Decided to try for the first time. I got the 1 meat plate with Mac and cheese and a side salad. I got a water do my total came out to 12.98, which his normal for a BBQ place but when I got my plate I was not amused. All I got were two little dinky barley warm slices of turkey, a like warm conglomerate of "Mac and cheese" and a salad consisting mainly of spinach. We give up. The last SIX TIMES we have gone to get lean brisket at 5-6 pm, they have been sold out. I don't understand the business model of selling out of the one thing people want most every night at dinner time. The lean brisket is not exactly lean. After 6 or 7 folks that ordered after me got their food, I went and inquired about my order. I was hoping for a decent BBQ for dinner. This location is close to my home and I thought this place must be better than cooking at home. I was wrong. Everything was terrible. Chicken is dry and only the skin had seasoning. Not great seasoning. Chicken itself was bland except for the skin. Chopped brisket was just leftover brisket with bunch of BBQ sauce. Yuck! Ordered to-go. 1 Sausage Sandwich 1 Chopped Beef sandwich 1 creamed corn 1 potato salad 2 peach cobblers 1 side of each BBQ sauce (sweet and texas) Tasted the sweet BBQ sauce first, HEY, pretty good. tasted the Texas next, HOLY COW, that is some good stuff! A little smoky and a lot like Bullseye Original which is my favorite BBQ sauce. I usually don't use BBQ sauce at BBQ places because I like the flavor of the smoky meat without BBQ sauce better than with their BBQ sauce usually. Wish I had more of the Texas BBQ sauce, it was that good. The creamed corn was exceptional, worth it. Tasted the wifes potato salad, that was pretty good, but the wife was not that big of a fan, but potato salad (as well as coleslaw) is that way, personal preference. The peach cobbler was pretty good also. The wife said her chopped beef was really good. Now for my sausage sandwich, not that good. The bun reminded me of day old, just pulled out of the plastic bag. Maybe it is just me, but 2 bites in, forget the bun, pull out fork, eat the sausage. Now sausage from a BBQ place is always good. Not so this time. Kind of dry and chewy. Now was it due to the 10 minute drive home, and 5 minute wait carrying it in and setting up, IDK, but I doubt it. SO not a fan at all of the sausage and bun on the samwich. I will so be back, it was dang good, just not getting sausage anything next time. Also no fried food on the menu, no fried okra, onion rings or french fries. We ate at the new one on Harper's trace. The food is so good. The barbecue is the best. I especially loved the smoked Turkey. It is super moist and so delicious. The reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because of the price versus the size of the plate. It was my last trip...no self respecting Texan would call that boot leather I just tried to eat 'brisket'...and that was the fatty cut. The barbecue was delicious. another welcome addition to the Kingwood area. Purchased about 75 worth of barbecue for a small gathering. Unfortunately we got two pieces of bread, and about 4 pickles to go with it. Unlike most barbecue places where they seem to understand that you need onions pickles and bread, True Texas hasn't caught on to that lol and at the last minute I had to run to timewise for bread and pickles. I contacted the management at HEB and True Texas BBQ as they requested. To their credit, they listened to my criticism and refunded my money, then offered to buy me another meal and give them another chance. While the second pass was better than the first, it still wasn't up to my expectations. The pulled pork was moister and tastier than the first time, the brisket beans were great, and the Mac and Cheese was good and gooey - sure to please the kids. The Carolina (Sweet) bbq sauce was much more to my liking. The brisket however was overly fatty (yes I asked for fatty, but it had way too much fat in it) as well as a fair amount of gristle, and the sausage casing was very tough. I'd like to give them a better rating, but my original 2 Stars remains. I realize they can never satisfy everybody's taste, but you can't really call yourself "True Texas BBQ" if your brisket and sausages aren't up to snuff. I usually don't review a place until I have been at least twice, but since I live so far away I don't know if a 2nd visit will happen anytime soon. I read an article in my daily briefing news feed where this chain was rated by Texas Monthly as the best chain bbq in Texas. So naturally I dropped everything I was doing and drove right over. I live 18 miles from the Kingwood location and 23 miles from Magnolia. So I drove straight to Kingwood. The prices seemed very reasonable, but when I got my 1 meat plate I realized why. Not your typical Texas sized portions you get at most places. I ordered the fatty brisket plate and they gave me 1 full slice and a couple of shards of meat. I guess they weigh it in the back, but it was still smallish. However the sides are really big. I got the brisket beans and the BlackBerry cobbler. The beans tasted really good and were chock full of meat. The cobbler had a good taste, but was lacking that knock your socks off feel due to the crust being average. I also ordered the sausage link. The brisket and the sausage were polar opposites. The fatty brisket was awesome and I could cut it with my plastic fork. I just wish there had been more. The sausage looked artificial and had a waxy texture. The flavor was lacking and not even the bbq sauce could save it. Maybe they should add some more spices and have a spicy version. Generally we Texans love our sausage with a bit of bite. The employees are typical HEB quality people and could not do enough to be friendly and helpful. The employees alone moved this visit from a 3 to a 4. My mom lives in Conroe and my sis works in Magnolia, so my next visit will be at that location. I think I will skip the sausage next visit and try one of the other meats. Also, from a price/value standpoint I think I will do like I do at Rudy's and buy my meat by the pound and get just one side. For a fast food Bbq place this place is legit. Way better than Pappa's Bbq or Rudy's Bbq. Very affordable. I ordered the regular sliced brisket sandwich & a side of potato salad. The hubby had the regular pulled turkey & mac n cheese. The 1/4lb amount of meat was just right. Order bigger, if you want more meat. I tried both the Texas Bbq sauce & the sweet sauce. The Texas Bbq sauce was the bomb. It had a spicy twist from being peppered & the sweet sauce was okay, just reminded me of Sweet baby rays. Everything was delicious. I don't know why the other reviews said their brisket wasn't that great. It was very moist & good. The fat content on the brisket was low, which I definitely love. Well, This was a order for pick up. It took a while. I had the chopped beef sandwich. It was a bit dry and I got plenty of hard burned bits inside. It was small!(size of a regular cheeseburger at McDonalds). The green beans taste like a tomato sauce with green beans. Mac n cheese was ok. The potato had plenty of meat and it was good in size. The cornbread was good. Very moist and the honey butter added an extra awesome flavor. To be honest I expected a little more from this HEB.
