Had my catalytic converter stolen right off my Subaru Forester on NW 23rd in Portland. Can you believe they stole it in about 2 minutes right in front of a busy restaurant? Absolutely infuriating! The reviews look great! and I read them! $3000 Disappointment! In September of 2023, my wife and I living in Phoenix after much searching found a Westfalia in Portland that looked good. Buying remotely, we wanted a thorough inspection/assessment by a reputable Vanagon mechanic. The Samba listed 3 in Portland, Trafton's being one of them. Perhaps I should have selected another shop because Trafton's had been the mechanic of the current owner. They recommended their $400 top to bottom inspection and it was worth it to me to pay that before flying to Portland to purchase the vehicle. Long story short, along with a lengthy list of recommended services (over $5K) they recommended repairing some leaky seals in the transmission. On our drive from Portland to Phoenix, the transmission whined from the get-go. We checked the Transmission oil which was fine and had it replaced shortly thereafter. I couldn't believe the transmission was worn out as I trusted that it had been inspected and certified during a thorough assessment by Trafton. Additionally, the AC coolant had completely leaked out by the time we got to southern California. The transmission was completely worn out. Amazing service! I brought in my Subaru, which was having some issues. They did thorough diagnostics and it turned out to be an easy fix, but found one of my wheel bearings was loose. Needed an oil change in my 2018 Audi Q7 and couldn't believe what the dealerships in the area were telling me about how long my car would be there for just that service, 24-48 hours. For an oil change, get real. Coworker of mine told me about Trafton's and said they are the best. I looked them up and could see they get great reviews. Called and booked my appointment for an oil change and tire rotation. Showed up just before 8am and as I was getting out of my car they came to me to check me in and called me by name. They listened to what I wanted done and took into account that I was heading out of town later that day with my wife. They got all the work done way ahead of schedule. I was so impressed by the service at Trafton's. I sent in an inquiry about replacing our windshield motor and they called right away to set something up and told me that instead of hopping in and replacing the motor, they'd do an inspection to make sure it wasn't a simpler problem that would be cheaper and easier. They got me in right away and kept me up to date on what they were running into. Not only did they fix our windshield issue, they also found that the last time we had an oil change they had stripped the plug and it caused a crack in the pan so they fixed that for us as well. We feel a lot safer in our car and now have a trusty mechanic that we can use in the future, too! read more

Wyatt at Trafton's was super friendly and helpful. I hadn't taken my car into Jeff a Trafton's just under a year an ago and had a serious issue worked on with the fuel injectors and valve $3k+. During that process there was a faulty part installed or one the seals wasn't fully tightened which resulted in oil getting everywhere in my car and on my driveway. When I took my car in to get an oil change the technicians at Jiffy told me there was oil everywhere which explained the stains on my driveway. I took it back into Trafton's and they did their best to fix the issue and clean it up. Well I think the oil did some more damage, because I ended up having to put another $2.5k into the car. Armstrong VW did some of the work and noted that someone had worked on the fuel injectors but had reused one time use bolts on the rail. I called Wyatt and he had me bring in the car to replace the bolts along with a screw for the fuel filter I had lost while replacing it. Wyatt did this for free and the car is running great ever since. Only reason I didn't give them five stars is because of the original mishap under previous leadership which caused a lot of the problems, but sounds like Wyatt has got things under watch now and providing great customer service. read more

Took my vanagon in for them to find an exhaust leak, they told me it was leaking at the flex pipe. I brought it home and discovered that was not the case and that it had a blown gasket at the manifold to turbo connection. I documented this and sent them pictures to prove it and then asked for my money back as they didn't find the leak. They refunded the money. Did a good job installing my power steering pump. read more

These guys have been my saviors on more than a few occasions. I had a 2013 VW Passat that decided at 75k miles to drop its transmission out. They got me back to running very soon. They are knowledgeable about VWs, friendly, and don't mind if you find a better deal elsewhere (but you usually won't, esp considering their expertise). I have a 2017 VW Passat now, and once the service contract is up, they will be the only ones doing my maintenance. They even saved me once when Dick Hannah VW decided to leave the oil cap off and the air filter open, causing all sorts of issues. read more

There's been changes at the House of Trafton. They appear good. You'll notice the small things when you drive up. The sign out front has been updated; it now reads 'TRAFTON'S VW', simple black letters centered in a white background. The big iron cross on the west side of the building is gone; the merry gallimaufry of old cannibalized Veedubs in the back has been simplified. Stepping into the shop, though, was a revelation. One of the charming things about visiting Trafton's was the decades of ... stuff ... that lined the place. You could tell that Serious Mechanics had worked there for a very long time. One of the consolations of waiting to pay whatever bill you owed was the strange pleasure of looking at all of that cruft. The place has been thoroughly, and I mean THOROUGHLY, cleaned. To the walls. New coat of paint, the whole nine yards. Now, if you detect a bit of apprehension here, then I must plead guilty. After all, those of you who trust your cars to a mechanic (that is, all of us eventually) know a couple of things; you're going to be spending considerable money and part of your identity is out of commission until that money gets spent. This is why a mechanic who you're on the same wavelength with is worth his or her weight in platinum. Bill was that sort of mechanic. He dug everyone, and I mean EVERYONE. So when it became clear that Bill was no longer there, everything became (at least) a semi-unknown quantity. Was I going to get the same level of service? Well, ya'll WILL notice that I five-starred the review. Allow me to lead you out of this thicket of doubt I've lead you into. There's a new fellah behind the counter managing the place. His name is Dan and he's a sure hand. He listened to our problem (the windshield wipers, we feared, had given up their last) and chatted with us at a knowledgeable and friendly level. My wife led the discussion; she's the mechanical adept in the family, not me. She felt Dan's approach to the situation was much like Bill's would have been, and in fact Dan told us that Bill had actually been retired for the last two years and was taking his time to make sure he sold the business to just the right sort of person. After our experience we think he may have chosen well. The wiper motor, as it turned out, just needed a clean and relube. Marcos, from the old crew, is still there and I think he did the work. And Dan handled us, really, much the same way that Bill would have. And he drives a 72 VW Type I, just like I do. So, that's a win for you right there. Bottom line: Bill sold the business and took the VW Museum with him. We wish him well and will miss him, but he sold the business to a worthy new owner who will do competent work. Bill Trafton is a stand up guy and a very knowledgable mechanic (he has been in the VW business for over 40 years). He always is trying to save you money and get you back on the road as cheaply as possible. Trafton proved hands down that we could trust them to do the best thing for my little beetle convertible. We are new to the Portland area and were promptly lied to by the VW dealer Herzog-Meier. After having Trafton look at my car they quickly fixed the issue and only charged me for the exact problem. Her zig-Meier gave me an estimate of $5000!
