Since my father was Italian....We are very picky about our Italian food... there are only a handful of Italian restaurants in L.A. that boast an all authentic Italian cuisine. Just found out that Tra di Noi is a part of that select group. First, the service... we were attended by three different people, all attentive to any of our needs. All very nice. Been to Tra Di Noi a handful a times and i make the 1 hr drive from Hacienda Heights to Malibu specifically for this restaurant. Every time I come I am greeted by the hostess and the owner is such a pleasant gentlemen to interact with. I have a tendency to order the same thing every time: the carbonara! My wife always gets the seafood pasta with some type of wine sauce and she LOVES it. For the appetizer, the calamari is to die for. At times, they have specials that are off menu and those are great. If you ever have a chance to stop by, make sure you ask for the specials, as those tends to change. They have an extensive wine menu, so ask your waiter for wine pairing. 5/5 stars. It's a pleasure to eat at Tra di Noi! My family and I love the restaurant's pleasant atmosphere. As you step in, Tenaya always welcomes you with a sweet and kind smile. Each time I've eaten at Tra di Noi, I've come out very happy. Everyone who works there makes me feel like family. As soon as I'm seated, Hector always serves us water with a great smile. Luis is an excellent waiter! He's funny, attentive, and goes above and beyond to make our experience enjoyable. He always mentions the specials and checks on our table frequently. When Luis greets my family, he reminds us to relax and enjoy the beautiful day by the ocean. By the end of the dinner, you feel like you have spent quality time with a friend. We've also had the pleasure to have Tony as our waiter. He's witty and makes us feel at home while dining. When he brings the dessert tray, you want to order one of each. Tony does a great job explaining the fun details of each dessert. As for the entrées, the spaghetti al filetto di pomodoro is likely the best in all of LA! Quality of the food was borderline unacceptable and an edible for pizza was soggy and the cheese was very chewy. The eggplant Parmesan the vegetables weren't cooked and was crunchy when you ate it. When the check came after asking for if three separate times over a 25 minutes span we just wrote under the tip section cook better food. We ordered at the outside window. My friend and I shared the number 23 Prosciutto sandwich on a Saturday for lunch, which came with a salad on the side. The salad had some kind of oil based dressing and was very enjoyable. The pieces were perfectly bite sized which mattered a lot to my friend since her mouth is on the smaller side. The sandwich itself had interesting bread. It was soft on the outside but had a nice crunchy interior, something I never thought I'd experience. The fillings are rather light with no flavors really overpowering the other, balanced I'd say. The mozzarella was delicious and there was a good amount of prosciutto inside the sandwich. The tomatoes were good too. It was $19.25 for this sandwich in Malibu. I wish it had been bigger for the price that we paid. My go-to sandwich spot back in my hometown has sandwiches for a lot cheaper and they taste just as good if not better. But I guess the beachside location marks up the price. Something that stuck out to me was the wooden knives, but they lowkey lacked functionality due to their small size. It was amusing to see though. I have passed by this place many times over the years but never tried it until today. We were having an outing with my tourist cousins and stopped by Malibu Village to eat at the Malibu Kitchen only to find out that they are out of business. I decided we eat at Tra di Noi. We were seated within a few minutes. We asked for tap water and it tasted horrible. Just horrible chlorine water. The fusilli pasta with chicken was way too salty for me but the pizzas we got were good. We ordered a bread of basket that comes with olive tapenade and loved it. I have mixed feelings about this place, did I like it or not? Will I come back or not? Was it worth the $$?The place is a bit old and unappealing, the spot we were seating had a sewer smell from time to time and it's located next to a playground. I did see that they have a to go food window on the side , with a menu that offers sandwiches, pizza, pasta and salads. I might try that next time and update my review. The sandwiches looked good on their Yelp page. You can easily grab food to go and sit at one of the picnic tables nearby and enjoy without paying extra 22% gratuity that gets added to your bill. The last time I was here was probably 5-6 years ago and I remembered it being delicious -- it did not disappoint! The bread assortment was good, not great, but still quite good. We also ordered the arugula salad with Parmesan and artichokes, eggplant parm appetizer, prosciutto pizza as an app, lasagna, and orecchiette with shaved truffles. Out of everything we ordered our favorites by far were the arugula salad and truffle pasta. The salad seems simple, but it is the perfect blend of acidity, salt, and fat from the parm. The pasta was delicious. It contains peas, which is an extremely underused vegetable. They were fresh and delicious. The truffle was shaved table-side. Overall, the dish was divine. The eggplant parm appetizer was honestly just okay. I would skip it next time. The pizza was very good. The ratio of the arugula, prosciutto, and mozzarella was perfect. The lasagna was delicious as well. I think Italian restaurants sometimes have the tendency to just slap a point of lasagna on your plate when you order the dish, but that wasn't the case here. Overall, the service was quite good as well. Nothing super exceptional on the hospitality front. I love this gem in Malibu Country Mart. Loved this place when I lived in Malibu in 2004 and still holds true in 2021. I guess you could say it's always been "covid friendly" b/c they offer plenty of outdoor seating with heat lamps and now socially distanced as well. The servers are friendly and welcoming. If you like fresh made pastas you can't go wrong. My friend and I both decided to get the Ravioli Rosa - housemade pasta stuffed with spinach and ricotta cheese, blanketed in a beautiful pink sauce. To. Die. For! The side dishes all sounded good and there were so many to choose from. We opted for the rapini which was simple yet cooked and seasoned to perfection - olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. The bitterness of the greens paired nicely with the ravioli. We also started with a salad of shaved artichokes and arugula tossed with a lemon dressing. Oh and they bring warm bread/rolls to the table with a little olive spread to start. Wow. Just writing this is getting me excited. I can still taste that meal. It was actually such a fantastic meal that 2 days later I took another friend here and we ordered the same exact meal. Been here so many times at this point and every time is an absolute pleasure the food is amazing (they make their own pasta) the patio is a dream (my kids play on playground as soon as they finish eating and I can keep and eye on them and relax) the staff is great and don't mind when I show up w 4 kids and make a mess. It breaks my heart to give Tra di Noi a one-star, as I thought it was a nice and swanky place to dine out at Malibu Village. However, my experience yesterday was a major letdown. I first noticed this restaurant last year when I took my Dad to Malibu Village for his birthday. We did not dine there but just passed the place on the way to the parking lot behind the building. Fast-forward to yesterday, 4/22/23, my boyfriend and I made a reservation to dine at Tra di Noi to celebrate our first-year anniversary. Seating us was no problem; the hostess was nice and prompt. It was not until our waiter finally came to serve us and the following happened: 1. My boyfriend's napkin fell on the ground, and the waiter picked it up and gave it to him. The napkin became unsanitary after it fell on the ground, and remember that it is also used to wipe our mouths. The waiter should have provided my boyfriend with a new and clean napkin. 2. Our waiter specifically asked us, "Would you like some bread?" We said "yes" right away, thinking their bread was complimentary as with other restaurants like Cheesecake Factory or Vincenzo's Italian restaurant in West Covina. We did not realize that the bread basket was not complimentary until we received our bill. They charged us $6 for the bread basket. The charge took us aback. I verified this with our waiter. He said the bread basket used to be free, but then they started charging customers. Putting a price on the bread was not an issue; I wish they were more honest about it. I'd hate to educate workers on how to communicate better because management must train their workers properly. But if I ever have to teach them to improve their communication skills, I would have suggested that the waiter say: "Would you like to add bread to your order for $6?" It would then be clearer to us that the bread is not complimentary, and we would have been given the choice to order it or not. 3. We waited for our orders for about 30 minutes. Our waiter did not check to see how we were doing or give us updates on the status of our orders. We also noticed that the pair who came sometime after us were served their food first. It was very disappointing. Please consider my points above as continuous improvement for your staff. We understand that you may be struggling. However, seeing a restaurant such as Tra di Noi seem classy and swanky on the surface, but quite the opposite on the inside is very sad. I will not say anything about the food and the price, as with other Yelp reviewers, because the food was good, in our opinion, and it is no secret that prices have gone up across the board. I told the waiter about it and I don't know if it was the manager or owner that came and spoke to me but he suggested that I not put Parmesan cheese on seafood because the parmesan cheese is strong and makes the seafood tasted different. REALLY???!! I proceeded to tell him that no the scallops are bad because I know what they are suppose to taste like. I am a cook and always put parmesan cheese on my seafood and I always cook fresh scallops of the highest quality but he would not hear it. Found this place by accident as we were exploring Malibu. Menu had a nice variety so we decided to give it a go. Sat outside on the umbrella covered patio. Very nice. Ordered caprese, lasagna, margherita pizza and bread. The server has been great. Had to ask for water refills which is not a big deal. Food was amazing.
