We had a mixed experience at the Trading Post Smokehouse. It seemed like they needed more help as we waited about 10 minutes at the ordering window for the main person, a man, to acknowledge our presence and take our order. Others have mentioned the unfriendliness and poor service and this was also our experience overall. We opted for the family pack, which I thought allowed for some customization, but discovered that the $35 choice with two sides had to be the pulled pork. You do get a ton of pulled pork and generous portions of BBQ sauce with it, so it was kind of nice to have leftovers. On the other hand, the meat itself was just ok and we wished we had opted for the ribs or something else (and just not done the family pack which, outside of the quantity element, did not really seem worth it based on the prices of other meats). The baked beans were very sweet as it seemed like they added way too much sugar to them; same for the BBQ sauce. Highlight was probably the creamy mashed potatoes which tasted very good. The man acted surprised when I asked for silverware because we had ordered to-go and it must be outside the ordinary for a restaurant doing to-go to offer this? He also wasn't very friendly in telling us that none of our food (family pack) included drinks. Seating is available but somewhat limited (especially on the inside). Overall this wasn't great and I probably would not come back to this establishment without some changes or improvements. read more

I went to this barbecue restaurant and after eating outdoors at a picnic table, I asked to use their restroom. They told me they did not have any public restrooms and that I was not allowed to use their facilities. Even though this is a walk up window, they still provide a covered indoor cubicle tables and outdoor seating for customers so from what I understand, they're supposed to allow public restroom usage for paying customers. Hey we liked this BBQ place and were grateful to have such a nice choice in the mountains. Cute set up, with covered area to order (no standing in the rain), some inside seating and outside seating. We were standing in the rain outside to order and asked about sides with our sandwich...( the owner) who was taking our order told us to read the sign!! We stopped by several times the week of July 4th. We visited the first time on the weekend in which Marvin had a very friendly friend helping him out at the window. He told us about local potters and got us our family Pack of pulled pork with green beans and potato salad and some sweet tea. The pork was really good and the sides were fair. We went a second time and got Beef Plate with coleslaw and collards. Again the meet is great and the sides are fair. The second time we met Marvin who has had several medical issues along with his wife. We were kind and he was kind in return. We will be back when in the area. RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL Save yourself the time and eat somewhere else. I went with a group of friends and the owner treated us so bad that we decided not to eat there at all. My friends and I were so polite and respectful that we don't understand why we got that treatment. I read another review where a guy said there was spit on his food, now I don't doubt it. He seemed like the kind of guy who would do exactly that to your food if he didn't like you. It's a shame that people with no customer service skills runs a place and treats people in the way he treated us. Well you should know that every customer counts and it doesn't cost much to be kind. We like to get their delicious smoked proteins to take home and enjoy with our own sides and comforts. The first time we tried we made mistake of getting the sides that seemed like had been microwaved in their styrofoam containers. Harmful to the health and not tasty either. Trading Post Smokehouse is situated atop Lookout Mountain, not far from Cloudland Canyon State Park, the Lula Lake Land Trust and the Cloudland Connector Trail system. It makes for a hearty lunch after a morning hike, bike or run. My last visit was on a snowy Friday afternoon. I had the 8-dollar pork barbecue sandwich with a side of green beans and mashed potatoes. The barbecue checks all the boxes: smoky (not plain),tender and juicy (not dry) and well-cut (not too stringy or chunky). The slaw and sweet sauce were a nice accompaniment. The sides were good and what you might expect. They weren't overly cooked, salted or spiced, and my young son enjoyed them. The location has a healthy amount of mountain/country ambience, a cabinesque feel complete with wood carved animals and clever signs. Locally made a Shaker furniture and bags of pork rinds are for sale out front. At the moment, the main dining area is closed, so we ordered at the walk-up window and waited in the cozy, enclosed and heated porch area, which has both table and counter seating. The owner is an absolute mess of being pissed off all the time. I live a few miles away and only visit when nothing else is open. Once the lock down hit, this place chose to close their indoor seating, but then began to patronize their customers with many signs saying things like "don't come inside", and lots of captions saying... "look" "look"... the latest strategy is to install the smallest house window you ever saw, to force all customers to stay outside. a poor window which gets slammed by the owner between each order ( as seen pictured). Stay away. if the u++haul rentals, and log furniture out front wasn't enough of a clue, stay away. This is a bitter business, that needs to just turn into a U++haul rental company. read more

My family and I were visiting Chattanooga for the weekend and rented an air bnb in Trenton... on our drive to it, we passed this restaurant. We decided to try it out for dinner. HOLY SMOKES!! My husband had the half rack of ribs... you could blow on the bone and it would fall out of the meat. PHENOMENAL. Ribs are a tough sell for my husband... and he was super impressed. He ordered the baked beans and potato salad... he really liked both! I ordered the pulled pork plate. First of all, portion size... huge! The meat, with no sauce, had a great flavor. It wasn't dry at all, like you often get from bbq restaurants. I ordered collards and Mac and cheese for my sides. Both, excellent! The service... the owner, I'm assuming, is a hoot. His signs show it, and so does the twinkle in his eye when I asked what he'd do if I rang his buzzer more than one time. "I'd hit you in the nose," he said. "Promise?" I replied. We both laughed. I've been by the Trading Post for barbecue a handful of times and have never experienced rudeness of any kind. But then again, I'm looking for the best barbecue around, not a shoulder to cry on. Walking in, we were greeted right away and was told we could sit anywhere. My friend loves brisket and ordered that along with two sides which I forgot. We swung in for a quick dinner to go. Ordered the brisket, Mac n cheese and potatoe salad. While the Mac n cheese was a bit on the watery side, ty he potato salad and brisket were GREAT! Their spicy BBQ sauce has a great smokey taste so get a bit extra for the side! Not sure why other reviews said they were rude and in one, slams the window shut. Highly exaggerated! The man is simply concentrated on the food prep (good for the receiving end!) and the window....it doesn't have a counter weight so it automatically slams shut if not guided. My wife and I rented a cabin at Cloudland Canyon State Park for a long weekend. Our daughter was meeting us there and we brought most of the food, including Brunswick Stew (my dads recipe which was really close to her family's recipe). She had planned to get BBQ locally and after seeing the smoke bellowing from the Trading Post we decided to Yelp it. Health score was perfect. Reviews were the typical mix with highs, lows and almost non-existent middle of the roads. There were two recent reviews that were highly negative and mostly attacking the signage and painted the owner as an angry man. As a business owner myself, all to often a negative review is not a truthful one but a jab due to personal issues (prince/princess complex, anti-twoA, "insert blank here"). We ordered 2lbs of BBQ w/sweet sauce & a quart of coleslaw at the window. We had a nice conversation discussing hickory wood, a brief history of the restaurant, his marriage of 38 years and his grandson, who climbed off a school bus as we were waiting. I mentioned the stew we'd brought and he said they sell it too but it doesn't sell well in the summer. I asked him if it was chunky or thick. He said thick. Later that afternoon, we heated some of his pork BBQ, my wife's Brunswick stew & opened the cole slaw. Cole slaw was really good, slightly sweet, julienned not chopped. The pork was delightful. Shredded perfectly with the perfect amount of juiciness it paired well with that thick Brunswick Stew. When he said his stew was thick, I lost all doubt it would be good. Perfect stop on the way to or from Cloudland Canyon! Although if your going to stop before hiking don't eat to much food you won't be able to move! The brisket sandwich was to die for. The meat was cooked to perfection and the flavor was on point. It came with some slaw on top and just absolutely hit the spot. Plus it was only six dollars and came out quick. I think I was in and out within maybe 10 minutes. They have only outdoor to go seating because of covid but don't wear masks since your up north. Just an Fyi. This place is delicious! We all had the BBQ pork sandwiches and the buns are 5" across! There are two choices of sauce, sweet and sweet hot. Both were wonderful, but the hot definitely had a kick to it. The slaw was fresh and flavorful. Have passed by the smokehouse many times on the way to Canyon Grill and finally stopped to try their BBQ. First let me say that BBQ is VERY subjective. Still in COVID mode, so order on the porch and either sit outside or takeaway. We sat outside. Orders were pork plate with collards and chili. And brisket plate with collards and green beans. Sides were good. Chili was very tomato-ey. Sadly, I wouldn't call either protein BBQ. They were both more like roasted and shredded. No smoke flavor at all. The brisket was not traditionally sliced and had some sort of thin sauce mixed in it...not the same sauce as was provided separately. I changed my mindset to think of it as pot roast instead of BBQ and it was okay. The menu lists both BBQ beef plate and BBQ brisket plate; the server even referred to mine as brisket so i guess I got the correct plate. Maybe they had an off day, but we probably won't visit again...there's a better BBQ joint closer to the house. read more
