I finally came around to trying True Food after sitting on the thought for a couple years. I never imagined the place to be huge. They have tons of seating. The ambience is very fresh with lots of plants and greenery. You feel like you walked into a health cafe. The menu is pretty extensive and they have great coffee, cocktails, wine and food. My friend ordered the shakerita and it was soooo good. We ordered some espresso martinis which were great but they were missing the 3 espresso beans as garnish. The waiter was the worst - I think he must've been high, the way he stood there staring into space, mumbling but not actually making a move to go back to the kitchen to get the answer to our question - it was awkward - it was like he wanted to make us feel bad for asking questions when you guys' whole concept is catering to people with food allergies and intolerances.... they may know what's gluten-free, but ask about what has soy sauce in it (which often contains wheat, and therefore gluten) and everyone draws a blank AND have no motivation to go and find out. He finally gave up on us and sent a manager over, without telling us, so when someone new came and said 'can I help you?' we sent him away. Portion sizes were small, and we were still hungry after we left. I really didn't get what is supposed to be so great about the $35 tenderloin. What we ordered as medium-well came out still bleeding. (See photo) The side of sweet potato 'hash' was just old, dried out, microwaved, old-oil-tasting sweet potatoes. We were sat in the corner where a very strong cold draught was blowing in. No water refills and honestly, i don't think he could have handled remembering the water refill. I will say the portion sizes for some people may be small if you're VERY hungry. I love the organic vibe of the restaurant with the rustic wood paneling on the walls and the mural of love your mother. My family and I dropped by this restaurant in Chicago as it was one of the closest to our hotel the night we arrived. We were naturally hungry after our 4 hr drive and we were down to eat just about anything. As a family we shared their hummus, guacamole, mushroom pizza, some refreshing beverages, and their famous "Ancient Grains Bowl" with chicken added. Our son ate the buttered noodles. So let's break this down. Good: Food was delicious for the most part and definitely tasted fresh. The inside of the restaurant is absolutely beautiful and spacious. Our waitress was very nice as well. Bad: Food is very expensive. I also felt like there was an imbalance of spices that overpowered some of our dishes. My wife complained her pizza had a little too much heat for a mushroom pizza. Despite our waitress being nice we barely saw her and it was kind of annoying having to flag her down constantly when it wasn't that busy at this particular time. Now given the circumstances I may have given this restaurant a 4/5, but unfortunately I dropped it down one star because the food made my wife and son sick. I'm not one to accuse a restaurant of something like this if I can't prove it, but both my son and my wife got nauseous and had diarrhea not even a half hour after eating here (and both were perfectly fine before that). Thankfully I had a mild stomach ache but it wasn't anything nearly as bad as what they had. My wife spent most of our vacation in the bathroom. I shared a Teriyaki Quinoa bowl and Korean Noodle bowl with a friend. The Korean glass noodle bowl was definitely my favorite. Loaded with a lot of veggies; shiitake mushrooms, spring onions were definitely my favorite! Since it is fall season, they have a lot of pumpkin inspired dishes on the menu. My friend ordered a Butternut Squash soup for the evening and she liked it. We also ordered a pitcher of peach lemonade for the table and it was quite refreshing. To end the dinner after we had all spicy gossip, we ordered Flourless Chocolate cake. :)) I wished they had an option to make it Vegan as it was already topped with Vegan Vanilla icecream, however it had caramel syrup in it which had diary. I'm lactose intolerant and have a sensitive stomach overall, so I enjoy allergy friendly/health establishments. Out of the food we ordered, my favorite was Teriyaki Quinoa Bowl. It was so damn delicious. I also tried Korean Noodle bowl. It had sweet potato glass noodle which I was trying for the first time. The texture was a bit chewy. I also tried Butternut Squash soup in this fall vibe which went perfect with the bowls we ordered. I particularly was a fan of flourless chocolate cake dessert. It consisted vegan vanilla ice cream and some chunks of dark chocolate. It was delicious. My server was very attentive overall. And I could just walk in on Sunday evening for dinner. I wish I had the 4.5 star experience that the rest of the Yelp community seems to enjoy here. Maybe I'm just not ordering the right items. Tonight I tried the Korean chicken sandwich and made the tragic mistake of getting a side of the Umami potatoes. The Korean chicken sandwich was well conceived for the most part. Really tasted good but the execution was terrible. I find this to be true a lot here. They put two chicken tenders on it and not a breast. They were super dry and tough. The sandwich won't stay together at all without a breast. It just had too much sauce and other ingredients. It was just a super mess. The potatoes were some of the worst I have ever had. Let's just make it the worst ok? Dry, hard and with the most unappetizing and disgusting sauce you could conceive. My wife tried it and we're just at a loss. You went from the worst sweet potato hash (now thankfully a distant memory) to this? Just terrible. I washed the sauce off, added salt, pepper and some olive oil so I could make them palatable but they were still hard and dry. True Food Kitchen is my new favorite restaurant as it uses wholesome, intentionally and sustainably sourced ingredients. Everything we tried was so flavorful and tasted fresh. The portions sizes were good and easily shareable. My favorites were the edamame dumpling , kimchi fried rice bowl, and bone broth chicken ramen. Whatever we asked for took 10+ minutes, even salt and pepper, water, etc. The Mac and cheese was simply cheeseless. I'm not sure if it was due to this being a healthier vibe, but it seemed like dry pasta with breadcrumbs sprinkled on top. I had the chopped salad, which was simply not chopped. Whole leaves of various lettuces, some of which had gone bad. They forgot to add in the cranberries and cheese.
