Had to get my Filipino food fix and came into get some lumpia, toron, and karioka. Always so friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Nice and organized inside with a few tables to eat at.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Good food. Great service. Generous portions and fair pricing makes this visit even better. The menu offers a variety of great dishes but my daughter and I did 2 item combo with rice. She had the lechon (which was the best dish out of w writhing we ordered. The crisp was just perfect. She also ordered bopis and that was delicious too. My sisig was the best I've had in a long while. It was crisp, moist, crunchy. I ordered fried chicken wings and they were really good but only came with 3. The food was enough and we were really full. This might just be a definite go to for Filipino when we are craving and in the area.

Trining's is a small Filipino restaurant and bakery place in Mira Mesa, offering breakfast and home-cooked cuisine. It was my first time trying Filipino food in SoCal and I thought that the 2 choice entree for less than $15 was a steal. Our entire group got the 2 choice entree plate, and here's my verdict for the entrees I tried: Pork Bopis (5/5): I liked the tangy sour vinegar sauce, there was a lot more complexity and depth compared to the other options. Loved it, now my favorite Filipino food. Beef Kare Kare (4/5): Creamy curry with beef and tripe morsels. I wished there was a bit more spice like Indian curry, but I loved the soup sauce. Lechon Kawali (2.5/5): A little dry and cold on arrival which made it sadder than other lechons I've had in the past. Vegetable lumpia (3.5/5): Crispy and couldn't really tell it was mostly vegetables. I did want there to be more filling per roll so I could taste that part more versus the fried outer skin. Taho (3/5): I wished the tofu was either served cold or warm because lukewarm was okay at best. I did like the sago balls which I usually dislike because it was chewy like mochi bits. Overall, I liked Trining's and it seems like its also popular with the locals too!

Their ube suman which is really delicious. The service is slow because the food is made to order. The shop has a few tables but it felt cramped a bit cluttered inside.

Menu as of 10/15/2019. You're welcome!

Go here for quickly made to order ambrosial Filipino food. 11/17/2024. Fried calamari and Beef Tapa Combo ($13.99 + $2). Fried calmari: has a crispy light batter that allows the tender proteins to shine, 4/5 stars. Beef tapa: is tender, sweet and savory, 5/5 stars. Garlic rice: soft and fluffy rice with plenty of fried garlic that goes well with any entrée, 4/5 stars. My usual order is the above mentioned surf and turf combo, I also recommend their bistek Tagalog, beef kare-kare, fried garlic chicken wings, pancit malabon, pork menudo, and their freshly packaged fried chicken skin. Call ahead and place your order for faster service.

    Ube ensaymada

I ducked into Trining's Bakery on an ever-present, sweet treat-induced whim as I was trying to make my single-minded way to Paris Sandwiches. I didn't realize until after I left that I had gotten there 15 minutes before closing, so in retrospect I really appreciate the kind and patient service I received as I dithered over the pastries on display. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The shop itself is very unassuming, with limited in-store dining but copious pastry display space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ended up getting an Ube Ensaymada, a huge pastry that spanned my entire hand. The bread itself had a great texture, though I could tell that it was not the freshest at the end of the day. The ube filling was not too sweet, and I loved the chewy texture of the coconut pieces in the filling. You can really tell that the ube was not artificial, which I appreciated. I couldn't finish it all in one sitting, but it kept great in the fridge till the next day. Looking at the reviews now, I realize I did not order their popular items. Even so, I enjoyed my pastry and the prices. I will definitely stop by another time to grab a plate or some lumpia!

    Shanghai lumpias
    Corinna W.

A friend recommended this place to me and this is the 2nd time I've ordered a tray of Shanghai lumpias for our parties. $70 for 100 lumpias. It's made with pork filling. The lumpias are always fresh, crispy and flavorful. I haven't tried anything else yet. But this is my new go to place for lunpias! This is always a hit at my parties. Also the Lady who took my order is very friendly.

If u need food for a party it's super easy to just give a call and inquire. We got a lot- lechon, puto, lumpia, fried rice, fried shrimp, dinuguan, kare kare, leche flan. Super great quality masarap!!!

    Pandan cake

My friends and I were feeling snacky so we decided to try this place out. It is a small Filipino restaurant/bakery in the corner of the shopping center. When you enter, your eyes move straight to the display case filled with a bunch of cakes and other baked goods. Once you are done salivating, you can order your meal at the front counter. The lady working that day was very friendly and the food was prepared quickly. My friends got some snacks while I felt a bit hungry so I ordered a chicken adobo and rice meal. The meal was very good but I regret not ordering some lumpia to go with it. My friends and I shared some snacks including cheese bread and pandan cake. The pandan cake was sweet and very soft. It even had a subtle flavor of honey to it which I enjoyed. I failed to mention that I actually had an ulterior motive for trying this place, because I had researched ahead of time and found out that they sold biko. Biko is a sweet rice cake from the Philippines that is a bit sticky and it has a subtle sweetness to it. I bought a large circular biko since I did not see any smaller portions of it on the menu. I was happy to discover that the biko I bought tasted just like the small bit-sized pieces I had had before with a delicious latik layering on top. Overall, Trining's is a wonderful local business serving delicious food and desserts. I am excited to try something new the next time I stop by.

Tray of the best Turon!! (50pcs)
    Patrick D.

The best turon in town!! Ordered a tray of Turon (50pcs) for work. Pre-ordered a few days ahead and when I got there at the time for pick up, although the turon was still frying and needed another 15minutes to finish, it was worth the wait! The turon was made fresh and I had a handful of good feedback/compliments on how delicious they were! I honestly never had turon this good and the it might even be better than my filipino family parties! Thanks Trinings for making the delicious turon, please never change the recipe and keep the same chef who made it! :)

Chicken mami -- noodle soup with cabbage and hard boiled egg on top
    Joyce L.

Very Mom n' Pop shop vibes. Love how easy and quick it is to order. Comfort food that hits the spot. Pretty authentic Filipino food, based on what I've heard from my Filipino friends, so that's a big plus too! :) Their rice soups are excellent on a cold rainy day. Con: limited evening hours. They close at 6pm, so not really a dinner option for me. And I'm not an early bird for breakfast, nor do I go out for lunch on weekdays due to work. So although I want to try more of their dishes, few chances to do so.

    Puto
    Kimberly H.

Small bakery and cafe serving homemade Filipino desserts, pastries, and food. We walked around and picked up a few items for to go. You could take a seat and enjoy your treats. It's like eating in your Lola's kitchen being served. Picked up a bag of Ube Bread ($4.99) and Assorted Puto ($6.99). We were very happy with our selections. The ube bread dough has a great fluffy and slight chew texture. The puto had the perfect light and doughy bite.

I like the different variety of table seating to the different rooms of where you can dine. It was inviting and very spacious. Everyone that we encountered was super friendly and outgoing. It was very great hospitality. Our waiter was very helpful and check in on us quite often. The service was Superb. Now the food, we went on a Wednesday which they have Happy Hour all day. We ordered The Record Room Burger which came with Fries. This was very tasty. The fries were excellent. I tried one of my friend's dishes which was the Lamb Meatballs and that was amazing. Sadly, the B&R Mac n Cheese did not do it for me. It was missing seasoning and the flakes tasted stale. The staff did give us salt & pepper to jazz it up which did help. Regardless of the mac n cheese, I really enjoyed this place. The red wine was perfection. Overall it was a great experience and I gotta go back to check out other food items.

We did have a fairly large group so we occupied the entire back wall corner. It was a bit snug in terms of table space and leg space, but we made it work. The staff were doing their best to keep track of everyone's orders, but there were a few mix-ups in the end. Food came out in waves and had a good cadence to the meal. - FOOD - We had a lot to share amongst our group! Wagyu Tartare ($14.00): Really flavorful tartare! Had a nice tartness to it due to the Black Vinegar. Pork Belly Baos ($12.00 - 2pc): Honestly this was just OK to me. Ahi Tuna Crudo ($18.00): Very bright and refreshing. Chicken Satay ($12.00): A little dry on some chicken pieces. Crispy Brussels ($10.00): Not as crispy as I'd hoped but still good. B&R Mac & Cheese ($8.00): Very creamy, very cheesy. The pasta was a bit soft though. Flat Iron Steak & Fries ($25.00): Decent piece of steak, cooked medium well. I honestly enjoyed the fries a lot! However, there must have been something expired, cooked wrong, or just not up to quality as many of us got stomach issues that night and the next day. We were all spread out so not sure what it could have been given we ate a few different items. - OVERALL - It was a cool vibe and they have some good tasting items, but considering a few of us got sick, I'm a bit wary to come back.

So I am glad we decided to share the biscuits and gravy but let me run down each thing. Bloody Mary Flight: Honestly every single one was amazing. My favorite was definitely the pickle Mary! Everything tasted so delicious and was garnished beautifully. Well worth the 22 dollars. Biscuits and Gravy: Absolute perfection of comfort food. The biscuits were so fluffy and well seasoned. The gravy was also soooo good, just like my mom makes. The sausage in it was also cooked so well and juicy. I've never tried mashed potatoes with the biscuits and gravy but it worked very well!
