    Mini roast pork.
    Chelsey T.

Finally got to try this location. I used to work so close to where they were before and ate here frequently! Walked in and honestly, it felt the same, which was good! The nostalgia was on point. Parking is street parking only. Take out or you can dine in. They have breakfast until 10am. Their lunch menu is hand written on a white board. You can either get a mini, regular, or combo 2 choice! Mini is usually enough for me and I got the roast pork with gravy. Yum!! I missed it so much! They take card (with a fee) or cash. I would recommend going early enough so they do not run out of what you want. They only make so much for the day so get there quick!

I was craving authentic Lau Lau away from the busy Waikiki area and came across this spot on the edge of Chinatown. For about $16, the Lau Lau plate came with your choice of mac salad or greens, rice, and an extra serving of Kalua pork. They also offer a mini size if you prefer a smaller portion. The regular plate was hearty and could easily feed two people. The ladies working there were so kind, and it felt great supporting a local business--you can really taste the love in the food.

Great place to go for a home cooked meal. Breakfast or lunch worth the trip every time!

I used to pick up breakfast here on my way to work, but it was too far to backtrack for lunch. However, yesterday and today I arranged to finish my workdays early and made it a point to stop by here for lunch. Yesterday, I had a mixed plate of Beef Stew and Pork Chop Mushroom. I liked the stew -- it tasted like what I grew up eating. The Pork Chop Mushroom was different -- boneless pieces of meat in a mushroom gravy. It was a lot to eat, but I was able to finish everything, including the mac salad. Today, I had to try their Hawaiian Mix plate (laulau, long rice & kalua). The Hawaiian plate was massive and could easily serve two people. I enjoyed it but couldn't finish everything in one sitting. When I came here for breakfast, it was usually still dark outside. These two days eating in for lunch was nice, and I sat close by the windows -- actually being able to see outside. I get different vibes from ordering and eating at Tsukenjo. It's good, local-style food made by local people. One reason I keep coming back is that I knew of them at their previous location at 705 Cooke St. in Kakaako. I have nostalgic memories from working in that area in those early days. Update 6/13/2025: Stopped by to pick up one of my all-time favorites -- Roast Pork w/Gravy. Added a third photo to the ones already attached.

One of my favorite places to go when I stay across the street at the Marriot. The best part of this place is the amount of food you get and the pricing. Can't really beat the price for this place as it's actually still under $10 for basically home made meal for some protein and rice. Breakfast special is my go to The place is small. Has about 4 tables downstairs and I am not sure if there is extra room upstairs. You're not here for some elaborate food..it's simple and does it's job for a good price. Service is fast and decent food.

I stayed across the street at AC hotel for a week and I went to Taukenjo every day! So good and friendly staff. The French toast is to die for!!!

We came here for breakfast, however, it is super difficult to find parking, by the time we arrive here it is already past 10:30am, no more breakfast. We ordered one of the specials - Lau Lau, to share. It is one of the best we tried in Hawaii. Highly recommend if you don't mind the parking situation. Also, there is no restroom in this restaurant and it is difficult to find restroom in the area, just so you know.

Had a rare morning off getting my car serviced downtown. After doing a little shopping in Chinatown, I made my way to Tsukenjo's for brunch. They are located near the Union Mall walkway on Bishop Street between Beretania and Hotel Streets. It's mostly take out, with about 5 2-person tables available. Craved breakfast, so I got the Local Special (2 eggs, rice, 2 pieces each of Spam, Vienna Sausage, & Portuguese Sausage) with the fried rice upgrade (+$1). My usual, the Early Bird Special (1 each of everything in the Local Special), is only available until 8 am. My food came out soon enough, nice and piping hot! The fried rice had a decent amount of meat in it. Meat, eggs, and rice, the perfect local breakfast for me! Tsukenjo's is another restaurant with rotating daily specials, can't wait to try their baked chicken! Repeat and recommend!

This place is a hidden gem in downtown! My favorite local spot for breakfast, with a rotating daily menu--like the Kalua pork on Fridays. It's run by two really nice ladies who work incredibly hard to keep things running. The food is delicious, and the prices are unbeatable--$9 for the pancake special and $7.50 for omelets. It's a true hole-in-the-wall that's easy to miss, but I'm so glad I found it. Highly recommend!

I hadn't been here In a few years but they did not disappoint. Portion size was a bit smaller but it's still a lot for food! That pork and gravy was just as tasty as ever. One of the best hole in the walls I've ever found ~

Combo with pastele stew & shoyu chicken
    Marynell K.

Ho doesn't like an affordable plate lunch in downtown? This was my first time here and definitely not my last. For downtown the prices are on the more affordable side. They give heaping portions so it's well worth the price. They have daily specials. On Thursday's the specials include pastele stew so I tried that and shoyu chicken. The pastele stew was delicious. Very flavorful and had lots of meat. The shoyu chicken was soft and falling off the bone. The sauce wasn't too salty. I will definitely be back to try other specials.

This business has been around for several years. I haven't been here for a couple of years since COVID. The owner makes all the food. An employee is cashier. My favorite is the roast pork which is shredded and really soft. Prices are affordable at $12.50 with a big portion. I will definitely come again to try pastele stew.

The best beef stew with the flava and fatty beef. So so ono. This is a mini.
    Patrick C.

The best fatty beef stew eva. So delish and fresh. I forgot to order the poi. This place has a very large variety of local foods. Best find across from AC Honolulu Marriott on Bishop.

Breakfast Special was not only delicious but only $7

If you're not a fan of seafood, don't let the squid deter you as it is a minimal part of the dish and added more of a crunchy textural component rather than actual flavor. This was my wife and my favorite dish. The luau pork was also very good though I liked the version we had at Toa Luau better. We also liked the haupia which was a very refreshing coconut pudding though for some reason our boys didn't like it. We also tried pipikaula which are thinly sliced dry-aged beef short ribs marinated in soy sauce and something else that made it sweet. If you know Korean barbeque, you'll instantly get the sensation that these are close cousins to galbi, though the pipikaula are much less sweet in comparison. The dry aging process also makes them a bit more dryer than galbi. On to more difficult stuff. I was enthusiastic about the fried butterfish collar but once I got a waft of the dish, I knew I was in trouble. I'm very sensitive when it comes to fish so the smell (more than the taste) was off putting. My wife was fine with it and enjoyed the dish, but if you aren't a fan of fishy fish, then I would skip it. The lomi salmon looked very much like pico de gallo with the addition of salt-cured salmon. My boys loved this dish because they love salmon but again I would steer clear if you are a seafood weakling like me. Alas, we come to poi. Had my hopes up since I love taro but the texture and a bit of sourness from fermentation deterred me from trying too much of it. I'm glad we tried it but not sure that we would get it again.

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

The salmon belly is cut into bite-sized pieces so I didn't have to worry about using a knife to cut it. I usually try salmon belly where it is usually seasoned lightly to bring out the natural flavor of the salmon, but Guava Smoked's salmon belly is just grilled in a way that makes the salmon sweet/crispy and still get traces of the salmon taste as well. The owner was very friendly and took the time to recommend dishes for us, including the laulau and lechon kawali. We also ordered the BBQ short ribs. Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.

Then someone wanted to change from rice to poi. I tried many times and no one answered. Their voice mailbox was full. We e ended going there to make the change. He gentleman looked like he was working be himself. We bads to wait almost a half hour for him to finish the order. 2. Price - the prices were higher than expected. All the plates were $26.00 and up. 3. Food - The poi was very tasty and fresh, although a bit watery. The lau lau had a lot of lean pork filling, not a lot of leaves. The long rice didn't have much chicken and was a bit watery too. We enjoyed the sweet potato. There was also lomi salmon, haupia onion and chili pepper water. 4. As mentioned before there isn't much parking. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there. Overall the food and service was OK. The price was a bit high.
