, it's not one I prefer. The service was friendly and spot on beyond the one instance of making me that person who drinks Coca Cola all evening then sends back a Diet Coke when she's served one. I absolutely hate being that person. Long story short, I would definitely come back but probably would not order the cod again. read more

We met a couple of friends at Town Hall for Dine About Town lunch. Three of us got the gumbo for appetizer. For entrée, we got the cat fish jambalaya, chicken pot pie and one entrée off the DAT menu - the oyster po' boy. Surprisingly, flavors were on the bland side except for the oyster po' boy, which was average. Y'know how some restaurants offer salt at the table? Town Hall needed that. Portions were decent; the chicken pot pie was probably enough for two! Service was a little awkward. When the hubby and I first arrived, the hostess said she couldn't seat us until everyone in the party has arrived. Then a slew of other people walked in, and she sat some without the entire party being present over the next 10 minutes. We were the only ones left waiting at in the front. I was just about to ask her when she offered to finally seat us, though we were still missing 2 in our party of 5. I don't understand why she made us stand that whole time and seated others? Food was slow to the table. It took almost 2 hours for this whole lunch. Since the hubby had to get back to the office, he took a photo for us girls before he left. After the photo, my friend Jackie was about to continue to work on her jambalaya. A bus boy came up and asked her if she was done; she told him no. Not two minutes later, the same bus boy returned again and asked to take away her dish. WTF? Parking is a bitch in this area too during weekdays lunch. Meters right in front of/close to the restaurants are not too difficult to find, but they have a 1-hour limit and costs $3.50/hour (that's a lot of quarters!). Doesn't work too well for a 2-hour lunch for sure. A close by lot on Natoma (between Fremont and 1st - less than a block away) charges $2 for the 1st hour and $8 for up to 4 hours. read more

We always pass by here when we get off Fremont and always wanted to try this place. We finally did and I do not regret it. I am a definite fan of this place. The portions are small with lots of flavors but at the end of the meal I was full. For guys, I would recommend a snack before eating here, just in case. Had the Tuna Tartar and Piquillo Peppers for appetizers which were excellent! Dinner was Seafood Etoufee (YUM) and short rib hanger steak. Dessert was butterscotch and chocolate pot de creme was very good and would be enough for 4 people as it was very rich. The place is not for kids since it has the romantic scene. The building is very old and has a musty smell to it. The bathroom was upstairs and can use the elevator or stairs. The place was clean but going to the second floor, the smell was awful!
