My wife and kids wanted to go to Troll's for fish and chips but also to celebrate the beginning of summer. We both wanted salmon and chips but wanted to ensure the salmon was wild and not farmed. The menu wasn't much help and the server didn't know so she checked with the cook. She was told the salmon was wild. Once served we began eating but something wasn't right. The fish was grey rather than pink. Our plates were sent back assuming we had been served haddock or cod or maybe old catfish. The plates came back to our table again but the story had changed. It wasn't salmon but "steelhead salmon." Well steelhead is not a species of salmon, it is trout which spawns as salmon do. Our server vanished. I ate a piece and drank my wine. When the server returned I explained the fish identification issue. This time the very cold steelhead made it's final voyage to the kitchen, never to be seen again. We were given refunds for our meals. Kids ate their burgers and were satisfied. This is not a place to troll for fish and chips. Go to the Fish Counter on Main St. in Vancouver if you want fish and chips. Sadly the view in Horseshoe Bay is a mess now with an enormous wall of condos. It was so disappointing to go here today and see the place that, for decades, has been the bedrock of the community. The interior front-of-the-house was filthy which leads me to question how clean the kitchen was. There were crumbs and hair on the seat, which I wiped away. The women's bathroom was the same. I doubt it had been properly cleaned in a very long time. My spoon was dirty. The table was sticky and someone really needed to vacuum the carpet. (Someone should explain to the owners why carpets aren't the best option in restaurants in general). I took my friend for her birthday lunch. She had halibut and chips, I had the Trolls Spring Salad and a single piece of cod. The salad description is as follows, "Candied pecans, cranberries, grape tomatoes and feta cheese dressed in a balsamic reduction". There were lots of pecans and dried cranberries, a delicious balsamic reduction, and fresh greens, but almost no feta. The tomatoes seemed out of place. The cod batter was over seasoned and greasy. The food here used to be good. Perhaps, with the passing of Gary Troll, standards have slipped. I'm not sure. But I was very disappointed with the quality of food and the general cleanliness. I have been going through and past Horseshoe Bay for about 40 years. Troll's would always be a great spot to stop on the way back and have some fish and chips. This last year my family stopped on the way back from the Sunshine Coast. The food and service at Troll's was slowly getting worse over the years and this year it pretty well reached bottom. Not busy at all but had to constantly chase after the waitress for stuff. Never came back for refills or anything. Kid's meals were supposed to have drinks and dessert, chased the waitress for desert, had to chase the manager for the drinks as we were leaving and they were out of things like milk. One of my family's old favorites, and I could not be more disappointed. We were seated promptly with quite a number of open tables, and our order was taken quickly. Unfortunately, that's as good as it got. Our food arrived after about 45 minutes, with other tables that arrived later being served before us. We ordered two clam chowders. One was fine, but the other was hard to describe. It didn't have any actual soup, it was just remnants of tasteless mushy vegetables. My wife took one bite and had passed it to me. It's like they scraped out the bottom of an old pot after draining out the liquid. For the first time in many years, we sent it back, and I moved to my burger. One bite into this dry, tough, lukewarm disaster and I wondered how this could be considered an actual burger. The only explanation I could think of, was that the store bought patty was microwaved some time in the afternoon, and assembled into a burger several hours after being forgotten and rediscovered. It's not clear if an attempt was made to reheat it, or whether it was just warmer in the kitchen from which it came. The second of four meals went back right past who turned out to be the manager, but she didn't care. In hindsight, this explained the new standard of food quality. Onto the calamari. This staple deep fried delight showed up ready to share, but there was something wrong, there was no tzatziki sauce. Turns out they ran out, and just decided we could do without it. Onto the fish pie. The piece de resistance, the reason we drove all the way out. Somebody had to be enjoying this meal... but no. My mother bravely ate through half of the dry, fishy (old tasting) entree before giving up. Too reluctant to send back the third meal, she asked for a doggy bag. You're probably wondering why take it home? We've got a puppy who so far will eat anything. This could give us a run for our money though. We asked for the bill and spoke briefly to our server. He was efficient, polite, and apologetic. When faced with some of our questions, he didn't really have much to say... I mean how could he? We asked whether the lady wandering around the restaurant who we tried to flag down twice was the manager. Turns out she was. I'm not sure if she eats at work, but I would suggest she stay away from the burgers, the fish pie, the chowder and the calamari. I don't know why people are complaining about Troll's because they have some the best Fish and Chips in the Lower Mainland. Troll's has big pieces of freshly caught fish and I love their french fries that comes with the dish. Their fish and chips, in my honest opinion, totally beats Go Fish in Vancouver next to Granville Island. Troll's is cool because you can eat inside the Nautical inspired restaurant or order outside from a takeout window. There are benches at the park beside the restaurant. I'm in Horseshoe Bay on a Friday night waiting for the ferry, very hungry, and nearly every restaurant is either closed or closing. If Trolls was open until the last ferry left, we would all be sitting in your restaurant ordering appies and drinks to pass the time...I feel like this is a huge missed opportunity. Went to troll for the second time in two weeks and once again the food was well presented but lacked flavor and any taste at all. The service is good and our server was polite. We have gone to Trolls for the past 20 years and the food seems to be getting blander and just passable more and more. Super busy but only half hour wait for food to be delivered. Fries were cold and batter on fish was soggy and also cold. Trolls used to be a decent restaurant. I was there recently despite reading some negative reviews here on Yelp. 1) The service was slow, and it wasn't even that busy. 2) Once finally served it took forever just to get my Iced Tea. Other tables around me were served even though they ordered after me. 3) Finally, after waiting more than 30 minutes for my order, and watching those tables around me get their food first I summoned the waiter and asked politely what happened to my order? The waiter frantically checked his computer screen, checked with the kitchen, then his computer screen again. He then bold faced lied to me and said that a big order had come in and that was why my order was delayed. I gave the waiter a second chance to change his story - but he lied again. He further said that he would go talk to the manager to do something.....but all he did was go serve another table!!!I got up and walked out. I will never go to Troll's again. I will tell all who will listen to not go to Troll's. Service was disgusting!!! Waiter lied to my face Food never came. NEVER AGAIN! TROLLS is terrible. Terrible service today, waited over 40 minutes for our food and had literally two minutes left to eat it when it finally came because we had to board a ferry. The hostess said we definitely had enough time. Not once did the server say anything, no "sorry! The kitchen is running behind" no NOTHING. Then when we got our bill which we had to pay before we ate, they didn't take anything off the bill for the horrendous service. Our dinner was ruined and we tried to just pay for the drinks since the food was not coming, but it came right after we asked that. Is it possible to be given zero stars? Amazing this place is still in business. Actually it was packed. First time there in over 15years. I was shocked it was worse than before. My 11 year old called the chicken strips chicken bricks. Fortunate he didn't break any teeth. I told the waitress the chicken was over cooked and she explained they don't want anyone to get sick.
