Stopped in for a late-night dinner with my husband (who's Korean, so expectations were definitely in place), and it was a pretty quiet night with hardly anyone there. Right away, the staff stood out, super warm, welcoming, and attentive, which always sets a great tone. We ordered the shrimp pancake, spicy seafood soup, and shrimp fried rice. The pancake had good flavor, but it leaned a bit too doughy for my taste, I personally love that crispier, golden edge. The spicy seafood soup, though, was the star of the night! It was flavorful, comforting, and came in a very generous portion. I do wish it had a bit more heat, but that's an easy fix next time, just ask for extra spice. Unfortunately, the shrimp fried rice didn't hit the mark. It was a bit too soggy and lacked that satisfying texture you want from fried rice. Overall, while a couple of dishes fell short, there were enough positives that I'd absolutely come back and explore more of the menu. This might be my favorite Korean spot in HTX! My friends and I wanted a nice hearty meal late at night and thankfully Tree Garden is open until midnight so we decided to give this spot a try. There was plenty of parking and we were surprised to be the only ones to be in the restaurant on a Friday night. We ordered the following: Seafood Pancake Perfectly crispy with a good amount of seafood. I've been to numerous Korean places in HTX and wasn't too impressed with this specific dish but Tree Garden does it well! Marinated Beef Short Ribs w/buckwheat noodles I love that this restaurant offers this combo and I'd highly recommend this if you're craving both noodles and some protein! The noodles were so satisfying and they have slices of asian pear in it that adds a nice juicy, refreshing touch to the dish. The beef ribs were tender, savory, and full of flavor. Seafood Pure Tofu Hot Pot This was the star of the show in my opinion. My group had 4 people including me and we each got a large bowl. The broth was so delicious and with the silken tofu and seafood, this was our favorite dish of the night. Aside from the dishes we ordered, the banchan was fresh and delicious! Our favorite was the green beans which were savory and had a little bit of a kick to it. The ajuhmas working here were very friendly and did an amazing job at serving- we really appreciate how they served our bowls of soup and took care of the leftovers in to-go boxes. I think I figured out why this restaurant is called Tree Garden. There is a forest around the corner alongside Oak Tree Drive on Long Point Road. The reason I came here was because Super Hmart was closed at 9:30 on Sunday. I pulled up my phone and searched the nearest Korean restaurant that was still open. The direction was clear but I had a hard time locating it. The parking lot is well lit but the sign was not obvious. I managed to find parking at the designated spot. As I walked in, I felt a little claustrophobic because of the tall cubicle walls. They were painted black. Although they provide privacy from the booth over. A friendly lady seated me by the entrance. She must know that I was hungry. We chatted for a bit as I learned it's been open for about 9 years. She frequently checked on me after my dish arrived. I ordered BEEF SMALL INTESTINE NAPA SOUP. The menu said it has tripe but I couldn't find it. This dish has a V symbol, which means it can be a vegetarian dish. Since the pork beef intestines were hard to chew, I made it vegetarian for myself. The banchan had smaller portions. I like them because they were delightful. Kimchi was flavorful. I asked for another bowl of rice ($2.00). Overall, I enjoyed my dinner here. I think I was the last customer at the time. I think I'll be back to try other dishes with V symbols. read more

As for the seafood + soft tofu hot pot, it was quite a generous portion. I've never seen so much tofu in one pot before! Good variety of seafood as well such as octopus, clams, mussels etc. I feel that the hot pot broth was just a bit bland. It could've used either more garlic, soy sauce, or fish sauce even. Would give 10 stars if I could! This place has definitely made my top one Korean restaurant in Houston and I can't believe it took me this long to try it out. You are seated within cubicles which gives nice privacy and the staff were the sweetest people and made this an even more enjoyable dining experience. We ordered seafood pancake which was crispy and came with the garlic sweet sauce with a perfect seafood to batter ratio. We also ordered a beef and octopus hot pot which was the star of the show with large variety of vegetables and slices of beef and chewy octopus which the staff helped us cook, cut and serve to us. The broth was so flavorful that was spicy with a sweet undertone that made it so addicting. I also ordered a Korean ramen with egg which is such a comfort food and the broth was so spicy and flavorful. The side dishes are always such a great addition with their kimchi really giving a tangy kick to the rest of the meal. My partner and I tried this tasty, hole-in-the-wall Korean restaurant in the Spring Branch area. I took advantage of the lunch special ordered the mildly spicy shredded beef vegetable soup, which was incredibly filling though the meat was slightly overcooked (perhaps also a function of my not eating it fast enough and it cooking in the broth). I liked that this place paid attention to the details, from the refill of banchan to offering us purple as opposed to white rice at no extra charge. Very non-descript on the outside in a run-down looking strip mall but definitely a diamond in the rough. The interior is very cute and traditional looking with private rooms and cute booths. The restaurant itself is clean and super nice inside. Each booth is separated by walls so you have privacy and pretty good for social distancing during Covid. They have the little bell thing you can ring for service; which means quick and great service! I forgot these existed in Korean places and I absolutely love the concept. But the food is just mediocre. We ended up ordering a bunch of dishes to try: *Kimchi Dumplings - served hot! I found the flavors inside the dumplings to be a bit on the bland side. We ended up dipping them in the pancake sauce. 3/5 *Seaweed Rolls - these are seaweed wrapped around some clear noodles, battered and deep fried. Served with a mustard/mayo type sauce. The most impressive thing about this dish was how crispy they got it. The batter was pretty good but the overall flavor again was bland. 3/5 *Seafood Paejun aka Seafood Pancake - this one came really doughy and not crispy enough. There was a lot of green onion but barely any seafood. Literally a few pieces of squid here and there and maybe 1 shrimp in the whole thing. 2/5 *Dukbokki aka Spicy Rice Cakes - this dish came with rice cakes in a spicy sauce with fish cakes and a hard boiled egg. Flavors were ok here and the rice cakes were what I expected. 4/5 *Seafood Tofu Soup - this one came with clams, mussels and a few pieces of shrimp and squid. Initially I felt the flavors were lost and I could only taste spice - it was better heated up the next day as the flavors melded together. Tofu was plentiful - not the softest tofu used though. 3/5 Overall, the place was average at best with great service. The atmosphere, food, service, and basically everything at this restaurant gives the vibe of a mom-and-pop. The food is delicious! Arguably some of the best Korean food I've had in Houston. I do agree it IS a little pricey; however, for the portion sizes that you get and the quality of the food, it is totally worth it. I haven't had their bbq yet, so I cannot attest to it yet. There really aren't super amazing Korean restaurants in Houston. I lived in Dallas a few years back and their Korean food scene is just leagues above Houston. I think in Dallas, Tree Garden would be a 3 star restaurant, in Houston, it's a 4 on a good day. The staff are super nice and the food comes out quickly. I've never had a hard time finding parking or a table. I like their large menu and little private cubby dining spaces. They're very cozy and you feel like you're in an old Korean home. I like the atmosphere. I usually just get the soondubu jigae with seafood. It's no BCD tofu house but it's solid and hard to mess up. We also got one of the shareable stews (soondubu) and they served it table side for us. The fried chicken is not the best. It tastes almost like American fried chicken, it's so flavorless and the batter so thick. The pajeon can be very greasy. The naengmyun is tasty and refreshing. The best thing is the banchan. There is a huge variety and you can always request more. At the end of the meal, you get this sweet rice drink. I love it and wish my friends would not drink theirs and give it to me instead (hasn't happened yet). All in all, a solid restaurant if you're craving some regular (not fusion) Korean food in Houston. read more

I was in Paris in the Luxembourg JARDIN When I got arrested for letting a GUARD IN I begged Chirac and Merkel for a PARDON But nobody remembered all the videos I STARRED IN I broke out of prison by knocking out the WARDEN Made it to an ATM but couldn't get my CARD IN Stowed away in a container full of SARDIN (es) Fooled the US customs with a load of JARGON Emerged a free man and found myself in HOUSTON And the smell of soup was making me HARDEN Yuk Gae Jang in the air gave me a HARD ON So I followed the smell and it took me to TREE GARDEN WHAT What to get: Yuk Gae Jang or anyone you fancy Huh?: I mean anything you fancy Kind of an obvious name though. I mean, if your garden doesn't have trees, there's a problem, no? If you just come here to use the restroom, it's Pee Garden, but they won't be happy about it. I'm always delighted when I find a restaurant that's open extremely late - that also happens to have delicious food, and is affordable. Tree Garden is supposed to be open until midnight every night, but they do close-ups sometime after 11 if they're quiet, which unfortunately they often are. I think it's related to the area that they're in. It's not exactly a hot spot for restaurants around midnight. It's more of a residential area. But they should be busy because they're very, very good. And much better than 99% of what's open at this time of night, including all the crap that is packed out the door in more fashionable parts of town. If you get bitten by a creepy crawly, it's Flea Garden. The Yuk Gae Jang is great, and the dumplings are good too. I'm looking forward to coming back here a 4th and 5th time to try more dishes off the menu, and it's always nice to have a good option for Korean food, which is one of my favorite cuisines. If Indians buy the place, it's Ghee Garden. Excellent decor, very clean and traditional with private booths (not very good for people watching though, and lonely if you eat alone. Lonely AF. Service is really nice here, but what you get charged for can sometimes vary. For example I was told that an extra bowl of rice was free and then I was charged $2 for it. Since the owners were also doing the serving I just knocked that price off of the tip that I was going to give so it balances itself out. I just do not like being nickel-and-dimed and it's almost enough for me to lower this excellent late night option to a 4-star rating. But that's the way the Korean Seafood Pancake crumbles, and the food is good, the hours are good, the people are nice, so I'm not going to deduct a star for that. I should though. And I wish they wouldn't nickel and dime loyal customers. Or any customers. It's not worth it. If you're a princess and your bed feels lumpy, it's Pea Garden. Another issue is that if you're here around 11 (an hour before closing), you will feel maybe a little rushed, and they will rush out of there right after you're done. And close up the restaurant early. As you can tell, I've had very different experiences at Tree Garden. One or two positive ones when I came early, and a less enjoyable, rushed, nickel-and-dimed one when I was here late. But if the food was free, it'd be Free Garden, not Tree Garden. The little side dishes they give you are excellent. But my friend and partner-in-crime thinks they are good and comes back here with me just to eat them. I'm also not crazy about the latest YGJ that I had. It's tasty but nowhere near as good as the ones I've had in NYC and Buffalo that I loved. It's not bad at all tho. If they open up a location in Aspen, it'll be Ski Garden. Barbie says: "Tree Garden is really good and open late! The soup was really flavorful and a good level of spiciness. I also enjoyed the kimchi dumplings! It's really cute with all the table cubicles!" If you find this place so sexy that you spontaneously combust, so to speak, that's not Tree Garden, that's Me Garden (tosses hair). And the last time we were here there was a big, aggressive, violent fight outside the Korean Bar in the same plaza. So yours truly went over to the huge guy scaring the crap out of the little guy, and told him the police were on the way and that he needed to back off. That didn't go down very well, but he did as I said. #YelpTough And if you spend all your money here, it's Spree Garden. If you run from the cops and hide here, it's Flee Garden. If they sell honey it's Bee Garden. If you came here before it opened, it was Pre-Garden. Presented with a few Korean choices in that specific area, we opted to go with Garden Korean restaurant. We got ourselves a nice private pod and were presented with the menus. It took a good 12 to 15 minutes to decide on what to order. There were too many choices, and I couldn't really narrow down my choice. I would opt for one thing and then after speaking with the waiter and getting a more detailed description, would then prevent me from ordering that item. This went on for some time and I finally decided to go with bulgogi beef which was actually just listed as a lunch item. We also ordered some dumplings and Bibimbab(beef on crispy rice). Bulgogi beef is a Korean specialty and was very good. It had the right amount of veggies complimenting it and sauteed with it. Beef was tender and easy to chew. Got a nice bowl of rice with it and a small amount of soup and array of sides. Our dumplings were served with sauce and they both tasted pretty good. Also the beef bowl was good and it was served with shredded veggies n rice with an egg on top. We enjoyed our dinner. Our service was up to par. There were different people bringing the food and refilling our drink orders. Our main waiter was very patient with us as he explained in detail about the choices I was inclining towards. What a treat! Our church handed out vouchers when COVID peaked to help support businesses and restaurants during the pandemic. TBH, I had totally forgotten about the vouchers and forgot to use them...thankfully they were gracious enough to still allow us to use it even though it was expired. If you know the area, it's filled with taquerias, taco trucks, MAM's Resale shop, and then shared by what's left of Korea Town in Houston. But once you walk in, it takes you to the traditional, cozy, private dining experience you'd expect from a Korean bbq restaurant. The booths are created and enclosed just high enough to enjoy your privacy while dining. Koreans love their privacy when eating a meal. My mom and I reviewed the menu, she ordered to-go and we waited while drinking hot barley tea - her favorite. We waited about twenty minutes and took the food home and grilled the meats at home. While the side dishes, purple rice, and the marinade were on point, the beef we ordered were cut into thick chunks and was a bit chewy after we grilled them. Some kiwi would help. Price point is what you'd expect from a typical Korean bbq restaurant. It's a bit pricey but if you're sharing the meal it doesn't dent your wallet too much!... Very convenient since this restaurant closes late. I do sometimes get out of work late...retail...so super convenient! Even on weekdays. The waitresses that work here are super nice. Lots of selections on the menu. The only minus is the parking lot...I think there is a night club in the back..so a little shady. The food is authentic and good.
