I was spending the day in San Diego, but was heading back up to OC relatively early so I decided to…read moregrab a late lunch in lieu of dinner. I had been to SD twice before and wanted to check out somewhere I hadn't been. Enter Blue Water - the reviews and pics looks great, and the weather called for seafood, so I decided to head here and check it out. This Blue Water is located on India St in Mission Hills, though they have another location in Ocean Beach. Parking can be a little tricky, as there is no parking lot they are on a main road close to a split in a residential area. The interior is pretty spacious - the fish market is towards the front, and the ordering counter is in the back. Seating is spread out between the main area where the market is, a side room, and outdoors in the front. Decor and aesthetics are casual - very seafood restaurant-esque with straightforward design. The foot traffic set up so you order first and then find a table before they serve your meal to you. The menu is extensive - they have a large selection of fish that can be prepared several ways. It's a little overwhelming to take in, but there was no pressure for us to order; if there's a line all the more time to explore. I ultimately decided to get their mini shrimp tacos - these were served on a corn tortilla and topped with cabbage, tomatoes, onions, white sauce, and cheddar cheese with a side of tomatillo sauce. The tacos were great - super fresh, they didn't skimp on the shrimp, and all the flavors and textures worked really well together. I also ordered a cup of NE clam chowder which was good - not the best one I've had but for being in Southern California it held its own. Service was good - I'm seeing reviews of long lines but I think I came at the right time; there are barely a line to order and my meal was served shortly after that. Overall, Blue Water is a yes - I had a great experience here and wouldn't hesitate to return next time I'm in SD.

But after I…read moresettled the baby and everything away, they asked us to move because we hadn't ordered, even though my sister was nearly halfway through the line, and there were multiple empty tables. The worst part is, it wasn't even polite when they asked us. All the employees were giving us attitude for something they didn't tell us when we arrived, nor when they gave us the high chair. They want all four of us to stand in line instead of sitting at the empty tables. They seriously need training on customer service, at least to show empathy, sincerity and apologize to customers. I guess they don't care because we're Asian and believe they don't need our business here.

There's a lot very close by but parking is $8 ($5 if you get validation by making a $10 purchase in one of the shops at Seaport Village). A lot was sold out by the time we got there so I would recommend coming early in the morning. They had fishmongers scaling and cleaning fish off the pier and a wide array of fresh fish by the pound (prices were very affordable). When we were there, there was one "cooked foods" booth with clam chowder, ceviche, fish and chips, uni hand rolls, etc. Prices were fair but the line was long so we opted to skip it. Much of the menu was sold out by that time anyway. Food looked decent based on what I saw others eating. Overall it's worth a stop if you're in the area, want to do some shopping at Seaport Village, can find parking, etc. Otherwise I'm not sure it's worth a trip per se.

But for us out of towners, on the way to the airport stopping off for as one of our friends put it... "one last plate of fish", we enjoyed our pitstop here and seafood lunch with a harbor view. Something we weren't going to get again any time soon in the desert. Fish and chips weren't my favorite since I had 10/10 ones at Pelly's in Carlsbad. Chowder wasn't particularly memorable. Clam strips were enjoyable. The sourdough and dungenous was nostalgic. Again, nothing was amazing but just enjoying our final seafood lunch with the view made everything taste better. While it's not a must visit spot, it's still worth checking out if you're not a local for "one last plate of fish".

Look for the parking attendant walking around who will help you find a parking spot. We only had to wait about 4 minutes. The Restaurant/Market: The inside of this seafood market is pretty cool/ gives Seattle vibes with their displays of fresh fish over ice. They have a pretty big selection of food, daily specials, and catch of the day... and even some merchandise. You walk up and order at the counter and get a number. Where to eat? There's outside tables and tables upstairs on a balcony. We chose the balcony so we could look out over the harbor. We did see a Sea Lion swimming along while eating which was fun. It was relatively clean, very noisy, and it smells like fish there. What we ate: I ordered a fried seafood sampler platter with crab cakes, shrimp, and deep fried fish fillets. It was a bad choice. The fish tasted dry and old, it was greasy, and there was a lot of oil. My son got fish and chips and it tasted like mine, greasy, oily and not great. The fries were pretty awful (hard and tasted like they were re-fried to heat them up) My brother got the ahi salad which was just okay. The salad wasn't anything special, he said the fish tasted decent. My Mom got the clam chowder soup. It wasn't very flavorful and pretty watery. Overall- we were not impressed with the food at all. There's much better places to get fish in the are. The ambience of the area is great though, and it's lovely to be by the harbor!

She didn't make us feel rushed despite the growing line behind us (we were truly trying to hurry, though, because of it). If you like sashimi, get their sashimi appetizer! We haven't been able to find a good place for sashimi since we moved to Southern California 5 years ago. Don't get me wrong, we've gotten good sashimi, but not cut thick & with good quality that is worth the price like this place. The price wasn't even as high as many of the other sashimi places we've tried! They give you only 2 fish choices on the plate, however. They have listed about 5 or 6 different kinds, but it depends on what is available. We had salmon & tuna. Salmon is my favorite, but their tuna was fantastic! First time I can say I may have liked it better than the salmon!! Their other dishes we had were also yummy. My daughter loves scallops & they were cooked to perfection. I don't usually like scallops because most places cook them till they're rubbery. Not this place! My husband had swordfish & I had the sea bass. Both were also delicious, but I think they may have mixed up which plate went to which person. Good thing, as we were trying each others' food, my daughter noted the slight texture difference between the two (I hadn't had a chance to taste them yet). Interestingly, swordfish usually has a vastly different texture than bass, but here, they cook it so well, there wasn't a huge amount of difference! That says something since swordfish is usually very "meaty." If my daughter hadn't noticed, I wouldn't have complained even though I was looking forward to the bass. I like flakier fish. However, the bass wasn't as flaky as I anticipated, but both were so tender, the mix-up wasn't a deal breaker. I don't know how they season the rice, but YUM! Even though I'm Asian, I'm not one who usually eats the rice. It's usually just a filler for me, & since I don't eat much, I'd rather eat the "other stuff" & usually leave most of the rice. Not here! I almost couldn't get enough of it, lol! So good!! At the end, we needed boxes. We had to ask two different waitresses since the first one we asked never came with them. It's an "order at the register then find a table" type of place, so there wasnt any "service" to speak of. Be prepared to stand in line - this place is popular for a reason! Parking is a challenge, but worth it. We definitely will be back!

I'm a fan of a good Grab and Go meal. If it's one less line and register/ transaction I need to deal with- then, YAY for me! The hot kitchen and bakery (near the cash registers) have their own cashiers. And, it's gotten to the point, with me at least- anytime we swipe our debit/ credit cards- those transaction fees do add up. Any how- I grabbed a Pinoy Pork BBQ Bento BOX. Other varieties are chicken bbq, tapsilog and longsilog- to name a few. For $12- the portions are just perfect. The pork bbq on top of steamed white rice, pickled Daikon and onions, chicken pancit, and two pieces of bicho. I will make my visit here if I need something on my grocery list that Smart and Final across the street wouldn't have. As I strolled the aisles in the back of the store looking at beef and pork belly- I found small packages of diced pork belly! So, I grabbed one of those to make some pad Thai with. Near the lobster tank- headless shrimp are ready to be scooped and bagged! Shoppers can do that themselves. It's very chill here and on weekends the parking lot can be a bit chaotic.
