Came in here yesterday because all the fish stores in Burbank don't seem to carry bamboo shrimp anymore. I was pleasantly surprised to find rows upon rows of tons of different kind of fish, and shrimp. They all seemed very healthy despite some dead fish laying in the bottoms of some tanks which look like they have been dead for a couple days. I was quickly greeted and helped to find a very nice, BIG, bamboo shrimp and a snail. The place was a bit hectic, but maybe I just came at a busy time. This place is the bees knees. I had a goldfish tank for years that I wanted to totally redo. I brought the fish here and started to stock up. Every question I had they answered and more. When I have something in sight I can get very detail oriented about it especially when it comes to animals that I would prefer not to murder in mass. I did a little research before getting my daughter a fish tank but the staff here was very patient with me in describing the nitrogen cycle and getting me everything I needed to get the tank running well. There were times when I came in with a water sample ready to buy fish and they advised me against it in favor of getting my water chemistry right. This is a fantastic pet store run by the most kind, knowledgeable and helpful people! My son got a leopard gecko and needed tons of supplies. I had no clue whatsoever what to get and of course I didn't want to disappoint my teenage son. I am an avid reptile and aquarium keeper and I hate this place. It began with my first reptile, I wanted a leopard gecko and I figured it would be better to support my local shop versus petco. I had passed by many times having lived in Glendale most of my life but had never been inside. Well that was my first mistake. I was sold a 10 gallon tank for $50, a HEAT LAMP with bulb ~$30, and a scrawny leopard gecko ~$40. I was an amateur and I made the mistake of taking their guidance on proper leopard gecko husbandry. I mean they had a few they would know, right??? Leopard geckos DO NOT NEED heat lamps. They REQUIRE BELLY HEAT. A 10 gallon is $15 at petco ($10 when its on sale). You do not sell a skinny leopard gecko to an amateur with the inproper set up!! Its just inhumane!! Needless to say he didnt eat, and for weeks I tried feeding him coming in over and over and asking the employees what could be wrong and buying different insects to try. I learned, online, they require belly heat, bought a heat mat and switched him over. His growth was stunted and if I hadnt made the switch he surely would have died. I now have two leopard geckos, a crested gecko, and a ball python. They are not hobbyists they are salesmen. If you dont know your stuff they will rip you off. I continued to stop there for feeder insects like worms and crickets as I used to think their prices were okay because they were better then petco. I shouldve learned my lesson haha I came is asking if they carried silkworms, the gentleman with the curly hair said, of course buddy!! He pulled out some waxworms and sold them to stupid old me! After going home and googling pictures of silk worms as they do look quite similar to waxworms I realized i had been dooped. My ego held me from going back and returning them but I didnt learn my lesson!! On another occasion I was there looking for super worms. The convo with the curly hair gentleman went like this Me : Hi do you have superworms? Him : Yes buddy (pulls out mealworms) Me: no SUPERworms Him: Ohh superworms nono buddy but I can order them for you! HAAAH not this time!!!! Anyways be careful at this place do your research at home. Its convenient, theyve got good prices on mice and crickets and some fish and their saltwater section is not bad but they will hustle you at any sign of weakness! read more

This is a good Mom and Pop fish store with a wide variety of fresh water fish and a salt water section. They are lacking corals so you will need to go somewhere to purchases those. The prices are competitive in terms of the fish but like most fish stores, if you want to buy supplements, fixtures etc.. you are better off buying them cheaper on-line. The individuals who work there will gladly work with you in getting the best fish for your aquarium and also give you some insight on how to take care a certain species. Regardless, whenever I am in a mood to purchase a new african cichlid I come here, Bob's tropical, or another random fish store. Tropical Imports is a great place for beginner aquarium owners. Chris was super helpful to my girlfriend and I when we were trying to find our fish answers. We bought an aquarium and have been trying to decide fresh water or salt water. The information we got has us leaning towards buying the salt water fish. They seem the most colorful and beautiful i.e. Nemo and Dory fish. Unfortunately we have to wait to situate our tank with salt water which will take from one month to three months. But with all the tips and info from Chris and another employee I think we have a good place to start and all thanks to Tropical Imports. read more

When we walked in, the store worker (A bald man in his 40s maybe) wasn't wearing a mask until we approached him. He then made us wait five min so he couldn't finish moving a hose. We then had a few questions about our fish to which he had very condescending answers to. While we were asking questions he took off his mask because he thought it was ok behind the counter, which it wasn't. Then when we thanked him for his input, we decided not to buy anything and consider our options to which he said very rudely, "So your not gonna buy anything". He never deserved our business from the start and that comment forced us out the door. If you want poor customer service, overpriced items and COVID potentially, come here. This place has a good variety of fish and coral at a really good price but and this is why I would give 3 stars instead of 4 or 5, its because the employees are terrible. Their knowledge or maybe they just didnt care meant them selling me things that were not compatible. If you know what you are doing I would recommend this shop but if you are a beginner to tropical tanks like me don't come here because they won't be of any help at all. I've been to this store many times and have actually purchased most my stuff from here. They have a great selection and the prices are reasonable. When my husband and I came in the owner was very nice and even helped us out. Now the reason why I have a three star instead of the four or five is because of the workers. Now as many of you mentioned the older guy that cleans the tank is very nice. For the younger ones, they're very inconsistent. My husband and I were standing there for at least 30 minutes waiting for someone to come help. Nothing! We were the only ones inside btw. We even gave glances to make sure they know we were waiting. When we finally got help, my hubby asked some questions pertaining to how well certain fishes will get along with the ones in our tank. His answer was "they'll be fine." Sadly it was not fine. I really like this store and hopefully will come back again but please be nice to your customers. And if you don't know the answer then say so. I would rather have an honest answer than find out the hard way later. It's a complete waste of money and time. read more

I had a really awful week long battle with a previous fish supply store that left me in tears (located in Burbank, won't name but you can check my recent reviews to see the negative post) I came to Tropical Imports the other day and met Dean, I told him my whole experience and he listened patiently. He spent at least half an hour with me going over fish and tank care in full detail, I finally felt like someone cared about me and the well being of these creatures. I ended up leaving with a whole new set of water conditioners and bacterias the works, no fish. I got my tank all set up and went back a couple days later to pick up a gold fish. Dean was there and he helped me pick my out my new little guy and even contacted me the following day to see how my new guy was doing! Fish is happy, I am ecstatic and I cannot wait to pick up my other fish that I already have on hold! Thrilled! And if you don't feel like reading this epic novel just take my word for it and stop by. I've been coming here for a good couple of months, ever since I started my hobby in aquarium keeping, and this lfs is in my top 3 that I visit in my weekly missions. I make sure I come down here every other week, just in case something beautiful gets dropped off in their shipments of freshwater fish, or even aquatic plants. These guys even have a small reptile section which contains a couple of cute sulcata turtles, my girl and I have had our eyes for about 2 months now. Unfortunately she owns a rabbit, that takes up most of her time so those turtles will sadly have to wait. Their saltwater section is vast and is also constantly containing a variety of fish every week or so, (most of the stock which I'm not fairly familiar with, because I've never done a saltwater setup). However; if I would ever set one up, this is the place I would come too first for any advice, and recommendation. The staff is minimum, but their knowledge of their stock outweighs that fact superbly. I mean, it's so hard to find quality service in a live stock business, especially when the number one question that's asked when purchasing a fish is: "Will this harm my other fish?" These guys know their stuff, and when in doubt, there honest about it. What really makes me a repeat customer isn't much to say there stock, but the fact that all my questions that I bring to this store are answered, and if they by any chance don't have any idea, they simply tell me so, with no hassle. If your close by and you really want to liven up that freshwater/saltwater tank up, or even have any questions, drop on by and you won't be disappointed. They may also do orders, so to say, but it all comes down to whether or not their suppliers have them. I'm still in the loop with their suppliers for a couple of L-128's (Blue Phantom Plecos), and I'm confident enough to know that these guys will be able to find some. read more

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I went to return the fish today and they took them back no problem. They apologized for the inconvenience and informed me that the clerk who helped me was only a week into the job. The person who helped me today was much more knowledgable and I really appreciate their customer service. FIVE STARS for today but yesterday's encounter brings it down to four. THIS IS A REVIEW OF A SINGLE INTERACTION ONLY. JUST BE AWARE. Helpful? YES!! Knowledgable? NO!! Wide selection? YES!! Great for anyone who's not a fish expert? NO!! The three stars was earned only because of the wide selection they had. Everything you could possibly think of and amazingly priced tanks. Big sizes, small prices. A+ for that guys. Way to not fall into the realm of the corporate big wigs. However there NEEDS to be more education for your employees. And if they are not sure of an answer, I would prefer them ask their superiors than make up an answer. Alright so here's the story. I have a new 29 gallon tank. A few weeks ago I got 6 neon tetras from Petsmart. They're these little tiny silver and red fish that are completely peaceful. I went in looking for some cool fish to add to my tank. So in the very dimly lit fish area, there was 3 big walls of sort of lit up fish tanks PACKED with tropical fish (I don't know how many are supposed to be in a tank but there was A LOT and they all seemed to be freaking out). A huge selection, but with very little description, written in wet erase marker on the tanks in illegible handwriting. Still I was hopeful, many hole in the wall shops that look like this turn out great quality products. I didn't even know where to start. So after gazing aimlessly for 15 minutes and turning down help from the helpful clerk who continued to ask if I needed it, I conceded and met his offer for help. I told him the whole story and asked which fish he thought would make a nice addition to the tank. Most importantly, I asked which fish were not aggressive, as I wanted to ensure the safety of the neon tetras I already had. His response was seemingly helpful. "All of the fish on this wall are tropical community fish, so they'll all get along." "They're not aggressive?" "No, they should be fine" So I picked out two bigger fish that I thought were cool looking. I asked once again if they were peaceful and he replied affirmatively. One of the fish I picked out was a big grey silver dollar fish. I asked if there was anything special I needed to know about him. Like, does he eat different food? Do I need anything else in the tank? Will he be ok by himself? He replied telling me that he should be fine under the given circumstances. The other fish was a golden gourami. Same questions, same answers. I get home, let the bags float for a while, then transfer the two fish into the tank. All seems to be going well for the first stretch of time. Except something seemed off about the silver dollar fish. He was just kind of sitting in the corner. He seemed scared or something. Later on I noticed that the gourami nibbling at the silver dollar and chasing him around the tank. "That's odd" I thought. I decided to do a little research on the gourami. It turns out the staff was wrong. Gourami are actually semi aggressive fish, the second level of aggressiveness. It seems like it's not too big a deal but in reality it means that this fish could potentially kill the rest of my fish!! Immediately removed him from the tank. I decided to do some research on the silver dollar as well, since now I didn't trust what the clerk said. As it turns out, silver dollar fish are meant to be kept in schools of 4 or more, or they become petrified and often will not move. I plan to return both fish tomorrow, a total of $30 (O.K. prices but not great, petco is cheaper) In short, the staff may be helpful, but some of them can turn out to be anything but. BEWARE: DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!! read more

A lot packed into a small store. I have been to a lot of fish stores in the past six years of owning a nano 12 gallon and 65 gallon saltwater tank, as well as a 20 gallon fresh, and a fresh water pond. I own everything from anemones and fish to newts , frogs, and aquatic turtles. I recently moved and had to find a new store that can provide for all my critters' needs. I saw the Yelp reviews and decided to give this place a try. I had the opportunity to meet Jaime who was busy opening the store but took the time to greet me, and listen to my needs. He provided a tour of the store which like I said, is small but packs a punch. I was able to get my saltwater, silversides, and various maintenance items I needed due to the move. I was surprised to find that they also have other items and was able to pick up crickets for my reptiles too. Jaime is great and if it had not been for him, I would have been in and out in less than five. Since he was able to show me everything I spent quite a bit and will definitely be back. I am waiting for a call from the store owner to let me know about the in home servicing they do. I have been waiting for a few days, and will update once I hear back from him. read more

The entire staff was super nice and went WAY out of their way to make sure I had all my questions answered and that I had everything I needed. Now that is just the beginning. I came in with a credit slip that was two years old. My wife had bought me a gift certificate here that I waited WAY too long to use. It even said on the credit slip that it expired in one year from the date. I went in thinking it was a slim chance they would honor the credit, and because it clearly said that it expired already my expectations were low. However I spoke with Dean who I believe may be the owner or at least the manager, and he took care of me. I was blown away at the level of professionalism and the compassion he had for me and my money/credit situation. This place is the worst place to go to for anything! I bought a 360 fish tank here for 60+ tax bought some nice fish that were a little over priced.. I also came back the next day and bought a 15 gallon for 200 plus fish, heater, etc ended up paying 500 for the tank and all.. Two weeks later my 360 tank breaks down and all my fish die. I take it back to the store and ask what is the return policy because I just lost all my fish while At work.. the kid working there doesn't know the policy and has to call the owner the owner says he's out of town and can't do anything. I have to wait for him to come back in a week. Not only was this a huge inconvenience come to find out all of there tanks are over priced I suggest you go to petco I found the same tanks for wayyy less! The 60 dollar tank is 30 at petco! In all worst place to go to they will take your money fast and won't help you when stuff breaks down! Plus everything is over priced! Trust me I don't write bad reviews but do yourself a favor and go to Petco first! You get the lowest price, best qaulity, and returns for anything that doesn't work or breaks! They prices are decent not horribly expensive but not cheap either 3. The quality of the fishes are 7/10. 4. Aquarium and Accessories are EXPENSIVE~ I usually only go here for fish food if it was an emergency. Never bought any high quality fishes here because 1. It's overpriced and 2. it's Overpriced. 3. Let me start off by saying this used to be one of my favorite stores to go to when I had a reef tank . There used to be an Armenian guy that would always help me . So what happened was four years ago I was moving and where I was moving to there wasn't room for my tank I had to tear it down and keep it in the storage so when I did tear down my tank I took all my fish to the store that I got it from I gave it to them so they can give me credit I gave it to the same Armenian guy they used to help me he was working there that day I told him I don't need any money just give Credit and they were very fine with that and he agreed he would give me credit so now that I have my reef tank set up and I have gone through the cycle I am ready to put fish in my tank I surely went back to the store that I used to always buy fish from and guess what there was a young guy working there I told him about my credit that I had with the store and he said there is nothing he can do about it . Wow so when the guy gave me credit he wrote on the back of the receipt the fish that I brought which was one yellow thang to snow clowns one angel one fox face And blood shrimp also my turbo snails that I don't care about if they didn't give me credit on I just can't believe that years ago I've spent thousands of dollars with this store and now that I'm starting back in the hobby again I was finally able to buy a house I set up my tank and this is how their old customer gets treated by the way all the fish that they were supposed to give me credit for I've bought all of them from them if I can give them a zerostarI would don't spend your money in this fish store they don't even care about their customers I own a business and the number one thing that I care for is my customers and always keeping them happy .
