This is a go to dinner/happy hour spot in San Carlos for my coworkers and I. No reservations but weekday happy hour we always find a table. All the apps are really good and I know most people order one of the steaks but since I'm not supper into steak I used to get the short ribs when they had it and recently got their roast chicken which was really good. I preferred that to the meatloaf I got a different time. I got the baked potato and creamed spinich as sides and really liked those too. I've eaten at Town a lot of times but never for brunch so this is a BRUNCH review. We stopped here after a long dog hike with our fur baby. We had outdoor seating, a must with the furby. They offered all of us water, including our pup- love. They also have a doggie menu, so I was pretty sold right away and spent more time reviewing that than the human menu, LOL. I ordered the Chilaquiles and my husband got the Loco Moco. I ate half of mine and he ate the rest. I thought mine was delic and he agreed! They were both great though and he said he would order again- 5 stars. We also ordered coffee and for some reason even though it was just plain coffee it was soooo good. Where do I even begin? This place might be fine for drinks and appetizers, but our experience during my sister's birthday dinner was disappointing. The entire meal took three hours, and they were clearly overwhelmed and understaffed. The appetizers arrived before our drinks, and it was another 45 minutes before our main courses came out. One of us ordered a medium-rare steak, but it was overcooked and inedible. Our server was fantastic and apologized, assuring us that a replacement wouldn't take another 45 minutes--and to their credit, they delivered a new steak within 20 minutes. While they did make an effort to fix things, the overall experience wasn't great. With so many other dining options available, I don't think we'll be returning for a full meal here anytime soon. read more

3.5 stars for a decent brunch with wonderful service, mostly good food, and pleasing atmosphere. First thing first, our service was exceptional. Our waiter was extremely friendly, attentive, and to the point. Have nothing but praises. The rest of the experience, however, was less than stellar. The food was a hit and miss. Some dishes were pleasantly surprising but others were extremely mediocre. There wasn't anything really bad but nothing outstanding either. For example, the garlic bread was good but the benedict was just ok; the rest was more of the same. The place has been around forever so it's a bit of a staple for San Carlos; that also means the atmosphere is nice and has a steakhouse feel but it's also a bit outdated. Came here with a group of 7 for a company holiday luncheon on this past Tuesday at 11:45. The place was already jumping but we got seated quickly. It was tight in the booth but it was too cold outside for a larger table. Staff were spot on and attentive. Food was fabulous, bought three appetizers, they came out quickly and we were not rushed with entrees arriving at the table. Food was very tasty. I had the baseball Filet Steak cooked perfectly but just a little over seasoned with salt for me. I'm salt sensitive. Others would probably say it was 5/5. I've always wanted to try this upscale restaurant in Downtown San Carlos but just never got to it. That is until last week. A friend and I spontaneously decided to treat ourselves and boy am I sure glad we came here. It's been a while since I've ordered a restaurant steak preferring to buy and grill my own as of late. But with minimal convincing by my friend, I ordered the ribeye with the blue cheese crust. Oh. My. God. The steak itself was thick, juicy and tender. I thought this place was going to be one of those expensive because its steak and how it looks in here but I was wrong! The prices are well...you're at a steakhouse in San Mateo lol. My friends and I shared an array of appetizers and desserts...Town has generous portions so we all definitely left stuffed Standouts were their chicken sliders, crispy rice with ahi tuna and you definitely need to get the 7 layer chocolate cake. My 1st review of 2024, and it goes to Town! I've had Town twice in the past- once via takeout and the 2nd time was during brunch there. My sister and I want to Town for dinner this past Sunday night. We joined the waitlist and was informed of a 15mins wait. Within 7 minutes, I get a text saying that my table was ready. That was fast! We ordered the Steak Diane, NY Steak Tacos, Chicken Enchilada, a side of fries, Bread Pudding, and Sundae. Everything was delicious! Our top favorites were the Bread Pudding, Tacos, and Sundae. That Bread Pudding is bomb.com! Also, it was my sister's first time trying bread pudding, and she loved it! The service was attentive and friendly. The place has a very nice ambiance. First time here, not the last. Found it by walking from the eye care appointment. This was one of the few places open on a Saturday at 10:30am. To my surprise, it was bustling inside! Looking at the menu outside, the host came out and said, "We have brunch going on, the menu is inside. Would you like to come in?" The warm welcome was enough. We walked into a soft lit environment of full tables. We chose to sit at the bar, where morning cocktails are served, along with the full brunch menu. We opted for a michelada* and an espresso martini. (*michelada is not on their menu but I asked to replace the vodka with beer, and the bartender did!). Good food, good vibes, good music over the in-house speakers (country today), exceptional wait staff. Not our last time here. I haven't been to Town for dinner in a while. I had dinner there with a few friends on Monday night and I was shocked at how busy they are! We grabbed a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. Before the bartender could make our drinks, our table is ready! We had BBQ shrimps as appetizer - 5/5. I ordered the poke bowl which is the perfect serving size for me. I love all the veggies and sashimi. I'll ask them to put the sauce on the side next time. On this trip, we came here for Mother's Day! It was crowded, and required my husband standing in line well in advance of opening, but they were able to get a table for the rest of us to meet them there (2 hour table limit, for those wondering). We loved our server, but because of the immediate seating of so many tables, the food did take a while to arrive. But the country eggs benedict and the green eggs and ham were absolutely to die for! Our kids seemed to be a little less excited about their kids' meals - one had the french toast and maple bacon, the other the waffles. They were fine, but not nearly as good as the adult food! I come here almost every year for my birthday! It helps they give you a $25 coupon as well as free dessert. This is my favorite steakhouse in the peninsula and they live up to that every time I come. I'd say 3.5 but I will round up for being a staple in San Carlos for I don't even know how long now. Whether you just want to have some drinks at a bar where you've got a chance to strike up a conversation or you want a solid steak dinner or hankering for a can't miss brunch - Town has it all. Depending on when you come the wait can be long, so I advise reservations for dinner and come early for brunch. The location is right on Laurel Street so you're right in the hear of all the downtown San Carlos buzz and it's usually a fun crown. The food is always on point. While I've never had my favorite of anything here, I also have never not like anything so that goes a long a way. Fun for a night out with friends or to celebrate an occasion. We came on a Sunday night, and decided to try our luck with no reservations made. Luckily we were seated outside right away, and there was a heater hanging above. Heater got a little too warm after a while, but I guess it kind of kept the food warm longer. We tried 3 different kinds of steak, baseball cut fillet, New York steak and wagyu flank steak. Each dish comes with two sides. I got the brussels sprouts and garlic green beans. Brussels sprouts were crunchy with a tint of lemon taste and green beans were fresh. The New York steak should be medium but was overcooked, but they were so amazing and offered us to remake it. For dessert, we shared the brownie, it was nice and warm with a scoop of ice cream. One of my best friends lives nearby here and she said this place is always packed so we figured since we wanted something like to eat we could check out their appetizers and it was pouring this particular Saturday night so luckily there wasn't a line and we were seated as soon as we walked in. But, it is still worth it. Food quality is overall consistent and decent. Pricing is okay for pennisula standards. Wine is okay. Service is consistently attentive. We waited for about 50 min for the first available table. We were seated outdoor. Though the heater was on, I felt a bit cold. Winter is here. We had their warm Napa cabbage (sort of a staple here), their steak with green beans and fully loaded potatoes, a warm bread pudding. We had a bottle of a Cabernet. It was alright. Food was okay. My friend ordered medium well. We would appreciate a little more pink in the middle. Overall, it was a good dinner catching up with friends. Chose this spot for our double date. It was pretty crowded when we arrived but managed to snag a booth inside. The interior is pretty dim. We ordered: NY steak: our friend liked this. It looked vaguely familiar, but I figured it just looked like any number of spots in cute neighborhood downtowns up and down California. We walked in for a drink and sat on the patio, which was airy and pleasantly bustling. Service was friendly, and we enjoyed our visit. It was only once we sat down that I realized we'd been there before, per my Yelp review in 2013. That was a brunch visit, and I had a great experience. I was less charmed this time around. Town felt like the kind of small town restaurant that fills so many roles it can't possibly do them all well. The menu was enormous and all over the place. Bowls and burgers, meatloaf and enchiladas; dedicated sections for both sushi and steak. We were just there for a nightcap, and the cocktail list felt decidedly suburban, heavy on sweet drinks with tons of ingredients. Matt got a beer, the Hoptinez IPA, and I had the barrel-aged Manhattan. It is honestly hard to screw up a Manhattan, but this one was pretty bad, made with Dickel 12 whisky, Cinzano sweet vermouth, Carpano Antica vermouth, Punt e Mes, Angostura bitters, and Amarena cherries. I don't know if it was the whisky or the unnecessary layering of vermouths or what, but this tasted harsh and medicinal. Drink aside, though, this was a nice enough stop, and I did apparently like my brunch over a decade ago. We also realized while we were there that a friend had just recommended this place as a meeting spot for the following day (though we'd already decided to go elsewhere). A great place for a special occasion. The extensive menu means that there is something for everyone. We went to celebrate a birthday on a Sunday night. While they do take reservations, we were able to get seated within 15 minutes of arriving at 6pm. Our server was attentive and the food came at a good pace. We thoroughly enjoyed each of our dishes and would reorder them all again, with the exception of the meatloaf. It seems like a screaming good deal, but that's only because it doesn't taste that great. If you want something with ground beef, opt for the burger instead. Even better, get a steak. We've been here many times and always find that they do a great job with it. The only complaint- we noted that we were there to celebrate a birthday. But sadly, no one seemed to remember. Town used to be one of my favorite restaurants in the area. It was our go-to spot for date nights, visits from family, and special occasions. But after our most recent experience, my husband has no interest in returning, and I left feeling really disappointed. My in-laws were visiting from Amsterdam to spend time with us and our one-year-old son, and we decided to go to Town for lunch. Since they don't take reservations, we joined the waitlist and were told it would be about 20 minutes for the next available table. Once they realized we had a dog and would need outdoor seating, they said it could be another 10 to 15 minutes. We were fine with that. We considered going somewhere else, but when I checked the online waitlist about 20 minutes later, we were listed as first in line. I noticed we were marked as a party of five, even though it was just four adults and a high chair. There were still several other groups listed after us, so we figured we'd be seated shortly. But another 10 minutes went by and everyone else had already been seated while we were still waiting. At that point, I went in to clarify that we only needed four seats and a high chair. The host explained that they couldn't place the high chair at any of the available tables because it would block the walking path and be considered a fire hazard. I completely understood the concern, but the patio is set up in two rows of tables. One row faces the street, and the other faces the sidewalk, with a path running in between. We were not asking to place the high chair in the outer sidewalk-facing row. We simply asked to place it in the space between the two table rows, where there was still plenty of room for servers to pass through without issue. What made this even more confusing is that just a couple of weeks ago, my husband and I had dined here with our son for our wedding anniversary and were seated outside. That day, we did exactly what we were asking to do this time - placed the high chair between two tables in the middle walkway. It was not a problem at all and caused zero issues for staff or guests. No one questioned it then, it was actually offered to us, and it worked out perfectly. By this point, we had been waiting for 45 minutes, and they still couldn't give us any estimate on how much longer it would be. There was one large outdoor table that clearly would have worked, but it was still occupied by a group of three who had already paid and were just sitting and chatting. They remained there for at least 20 more minutes. That table seemed to be the only one they were willing to offer us, but there was no effort to turn it over, no suggestion to ask the guests to move to a smaller table, and no alternative options were offered. We explained again that we had a baby with us who would need to nap soon and asked if we could just place the high chair in the center walkway, like we had before. There was even an empty table across from it, so there would have been more than enough space for staff to pass through. Still, they refused, saying the servers would not have enough room, even though we knew from personal experience that wasn't the case. It all just felt unnecessarily rigid and lacking in empathy. We were not asking to bend any major rules, just hoping someone would try to help us find a solution. The lunch rush had slowed and we had been patient, but the unwillingness to accommodate a family with a small child was disheartening. We eventually left and ate elsewhere. My father-in-law was frustrated and it turned what should have been a lovely family lunch into a disappointing experience. I don't know if we were asking too much, but the whole interaction made it feel like families with babies are not particularly welcome here. After years of enjoying this place, it is hard to want to come back. read more
