The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with a great community feel and plenty of space to hang out and enjoy the setup. They were promoting the Favor app and had a goody-bag filled with promotional items including a gift card and other offers. They provided free brisket sliders and ice cream, which was a standout perk of the event. The brisket sliders were tender, smoky, and flavorful. There were sides of pickles and onions with regular and spicy BBQ sauce. The ice cream was a nice finish, especially for a hot outdoor summer event. The overall vibe was casual and well-organized, making it easy to relax, listen to live music, and enjoy the food without feeling rushed or overcrowded. I think I was eager to try BBQ while I was in Texas. Looking back, this probably wasn't the best spot to choose, but I hadn't eaten all day and figured, why not? The menu has plenty of options. I would've tried more, but I wasn't that hungry. You can order at the kiosk or at the register. I ended up getting the Poblano Queso Sausage Link (cut), Brisket Mac n Cheese and the Biscoff dessert. I wish I had noticed they had peach cobbler! Mac n cheese was okay! I didn't finish it. Sausage links were good! Biscoff pudding - 10/10 if you have a sweet tooth, you'll loveeee it! Teas were super gooood too! Would I come back? Probably not. Maybe for the tea, dessert and service alone, but that's about it. My meal was more on the pricey side. Plenty of seating though and it's convenient since you can do your grocery shopping right after. Highlight of the whole experience was the service! Saw ads for HEB True Texas BBQ on social media and decided to give it a shot. The online ordering process was pretty smooth, but I would probably recommend just going in and ordering there instead. There wasn't a huge line (no line when I got there) like at some other BBQ places, and that way you can at least get the food hot and fresh. Maybe because I ordered online for pickup, the presentation wasn't the best. The portion was okay for the price, and the food was flavorful, but it did feel a bit overly greasy. Since it's inside HEB, it still has somewhat of a "grocery store deli section" feel. I'm not sure if that's intentional, but if not, I think they could find a way to make the experience feel a little more premium. Overall, it wasn't bad, and I'd be open to going back and giving it another try when I'm in the area next time. read more

We wanted to try the BBQ here since they are right in HEB and convenient. Being that it was late in the day, a few things had run out but we were still able to order what we wanted. The restaurant has a huge dining area, so it's perfect for getting a group together. I ordered two meats and two sides. The lean brisket was tender and tasty. They presliced the sausage. I had the Mac n cheese and beans as sides. The drink station had a variety of teas and lemonade, although the soda machine was down at the time. Overall, this was a great place for BBQ. read more

Although this place gets high reviews, I was a surprised. Incredibly good, and very unexpected for a chain that's inside of a grocery store (HEB). (Blasphemy, I know) I'm no BBQ connoisseur, but this was some of the best BBQ I've had. I ordered a combo platter. Fatty Brisket - juicy and just the right amount of salt. Ribs - Meaty, sweet and crispy glaze, cooked just right that almost fell off the bone. Sausages - flavorful with a little spice. Beans - Not your traditional bbq molasses beans. These are like a mix of liquified refried and whole beans with bits of pork. Super yummy. Coleslaw- Sunflower seeds and cranberries (this was a first attempt a BBQ restaurant), and cabbage with a mild neutral sauce. Good, but missing something. I'd highly recommend. I am in a deep long term relationship with HEB. HEB is the finest supermarket chain I have ever encountered. Their selection is wonderful. Their tailoring of store offerings to the exact neighborhoods they are in is demographically sophisticated and well conceived. Their store brands are first rate. My house is full of them and they are often much better than the national brands. They are my go to location for buying beer and wine. I shop in HEB's and Central Markets all over Austin. The Hancock location is especially good and getting even better with its new expansion. * * * That said, even perfect soulmates have their quirks and faults. You learn to accept them rather than fight about them. Your saint of a spouse may insist on listening to the worst music on the planet. Your saint of a spouse's paddle ball partner might be the most irritating conversationalist in Texas. When the love of your life puts on his or her music, or Brings paddle ball partner home for a beer, You accept reality, You go into another room. You put on headphones. You wait for the current nuisance to pass. No need to fight. Let him or her do what they need to do. * * * HEB insists on running BBQ restaurants. HEB's True Texas BBQ is just not very good. I love the chain but I avoid the BBQ. My first encounter with True Texas BBQ was at an HEB in Killeen. I had brisket and sausage. The sausage was completely mediocre - a meal ruiner. As a result, I stayed away from True Texas BBQ's for years. * * * Well, they opened a True Texas BBQ at one of my favorite HEB's, the one at Hancock. I thought maybe the passage of time had improved the sausage. I ordered a Texas Sized Sausage sandwich. If anything, things have gotten worse rather than better. First of all, the concept of a Texas Sized Sausage Sandwich Is a definite odd one. I can see how one would have a Texas Sized Brisket Sandwich or a Texas Sized Turkey Sandwich. One just stacks the meat that much higher. Sausages are generally served as a sausage wrap. You take a tortilla and wrap it around your sausage. If you insist, you can take a piece of white bread and wrap it around your sausage. (This is great dipped in BBQ sauce.) I didn't see how they were getting get two or more sausages into a tortilla or what a larger constructed sandwich would look like. The constructed Texas Size Sausage Sandwich is an architectural disaster. You take one sausage, cut it in half lengthwise and put the two halves on a hamburger bun. You take a second sausage, cut it in half lengthwise and put those halves crosswise on the first set of sausages. Start thinking about Jenga issues. You add onion circles which want something flat to lie on but instead are precariously buried on two logs, which themselves are precariously placed on two logs. You balance the top of the bun on an onion slice that desperately wants to fall off. This is going to be one very difficult sandwich to eat. It is going to be messy to boot if you put BBQ sauce on those sausages. The sauce will give the onion even less of a firm foundation to hold on to. You are now not only looking at a sandwich that is about to collapse, but a sandwich that is going to make a tremendous mess doing so. Your dry cleaner is about to have a very good day. * * * How was the HEB sausage just as BBQ sausage? Awful. Much worse than I remembered it from Killeen. Greasy. Not much of an interesting taste. After eating two of the four sausages and my top BBQ sauce covered bun - The rest of the sandwich went into the trash bin. * * * Other people like this place. Maybe sausage is their Achilles heel and the brisket and turkey is all right. I am frankly not all that interested in finding out. There is an awful lot of really really good BBQ in this town. And if I am hungry at HEB Hancock, There are so many wonderful things I can buy in their store to eat just as soon as I get past the cash register, That I don't have to settle for dubious BBQ at all. read more

I wanted to be smart so, I ate here first after the gym before buying groceries, so i wouldn't over-shop. It was a great idea. I was pleasantly surprised by just how good it quick it was. When you walk in you have can choose to either order directly though 1 of 3 digital screens available to you, or you can simply look up at the menu and order directly from the cashier waiting at the counter. They also have a few drinks and side options you can grab directly from a refrigerated display. The menu has your standard BBQ options Brisket (fatty or lean), pulled pork, sliced turkey, sausage etc, plenty of sides to chose from, and even a couple rotating specialty items such as the Strawberry Cobbler dessert they had available today when I arrive. You can order a la carte, or as plates, they have sandwich or even full family options. To split for two, I ordered a three meat plate of lean brisket, sausage, and sliced turkey, with creamed corn and coleslaw. They gave me large portions of everything including sliced onion, pickles and bread. it was more than enough for both of us hungry after a workout with a little left over. It was really good. the meat was flavorful and smoky without being greasy. I prefer the spicy bbq sauce of the multiple they had to offer. All in all a great experience. A great alternative to 51st heb bbq. There is lots of space and TVs. They have some really cool ice machines and lots of options for tea. The decoration in the space is great and I would recommend H-E-B barbecue to anyone on their lunch break or looking for dinner. We got the family meal for 4 last week and it was amazingly good! The lean brisket was fantastic. Even the turkey was moist, not always easy to find. They were not sold out of anything when we showed up. It was so good we decided to add it to our rotation. We got it again today and it was not good. Perhaps the clue was that they were sold out of a few things, including lean brisket. The turkey was so salty we could not eat it, and also really dry. I can tolerate dry, but not this salty. They only had fatty brisket left, but what we received was not what I would call brisket. I think it was the deckle? Was almost an inch thick. C'mon. One disadvantage of the HEB BBQ is that you can't see the brisket when you order it. This is the second time it was disappointing (the last time at 51st Street), and I won't be back. I thought maybe we should have shown up before 6pm, but the turkey still would have been unpalatable. Ho hum. read more

This is the latest True Texas barbecue to open, now located in Hancock Center directly next to H-E-B. For those of you who are not familiar, when you walk in, you'll make your order on one of the two kiosks on the counter or you can just tell the cashier what you'd like. Unfortunately you cannot call in orders, but you can download their app and order from that. There is no drive up window at this location. They have a great varied menu with 2 to 3 meat plates, even burnt ends. Their chicken tenders are very juicy as is their smoked turkey. The brisket has a good solid smoke ring on it and the ribs are sweet, spicy and sticky. There is a three dollar up charge if you get ribs to go with your three meat plate and you'll have to ask for ketchup if you get fries or onion rings. Pricewise, they're pretty much in line for what you expect to pay for good barbecue these days.
