I was greeted with kindness the moment I walked in and when I placed my order I was asked specifically when I would want to come pick it up the next day. She had the lechon (which was the best dish out of w writhing we ordered. The crisp was just perfect. She also ordered bopis and that was delicious too. The best Filipino breakfast place in Mira Mesa. Whenever I would have a fix for Tocino or Longonesa, I would always go over here. They have a bakery that you can get pan de sal and other assorted items. It was my first time trying Filipino food in SoCal and I thought that the 2 choice entree for less than $15 was a steal. Our entire group got the 2 choice entree plate, and here's my verdict for the entrees I tried: Pork Bopis (5/5): I liked the tangy sour vinegar sauce, there was a lot more complexity and depth compared to the other options. Loved it, now my favorite Filipino food. Beef Kare Kare (4/5): Creamy curry with beef and tripe morsels. I wished there was a bit more spice like Indian curry, but I loved the soup sauce. Lechon Kawali (2.5/5): A little dry and cold on arrival which made it sadder than other lechons I've had in the past. Vegetable lumpia (3.5/5): Crispy and couldn't really tell it was mostly vegetables. I did want there to be more filling per roll so I could taste that part more versus the fried outer skin. Taho (3/5): I wished the tofu was either served cold or warm because lukewarm was okay at best. I did like the sago balls which I usually dislike because it was chewy like mochi bits. I love this Filipino food restuarant. It serves really good Pansit. I enjoy the bakery that is also found in the restaurant. They had many Filipino dishes that are popular when traveling to the Philippines. I think that any Asian restuarant that serves Asian cuisine that has good noodles are noteworthy to dine at. The Pansit really goes well with the dish. They have a surprisingly big selection of Filipino food that I could remember. It has a great offering of Filipino desserts and sweets. I ducked into Trining's Bakery on an ever-present, sweet treat-induced whim as I was trying to make my single-minded way to Paris Sandwiches. I didn't realize until after I left that I had gotten there 15 minutes before closing, so in retrospect I really appreciate the kind and patient service I received as I dithered over the pastries on display. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The shop itself is very unassuming, with limited in-store dining but copious pastry display space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ended up getting an Ube Ensaymada, a huge pastry that spanned my entire hand. The bread itself had a great texture, though I could tell that it was not the freshest at the end of the day. The ube filling was not too sweet, and I loved the chewy texture of the coconut pieces in the filling. You can really tell that the ube was not artificial, which I appreciated. I couldn't finish it all in one sitting, but it kept great in the fridge till the next day. Looking at the reviews now, I realize I did not order their popular items. It truly pains me to write this. My family has been loyal customers for over 20 years--going back to the Gemmae's days--and Trining's has been our go-to for every single gathering. We always order 100 Shanghai Lumpia, but our most recent order was a shock. The lumpia were completely different: mostly wrapper with barely any seasoned filling, and they lacked that signature crunch we've loved for decades. My friends and I were feeling snacky so we decided to try this place out. It is a small Filipino restaurant/bakery in the corner of the shopping center. When you enter, your eyes move straight to the display case filled with a bunch of cakes and other baked goods. Once you are done salivating, you can order your meal at the front counter. The lady working that day was very friendly and the food was prepared quickly. My friends got some snacks while I felt a bit hungry so I ordered a chicken adobo and rice meal. The meal was very good but I regret not ordering some lumpia to go with it. My friends and I shared some snacks including cheese bread and pandan cake. The pandan cake was sweet and very soft. It even had a subtle flavor of honey to it which I enjoyed. I failed to mention that I actually had an ulterior motive for trying this place, because I had researched ahead of time and found out that they sold biko. Biko is a sweet rice cake from the Philippines that is a bit sticky and it has a subtle sweetness to it. I bought a large circular biko since I did not see any smaller portions of it on the menu. I was happy to discover that the biko I bought tasted just like the small bit-sized pieces I had had before with a delicious latik layering on top. The Trining's menu is HUGE - they have everything from appetizers/snacks, breakfast, a large entree menu, and desserts. Out of everything we've tried here, my family's absolute favorite is their breakfast offerings, the silogs. We are always on the hunt for the best silogs in town and the Trining's tapsilog (the Mira Mesa location specifically, not National City) is the best. We also love their lechonsilog and bangsilog. One of the best parts? They serve breakfast all day. If you are looking to order large servings for potlucks or parties, Trining's is also a great place to order. I've ordered large batches of lumpia here to take to parties. While we mostly enjoy the food here, I will say that the consistency in customer service, speed, and quality of the food is not always there. I've been coming here with my mom and aunt since my early teens, maybe longer, and I remember all the halo halo I've eaten over the years, the trays of lumpia we'd pickup for gatherings (among other things), and having a silog plate after church on Sundays. I tried the longsilog, and I liked the garlic rice. The longanisa would probably be better if it was cooked a little longer since I like mine a little on the burnt side. I wasn't a fan of the leche flan since it was pretty thick and not too creamy but the taste was fine! I also tried the cheese balls and they were just ok. I would come back again to try their other options on the menu since they do have a pretty big menu. The food here is a little on the pricier end though. Trining's Bakery & Cafe is located in Mira Mesa, right next to Target. It's been there for a long time but this was my first time trying them out. I had asked my local Facebook group for recommendations for "Lumpia" in our area. And everyone kept suggesting this place, so I gave them a try. A tray of lumpia (100pc) cost me about $70 which was about average compared to other places. But the quality of the Lumpia was on par with some of the best I have had. When I am not making them myself, this will be our new "got to" spot for cooked lumpia. Since I was there I also picked up a breakfast plate for myself. The longanisa with a fried egg and garlic rice was perfect. It really just tasted like the home cooked meals I grew up with. My sweet Filipino co-worker recommended I try Trinings because it's her favorite. I finally got to try it today and I was impressed! BEST LUMPIA SHANGHAI EVER! (25pcs for $18.75) I'm not Filipino, buuuut I am a huge fan of lumpia, especially to bring to family gatherings/house parties/work potlucks. They're always a hit! Well TRINING'S HAS THE BEST LUMPIA! There, I said it! The wrapper is fried perfectly and crisp, but not oily/greasy. It's delicate and thin. The pork and carrot mixture inside was really tasty. Each lumpia held up really well. Every bite had equal parts meat and wrapper. They were about 5 inches long, so a pretty decent size. I've tried 3 other lumpia spots in the area, and this one is by far the best!! BEST PANCIT BIHON EVER! (Medium size $17.50 but could easily serve 3-4 ppl) There are a variety of different pancit noodles to choose from. I was a bit overwhelmed to be honest because there were no pictures, only Filipino names. I went with the tried and true, thin noodles (Pancit Bihon) and it was BOMB. The pancit here is fully loaded y'all. It has shrimp, vegetables, sausage, and lemons to squeeze into it. You will not be disappointed! Cooked well, not dry, wet, or oily. Literally perfection. PLATE COMBOS ($8.99 to $11.99) There are multiple different plate combos (kind of like Panda-style, where you pick your entree items). The combos usually come with white rice but I think you can sub for pancit for an add'l charge. I tried the garlic pork chop and pork adobo. At first, I was disappointed because the chicken adobo had sold out. BUT OMG- the pork adobo was DELICIOUS. They use fatty pork (almost like pork belly) so the meat was very tender.
