Food was very disappointing. There's no excuse for colorless produce during August in New England - especially at that price point! Garden salad was supposed to include "seasonal offerings" - red bell peppers and mesclun mix?? Give me a break. If I had to guess I'd say that all the ingredients came from some large purveyor. The pizza dough was flavorless, no salt. Beer and cider were ok. I would have been happy to sit at the bar and eat nothing. The ambience was nice enough and the service was very nice as well. I suppose True West probably makes most of its money off booze and as a result doesn't care much about the food - but if that's the case it should be cheaper at least. read more

Do not go. These folks may brew beer ok (I have only ever ordered wine) but they simply cannot do food. Period. Went tonight with a friend - visit number three, and that means the review is now happening. Got there (Saturday) at 5:30PM and waited 62 minutes before one fish taco appetizer came out and a measly $4 portion of cole slaw. Tried to order a flatbread pizza but they were out of them - at 5:30PM on Saturday. Should have left at that moment. The waitress was definitely having trouble looking us in the eye for the better part of the hour. Folks sitting two tables away were also in order purgatory and were pacing around the deck waiting for something/anything to eat. They got a discount on their meal - we did not. PLEASE shut down if you cannot get a simple fish taco app out in 15 minutes. Ugh. I really really want to like this place. We've been here multiple times. But it is consistently mismanaged, the food has gone down hill, and the prices are too high for what it is. We won't be back. Tonight, they were short staffer with only one server. Then, the server brought me the large beverage (without asking which size I wanted), brought out the kids' meals last (long after the adults had their food), and served us the bottom of the French Fries--the burnt dregs. Summary: Go for the food not the beer. It's great to have a new restaurant in town! The place has been packed since it opened. I've been pleased with the food (the Founder's Flatbread is my favorite). But, after trying five of their beers, I have yet to be impressed. Their signature Brown Ale is drinkable but a mismash of flavors that's ultimately boring. Their Irish Stout (I think it was a special for St. Paddy's) was awful. There was another one I sent back because it was so bad. I think the best I had there was a Lager which is odd because I rarely drink lagers. Service is good, especially considering how recently they opened. And the atmosphere is fun and convivial though too loud. As an avid beer aficionado, I hope the beer will improve over time, but as it stands now, I'll probably just order wine on my next visit. read more

We live locally in Acton and waited a few weeks before checking out True West this past week. We're in our late 20's and were very surprised to hear about a Brewery/Restaurant opening up so close by. I personally was very excited as I'm a big fan of local beers and microbreweries. Beer: The beer selection is great, containing both in-house brewed beers on tap and other bottled options you'd see from other restaurants. We tried several of the in-house beers on tap and were very impressed. The Golden in particular was great, and all the beers had a refined taste to them -- nothing "new" about their quality of beer. A+ Service: We went on a Friday night -- the place was bumping and with a 40-60 minute wait. We ended up getting table after only about 25-30 minutes, which was great. Our entrees took a long while to come out, not a surprise for a new restaurant - hopefully in time this would improve as the kitchen staff settles. We sat with empty beer glasses for 10-15 minutes before our server checked back in -- we put in for refills and were assured our food would be out any moment. Overall the service could be summed up as "Waiting". Waiting for a table, waiting for refills, waiting for our food -- nothing egregious, and something I'd expect to improve over time. We did try to call ahead or make a reservation, which I guess they are not doing at this time. Food: Yikes -- this brought us down to 3 stars. Our Appetizer (Tots) was small, and barely fed the table of 4 (about 2 tots a piece). Entrees across the table ranged from good, decent to not great. The fish and chips was a disappointment -- the beer batter was soggy and the taste was off - maybe the fish, maybe the batter. The fries were also soggy, unsure if that was because the fish is served on top or not. Being the most expensive dish on the menu, this was off-putting. Will stick with a burger next time. Overall: Lots of room for improvement on the food side -- Beer was excellent. Would like to try other dishes on the menu in the future. I would expect things to speed up after they've been open for 6+ months. Will visit again but stick to the typical bar food. read more

The restaurant that just cannot get out of its own way. The beer is great, the space is nice, and the food decent but the service is consistently the worst of any restaurant that I have ever been to. We keep going back thinking that is a fluke but the reality is that it is just terrible. Starts from the moment you walk in door. Seated at 8:40 for an 8:15 reservation. On two separate occasions waiting for 15 minutes for a server to come to our table. Truth be told, the second time it might have been longer but my husband went up to the hostess after 15 minutes had passed. 25 minutes to get drinks on the table and it wasn't crowded. 1:15 minutes to get one course of burgers. The waitress never comes to check in the table and they stand congregated at the computers where the ostensibly order things. There does not seem to be a restaurant manager at least not one that is there on Friday and Saturday nights when once is most needed. Total waste of what could be a great establishment. read more

I'd give 3-4 stars to the taste of the food and assortment of drinks, but the staff really don't sell this place well. Our waitress started off nice but quickly went downhill; she took over 15 minutes to deliver a canned soda, was nasty when she realized she probably forgot it and mad we reminded her after patiently waiting, and left us for the rest of the night but once to bring us the food and bill. Idk if it was a bad night but the entire shift of workers all looked miserable and made ZERO effort to be friendly or make eye contact when helping our waitress/ table. As I've come to learn, most 5-star reviews are paid for by the establishment and most 1-star reviews are extortion attempts by Yelp (or just fuddy-duddies with nothing better to do). I'm going to go with two stars in the hope that True West takes this seriously. This past Sunday (10/8) was my second visit to True West. The first was GREAT. Quality beer and awesome food (I had the fish tacos). For this second visit I brought my friends from out of state in the hopes the experience would be the same as the first. Nope. First big negative was the service. Slow, slow, slow. Beers took 15 minutes to get delivered, to which the server apologized and seemed to indicated the bartender tucked the beers in a corner where she couldn't see them. Unfortunately, we were only able to have 1 round since the server never came back to check on us after the food was delivered. Only other time she came by was when she delivered the check (after we had to flag her down). We even ran out of water. Second big negative was the food. I ordered the Monte Cristo and didn't even finish half of it. Such an uninspiring, flavorless sandwich that quite literally looked as if it was thrown together with the bread falling off the top of the sandwich. Dry, flavorless ham, turkey (didn't know monte cristos had turkey), no cheese, and a pile of powdered sugar on the top. My friend commented that the carnitas in the taco was dry, but otherwise good. His wife ordered the mac and cheese. To accentuate the poor service, a second waitress tried to deliver another monte cristo sandwich to our table (which obviously was not ours), then come to find out, our neighboring table was billed for the erroneous sandwich. At least the fries were good. I'll chalk it up to an off-day, since both tables on either side of us had similar experiences with the service; one had the erronous sandwich on their bill, the other had long waits like we did. The place wasn't THAT crowded; a few open tables and plenty of spots at the bar. Perhaps the kitchen was a bit chaotic and it was spilling out to the waitstaff. I really really wanted to forget about this whole episode. But after reading the owner's unapologetic insult of a response, which already speaks for itself, I wanted to return to clarify a few things. First from the owner Pete's public response to my prior review: "I received the notification and walked over to the table and attempted to address Lee's concerns then and there but he insisted he was fine and all was good. His friends then saw the review and were summarily upset with Lee and shamed him into taking it down, which he did. Now that his friends aren't looking he has returned to give his personal perspective which is certainly his right." What he didn't mention was that when he walked over to the table, his attempt to address my concern was asking if anyone wanted to hear the review I just wrote. When everyone responded no, he proceeded to read the review out loud to the party of six sitting there and everyone else in the restaurant. From previous responses to other's reviews, It's great that Pete, thinks he's right about everything. And that he knows me and my friends better than I do. That a 47 year old man could be shamed into removing an accurate and honest review of his experience. You can keep thinking that. In fact, I've forwarded my review and your response to my friends who were there so that they could have a good laugh and submit their own experiences of that evening. I will also be posting this on Facebook and other social media accounts so people can form their own opinions. Highly Disappointed!! I never leave online reviews, but this dinner experience just ruined the evening. Almost everything about the experience left a ton to be desired and improved. Since we had gone for dinner after an Orchestra performance at Indian Hill, we knew we had to order quickly before the kitchen closed. I ordered a margarita, average taste, nothing unusual, but the drink glass was very sticky, no matter where I touched it or picked it up from. The pretzel was also an average appetizer, nothing to write home about. The tacos were dry, very less sauce and flavor. The steak was under cooked (I had ordered medium well), hardly any flavor/bland, the carrots were underdone and could have been cooked longer, overall barely warm. Since the kitchen was closing soon, our waitress asked if we wanted to put in the dessert order, we ordered the cookie sundae. However our dessert arrived right after our dinner had been served, we had barely had one bite of the main course. The ice cream was beginning to melt. Pointed it out to the waitress, she took it back to the kitchen. We had dessert at the end and asked her to bring it back for us. The cookies were too hard and seemed stale. Overall good ingredients, decent menu options but TERRIBLE execution! I usually give any place 2 tries or so before writing it off, but after this experience not sure if I would bother going a second time. read more

Sour beer 'Catharsis' was delicious! We bought a growler. Food was good, but wayyy overpriced. The pizzas were very small, personal sized, and between $10-13. Definitely not worth the price. I have been to True West a number of times. I keep hoping the food is better, but nope. The beer is pretty good, especially the A Little Toast. But the food is pretty terrible. I have been 4-5 times and my meal has been ok. I went over the weekend and I had the wings, they came fully connected and it really turned my stomach. I had to pull apart the wings and it was pretty disgusting. I have never had wings that way before and it was gross. My wife had the fish tacos and they were bland, boring and under seasoned. I keep wanting this restaurant to be good but it constantly disappoints me. read more

Really didn't want to think about this place again but the owner's reply to my review deserves a reply. First, his "apology" reply is a critique of my review and calling me a liar which is a great way to run a business. He wasn't there and defends his bartender who is one of the rudest people we have ever met. He then focused his reply on how his bartender didn't change the channel because other people were watching football. First, that's not true and second that wasn't our issue. My issue is with your bartender who had a horrible attitude and was an ass*** to my fiancee and parents. If he spit in our face, it would have been equally as off-putting. This wasn't me being emotional, this was the truth. Two weeks later (which is the first time we heard from True West on this) and we still aren't over the experience. Its about service and getting a level of respect when you are PAYING for food/drink and this owner doesn't appear to get that. Third, he called me out for not liking his beer. Again, this is in his apology reply two weeks later. I admit we didn't have beer that day because it took 20 minutes to get served and when we did, it ended horribly. My fiancee and I have been to True West before and liked the atmosphere and thought the food was good. Beer was pretty good, however, these types of breweries are all over the place now so yes I would rate the beer as average comparatively speaking. That's just personal preference and it doesn't help when you have a horrible experience like we did. Per the owner's request, I have updated my review to keep it "factual" like he wanted. Next time, just reach out directly shortly after an incident and actually apologize. Acknowledge you weren't there and say this is not the type of behavior we expect from our waitstaff. Visited for the first time with 5 friends on a Saturday night. The good: 1. We may have lucked out, but we immediately got a table with no wait at 7:00 p.m. on a Saturday night. (I did, however, notice that a group was waiting for our table when we left at 9:30) 2. The beer - uniformly excellent. Their Belgian Dubbel and Czech Pilsner were exceptional. 3. Server - friendly (although service was a bit slow) The bad: 1. The food - uniformly bad. Two appetizers, the "pretzel" and seasoned nuts, were horrible. Three of us ordered hamburgers: totally unimpressive. Two ordered the steak tips special - The meat was so tough, they both left most of theirs over. The fries were the worst I have ever had - limp and greasy 2. Food prices - unbelievably high. $15 for a tasteless hamburger. Come on now. 3. Ambience - sterile and noisy. My feedback is similar to that expressed by others reviewers over six months. The owners promised to take others feedback to heart. They haven't. IMHO, they need to fire the chefs, create a new menu, and lower food prices. read more

We came on a Sunday evening to celebrate a belated Valentines Day. We were excited having heard some good things and driving by, it looks very intriguing. Let's just say the host was extremely rude and at that point, we should have left. He basically acted like we were bothering him and unsure why we were there. Looking back, I am now unsure why we went there! Waiter was nice enough but never even mentioned specials to us. We heard other waiters telling other diners. It took a while to even be acknowledged. My boyfriend got a flight and while he drank them all, he really was unimpressed. He would never order a glass of any of them. He spoke of Red Raven and Medusa (Hudson) being far better. The food was ok, not bad but really not special. Had a flatbread and Reuben. The Tator Tots were the best part of our visit but certainly not enough to bring us back, ever. We also felt that $60 for this experience was too much. We would just give this restaurant an "eh." Just really nothing special about it. Good luck! read more

This was my second visit to True West. I believe there's been a menu change because the choices were limited. My friend and I struggled to find something to order and wound up getting burgers. The burgers were nothing special and the sweet potato wedges were like baked potatoes with no crunch. There was only one choice for Cabernet which wound up costing $9.00 per glass. The burger cost $16 with the up charge for sweet potato fries which we found outrageous. Our bill came to over $80.00 and we both decided that we could have gotten higher quality meals and drinks elsewhere for allot less. Nice location but menu needs adjustment as do the outrageous prices. read more

This place is pretty nice. Kind of a hyper cool, industrial modern, spaceship design, & while not a beer guy, I was still impressed by a rather extensive array of local (and house brewed) craft selections. All available on tap too... The food per-se not so much. We tried a couple of their staples: a brociolini & roast garlic pizza (flatbread) and a fried chicken / ranch sandwich both were barely OK, the flatbread a little less so. A huge picece of double battered crispy fried chicken & gouda sandwich was way bland & just didn't work... maybe less chicken to bun ratio? or maybe less of a hard crispy shell? Similarly the flatbread was half the size of a normal small pizza, w/ a few strands of broccolini, the advertised bechamel sauce may have helped a little, (had it been discernible) but as it was, tho' both were freshly prepared, neither were something we would request again. Despite the two misses, If I were an Acton-ian I'd give these folks another try... They obviously are trying to please, and some of the attention to detail : Fresh nice brioche bun on the sandwich,the seemingly homemade (excellent) pickle spears were fine, & the homemade fries (came with the sandwich) rocked out ! They've got a big investment in a lovely new space and have a lot going for them, had they charged half the $29- for a couple of sandwich sized plates, might have thought about the third star. Nice, young, local, non-professional kids as staff too... So give 'em a try. read more

Went to True West today with 4 friends. This is the third time for us and all I can really say is, go elsewhere. The beer is great !! But it doesn't make up for everything else. Our tab was 198$ we didn't have enough good anything for that money. I had the fish tacos that had no flavor at all except HOT,and spicy.... No taste just spicy!! Me and my father came for a nice Sunday afternoon lunch, he had went before and told me it wasn't great but I wanted to try it for myself. We got in and went to the bar, he ordered a beer, I ordered a watermelon refresher. The bartender informs me there's no watermelon... Okay? So I switch to a blackberry drink. After a couple minutes the drinks arrive. My $10 drink comes in the smallest glass I've ever seen and his beer is also pretty small for $8. I order a burger, he orders a meatloaf sandwich... Only for the bartender once again to tell us that they were out of meatloaf. So he orders the fish tacos. While we are waiting for the we make small talk to the bartender and ask questions about the beer. She answers with an attitude like we aren't good enough to talk to her and knows nothing about the beer. Finally out food comes and my medium burger is well done, and his fish tacos were cold. Tasted like it came straight from the freezer which is 100% unacceptable when there is a fish market in the same building. They were so bad he could barley eat them and they were $16. I wanted to give this place a chance... But acton isn't Boston. It's unacceptable to charge that much for small drinks or cold frozen fish. This place is overpriced, and it's not going to last. Our meal was $70.. $70 for 2 beers, 1 drink, a burger and fish tacos... Just because people have money in acton doesn't mean you can charge them up the a** because you make your own beer. Also if you are going to "sell" specials... You might want to actually have the ingredients. We will never be back. read more

Where to start... First of all, terrible service. We were seated at a "table for two" that turned out to be a shared picnic table which was something we were not told beforehand. That aside, it then took well over 25 minutes to get our drinks (a beer and a sangria). It then took a whopping hour and a half (!) to get a turkey BLT and a burger! I had to order another beer because our food was taking so long. After I ordered the beer, the waitress came back ten minutes later and asked if I had ordered said beer (she didn't even remember the kind of beer I ordered, mind you) and then she put my order in... ten minutes after the fact! On the food front, it was nothing special despite the fact that they make a big deal about being a "scratch kitchen." French fries were cold when they brought them out, burger was... well, a burger, and the turkey BLT was dry as hell. 1/10 stars would not recommend. Lost our business, that's for sure. read more

Amy is the best waitress ever! She's not bopping around ignoring your more nuanced requests. She's attentive and conversational and gets what you need. Honestly the place is consistently understaffed but I guess it's good for beer sales. Don't expect to get in and get out. But if you're a regular then there's nothing to complain about that Amy can't solve for you. read more

Let me first say that I really wanted to like this place. I love all things local and when I first heard about them - I met the chef (I think his name is Steve?) At the Acton farmer's market, I sampled their test dishes. When I inquired if it will be vegetarian friendly, his response was "Of course, we will be a farm to table restaurant, there will be plenty of options". Um.. no. When I actually went there to try them out, after a half hour wait, when I asked them about vegetarian dishes - they looked at me as if I was talking in Latin. Anyway, we had waited this long so why not... We picked a few items from the appetizer menu- flatbread wasnt bad but very very oily. They totally forgot the curly fries and when they did bring them, just as we were finishing - worst fries ever. I mean totally limp and grose. We ended up leaving them all. I ordered mac and cheese for my 5 year old thinking that it would be something fancy - something different - nope. Basic with watery sauce. Panera makes the best Mac and Cheese and I am not even a fan of chain restaurants. I will say though that they did pay attention to our drinks and when I didn't like my drink she brought out another one and didn't charge me for it. But its not even the food which left a bad taste in our mouth. Its the fact that the waitress kept coming to our table, wanting to remove food and shove us out the door. One time my husband was actually eating from the plate when she was about to take it away. Outrageous! I understand you're busy but is this is the way to treat your customers? In a restaurant? Thumbs down. We spent over $60 for a family of 3 and came back feeling disgusted. Not a good feeling. Too bad, because I was really rooting for them. Oh well. So bottomline for us is that we will go there maybe in another 6 months when the initial rush and excitement has died down. I'll definitely go there for drinks but we are better off dining elsewhere. The only thing about the place was the guy at the front door, who was very nice to us. - First of all, on a Saturday night more than a half of their menu was gone, we could order only burgers and salads. Then the waitress started messing up things... - We ordered cheese for the burgues, non of us got the cheese. I told the waitress about it so we would not be charged for that. We were charged for the cheese!! - So then the food arrived, my burger and bun were blacked burned! I ordered medium well... - I ordered pickles for the side thinking that it was either fries or pickles for free. I got fried pickles somehow? ok... The lady dropped all the fried pickles on my husband. Got me some more. - I was charged for the fried pickles? I asked the waitress, "Wasn't pickles free on the menu???" She said "no, I forgot to mention that to you". Not happy with her answer I got the menu again and it said fries + pickles for free as your side or this this and that for $$$. I went to the nice guy on the front door and told him what happened. He said that since I asked for pickles, the waitress understood fried pickles? I told him if both fries and pickles come for free, why did my husband got only fries and I got nothing? not fries or normal pickles? He kept telling me how the waitress misunderstood it. I was like, but man, where is fried pickles on the menu?? It's not even there, where did she find fried pickles??? I just do not want to pay for it, it was not my mistake. After a few minutes going back and forth he finally took the amount off of the bill. - Just mentioning something that I hate as well... I got the bill a way before I was done eating! This really makes me lose my appetizer. Definitely not the best experience at all. And by the end my husband paid a good tip for her????? saying that would be incorrect to pay less????? Dinner was not very good. The beef burger I had was very flavorless and the Parmesan fries were soft and soggy, not crispy. Their lettuce and tomato were really fresh though. Their bread was all right. They need to do something to liven up their burger. Beer was all right. I didn't like their brown ale or their stout though - they were roasted so much that they tasted burned to me. They had a British Creme on Nitro though, I'd come back for that. Summary: their beer is all right, but their food flavor and texture wasn't too great. Decor, service were fine but food is king to me so without that I'm hard-pressed to come back. read more

I live locally and really, really want to like it. First wait - to get a table. OK, it's Saturday night, no reservations accepted. They sent me text with the link to NoWait app(android). Pretty cool, you see your place in line. So we went home (5 min away). 1 hour 40 min later we came back with 2 parties still ahead of us and were seated immediately. I guess people take advantage of this app and sometime don't show up, so don't pay too much attention to it. We put in our appetizer order and realized there's no drinks menu. I asked our waiter for recommendations, she was completely clueless. Ordered appetizer and beer. Beers arrived pretty quickly but no food 20 min later - still no food. Reminded our waiter. Eventually our food arrived 50 min from being seated and all at once - main course and appetizer. They apologized about it, offered to take appetizer off the bill (never did). I have to say the beer was good, and food was excellent. Great buffalo wings, excellent burger, really liked fries and home-made dip. (Although it got a bit cold while we were working on the wings). And I really appreciate "home-made" quality. Just really well done tasty food from fresh high quality ingredients. But the service... Oh, and small detail, I asked to modify my meal slightly. When it arrived I realized that my request was ignored. Waiter apologized, said that chef missed it. Whatever. One more annoyance on top of everything else. So , in the end. I'll wait a couple of months, let them work the kinks out and try them again. read more

On our first visit to True West we really enjoyed their beer and the "white" fries appetizer. The atmosphere was bustling but not uncomfortably loud on a Friday night. We found seats at the bar about 10 minutes into an estimated hour-long wait for a table. The bartenders are super friendly and my pineapple mojito was excellent, definitely took the blah out of a rainy fall night. Vegetarians-- there are plenty of options on the menu, even their caesar salad has vegetarian dressing! Plus, it is delicious. And now for the hmmm moment, which I only mention in hopes of helping the kitchen smooth out what options are / are not possible for the mac & cheese dish. Before I ordered this dish, I asked the bartender if the bacon could be left out, she kindly went and asked the kitchen and they said yes it could. So, I ordered it. The dish came and there was (what tasted like, according to my dining partner) pulled pork in it-- which isn't even something that should be in the dish in the first place. The waitress was so apologetic and kind about this, they took the dish back and packed us up a new dish of mac & cheese to take home after comping basically our ENTIRE bill. We were really impressed and talked the whole way home about what a class act / amazing gesture that was of the management. Then I opened the mac and cheese to-go container this morning and there was bacon in it. Guess what? No small business is perfect. We heard all the buzz and we're excited to try this place out. We knew it would be busy so we went at 3:45pm. The place was pretty empty and we got a seat at the bar. No one greeted us for 5+ min. We did end up talking to the bar back about the beers and finally got the attention of the bar tender to serve us. Time to order food and the bar tender was MIA. Thank goodness for the bar back. He told us about the food and took our order. The food was good and the beer was excellent. Forget about a refill on the beer. I asked the bar back again for help but he said he could not help get a beer. The bar was severely disorganized. I saw a couple sit down next to us. It took 15 min for him to just order a beer. The manager was walking around chatting but she should have been helping behind the bar. Seems like for a Sat evening they would be staffed appropriately. Might have to give this place 6 months before retuning. See if they can work out the kinks in service. read more

I really want to like this place, but each time I've gone I'm disappointed with both the service and food. They really need to take a look at the customer experience and ensure there is enough staff. I'm a patient customer, but the people next to me at the bar walked out after waiting 20 minutes for a drink. That was at lunch. Staff blamed people a lack of help at the bar, but I could see the same thing happening at the tables. Management and the owners need to take a hard look at themselves and make some decisions to improve the customer experience. Beer is good, but not worth the service issues and subpar food. read more

Can you guys give us a real cheeseburger? Yours is way over seasoned with whatever you put into it and tastes absolutely nothing like one might imagine for a burger. Unhappy. Pretty on a plate but the taste falls well short. read more

I was very happy to come here. The beer selection is wonderful and most is made in house. I enjoyed the IPA and the ale I had. I forgot the names of the beers I tried. I had the pork belly street tacos which were phenomenally good. read more

We have come to this location several times and were excited to see they added a flight option to the menu. Lauren C. was our server. She was funny, timely on filling out drinks and checking on our food delivery. The food was fresh and extremely flavorful. We had the duck meat balls which were fun with a great winter herb profile. The variety of beer options gave us a range of flavor that was consistent with the style and balanced in flavor. read more
