Headed into Blaine and Bellingham for the day and decided to stop for something to eat along the way. I'm always a big fan of breakfast and looking at past reviews. This seemed like a really great stop near the border which was a win as I was nearing hangry status. Funny enough, as we crossed the crosswalk in front of the restaurant the server was outside and happily greeted us and welcomed us in. It's a sort of long and narrow building with the cutest and most eclectic decor around. There was a young girl at the bar as we came in eating cut up pancakes, watching football, and I felt like I had hopped into a cousins kitchen for an impromptu brunch. We walked down the long, narrow hallway, passing cute signs and pictures before the restaurant opened up into a still small dining area with about six tables in front of a huge window that overlooked the harbor and the train tracks. It was quaint and cozy, and exactly what we were looking for. We both ordered a pretty basic breakfast. Mine was two eggs, potatoes, and toast and my partner got the same but with meat. Our server recommended the sausage patty, and it did not disappoint. The potatoes were out of this world slightly under seasoned, but nothing a little salt and pepper and hot sauce couldn't fix, but they were absolutely cooked to perfection so any under seasoning was easily forgettable. The potatoes were what I would normally call pan fried potatoes, but they were the perfect combination of soft and crunchy, and you could tell they were made with so much butter, which was much nicer in flavor than when these are cooked in heavy oil. The sourdough toast was delicious and the eggs were perfectly cooked. They definitely seemed like they were basic eggs and it would've been nice if they were a little more higher quality, but I recognize that that would've driven the overall price up. Food came out really quickly and coffees and waters were filled regularly. Our server was super attentive and you could hear her having conversations with regulars throughout our visit and it was an overall grade vibe. If you like hot sauce, I definitely recommend you try their Viking blood hot sauce. It's made locally and was absolutely delicious. Brought a nice smoky flavor without burning your face off. The meal was a little spendy. I think it was about $17 for the non-meat version and a couple extra bucks for the sausage patty. Coffee was good, but nothing to write home about. I was pleased that they accept cash or card as some of the previous reviews showed that their cash only but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. We will definitely be back! read more

Because the owners the waiters and everyone there was so welcoming & kind! & so fast !! The food is incredibly delicious! You seriously have to come here!! Disclaimer: the seating area is small! It's such a cool, small space! We went for breakfast on a Sunday before heading back home in Seattle. Thankfully our friends arrived before us and could get a table, it was very busy! It took a little over an hour to get our food, but man, was it worth it. The food was delicious! I had the Denver omelet with 1 pancake. WOW, was that omelet packed with flavor, so good. The pancake was a delicious buttermilk. The food was down home, country style, and just so delicious. The rest of my table ordered a meat omelet; pancake breakfast with a side of tater tots and the corn hash scramble with eggs. It was all very good. I would highly recommend breakfast here, but make sure to get there early as it fills up quick with what seems to be locals. But if not, it is definitely worth a wait. They do a great job there and the staff was so friendly. The space is filled with different signs and posters. It's a good read while you wait. read more

My husband and I came to Monte's because of the great reviews, and returned twice because of the excellent coffee, breakfast and people there (not only the cooks and server, but the friendly customers as well)! We had omelets, over medium eggs, sausage, bacon, waffle, biscuit, homestyle potatoes, French toast, etc., and absolutely everything was delicious. We had a view from this historic building below to train tracks and the marina and north toward the Peace Arch at the Canadian border. The vibe of the place was perfect: friendly, good music, entertaining decor, even some light-hearted banter, just like you'd get with good friends and family. The third visit we had was especially fun: since the restaurant is small, the server asked if one of the customers could share our table. Yes! We sat with one of the regulars (hi, John, here's your 2 cents!), and learned about his family and history in the area as well. Just a really good time. I was pleasantly surprised when I had the biscuits and gravy. I have been looking for some good biscuits & gravy for over a year.. I gave up until now.. the biscuits look like they make them there or have local bakery make them. It looked like the biscuit was made maybe in a thin pan and cut to shape? I forgot to ask.. anyway the combo of gravy and tasty potatoes.. along with an egg... soooo yummy! And the service and view were really nice.. It was fun to read all of the funny signs/ plaques.. It was Father's Day morning. We only had to wait about ten minutes for a table for four. The table rocked! But not in that good way. Took a while to have our order taken. The folks who sat down after we did were asked for their order before we were. If an hour's wait for your food isn't too long for you, you would have been ok this morning. The bacon was thin for what I've experienced in restaurants. White bread toast should be brown before buttered. And should crunch, not be floppy. Monte's a funky little place which we like. Some might consider that the owner's political views are off the wall but they are actually right there on the wall in several places. The service was friendly if lacking a bit in timeliness. It shouldn't be up to the customer to make sure that tickets are split on a table with two different couples. If your restaurant takes cash only, it's a good idea that the cash machine you have on-site actually works. This was our second visit in the last 8 months. We're anxious to check out other breakfast spots in Blaine next time. read more
