This is a downtown lunch spot there is no restaurant parking just street parking available if you have a loading zone sticker. HOURS M-F 530a-2pm Mini plate: $7.50, Reg $9 and mixed plate $10. They also have affordable breakfast specials for $5. They have a daily menu and Daily specials that rotate. I had to check this place out as I keep seeing a line out the door with local people so must be Good! The ladies inside were friendly and efficient looks like the food is cooked prior and kept warm so the plates come out very quickly. Inside is clean and has about 5 tables of you want to dine in. Most people are taking out instead. I tried the mini hamburger steak it wasn't bad definitely homemade and the gravy wasn't too thick or salty. They can do all toss salad for .50 more. I had some coworkers pick this half portion of beef curry up for me and it was such a great pick for a cold rainy day! This filled me up and warmed me up too! I only got a half portion too. I'm glad because I would have eaten all of a whole serving and regretted it - it was that good. My favorite lunch place downtown. They have the kind of food I grew up with. Real home style food. Everything is so good and it is such a good deal. Seems like it's getting harder to find these kinds of places so I'm really grateful they are around. I've had the Baked Spaghetti, Fried Chicken, Pastele stew, Roast pork, Lau Lau plate, Furikake Salmon, Meat loaf, Mushroom chicken, Mushroom pork chop, hamburger steak, and their deluxe breakfast platter. I'm very disappointed with Tsukenjo. I've been eating here for over 30 years and they always provided good value. But today is another story. I only order the roast pork with gravy all over and you can tell the portions are always hardy. Today's portion shrunk by 25-30% and the price increased???? WTF. I hope the owner realizes longtime customers are not lolo and we know what to expect which is why we continue to go there. If the value is going down I might as well go someplace else. I like how this place is clean and to the point. Everyday has a set menu and u already know what they are serving for the day. The prices are not bad for the amount they serve. I love how they have breakfast early morning and a variety to choose from. Youll either see me here for breakfast or wednesdays for lunch for the baked spaghetti. Its my favorite with toss salad. 3 stars for ono grinds at a price that's hard to beat in downtown! Read below for a detailed review of each component. I ordered a combo plate (any two choices for $10). I got roast pork and guava chicken. Roast pork: It's actually roast pork with gravy. I didn't know that when I ordered it so I was honestly not thrilled about it. It reminded me of turkey and gravy. There's nothing wrong with it; it tasted good for what it was, and if you like roast pork with gravy, I recommend! But since it's not my fave, had I known it was "with gravy" I would've ordered something else. Guava chicken: I really enjoyed this! Baked chicken with a guava glaze, the chicken was "fall of the bone" tender and the guava glaze was just the right amount of sweet. I would def order this again! Service: As you would expect it to be. It was a little odd that the person who takes your order is the person working in the back (she would shout to the front asking what you want to order), while the person up front was just responsible for processing payment. At times I saw that both people were talking to the customer at the same time (back person asking what kind of salad and front person telling customer what they owed). In that regard, I would say if they had the first person in charge of taking the order and processing payment, it would be a smoother ordering experience. Ambiance: There are tables inside to sit at but it was actually kind of warm in there. Most people just did take out, which is what I ended up doing as well. Also, the front door is actually on the back side (not the door along Bishop St.) but there's no sign. It's just a locked door with a sign that says "We're Open." I'd recommend they put a sign advising patrons that the entrance is on the other side so customers don't look crazy trying to open a locked door (like I did, haha). Overall experience: I really enjoyed the guava chicken and like the fact that you can "combo" any of their entrees (even the specials). I'm looking forward to trying out other things. First thing first, they take credit card now! Okay now that that is out of the way, I was really bummed that they moved from their Cooke Street location since it was close to work but I rarely went there because they were cash only. Now that they are on bishop they have a nice lil spot that I can go to when I eat with friends working in town. They have doors off of bishop as well as from fort street. There are 4 tables with 3-4 seats each. They have specials that change daily with mini, regular, and mixed plate sizes. We had a mix plate of guava chicken and hamburger steak, so good!!! Mix plate is $10 and regular is $9, can't remember how much the mini was. Also no tax!! I feel their prices are a little smaller than when they were on Cooke but it is still a lot of food! I was very comfortably stuffed. Definitely having this as a suggestion when meeting up with friends. Oh and it got really busy around 12:15. read more

So many selections and Debbie was very patient in helping us decide what we needed, working within a budget. I was amazed at how much food our $300 bought. And the selection was fantastic! Love the meatloaf and garlic chicken and my boss who is a mac salad aficionado said this is hands down "broke da mouth" mac salad. DROWNING IN GREASE Frolic really hyped up the opening of this local favorite on Bishop Street. Never having tried their food, I felt I needed to be a good local and give it a try. I ordered a mini Shoyu Chicken, how can you go wrong with that! First impression when I opened my plate- the Mac salad looked odd- the mayo looked broken. The noodle was undercooked and tasted flavorless. The chicken was drowning in fat but managed to be bone dry. It had a weird aftertaste- almost bitter. Sorry but this was definitely the worst shoyu chicken I've ever eaten. If you can't get that right, I have no confidence in the rest of the menu. read more

I only knew them from the old location & only had their Roast Pork (yummers dat one) plate lunch. The other side was out of the Sausage Patties I loved there... This may be a hard place to get to if you don't work downtown, you'll have to find parking a few blocks down the street or park in nearby structures. This is my go to lunch spot for the Shoyu Chicken! It's probably my favorite Shoyu Chicken ever and it's at such a reasonable price. They have specials every day and consistent menu items. The mini plates are $7.50 (2 chicken thighs for Shoyu Chicken, one scoop rice and toss salad or macaroni salad). The regular plates are $9, and you can mix two entree items in your regular plate for $10. There is no mini lau lau plate though. They also serve breakfast in the morning, but not all day. Those prices seem really reasonable as well and I'd love to try that sometime! I always keep coming back because I like the service and staff a lot. It's a really quick lunch and there's always a variety of stuff. They run out of their daily specials sometimes so you'll have to check the white board inside. Pretty solid lunch and inexpensive. For only $10 I got a mixed plate that came with 2 large pieces of chicken and a portion of pasteles stew. The stew had a good flavor. However I would prefer it without the green bell peppers. Most locals make it without the peppers. I like the use of Chinese parsley. It gave the dish a fresh and bright flavor. The meat was tender and had a great flavor. The oven baked chicken had a really nice taste to it. However one of the pieces was tender and the other one was overlooked. The gravy was a nice compliment. Overall this is a pretty good plate lunch for only $10. Next time I'd like to try the beef curry and chicken cutlet. read more

I work nearby and decided to check it out a month ago, and I returned today. Both meals were consistently good. You should try whatever local breakfast suits your taste, but I highly recommend getting it with fried rice for an extra 50¢. The fried rice is actually spiced nicely with some black pepper, and it has ample morsels of breakfast meat and green onions. They're a friendly group there, but keep in mind that meats are not substitutable, so prior to ordering, find the combination of breakfast meats that suits your taste. read more

My coworker and I decided to try here for breakfast. Very inexpensive Breakfast Menu. I had the Early Bird Special -- 1 egg, 2 viennas, 1 port saus, 1 ham and 1 scoop rice. This is what was on the menu. Cashier rang me up and I paid. When I got it, I had "1 egg," 1 vienna, 1 port saus, "1 spam" and 1 scoop rice. Told the owner, and she said -- we don't have ham so we give the spam and 1 vienna. I said, if I knew this, I would have ordered something else. She responded, "you want to change it."? As if I was at fault. I said NO as I was not waiting after 6 people already waiting for their food. One cook with a small area stove. First of all, if you are going to change your menu item, you need to inform your customers. Secondly, she gave no apology. My coworker ordered her breakfast plate with FRIED RICE. Unfortunately, she did not check it before we left, and when she opened, it had REGULAR STEAMED RICE. She paid for the fried rice. Cashier had no clue how to organize herself. It costs slightly more compared to back then, but price point is very affordable considering that the plate is packed well. I've ordered the baked spaghetti on two occasions now - once as a mini and another time as a regular plate. Both times with all tossed salad. Salad was fresh and came with a refreshing vinaigrette dressing. The mini satisfies my usual hunger and on a day when I was really hungry, the regular plate did justice! Conveniently located for people like myself who work in downtown Honolulu. Otherwise, parking would either be hit or miss on the streets or for a nominal fee at a nearby building. Many years ago the original location of Tsukenjo was on Beretania street next to the Goodwill store.Those were the days before fast food franchises.My workplace was nearby and on certain days anyone at work could order from Tsukenjo.This seems like a lot of work taking many orders but it wasn't. The only thing everybody would order was the roast pork plate. They didn't deliver so somebody would pick it up.Sometimes we would have 20 plus orders. The way that Tsukenjo would prepare it was unique, the roast pork was chopped in tiny pieces that made it easier to eat. The portions of pork were huge and the plate was overflowing .And it cost a little over $3.00!! Tsukenjo was tiny and had a few tables with bench seating.I'm sure they had other meals but we were hooked on the roast pork plate! Local comfort food WIN. Came by on a weekday just around 11am on a Tuesday and not much of a line! Everything is made and ready to be put into plates. Like any other local party on the island. With the cashier taking care of another customer Aunty called out to me making another plate what I wanted so she could keep going. I ordered the guava and oven baked chicken. Mix plate is only $10 for two choices. I got two chicken breast of each. It was sort of a lot. You get the choice of toss/Mac salad like you would anywhere else. The oven baked chicken's skin was still a bit crisp and is your regular oven baked herbed chicken. The guava chicken is where they got me. My best to explain it is if you went to public school in Hawaii in the 90s to early 2000s it tastes exactly like Oriental Chicken and I would ALWAYS love lunch when they had it. God bless that chicken. It's sort of what I expect with shoyu chicken. Flavorful with a very light glaze of sweetness and guava is PERFECT. UGH!!! I was pretty meh about my experience at Tsukenjo. I'd been meaning to try the Cooke st location but never made it there so I figured I'd have to go to the new location. I got a mix plate of meatloaf and baked spaghetti. Both were just disappointingly dry, even though the meatloaf was doused in gravy. The meatloaf doesn't' seem baked, they're really just sort of tough hamburger patties that have been griddled some too. I like meatloaf because it's fluffy and moist, and this wasn't it. Generous size "half stack." Wish they sold drinks (juices would be good at breakfast), but they only have 4 or 5 sodas/tea/water/punch canned drinks in frig. Oh Yeah, another local fast food eatery! Good tasting menu selections! Not a place I will want to eat my breakfast or lunch...it's hot inside. There is a need for an air conditioner. I was disappointed with their pull pork... lots of fat and very oily. I got their breakfast with luncheon meat. The meat had gray spots on it and I wondered if it was spoiled (tossed it!.) Their mushroom chicken was yummy! Overall, I was not impressed with their set up because their food are in chaffing trays! Not sure what to make of this.
