One of the OG restaurants (if not THE OG) in Horseshoe Bay. Been around since 1946. Parking is available behind the building, as well on the various village side streets. The building is definitely on the older side. Lots of wood trim. Reminds me of an old dock. The seating area is L shaped, and largely fits around the outer edge of the building (the restaurant is on a corner lot). Great view of the park and water. Staff are friendly and cheerful. As my friends and I were only here for a beer, I can't comment on the food. Pricing looked pretty reasonable, and I've heard good things about this place from friends. Look. It's just not my kinda place. I'm not gonna knock it. I know it's a family business and I know it's been there a million years, so I'm gonna try and be as nice as possible. But, still accurate. Ok..... The House Salad with Chicken. The Chicken was tasty. There was just not enough of it. Especially considering added chicken was $8. Not an Entree size and certainly not filling. The rest of the ingredients were so underwhelming. Barely any beats, a few tomatoes and just a heap of shredded carrots over a bed of greens. So very basic for an $18 salad without the chicken. The 2-piece Cod and Chips. The actual battered fish was nice. But....uhhmmm....I think either some of the fries must've fell off our plate on its way to our table, or someone helped themselves with our fries (see pic.) When a dish is called Fish n Chips. Guess what? The highlight is what? ..........The Fish AAANNNDD The Chips. There you go..... Ok. At this point I was ready to go. So, I went to the ladies room and that's where the horror started. Ambiance and Decor: Very homey, they haven't changed the interiors for the past 20+ years. Try to sit outside the patio on a sunny day, if not try to get a banquet seat at the front of the restaurant so you can have a view of the water and the ferries coming in. Service Quality: Friendly staff, but you'll need to stop them if you need anything. Menu Variety: The only thing to order here is the fish and chips - you can never go wrong here. Food Presentation: Its put on the plate, what else can you ask for here. Food Taste and Quality: Great crispiness on the fish. Their fries are batch fried so just hope that your chips are fresh and warm with your fish. Portion Sizes: Large portions - worth the money for sure. The bowls of chowder can fill you up. Price and Value: A bit pricey just for one piece of fish - but always worth a stop whenever you're in the Horseshoe Bay area. Came here on a rainy chilly Friday morning at 9am before heading up to Whistler. The restaurant feel is eclectic, cozy and welcoming. Has a very cabin and coastal feeling. Lots of open seating - the server Cass was super friendly and provided amazing service. We ordered hot black tea and a hot chocolate with whipped cream (of course). Both drinks were piping hot - which I love! I got the Spa ish Omelette and my Fiancé ordered the Two Egg Special with an extra egg. Both dishes were great. Hit the spot before a long drive. Popped in Monday morning around 8am for breakfast with my granddaughter. Greeted quickly, told we could sit where we liked, so headed to a booth by the window. Lots of customers already seated on the patio. I can honestly say they take good of you at Troll's. More than one server came by quickly to see if we wanted coffee. We didn't, but I am sure those who are gasping for their morning Joe really appreciate the prompt service. Lots of options on the menu but we both chose the two-egg breakfast ($18) with choice of egg style; bacon, sausage or ham; potatoes; two slices of whole wheat or sourdough toast. Within a very few minutes our meals arrived, fresh and hot and exactly as we ordered them. Two fried eggs over easy, sourdough buttered toast, lovely cottage fried potatoes and 4 slices of bacon! It was delicious and plentiful and very much appreciated. I wish I'd asked our server her name because she did a lovely job. Welcoming, friendly, got our order right and made sure we had what we needed. The kind of waitress who actually seems to enjoy her job and her customers. I have been to Troll's many, many times over many years and never been disappointed. Food is always good, (fresh and hot), great fish and chips, friendly service, lovely views out to Horseshoe Bay. We've been eating at Troll's for at least 40 years- always a favourite. But our visit 3 days ago was a disappointment- in the ferry lineup so we ordered takeout. Our order sat at reception about 6 feet away from me. No one called my name; I looked and identified it myself. Paid, took it to our car and...no pop, no kids' milk as ordered (and paid). Too late to go back. Lady ahead of me was missing juice she'd ordered. I've heard rumours that Troll's has been sold. If so it's not for the better. Tip: don't order takeaway. Our party of 18 dined at Trolls for lunch. We didn't have a reservation and chanced upon getting a table. After 5 minutes, we were seated in 3 tables of 6 which was perfect. Our waiter was attentive and we got our food in a reasonable amount of time. Just as any big party, there's always one who does not get their food with the rest of the group. Luckily, it was only a sandwich and it came shortly after. The food is ok and the service good. The place is quaint and location perfect in HorseshoeBay. This is the 3rd time I've been here while waiting for the ferries and it just gets worse..... my bro and I had the crab cake hash brown bowl and it turned out to be more like dry falafel pucks on potato wedges covered in crazy thick hollandaise sauce, it was dry, probably not even crab and $25 bucks. I'm a pretty good cook and when a garnish is literally two threads of green onion, that's sad. On top of this, the server spent 20 minutes talking to her friend and the end of the patio while we all waited for coffee and cutlery, I literally got the coffee jug my self and topped everyone up. We've been to Trolls a couple times a long time ago so were looking forward to the fish and chips they were known for. Should have read the recent reviews first. The cod was mushy, almost nonexistent, and the batter was dangerously raw on the inside. The fries were ok but had probably been sitting awhile. The floors were sticky. I think they hired half the high school so should have someone pushing a mop. The service was excellent, which was the only bright spot. Wish I had gotten her name. read more

We came here to get breakfast and I ended up getting the "Fisherman's Breakfast" which had scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. I found everything to be a bit dry especially the hash browns and bacon. Walked in around 2pm on a Sunday... The front hosts didn't acknowledge me when I walked in so I did have to wait a couple of minutes before they finally acknowledge the fact that I was there, took down my name and then I got seated right away. We were told to leave our stroller by the entrance and that the staff would keep an eye on it for us. We got a booth by the window so we had a nice view when we had our lunch. They gave us the menus and a kids menu (coloring page) for us, some water and a closed lid kids water. Their menu was quite extensive but since the name of the restaurant contains fish and chips, that was exactly what we ordered. We got the cod fish & chips, cod burger, kids halibut & chips, and also their white clam chowder. The cod fish & chips was actually really delicious. The batter to fish ratio was perfect. Their fries were plain but it was good after we added some salt & pepper. The kids halibut & chips ($16) was basically one adult sized piece of fish with fries. So it was very worth it! The halibut was very soft, flaky and fresh. The kids meal also included a children drink as well as an ice cream cone for dessert. The cod burger ($19) was a giant piece of cod inside a burger with lettuce, tomato, onion & pickles. That was also very good too. I quite enjoyed the clam chowder ($15 for entree size) , although I did have to add some salt to it. But better under salted than over salted so everyone can customize it to their taste! For being such a Horseshoe Bay establishment (70 years!!), I was really disappointed by my experience here. My group and I (party of 5) went on a Saturday at around 2pm, and we were seated fairly promptly. The wait once we were inside, however, was a different story. I think it was really understaffed for how many customers there were for a sunny Saturday afternoon. We spent more time trying to find our server for our orders and bills than sitting, eating, and enjoying ourselves. I don't give low ratings often, but the main reason I had to this time is because two of my friends got sick after eating two different seafood dishes from here, one of them being Joe's fish stew. Everything we ordered tasted pretty mediocre, and to feel awful after that only added to our poor experience. I hope Trolls spends a little more time on quality control, because with its prime location and bustling family restaurant vibe, it truly could have been a worthwhile visit. read more

Troll's is self proclaimed home to the best fish and chips in Horseshoe Bay. The windows overlook majestic views which adds to theoe charm. We tried the halibut and cod fish and chips. The dish came with coleslaw and tartar sauce. The portions were great considering each piece was about 19 bucks. However, I feel this place is a touristy place because after the first bite you will realize that the fish is not extraordinary tasting. Hell! The outside batter was not even crunchy. The fries were good though. An unexpected find at this place was the long island iced tea. I have never been a big fan of it but they had one of the most delicious LIIT I have ever had. With the Troll Family still in charge, you can feel that it has a certain charm to it, it is hard nowadays to maintain a small family business as big corporate chains are everywhere! Service is always friendly and staffs are cheerful, we were seated in the back room where there is a bit more calm, as the front end and the patio seats are where the action usually is, after our coffee & tea arrived, our lunch came soon; I ordered the legendary Joe's Fish Stew and D had his favourite Ocean Club, both were presented well, and the plates were warm to the touch. My Fish Stew was full to the brim with Salmon, Bay Shrimps, Bay Scallops, and of course the two hand peeled prawns hanging over the bowl! The Ocean Club was well made but I would prefer a bit more mayo in the Shrimp mixture, overall, the food standard is the same over the years, and I am sure this is what the diehard fans like about this place!! The servers are genuinely delightful. With regard to the food, I normally order the grilled salmon with vegetables. The several times I have dined at Trolls for dinner I've order the same item. I've noticed a few hours after enjoying the meal, I have an after taste of metal each time. It seems the salmon must be farmed. Metals are rather toxic to consume, causing inflammation to the nervous system when of high quantities. Maybe not the best choice from their menu. read more

We stopped by here about a month ago while we were waiting for our ferry to depart for namaino for breakfast. This cute little diner was the perfect place to chill and to get some last minute grub that would have been on par price point and yet better imho than the food you can purchase on the ferry ! I ordered the BELT sandwich on sourdough and let me tell you it was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I ever had !!!. I ordered house clam chowder and haddock fish and chips as both were recommended by the server. Clam chowder was average. Just run of mill chowder you can get at any seafood place. Haddock fish and chip were OK but bland. Both fries and fish could have been more crispy. Coleslaw was not good at all. It came in a tiny little paper cup and looked as awful as it tasted. The restaurant itself was crowded and the wait would be at least half an hour just for the food, aside from the wait for a table. So we decided to get take-out instead. The take-out counter is just outside the restaurant, next to it. I ordered the fish and chip combo which would include a drink for just 50 cents more. It was cod and made to order. I liked it. It was fresh and tasty, even the chips were crispy and nice. Perfect with the tartar sauce and ketchup. I also had the white chowder which was the usual cream based. Troll's has been an iconic restaurant located in Horseshoe Bay for many generations. It's something that they pride on. It's the place I grab take out while waiting to get on a ferry or when I'm feeling like fish and chips. The take out window is closed at this time and won't be opening up until at least next summer according to one of the serving staff. It means that any take out is subject to dine in prices. I paid $48 in total for a two piece halibut meal and one piece halibut meal. Kinda brutal when you know it would be much cheaper through the take out window, which has been a casualty of COVID-19. Hard to blame the restaurant but it's still a tough pill to swallow. The food is good. The halibut usually comes with some coleslaw but didn't see any in the takeout package. I'm not a vinegar kind of guy so I missed the coleslaw. The coleslaw adds a bit of freshness to break through the greasy fish and chips. Wish they had a side that helped with the greasiness of it. Would go well with some off dry Riesling to get rid of the greasiness. I don't think I'll drop by until again until COVID-19 is over though. Take out is great right before you get on the ferry. Take out is great to eat while sitting on a bench at Horseshoe Bay Park. I personally don't like the inside of the restaurant as it's dated and comes off as a diner. 40 minutes for Crab Dip! On a super rainy stormy afternoon I ordered one crab dip take-out, thinking it would be quick. There was one order in front of me, who got their order and left. It was 40 minutes later after me bugging the poor Take-out window worker that my order came. It was 1:00 in the afternoon on a weekday, and I could see there were people inside but it wasn't super busy - only a few people went in in that time. After a fun visit to Whytecliff Park, we headed to nearby Horseshoe Bay to grab some lunch and wound up at Troll's. It's hard to miss this popular eatery as it's located right on the corner of Bay Street and Royal Avenue. We were actually thinking of grabbing a light lunch so we ordered the Troll's Chowder ($12 for the entrée size) and the Cod and Chips ($17 for 2 pieces + additional $6 for 2 pieces of fried oysters). Much to our surprise, when the food arrived at our table, we were taken aback by how large the soup and fish pieces were. The picture really doesn't do it justice as it's difficult to comprehend how huge the bowl of soup was. Not only was the bowl of chowder huge, it was chunky and chock full of things like baby clams and double-smoked bacon. You can get this as either white or red chowder and we picked Manhattan which turned out very creamy and not overly tomatoey. The batter on the cod and oysters was light and crisp which kept kept everything inside nice and juicy. They say that their fish and chips is "famous" and I won't disagree with them. Underneath the generous portions of seafood, you've got a bed of addictive fries with a light crispness on the outside. Is this place a bit of a tourist trap? The service was very friendly and the food came fast, although it did take quite a while to find our server to ask for our check. The fish was good, but for me it did lack a bit on flavor. The seating was a bit tight in the back section we were in, but the location was great and we found free parking fairly easy nearby.
