Grilled Catch of the Day Fish Sandwich* Don't see any fish in this sandwich? Neither did I taste any!
    Bill C.

I think this place stays open because it's good enough for hotel dining. I got the grilled catch of the day sandwich, which was Mahi Mahi. Worst fish sandwich ever. Well, it was mostly a cole slaw sandwich with a small fish square in it. The bun was huge. The cole slaw itself was very bland.

Went here two separate occasions during our stay at HHV, once for lunch and once for dinner. Very happy overall with the food variety and staff. I also LOVE that their quoted wait time are over-estimated and the next thing you know, you are seated within 5-10 mins (but told it's 25). Happened on both occasions. Food is great and tastes fresh, despite being a hotel restaurant. Definitely a need-to stop at place while in HHV. The view is the beach and water is also very nice!

Well, the waiter was pretty nice. Very attentive. Place has a good bustling vibe. Food selections varied. I had a catch of the day, white fish if I recall. Fish was on a bed of risotto. It was fine, not crazy good but fine. We tried chicken wings. There's only six pieces but the wings and thighs are bigger than the average. Drinks are great. Guys pour them to clients' desires. We did come for breakfast as well. Had island or Hawaiian style eggs Benedict. It makes them Hawaiian because of pulled pork. Again, for morning choices - pretty full selection of items.

I don't have any strong opinions about this place. Its decent food with views of the ocean. I think you definitely pay hotel and waterfront prices but it's no different than most places in waikiki on the water. I went here with my parents and uncles family for brunch. Our server, Brian, was super tentative. Only comment i would have is we had to request water for everyone, would be nice if that was automatic or at least he asked us, since it seemed standard everywhere else we went. But overall, good brunch spot.

We ate breakfast here 4 days during our trip and looked forward to it every morning. Loco moco was great and the oceanfront view can't be beat. Such a relaxing way to start the day in Waikiki. We'll definitely be back on our next trip to Hawaii!

Tropics Bar and Grill is visually a nice oceanfront bar at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort in Honolulu. My family and I came for dinner one of the nights we were there on vacation. We were seated immediately with a great view of the ocean. We ordered the Fish Tacos, Mushroom and Swiss Smash Burger with Fries, Kids Hamburger and Fries, Poke Nachos, Hot wings and Coconut Shrimp. I can only really comment on the Mushroom and Swiss Smash Burger because it was what my husband and I shared -- it unfortunately was one of the blandest burgers we have ever had. I am talking ZERO seasoning. I dipped it in ketchup in order to eat it though because I was starving. I believe everyone else in our party liked what they ordered. Our server was amazing - she actually said that the Mushroom and Swiss Smash Burger was a new menu item and asked my opinion on it. I was honest with her and she appreciated it - even gave us a discount on the bill which I thought was unnecessary, but very nice of them to do. I also ordered a Dirty Martini that was heavenly! Overall, we were really disappointed in our meal. I think I would come back again though and give them another try if we ever had the opportunity! Rating is 3.5 stars because of service!

Loved the vibes! We stopped by Tropics Bar & Grill in Waikiki at night, and it was such a nice experience. The beachfront view was beautiful -- perfect spot to relax and enjoy the ocean breeze. The bartender was really attentive and friendly, which made the night even better. The atmosphere felt lively but still chill, with good food and great service all around. Definitely a spot I'd recommend if you want good drinks and appetizers. A nice beach vibe at night!

Why on earth did you get rid of the kahlua nachos?? What were you thinking? And chicken tenders? Really? The view and drinks are amazing, the service is great, but the menu changes are iffy...

Great ocean views and fast friendly service make this spot a must. They are a little on the pricier side and I just don't think it's warranted. The food is very good and the views of the sunset during the dinner hour are amazing! But this still didn't justify the price in my opinion. For lunch I got the bacon cheeseburger and my wife got the Katsu chicken. All of this was very good. The food was hot and fresh. Even the French fries came out perfectly crisp and hot. For dinner we had the dinner for two. This came with brisket, chicken and sausage. Definitely filled us up but the $84 price tag was a bit much so we stuck with just water.

    Loco Moco*

Why not start your day with breakfast and a view here at Tropics Bar & Grill. The restaurant is right next to the beach with both indoor and outdoor seating. I'd recommend getting the outdoor seating to enjoy the beach view. We were greeted with a nice hawaiian lady who was friendly but also funny and cracked jokes very now and then. She asked where we were from and then uses that info to create conversations which made ordering a breeze. I ordered the Steak and eggs ($35), while my other half ordered the loco moco ($34) and lastly a side of pancakes for our little one. The steak was a bit tough and not that flavorful. I opted for potatos instead of the salad and got fried rice as well. Eggs were cooked just how i wanted it, over easy. The pancakes were a good side dish. 3 pancakes with a good size cup of butter, syrup and whip cream. The loco moco gravy was tasty and the hamburger patty was a good size. The fried rice went well and added more flavor to the dish. Overall, good food and views! Staff are friendly and always checking up on you. I'd imagine dinner on a Friday night with the sunset/firework show would be amazing here.

The macadamia pancakes and premium fruit plate were fantastic! My son and I shared both and loved it!

The Ube Macadamia Pancakes with the fresh whipped cream and The Premium Fruit Plate were fresh and delicious!

    No Meat Here (Veggie Burger)

We had a nice, relaxed dining experience at Tropics Bar & Grill during our trip. The restaurant is spacious, open, and beautifully located right by the ocean, which makes it a great spot to enjoy a meal with a view. We ordered the Chow Fun Noodles and the No Meat Here (Veggie Burger). The veggie burger was good and satisfying. The Chow Fun noodles were okay and nicely seasoned , personally, I think it would be even more delicious if the tofu were deep fried for a bit more texture. That said, everything was still enjoyable. What really stood out was the service. The staff were very nice, friendly, and welcoming, which made the experience pleasant and comfortable. Overall, the food was good, the atmosphere was lovely, and the oceanfront setting combined with friendly service makes this a great place to relax and enjoy a casual meal.

    Sunrise Sando
    Karina O.

Can only speak to the breakfast here, there were a handful of options but what sold us was the view with breakfast. The restaurant is right on the main walkway of waikiki beach which makes for great people watching! This sunrise sando was so flavorful and delicious but be warned it does have a mild spicy kick also had the fluffiest and softest folded eggs. The menu was a little unclear about the lettuce because it made it seem like it came on the sandwich but it comes as a little side salad with a vinaigrette dressing which was tasty. Not pictured but the order of banana bread was a hidden gem it comes with 2 slices and you can see and taste the freshly mashed bananas. Service was great here, the servers gave great tips about places to see and other restaurants to try. When dining here be aware that they have a net over the patio to keep birds out but some still manage to get in and they get stuck within the patio so you will have some birds flying around inside.

Parking was scarce, but we managed to find a spot nearby in the neighborhood. It was a Saturday around lunchtime, and we were able to be seated immediately. We didn't really know what we were doing with the menu, so our server ordered whatever she thought we would like. She did a great job. We got the Pipikaula short ribs, kalua pig, lomi lomi salmon, poi, mac salad, and fried butterfish collar.  Everything was so good! My favorite two items were the short ribs and the butterfish collar. The short ribs were so meaty with a nice firm texture and had a yummy sweet marinade. The fried butterfish collar was crispy and dripping with buttery goodness.  Trying poi for the first time was such an interesting experience as well. I had always wondered what it tasted like. I had always thought it was going to be like a sweet taro paste dessert, but it's actually more like a starch and serves the same role as rice! Its neutral flavor allows you to pair it with your proteins. It adds a bit of texture and helps you feel full. I was really grateful for finally getting to try it and loved learning something new! I had a great time at Helena's. The food was delicious, and I got to learn more about traditional Hawaiian cuisine. I totally recommend it. Great vibes.

We went with what's recommended for first timers - laulau pork, you eat the leaves everything and it's filling and delicious - short ribs, some might say it's overcooked but I think it's just a different way of cooking and eating it, the pieces were thick and high quality, comes with 4 - Loki salmon, it's cured and this reminds me of ceviche or pico de gallo and salmon, it was flavorful, juicy and refreshing - comes with onions and salt to add to the complexity of the flavors - we ate it with poi, which they use as the starch to replace the rice. It's made of taro, I say give it a try for that unique and authentic experience - coconut jelly was yummy They accept cash and card Limited parking in the front, come in right before 5:30 on a weekday to beat the crowd Small family business vibes The experience lives up to the hype!

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. As mentioned before there isn't much parking. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there. Overall the food and service was OK. The price was a bit high.
