We only came here today because Chao Mami decided to close this Wednesday to enjoy the sun. We were the only people in this restaurant at 11:30 am. Then the people started rolling in after 12. I think everyone came here because chao Mami was unexpectedly closed. The service was terrible . The waitress was disorganized and never came back with stuff we ordered. Then she completely disappeared at one point. Four of us got our food and one person at our table didn't. We kept following up but by the time the food came out, the rest of us were finished. We also ordered vegetarian spring rolls with the last dish and were given pork ones. It took a further 20 min before she got the order of spring rolls. By the time the spring rolls came out, she was finished her meal. I don't think they were expecting the influx of customers and the waitress couldn't handle the volume. The food had a lot of msg- felt very tired and thirsty afterwards. The best part was when the kids came out to help out. We had a young boy of 8 year old asking us how the food was. After 10 years I decided to try this place again to see if it has gotten better. And I am happy to report that it has. Today I had a combo A with beef. This included their salad roll, spring roll, salad and vermicelli. It is the same owners as 10 years ago but this time I came at noon to try them at lunch and the food was good. Decently priced as well. The ambiance is the same as always. Old school wood panelling on the sides, a bunch of tables and chairs on top of carpeting. It's very basic. I can see now that the menu doesn't line up the English names of the food with the price but with the Vietnamese names. Perhaps 10 years ago that is what happened. Regardless I think Triple Coconut has earned at least a 3 star rating all these years later for their food and decent pricing. read more

My usual pho place is closed on Wednesdays, so I decided to try Triple Coconut Tree. I got here at 5pm and there was only one group eating and I came in by myself to have a bowl of noodle soup. The waitress was not very friendly. It was a bit awkward because as a customer, you expect waitresses to be happy to serve you, but she was the opposite. She seemed to hate her job, or bored of it, or something. Anyway, not professional. I ordered a small bowl of rice noodle soup and it came out quick less than 10 minutes! I was impressed! The soup was full of flavour and the rice noodle was standard. However, I did see a strand of hair in my soup halfway through finishing the bowl. Yikes! I lost my appetite and I just got up and paid for it. I debated to say something to the same waitress or not, but it doesn't seem like she is in a mood to hear any complaints that isn't her fault, so I just paid and left. She didn't even say "thank you" or "bye" after I paid. I wish my time here was better. I forgot to take pictures as I was super hungry and lost appetite after seeing hair in my bowl of soup. Maybe it was the dish I ordered. I did not think it was that great. I had the house special in spicy sate broth. I thought it was a bit diluted and the taste was a bit bland. It was not spicy at all, and it lacked oomph to it. The meat was ok, not that much of it in ratio to the rice noodle. Service was so-so, hard to get their attention once the food was served. Delicious, affordable and great portion! We came here for dinner at about 7:30 pm. There were a few people here, no need to wait for seats. We ordered the Vietnam Spring Roll, a Rare Beef and Tripe Rice Noodle Soup, and two other noodle soup. The spring roll is very delicious, with crispy surface and perfect match inside! I thought the food here was really good. Be aware though that it is downmarket dining- cheap, plentiful and good, but little ambiance or high class service. So, come for the food, not to impress a date. Also, beware they don't take credit cards. I have only ever had to wait around 10min to get my order! The staff is friendly and nice. The pho taste quite good! Parking is available everywhere here, and it's FREE. I love Burnaby. Why can't Vancouver be like this?? The inside looks like some guy's house from the 1960s, with (real) wood paneling. It looks more like someone's Whistler cabin. Minus the cedar smell. The furniture looks out of place, as they look like they're from some fancy nearby restaurant that went bust and had a liquidation sale. Service was very friendly. Looks like a mom and pop shop. I had the chicken on rice. Not sure how the Nammers do it, but they always manage to get the chicken just right. Nice and moist. I have no idea why Western places make their chicken dry like sand. I went here with a friend for dinner after we had both run some errands and they suggested this place. They ordered pho while I ordered Combo B (around $11.95), and it was delectable. I ordered grilled pork, which was cooked very well and wasn't tough for me to eat. The Vietnamese spring rolls were very tasty with the sauce (some sort of sesame or peanut sauce), and the prawn and salad with rice noodles were also delicious, especially when you add the clear sauce to it. Vietnamese spring rolls are my favourite and I enjoyed these ones with the nutty sauce as well. The whole combo was very filling, so Combo B isn't for those with a small stomach. The only thing that irked me is that I had to pay cash, but I feel like I got a good price for the amount of food and the quality (the quality was decent I would say). I have not eaten here for probably 3-4 years since moving around. I recently moved into the Hastings area so to my surprise, they were able to deliver through SkipTheDishes! The food is exactly as I remember it being. I ordered a beef ball with rice noodle soup (because it's the only thing I order whenever I have pho) and it is still packed with so much flavour in the broth! And when the noodles soak up that broth, each bite is just a burst of happiness in my mouth. I don't usually do this but I also put a tiny bit of hoisin sauce and sriracha chili (that came with the delivery) in my noodles just for a little extra kick and it just made my bowl even better. Compared to every other place I've had pho, this is by far the best one. I have also ordered the Grilled Lemongrass Chicken with a Pan-Fried Egg on rice during late nights when I have cravings and it absolutely hits the spot every time. I stumbled upon this restaurant one night when i was craving pho and everything was closed except this restaurant. we stopped in and we're immediately seated. the server was direct and to the point. we ordered very quickly and received our food in under 10 minutes. it was absolutely remarkable food. everything on the menu was extremely affordable and came in huge portions that could easily feed two adults. if you're ever in the neighborhood, please consider supporting this incredible restaurant, you will not regret it!! read more

Another nice spot in the Heights of North Burnaby. If you are gluten free, comb the menu and you will find a few gems in the menu - particularly the Combo A (ordered with rice instead of noodles). The Combo A consists of a spring roll, salad roll and a grilled choice of chicken or pork; I chose chicken. Typical of many pho places, the meal was filling and pleasant to the palate! Coconut Tree also offers quick attentive service and good value for your money. If you have only an hour for lunch, this place will not disappoint! One night, I came in for a takeout order (Combo A), and brought in a re-useable container. The price is a bit cheaper than most pho places, but the quality is still there. I got the large house special without the spicy this time, but the spicy version is great too. The broth itself is nice and full of flavor, the tripe is nice and bouncy, but not too chewy. The beef balls are tender and easy to bite with great texture, the brisket is very lean, and the rare beef pretty decent. The noodles are nice and thin and easy to slurp, and if you add in the bean sprouts, jalapeno, sauces, and lime, it's just that much better. Highly recommend this place if you want comfy pho, and just a heads up they only take debit and cash. read more

I cannot write a review about the food. Server was obviously suffering with a bad cold. Sneezing all over the place with not a hanky in sight. Her hand covering her face at least at each sneeze, which was happening frequently. I was watching her closely and she was putting on quite a spectacle.....now why was she even there. As she was bringing me a large bowl of something (I forgot what it was), she let out a big sneeze. So big and right into my bowl. Soup broth came over the sides. She didn't think I saw her as she was coming out of the kitchen. Put it down in front of me and walked away. I absolutely love the balls on her to do this. I got up and walked out. Luckily I didn't touch a thing. I always get a chuckle whenever I walk by this place and think of her. Man, I love a bowl of pho on a surprising cold August day..... Wait why is it cold in summer?? Any who... I ordered a bowl of beef ball and rare beef pho, and some salad rolls. The salad rolls were a bit too chewy for me.. The texture wasn't good. The shrimp didn't have much flavour, and unfortunately, the peanut sauce that came with it did no good, because I'm allergic to peanuts... So far... Maybe 2 stars. But, and this is A BIG BUT.............. The pho that came with it completely turned my 2 star into a 4 star. The noodles were al dente, there were good portions of rare beef, and the beef balls were delicious. It was undoubtedly fresh. The broth, like most pho places, was dark brown. This place legit is the crappiest pho I have ever had in my life. First I ordered the lemon grass chicken and shredded pork on vermicelli. There is wayyy to much vermecelli. The chicken was just okay as i found it kinda dry, the shredded pork was something that i never thought could be shredded pork it was just gross. I had a Vietnamese sandwich and altho the bread is good, the sandwich contained tomatoes which totally ruined the Vietnamese sandwich. Normally there are not tomatoes in a Vietnamese sandwich. And they barely put any pate in the sandwich so it was dry, altho they did have cilantro in the sandwich which I love because cilantro in my opionion makes the sandwich taste alot better. My friemd ordered some chicken wings and they had barely any meat on them and the flavor was alright. She also ordered a soup and the broth kinda tastes a bit dirty. Like fish dirty. I also ordered spring rolls and let me tell you, worst spring rolls in my life. All that was in the spring rolls was pickled carrots and vermecelli. No meat. Nothing else. Very plain. And definately NOT worth the price. Everything here is definately NOT worth the price. And i do not recvommend this place. I recommend Le Petite Saigon as i find that place very reasonable pricing, delicious and it's only a 5 minute walk away. If you want something a bit more pricey than i suggest Broken Rice as this place is very good as well but doesn't have as much variety at Le Petit Saigon. Hot tea and menus as soon as you sit down. Lots of choice on the menu. Very fresh bread for bahn mi sandwiches. Good prices. Cons: Only medium friendly service. And no service after they brought out our good. Had to go to the back counter to pay. Small meat portions even though there's lots of noodles. So it's just ok. Not great, not terrible. Best. Spring rolls. Ever. Now that I got THAT out of the way, I was introduced to this place when one of my best friends twisted my rubber arm into joining her for some pho at her favourite Vietnamese restaurant. I am so happy that she did, because this was easily the best Vietnamese food I've had in a long time. To start, this place may not look particularly impressive when you first walk in, but then again, the best places rarely do. Yes, those ARE fabric Christmas poinsettias flanking the entrance way, and yes, the wood panelling on the walls is incredibly dated, but look closer: there are Vietnamese families eating here, and THAT, my friend, is always a good sign. Taking a cue from my friend, I ordered some spring rolls and a small bowl of rare beef pho. The spring rolls were quickly brought out to us, and as I mentioned above, they were easily the best spring rolls I've EVER eaten. Sure, the usual fillings were there, but they also had this delicious peppery flavour that I haven't found anywhere else. When the pho arrived, I was shocked at how big the small bowl was. Despite being absolutely starving, I could barely eat half of what they had given me, although the deliciousness made me want to eat well beyond the point of personal comfort. The beef was tender, as were the noodles, and the flavours of sweet Thai basil, lime, and exotic spices were to die for. In the end, after two small bowls of pho, and two orders of spring rolls, our bill came to a hair over $20 after tax. I thought that was incredible, considering that we ate like kings. I was quite surprised when I later checked the Yelp reviews, and found them to be abysmal at best. Sure, the service may not have been ultra friendly, but it was prompt and courteous -what more could you want from a place where you can get an massive sit-down meal for $10? You cannot really do fusion with it because Vietnames cuisine is already a fusion of Asian and French, and whatever other country that colonized it. Seriously! What makes Pho amazing is the price. And the cheaper you can find Pho, the more amazing it is. With this place? the price is same as a double quarter pounder meal at McDonalds. Since it's the same price, and you only have an hour for lunch, you have to pick your poison: do you want to smell like Vietnamese food around your co-workers; or do you want Cankles? You pick. Enjoyed my salad rolls and the meat plate with egg on rice was consistent with other Vietnamese restaurants I've tried. The decor is rather dingy but the owner's service accommodated a special request through some language effort ,and we were pleased with our food when it came. And it was served so quickly. We'll definitely go back, which is always a compliment to the establishment. What we tried for the first time, since the weather today was so hot, were their iced drinks. Mine was with red beans and green coconut jello pieces and condensed milk and my son had lychees in syrup water on ice. Both were delicious. Will definitely go back. You can definitely find better elsewhere in Burnaby. If you come here, i recommend that you get the meat and rice dishes instead. Those are pretty decent, and they come with a fried egg on top! Yummy! THE BEST THING: their banh mi!!! Now i know to only order about 3 sandwiches to go. My favorite is the pork or beef, but theyre all delicious. I've driven by this place on numerous occasions (it used to be a Chinese fast-food restaurant) and finally decided to pay it a visit since no other pho restaurants nearby seemed to be open at 10pm on a Wednesday night. Thankfully this place closes at 11pm. As usual, I order a large bowl of pho. Surprisingly, for a large bowl, the proportions looked a lot smaller than what I'm used to seeing at other pho restaurants. If I hadn't known it was a large, I would've easily mistaken it for a small bowl. The soup was nothing special. In all fairness, it was late and I was one of the last customers that night. I will return one day and hopefully I'll have a more positive experience. Street parking is available but the usual "no parking during weekdays from 3-6pm" applies. read more

Hmmm......This place reminds me of restaurants in the early 90's. My first question was why is this place called Coconut Tree? Its not Thai food! Co-co-nut, co-co-nut. I got my small Pho for 8$ and it tasted like any other good ol' Pho (hey it rhymes). I also got a spring roll for 3.99$ which I thought was a good deal although i have to mention that it is a smaller spring roll. It comes with sprouts and mint leaves and a lime and they were all very yummy to me. The place wasn't busy on a Thursday night, maybe just two tables. They also have specials with pictures posted on walls such as wings for 5.99$, curry rice etc...but do i really want curry rice at a Pho place? Maybe not. Sometime when my boyfriend and I dont go there for a while the waitress will always ask where have we been. I like this place because it tastes alright and is pretty cheap, but I'm not in love with it. It was pretty empty when I went, at around 6:30 on a Monday. We ordered the curry vegetable rice noodle soup and a satay rice noodle, which I can't remember which satay noodle we actually ordered because beef pho (looked like the house special) landed on our table. My friend didn't mind so we didn't bother pointing it out. The pho soup was pretty good, it was exactly what pho normally tastes like. My curry soup was also average which was pretty much what I was expecting. They gave lots of broccoli, which was nice. We also got the lychee on ice and young coconut water. The lychee came straight out of a can, which I was not surprised about since its out of season. I quite enjoyed my coconut drink as it was refreshing and had soft, plump, coconut slices. All in all, I would come back for a cheap meal or if I was really craving any pho. read more
