The place was hopping when I got there. Bar seats are first come first serve, wait for a table was an hour or so. We found seats "at the bar" but they were next to the bar. We ordered using the scan code, no actual person to assist w our order or questions. AND, we were asked to pay and tip before we had any service. Food was served promptly. My friend got the sea bass and spinach. She was quite happy with it. I got the warm cabbage salad and onion rings. The salad was kinda room temp, not exactly warm. Definitely needed salt and pepper. I would have asked for something to add to it, if a server had checked on us. The onion rings came out cold. I brought them to the bartender who grabbed them without a word. Matt B. and I went for an after-dinner walk in San Carlos a few weeks back, and Town was by far the most happening place on Laurel at 9:30 on a Friday night. It looked vaguely familiar, but I figured it just looked like any number of spots in cute neighborhood downtowns up and down California. We walked in for a drink and sat on the patio, which was airy and pleasantly bustling. Service was friendly, and we enjoyed our visit. It was only once we sat down that I realized we'd been there before, per my Yelp review in 2013. That was a brunch visit, and I had a great experience. I was less charmed this time around. Town felt like the kind of small town restaurant that fills so many roles it can't possibly do them all well. The menu was enormous and all over the place. Bowls and burgers, meatloaf and enchiladas; dedicated sections for both sushi and steak. We were just there for a nightcap, and the cocktail list felt decidedly suburban, heavy on sweet drinks with tons of ingredients. Matt got a beer, the Hoptinez IPA, and I had the barrel-aged Manhattan. It is honestly hard to screw up a Manhattan, but this one was pretty bad, made with Dickel 12 whisky, Cinzano sweet vermouth, Carpano Antica vermouth, Punt e Mes, Angostura bitters, and Amarena cherries. I don't know if it was the whisky or the unnecessary layering of vermouths or what, but this tasted harsh and medicinal. Drink aside, though, this was a nice enough stop, and I did apparently like my brunch over a decade ago. We also realized while we were there that a friend had just recommended this place as a meeting spot for the following day (though we'd already decided to go elsewhere). Even without reservations we were able to walk in Father's Day weekend. We got there Saturday at 430 and was sitted instantly! The accordion windows were wide open and the resturant felt fresh and airy Of course started the meal with a drink and to celebrate Father's Day! My dad got the ribeye Oscar style with two sides of broccoli and I got filet with wedge salad with ranch dressing and broccoli! Can't forget the fresh horseradish! The food was amazing! The atmosphere is super clean and lively! The staff are helpful and patient when ordering while also giving good recommendations. Our dinner was delicious! The salmon tasted fresh and not too fishy. Town used to be one of my favorite restaurants in the area. It was our go-to spot for date nights, visits from family, and special occasions. But after our most recent experience, my husband has no interest in returning, and I left feeling really disappointed. My in-laws were visiting from Amsterdam to spend time with us and our one-year-old son, and we decided to go to Town for lunch. Since they don't take reservations, we joined the waitlist and were told it would be about 20 minutes for the next available table. Once they realized we had a dog and would need outdoor seating, they said it could be another 10 to 15 minutes. We were fine with that. We considered going somewhere else, but when I checked the online waitlist about 20 minutes later, we were listed as first in line. I noticed we were marked as a party of five, even though it was just four adults and a high chair. There were still several other groups listed after us, so we figured we'd be seated shortly. But another 10 minutes went by and everyone else had already been seated while we were still waiting. At that point, I went in to clarify that we only needed four seats and a high chair. The host explained that they couldn't place the high chair at any of the available tables because it would block the walking path and be considered a fire hazard. I completely understood the concern, but the patio is set up in two rows of tables. One row faces the street, and the other faces the sidewalk, with a path running in between. We were not asking to place the high chair in the outer sidewalk-facing row. We simply asked to place it in the space between the two table rows, where there was still plenty of room for servers to pass through without issue. What made this even more confusing is that just a couple of weeks ago, my husband and I had dined here with our son for our wedding anniversary and were seated outside. That day, we did exactly what we were asking to do this time - placed the high chair between two tables in the middle walkway. It was not a problem at all and caused zero issues for staff or guests. No one questioned it then, it was actually offered to us, and it worked out perfectly. By this point, we had been waiting for 45 minutes, and they still couldn't give us any estimate on how much longer it would be. There was one large outdoor table that clearly would have worked, but it was still occupied by a group of three who had already paid and were just sitting and chatting. They remained there for at least 20 more minutes. That table seemed to be the only one they were willing to offer us, but there was no effort to turn it over, no suggestion to ask the guests to move to a smaller table, and no alternative options were offered. We explained again that we had a baby with us who would need to nap soon and asked if we could just place the high chair in the center walkway, like we had before. There was even an empty table across from it, so there would have been more than enough space for staff to pass through. Still, they refused, saying the servers would not have enough room, even though we knew from personal experience that wasn't the case. It all just felt unnecessarily rigid and lacking in empathy. We were not asking to bend any major rules, just hoping someone would try to help us find a solution. The lunch rush had slowed and we had been patient, but the unwillingness to accommodate a family with a small child was disheartening. We eventually left and ate elsewhere. My father-in-law was frustrated and it turned what should have been a lovely family lunch into a disappointing experience. I don't know if we were asking too much, but the whole interaction made it feel like families with babies are not particularly welcome here. I visited Town in the historic Tivoli building and really loved the vibe--high ceilings, warm lighting, and a laid-back energy that makes it perfect for a relaxed night out. I went with the Filet Smash Burger and fries. The burger was cooked well but pretty one-dimensional in flavor, and the fries started off crisp before getting soggy. The portion sizes felt a bit small for what you get, so it ends up feeling like you're paying more than you really should for the meal. All in all, great atmosphere but the food and portions could use a little boost to match the setting. read more

It has been a few years since I last came to Town and thought an update was in order. It is mostly street parking around the restaurant, and we were quite lucky to find a street spot only a block over from the restaurant. The restaurant has the classic steakhouse feel with dim lighting and leather seats. Food: We started with the cheesy garlic bread. The bread was good, but it was only warm on top with the cheese. The bread was not toasted below. I ordered the Super Bowl for my entree, and it was good! I would order it again, but I would have liked more salsa or hot sauce with it. I also tried the mashed potatoes and the mac & cheese. Both sides were good. I enjoyed the mashed potatoes more. The mac & cheese had a hint of sweetness to it. For dessert, we ordered the bread pudding and the butter cake. The bread pudding came out hot, and was as good as I remember. The butter cake was a good cake, but I don't know if it's really butter cake as it didn't have the soft top to it. The ice cream it came with was good. Service: Town no longer takes reservations and is first-come, first-serve. We got the restaurant on a Saturday at 5pm. It was early enough to be seated right away. Our server was nice. Ok Town .... used to be our favorite restaurant, I like the hustle bustle feeling of it, I mean We have to drive 30 minutes to get to the restaurant and willing to wait close to an hour to be sitting sometimes so that say a lot. Second before last time we were there food and services wasn't at its best but we decided to give it one more chance... few days ago we stopped by for late lunch/ early dinner, sat down, waiter came asked to take order for food ??? Not ones he offer drink , not appetizer or some sorts of that. Feel like he doesn't like to walk too much or something but yet when the bill comes, it's ask to leave at least 18% tips? Come on now ....Food came out cold and tasted like it just slap on the plates, no love no presentation ... my bread got so soggy in the shrimp sauce by the time it in front of me.... Came here for my son's birthday. They had the street blocked off and there was a nice dining area outside. In fact, there were more people dining outside than in. No reservations, so when we checked in the nice hostess offered an inside table right away or a 20-minute wait for outside. Took the inside table. We want to try the unique items on the Asian fusion menu. Philly cheesesteak spring rolls - 3* I love Philly cheesesteak and spring rolls but this combination was too weird for me. Teriyaki skirt steak - 4* Reminded me of Korean kal bi. Very good. Bone in Rib Eye - 4* Very good. Big and perfectly cooked Baseball cut Filet Mignon - 4* Very tender, perfectly cooked Wagyu flank steak - 3* Not gonna lie, a little underwhelming Sides (garlic mashed and macaroni and cheese 4* For the dudes, there's TV above the urinal in the Men's restroom. Great for when a game in on. The service and ambiance were outstanding. Prices are OK. Some of the food was very good, but a few dishes were just OK. To be honestttttt....the food was hit or miss depending on the dish, but I will give credit for great service. My group ordered a few different items. The chicken & waffles and San Carlos Joe's scramble were misses for us. However, the country eggs benedict and chilaquiles did get good reviews from my group! They do have LOTS of options on their menu, so don't be discouraged by my review. I think their other items might just be better, but at the price point it's at, I would've hoped for more consistency. There was no wait on a Saturday night at 6:00pm which was great! There is a big parking lot behind the restaurant so it was easy to find parking. They have both indoor and outdoor seating - the outdoor seating was perfect on a warm summer day. For starters we had the New York Steak Tacos and the New Orleans BBQ shrimp - both were delicious. The dungeness crab on top of the steak, creamed spinach and mashed potatoes were amazing. We both had ordered our steak medium rare and they came back over cooked. Once we got the steaks back they were on the chewier side. My wagyu flank steak was lacking in flavor, the New York steak had a bit more flavor but was still pretty chewy. Our server had a poor attitude - she never smiled, she was not hospitable and overall just had a sour face and demeanor and the negative energy was almost enough for us to ask for another server. I tried their steak and a couple small plates, and while it was cooked properly, it lacked the depth or flavor you'd expect at this price point. Service was decent, and the space feels polished, but you're paying premium prices for very average plates. Not bad, just not worth the hype, or the bill. We came in for dinner and drinks on Thursday around 530 and luckily there was no wait! Town doesn't take reservations btw parking can also be fairly tricky here because this area is so busy! You have an option to sit inside or outside. We chose inside and ordered a variety of small plates, entrees and drinks. Big fan of their wine list and cocktails the sparkling peach martini is very sweet but so good! As for apps I was fan of their California roll and the steak tacos which could really just be a whole meal. I also ordered the wagyu strip steak with green beans (very Al dente) and mashed potatoes (amaze). The steam was perfectly cooked but the Demi glacé was a little sweet for me. I've walked by Town several times and noted how packed it was even on weekdays! So I wanted to try it out! My husband and I went for dinner on a Monday. The service is great. Their menu is quite big but sadly lacks vegetarian options for the main course. It only has 1 pasta in the mains section, so if you dont want pasta, you have to make do with appetizers/sides. Many of the sides are vegetarian, but it's sort of weird to order a couple of appetizers or sides as your dinner when the people you're with are ordering steak or salmon. And a salad as your main course is just not satisfying for a lot of people, including me. I got the vegetable roll (sushi) and a side of roasted garlic mashed potatoes. Both were great, especially the sushi roll, which had delicious sauces and a nice crunch! But the quantity was insufficient for me even though I have a pretty small appetite. So I probably could have ordered another side (if I had known the portion sizes). read more

I have been here a couple of times and I have been amazed at how great everything is about this place. Ambiance and decor set the tone for an amazing experience. The hostess starts it off with her welcoming smile and greetings. The service staff is right on it to welcome us to the table, pass out the menus and take drink orders as soon as we settle in to the booth. The specials are presented and then we are left alone for a little while to ponder our choices. We placed our orders and within a few minutes the appetizers are coming out. Then as soon as the small plates are cleared, the main entries start coming out. Amazing service. The food is amazing and we have never been disappointed. We get up to the area at least once a month and this is becoming our "go to " place. Highly recommend it. read more

Glad we found this gem. The place was cozy, lively, and packed. No reservations, but service was efficient and friendly once our party was seated. The waygu ribeye with bleu cheese crust was delicious. This is saying alot because I normally avoid bleu cheese like the plague. Glad I gave it a chance here. Been hearing about this place for a while. My sister frequents it. Had a great time, server Noie (spelling may not be correct) was awesome, friendly, helpful and attentive. Host staff/greeters were welcoming and assisted and seated us quickly. Food was good especially the bbq shrimp and the garlic bread (the best ever). I will certainly come back and I do recommend. I've been here a few times in the past and have had good experiences. The food was not as wonderful as I had remembered. I got the beet and burrada appetizer which was tasty but nothing noteworthy. For the main course, I had the New York Steak, but was also tasty but a little under seasoned. I really enjoyed the Brussels sprouts though, I thought those were delicious. We took my daughter/son-in-law for an early dinner today. We were seated right away. The restaurant was fairly busy. Carlos was our server. He was very attentive. We ordered two appetizers: New Orleans Bbq shrimp and the Huli Huli sushi roll. Both appetizers were delicious. Everyone liked their entrees. I had the teriyaki skirt steak. The meat was cooked properly, green beans were al dente, and the mash potatoes were...well mash potatoes. Hard to screw potatoes up. My wife liked the seared Ahi, and my daughter said the sea bass was fresh and tasty but the dashi liquid underneath the fish was fishy. My son in law had the French dip. He loved it. The fries that came with his sandwich were outstanding. Dessert? Heck yeah! Towns bread pudding sets the bar for bread pudding. The buttery sauce and the very moist bread pudding has to be their best dessert. I've been coming to Town for about 10 years. It is consistently a delicious meal every time I eat here. read more
