It was packed and pretty noisy, so not the best spot if you're looking for a quiet dinner, but the energy made it feel fun and lively. The drink menu had a lot to choose from--wine, handcrafted beer, cocktails, and mocktails. I ordered the "It's Pink and It's Bubbly" mocktail, which was refreshing and cute without being too sweet. My husband went with a beer and was happy with his pick. We started with the crispy arancini and whipped ricotta with honeycomb. The arancini had that golden, crunchy outside and a warm, comforting center. The whipped ricotta was probably my favorite appetizer--creamy, light, a little sweet from the honeycomb, and easy to keep going back for. For entrees, we had the short rib rigatoni fresh pasta and the prosciutto with wild mushroom white pizza. The short rib was tender and rich, and the rigatoni held up well with the sauce. The prosciutto and wild mushroom pizza had a nice savory flavor and felt a little lighter, but still filling. I can say that VAI is a solid choice for date night, a group dinner, or when you want good Italian-inspired food with drinks and a lively crowd. Just be ready for the noise if you go during a busy time.

Our food came out fast and they were kind enough to bring out my baby's meal earlier so he could eat right away. High chairs and kids meals are available here! I personally can't help but order the Bolognese almost every time because it's so delicious. We treated ourselves to tiramisu and a strawberry crumble dessert as well, and both were very good. It took a while for our server to take our order, and I wish we had been advised to share a few pizzas instead of ordering individually. I wouldn't say that the menu is overwhelming, but I rarely go to a restaurant where it takes me that long to decide what I want. There are lots of interesting options, from braised short rib ravioli to baked ziti, and several tasty appetizers (highly recommend the calamari). But we had come for the PIZZA. My daughter got the kids cheese pizza. It was surprisingly bigger than we thought, and at a great price. The kid only ate half before she said, "I like it...this might be better than [insert famous Chicago pizza brand]." (you MUST KNOW that this is high praise from a 3rd grader). My wife ordered the "They Don't Have Beef With Me" vegan Detroit-style pizza, and I have to admit, it was very good. Somehow they pulled off a buttery (but not butter) crust with melty vegan cheese (but NOT cheese ). Absolutely nailed it. I would have eaten more of hers if I hadn't ordered the Butcher pizza from the wood-fired menu. It was OUTSTANDING. Great flavor, perfect texture. Easily one of thee best wood-fired pizzas I've ever had. We're not drinkers, but they do have a good wine list and some nice zero-proof options, including the Amber Apple and The Drip. We didn't make it to dessert, mostly because the portions are generous, so our bellies (and our to-go boxes) were full. We will definitely be back to try other menu options and for dessert.
