I've eaten many Mediterranean dishes in the past, and Troya applies the Turkish version to most of their items. We ordered the Brussels Sprouts, Scallops, Lahmajun flatbread and the Manti. The waiter was very friendly and provided great service. All of the food tasted good, yet I would say the cuisine is an acquired taste. Came for here for dinner on a Saturday night with a reservation which is always nice in San Francisco. The ambience of the restaurant is cute and has a good selection of Turkish food for vegetarians. The Turkish fries, Brussels sprouts were good but the ran out of Aoili! The vegetable moussaka was the highlight dish. I have only been to Troya for lunch and it's one of my favorite places to go on Fillmore! They have an awesome lunch menu with many healthy option. Everything is in the $10-17 range for large portions of food. You can get kebab plates with rice as well as lamb shoulder and chicken plates that come with salad, rice, and pita. I got the lamb shoulder plate and it was delicious. The lamb was perfectly-cooked, shredded and very very tender. Not to mention they put some kind of creamy, spicy sauce on the rice that blew my mind! If you're in Pac Heights or Marina for lunch and craving Greek food, consider this your new go-to. read more

Yum! Came here with two friends yesterday. We got the red pepper dip and the hummus for appetizers. While the hummus was good, the red pepper dip was amazing -- would definitely recommend! I asked the server for a vegan recommendation and unfortunately none of the "large plate" entrees are vegan! That was surprising to me, because Turkish cuisine really lends itself to vegan dishes. The options for me were: Large plate menu: * veggie kabobs no cheese Small plate menu: * roasted brussels * roasted cauliflower * lentil soup The vegetable tagine sounds perfectly vegan but is cooked in butter. Thank you, waitress, for pointing this out! I ended up getting the roasted cauliflower and the lentil soup and it was a filling meal, especially on top of the appetizer dips. I love Tryoa! I've been about 4 times now for brunch and dinner. Everything on the menu is delicious. I love the Brussel sprouts, falafel and the halloumi salad. My spouse and I had lunch here today and except for the lentil soup, the food was horrible. My spouse ordered the vegetable kabobs and asked if it could be made vegan (sans cheese). They said no because the skewers were already made up. Really. How hard can it be to cut up or re-skewer some veggies. There was only 1 other diner in the whole place so they were not busy. And it made no sense on their part money-wise because cheese is more expensive than peppers. For $17, we expected those veggies to be beautifully seasoned and grilled. They weren't. The eggplant was raw and rubbery. Any Middle Eastern restaurant that cannot cook eggplant should immediately close its doors in great shame. Said kabobs were supposed to be served with rice. They arrived with a tasteless glob of quinoa. When my spouse asked about it, the waitress said the veggie kabobs were served with quinoa. Funny, we both heard her saying it came with rice when she took our order and the menu also said it came with rice. I ordered a falafel wrap but got a bowl. It was hard to understand how they screwed up both our orders. They corrected it but the falafel was cold and they put a shit-load of hot sauce in there without asking me for my preference. When the waitress came to clear the table, she noticed that I left 90% of my falafel. She asked if everything was OK but did not wait for my answer before asking if I wanted to take my leftovers home. I said no, thank you. She asked again if I wanted to take my leftovers. I again said no thank you. You'd think that would trigger a why. The apparent manager also noted my uneaten falafel and also didn't ask if it was satisfactory. I wouldn't go back to this place they offered me free lunch for a month. read more

I ordered takeout and they gave me the wrong item. Ordered lamb skewers. Based on the positive reviews and they gave me chicken. The restaurant didn't appear particularly busy and my order was the only one waiting at the time so not sure how they could have screwed that up. A bit disappointing because the dish itself wasn't that bad but it wasn't what I ordered and I noticed they substituted a cheaper menu item than what I paid for. Seems other reviewers have similar issues with not getting what they ordered. Suggest the restaurant to take greater care in quality control and orderly processing of orders. I was eager to try Troya because of all the veggie options their menu had. I love the neighborhood it's in, but was disappointed by the restaurant itself. I started with the spiced brussels sprouts ($9), as that's what brought me to the restaurant to begin with. They were way too fried and almost completely tasteless. I've been here a couple times and was a little bummed the most recent time that there wasn't moussaka on the menu but everything else we had was still great. My husband and I went here for date night and I really liked this restaurant for such an occasion. Casual and trendy, I would say. The "manti" is on the 7x7 Big Eats list for 2013. For those that don't know (and that included me), a "manti" is a Turkish dumpling. This is listed under the Larger Plates section of the menu. $16. I have been to Troya a few times now for lunch and dinner. I have tried the lamb kebabs, the eggplant flat bread, and a grilled haloumi cheese appetizer. The kebabs were incredible. The lamb was tender and perfectly seasoned. The egg plant flat bread was just ok, it was very small and wasn't really enough for a meal. The grilled haloumi cheese appetizer was the standout. I had never had haloumi before this dish, and it made me a fan. The cheese was warm but not oozing everywhere, which is what I would think would happen to cheese when it was grilled, but it stayed solid. It was really good with the bread that was served with it. I would recommend getting a reservation before attempting to come here, the hostesses seems to get annoyed when you do not have one... read more

Troya is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. My boyfriend and I lived a few blocks from this local spot for about a year and had to restrain ourselves from coming in every night! Eventually, we got to know the staff and owners, who are extremely kind and welcoming. They helped us celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, accomplishments, and even our recent move away from the city. We were so sad to leave this place that we saved it for our last dinner! That night they surprised us with a gift of a few of our favorite recipes and handwritten notes. It was magical. Unfortunately, it completely misses expectations. Food was fine, but service was awful. They didn't even have champagne and went to go buy it and were being stingy with the refills. They ran out of champagne again in the middle and left for half hour to buy more - once they got it, they only served us one more glass each because the "time was up". It's so hard to find halloumi in restaurants in San Francisco and it is my favorite cheese. I also had one of the flatbreads and it was really good. I was going meatless on the day I went due to Lent, and there were plenty of options. My party of 8 had meant to go to Noosh and found out it was closed, luckily we walked up the street and found Troya. Even though we didn't have a reservation, the waitress was able to accomodate our large group on a weeknight without any problems. Additionally, she even noticed I was pregnant without me saying anything and instead of seating us at the high table, combined two regular tables for us which I really appreciated. The food at Troya is amazing. I recommend taking it to go because the staff isn't particularly friendly or accommodating. We went to brunch and ordered their bottomless mimosa special. They did not have champagne stocked so the woman had to run out of the restaurant (twice!) to refill our drinks. They didn't check on us and we found ourselves frequently requesting more. They slowly became more and more angry with us constantly asking for service, extremely rude when we thanked them walking out. Most uncomfortable dining experience I've ever had.
