BE AWARE: Toyota of Berkeley's I-80 Junction service center charges an additional 3% fee if you don't pay in cash. This was not disclosed when I dropped off my car. I only discovered it when I arrived to pick it up... after the work was already completed. At that point, I had no real choice. They had my car, I'd arrived via Uber, and there was no practical way to go withdraw $800 cash from the ATM at that time of day even if I could get to one. I was effectively stuck. The repair itself (replacing an oxygen sensor) cost about $800, which already felt high. A quick Google check shows the typical range is $300-$600. The part itself costs about $200 for the genuine Toyota part and my statement says that they took 1.5 hours to complete the work so labor accounts for the remaining $600 of cost which means I paid $400/hour here. On top of that, I was charged another 3% simply for paying by card. For those doing the math, it's true, $25 more isn't a fortune. But the issue is the lack of transparency and the feeling of being squeezed for every dime with no way out. Fees like this should be clearly disclosed upfront, verbally and prior to the work being done... not quietly added when the customer no longer has options. To make matters worse, the repair took three days, despite being promised it would be completed in one. I'm sharing this so others can make an informed decision. There are many reputable Toyota mechanics in the Bay Area who do quality work without surprise fees, and keeping your car for 3 days for 1.5 hours of work. Since moving back to the Bay Area, I've taken my car here for every service. I have an affinity for Toyota of Berkeley because I bought my first new-ish car from them a decade ago and they were attentive to customer service and maintained integrity throughout. For all the excellence, I've only had two issues one of which is already moot but including it in case you also experienced it but haven't returned yet (it's safe now! ). Last year, there was a guy who always tried to aggressively upsell who I had to check because I don't play that game (see mechanic post from LA). I get the need for increasing revenue if the service dept is struggling, but that's not how you build and retain a customer base. He did change for the better, but it seems he's no longer there. The new AI phone system needs work. What used to be a 1 minute phone call turned to 3 mins of back and forth and ended with me just hanging up. The service manager called back which was nice but the process is extraneous. No star dings because I applaud the adoption of new tech even when implementation is a work in progress. Overall, I really love this place. The staff is friendly and I see the attention to detail in their customer service. I also noticed they also have soft serve ice cream now too Raise me a small cafe or soundproof phone booths with relatively secure WiFi and I might just go all in and work from there during services. read more

My husband brought his Toyota Tacoma in for its 35,000 mile service check up. He also needed to get a window repaired. Right from the start, he was pushed to spend more money on extra services which he refused. All he wanted was the window repaired and the 35,000 mile checkup. This was not the first time that pressure had been put on him. Another time he was encouraged to get a "precautionary alignment" though the tires were wearing evenly. Anyway, 36 hours later, (!) when he went to pick up the truck, only the window was repaired but the 35,000 mile service wasn't done. He was rudely told that he had refused it, which was not true. He had only refused the extra services. Now we have to take the truck to somewhere else and waste more time. We will never go back to this place! read more

Buying parts in person means expecting a 70-100% markup over MSRP. For example, pink coolant (00272-SLLC2) has an MSRP of $28, with some local dealers discounting it to $20-22. Toyota of Berkeley charges $48 and they don't price-match other dealers. It's frustrating since I live so close, I'd otherwise do all my business there if they competed fairly on price. read more

Service so bad, I sold my Toyota because of it. I had been taking my Toyota here for service for years. Service here used to be great but it had been slipping in recent years. My last experience there was the last straw for me. I tried to take my vehicle here for service. Their AI customer service representative booked me, then shortly after that I received a notification that my appointment was automatically canceled. The service center called me to rebook my appointment and said the service would take one day. After three days, the vehicle still wasn't done, but I needed a car. But instead of offering a loaner, they just gave me my car back unserviced. A few days later, I brought the vehicle back in to finish service, they didn't offer a loaner, and they never gave me updates. Finally I called them after 4 days or so and they said it was done, only to find that the only did 2 of the 3 things I'd asked them to. They also added the new credit card fee which other Toyota dealerships in the area don't have. I literally sold my Toyota and bought a different brand because of this service center. read more

I found my truck at Toyota of Berkeley, but the purchase experience was one of the worst I've had with any dealership. 1. My appointment was rescheduled with less than an hour's notice. A small inconvenience, but it set the wrong tone for what followed. 2. The truck had visible issues that were not disclosed upfront (before I flew in from San Diego): a windshield chip, a passenger mirror that did not sit flush, and dirty door weather stripping. Even after I asked for these items to be addressed once I agreed to purchase, nothing was done. I also requested a price adjustment to reflect these issues and was refused. 3. The rear passenger reverse light was out. This supposedly "passed inspection." When I brought it up, the salesperson told me that I could drive it to a shop down the street. I pushed back and asked for money off instead. After wasting another 20 minutes, they suddenly had someone next door in the service department who can replace the light bulb. Really? And they wanted to send me off to a different location and waste more time? 4. Although I agreed to purchase within the first hour, I was kept at the dealership for nearly six hours due to delays and inefficiency. My time did not feel valued. The majority of my time was spent waiting around. 5. The finance process was unprofessional on multiple levels. The representative was dressed as if she were going to a nightclub rather than conducting serious financial business. When I asked about MSRP, she admitted she didn't know what the term was and dismissed me with, "you already agreed to this price" -- even though no paperwork had yet been signed. The lack of professionalism was distasteful. 6. Major Safety Concerns - a.) The most troubling issues came after the sale. While driving the truck home to San Diego, I noticed abnormal braking at highway speeds. Upon reviewing the inspection paperwork more carefully, I realized the brake check had already failed for "pulsation" -- something the dealership knew about but never mentioned or repaired. b.) On top of that, I later discovered the tires were nearly 10 years old. While I knew they were the originals, I didn't realize until doing my own research that tires of that age pose a serious safety hazard regardless of tread. Selling a vehicle in this condition is unacceptable and shows a complete disregard for customer safety. Frankly, I'm just grateful I made it home safely. In the end, I did get the truck I wanted -- but I now have to invest in new tires and a brake system check/repair, which means more added costs. After this experience, I would never recommend Toyota of Berkeley to anyone. The process was slow, unprofessional, and careless, with little regard for honesty, integrity, safety, or customer experience. P.S. I told the salesperson in the beginning that I wanted to name the truck after him -- it's a tradition of mine. But after everything, I changed my mind. His name is Frankie now. read more

I popped in to see what used car options were available. Lucas greeted me at the entrance and was so gracious, knowledgeable, and helpful. I barely knew what I wanted and wasn't even sure if I wanted to buy a car. He brought me to his computer to show me the options and we worked together to narrow it down to a 2016 Prius Two Eco with 25,000 miles. Reliable. Reasonable. According to Google and my battery expert friend, a good deal. I asked what they would give me for my trade in. Lucas inspected and test drove it. It was pretty dirty but Lucas didn't make me feel self conscious about it. I feel like I got a reasonable offer. The process took a couple hours from walking in to picking a car to getting my old car evaluated to getting financing and out the door. I'm very happy with my experience. Can't comment on the service center but don't waste your time selling a car to them. I accurately filled out the KBB form to sell my car and shortly after received an enthusiastic call from Toyota of Albany Service Center to bring in my old 2007 Honda Fit with stick shift. An old car with pretty low gas mileage for 17 years (around 124,000), needing new front tires, faded paint with some scratches, plastic arm rest needing to be replaced or glued back on etc, not a looker (all detailed in the form).... New clutch installed and mechanically in great shape. single owner, no accidents, clean title. Could go another 150,000 miles. KBB offer $2240. Yeah, not much but the car is 17 years old so I was o.k. with that. They test drove it and said the check engine light blinked a few times. Doesn't come on when I drive it. Assume they shifted gears too soon or flooded the engine or something. I wasn't in the car for the test drive so who knows what they did? Then was told it needed new front tires (just like I said it did in the KBB form that they read and called me from). Told me they could only offer a offer (like 700 or 800 dollars). :) Seems like the idea is to get people and see if they can totally low ball it. The idea with the KBB price is if you accurately describe the car and the dealer calls you in they are supposed to honor the price if it matches the description which this car did. I left and went to another dealer who called me based on the EXACT same KBB form. They checked it out (a mechanic who used to own a Honda Fit) and told me people usually aren't that accurate about the description of the car but I was. Unfortunately, my latest experience at this service department was subpar. The service tech did not let me know that my vehicle was ready, meaning my car was ready to go for about one hour while I was just sitting in the lobby. They should have been in communication so I could have been ready to go and not waste my time, in addition to that when I call to make the appointment they promised that my car was going to be ready in 1.5 and it was about 4 hours, you don't own my time, if you can't keep your promises don't take customers. read more

STAY AWAY from this place if you are looking for a honest & trustworthy Toyota service place This place changed my perception of what is trustworthy in car service business. This place is near my home, so convenient to get the service done. I took my zero-issue 2020 Prius Prime, at 30K mil for regular maintenance. As I was busy with a conference meeting, I was off guard for the details shown to me. Agent highly recommended a list of things to be done as it has been more than 2 years since the last service (last service was ~10K miles). The price for the total service for 2020 Prius prime with 30K mile shown to be $1674 !! Even though I never paid this much for any car service and the number definatelly took me by surprise, but without really doubting the intention of the agent and dealership, I agreed. But after the service, I went home and checked my maintenance guide for 30K miles and shocked to read most of the recommended service was routine stuff. Essentially, the agent and dealership showed an extreme greediness and rip me off totally. with $1149 labour costs and $467 for parts, I realized they bundled a bunch of unnecessary stuff (not recommended by Toyota) and took my hard earned money. I am feeling terrible about this. I mean, why would anyone do this to their own customers? Not sure how this agent or the people who work at this dealership sleep at night by ripping off their regular/naive customer. Please stay away from this place. read more

The break light, ABS light, and more lights are on. I did ask what happened, and these lights were off when I did bring in the car. They want me to pay $260 to turn off those lights now. When I went to the dealership to have it programmed, I signed a bid for $260. I assumed that was the transponder and programming. The work took less than half an hour and my bill was $475. I've been coming here because I had bought the Toyota care plus package and this dealership was closer than Concord. Today I had such a bad experience I won't be continuing my oil changes here. I was told my Toyota Care Plus had ended, even though I received no notice, phone call or email notifying me. That's not the dealers fault but they were willing to give my car an oil change for free. I dropped off my car at 8:55am. I called at 1:40 to check on my ETA and was told the person servicing my car would call me in 30 minutes once he got back from lunch. An hour passes so I call and let the phone ring for about 30 times before it's picked up. I asked again what my ETA was and the receptionist transferred me to the service desk to where no one answered so I left a voicemail. Another hour passes so this time I call and explain that I'm coming to pick up my car because now it's been nearly 8 hours just to do an oil change. The receptionist says they'll let the service desk know I'm coming. I arrive and the service desk has no idea I was even on the way and apparently my car was STILL in queue to be done!! 8 hours and nothing? At least if I had gotten a call they were overbooked or busy I could have decided to take my car elsewhere. A part of me thinks they put my car last since the oil change was going to be comped. I've dropped off my car multiple times and have NEVER waited this long at this location. Then I asked how many cars did they service before mine and whether they went in order. I got attitude and was told they were just "really busy". It's hard to believe they went in order when my car had 8 hours to get a 30 minute oil change done and it STILL hadn't even been started at 4:45 pm. Honestly if they had just communicated they overbooked I would have left but instead I wasted a whole day without my car. Now I'm glad my Toyota Care Plus expired so I can take it somewhere else. read more

With my first appointment with a sales rep being a complete joke (the guy knew I was coming and left before I even arrived even though I drove 30miles to see a car with him) I really didn't wanna come back. They had I car I was Interested in so I gave it another shot. The sales rep that helped me was Deliah (I don't think that's how you spell it but you get it) and she was awesome. Very down to earth and calm, not pushy. She helped me and my husband navigate the car buying dance you do when you negotiate terms and $. She knew what she was talking about, was helpful, and made us happy when it came down to negotiating terms. I was visiting Berkeley when we purchased our "gold certified" car, and on the way home my car started to shake. I was told to just go ahead and take it to the location nearest me and get it looked at and they would pay for what needs to be done. Modesto Toyota said I needed the car aligned and four new wheels. Rudy paid for my alignment but told me I had to go back to Berkeley for them to decide whether or not I actually need 4 new wheels. He said he would get back to me in two days and took almost 3 weeks. When I spoke to Delilah, she told me that the person Rudy was waiting on is Martin or Jason. I eventually called Jason who told me that the person who makes the decisions is Rudy. It felt like I was going in a full circle, phone call after phone call. Jason also felt he needed to inform me that 1. "Calling around in circles isn't going to get me anywhere" even though I was being SENT in circles & 2. that the person who owned the car before me is someone that they know, and that he knows that they came in regularly for all of their maintenance and that they "take really good care of their car" so it wasn't likely to need new wheels. I'm sorry, but the bent wheels, the paint chips and the literal HOLE in the driver side floor (that I found only after removing the "only to be removed by dealership" sticker under the floor mat) SAYS OTHERWISE. By the way, I verbally asked numerous times before purchase if we were able to bring the car back if any issues came up and we were told yes all three times. After purchase, I asked about returning it and Rudy explained to me that I waved the guarantee. I told them I don't have a copy of that in the contract and would like to see where we signed off on that. I had asked for a copy of our contract and it took almost 3 weeks and after numerous calls, they sent in our contract which does state by California law that we had a two day cancellation option for used vehicles that are under a 40k purchase price. At this point it's too late, so I took it back to Berkeley so they could determine if I needed new wheels which they agreed that I did. When I arrive to pick up the vehicle, they informed me that they fixed it by "bending the wheels back" instead of putting on new wheels. I gave it some time but started to question the integrity of my wheels which they now won't agree to replace unless I go back down there so they can check it out first. Which would mean me driving down there AGAIN after they order the wheels and probably AGAIN to pick it up. That's a three hour drive for me and gas coming out of my pocket for something that shouldn't have been wrong with my "gold certified vehicle" in the first place. I finally agreed I would just go down there but they haven't gotten back to me since Nov 26, 2024. This entire experience has been horrible. By the way, every single time I mention this location at my Modesto dealership, they legitimately say "I don't trust the Berkeley location." STAY AWAY FROM THIS LOCATION! read more

I decided to stop in to see if I could get an appointment and Albert promptly scheduled an appointment for the following day . I arrived timely the next morning (today) and received great and prompt service. Part two: Back when I purchased my car, the sales manager, promised me a full detail, but due to my poor health, I couldn't get back to get the (detail) service. When I mentioned that to Big Al, he said just tell sales. I went over and spoke to Jas Singh, he immediately took care of me . And, get this , the same day. I brought my Toyota in to the Toyota of Berkeley's I-80 Junction location in Albany a few times while I was living in California. The workers were very knowledgable and friendly and helped me find workable solutions to some of the not so major problems with my car. One example is that my radio was having static with occasional bursts of sound making it through, but not working for the most part. It came across as a connectivity/wiring issue and so I brought this up with the mechanic working on my car. He took a look and it turns out one of my silicon wafers had broken and he recommended taping it back together, which I did. Simple fix that required only minor effort on my end. My car ran smoothly after each time I brought it in. Additional work on the car above what was needed at the time of the visit was not pushed. Living in Albany, this was a fabulous location to bring my car. Easy to find and access and make an appointment. read more

Took my car in for a routine maintenance and inspection back in May. I had experienced some A/C issues prior and figured they'd pick it up during their multi-point inspection. Long story short, it turned into a brake pad replacement on top of it, and oil change that ended up being around $800 dollars. I'm driving my car and noticed that the A/C still isn't working correctly. Reading up on the issue, I have good reason to believe it's the air exchange door jamming up or not working properly. I bring my car into today and they quote me 200 dollars just to check it out. Then they call me 5 hours later to tell me Freon has leaked all over the engine (great work catching that during your multi-point "inspection") and they'll need to clean it up and replace the Freon. Blink of an eye cost has doubled to $400.00. We've asked them to call us before any work is performed, but that didn't happen. Look up previous reviews, this place has a reputation for upselling. Just an oil change? No, you need to replace everything in your car. Do not go here. I've had enough. Period. Update: spoke to manager, seeing what they can do. read more
