Best Italian sub I have ever had! Great food, great ingredients, and great staff. Go out of your way to eat here!

This place has been on my "to do" list for a while now, and I finally went for it. I'm glad I did. I got a couple of sandwiches to go: a Southside Gourmet Italian (what they're known for, according to the person answering the phone) and a Tucci's Turkey. Both were great. Lots of places use Boar's Head meat and cheese, so it's hard to stand out. Tucci's does it with good bread and dressings. These were great subs. Not unreasonable prices, either. A few dollars more than a big chain, but well worth it for the quality. read more

The quality of the meats is phenomenal and the bread is imported from Pennsylvania, but the price for a whole sub is very heavy at 16 dollars. They have daily weekday specials with soda and chips for 10 dollars but it's only a half sandwich, still a great experience, just be ready to spend a bit more than expected. read more

Hard to say why a lot of other people give places like this good reviews. I guess they look like they have money or something and get treated fair and square. The manager is a jerk. Every single time I've been there he's been rude to me. Once I went into the bathroom before ordering, he knew I was in there and started rapping on the door and then took paper towels in afterwards like that was the reason he was doing it. No, he just wanted to rattle me, to check up on why I was in there. That's rude and an invasion of privacy. But there's plenty of places like this that single out a certain customer and then act nice and gentlemanly to everyone else. What his problem with me is, I don't know, but I'm sure it's a pattern, why else would he do it? If you don't like your job then just be a man and quit instead of singling out your customers. My son who is usually a very picky eater loved the meatball sub. We had them hold the onions and peppers which they did kindly. Everyone who works there is very friendly and they brought it out to our car when it was done. They wear a face mask at all times and ask customers to do the same which I appreciate. I have been going to this location for many years. They make the best sandwiches in Austin. I have tried every item on the menu and they are all very good. Fried bologna! Great sandwich/subs! Small, clean spot located within the shopping center near Auto Zone. The staff greeted my husband and I as soon as we entered even though they were busy. We ordered the South Austin Club and Class Bologna (added Salami) 1/2 subs. For one, the 1/2 subs are more than enough to feed 1 person and then some. The food was fresh, bread was soft and there were a variety of drinks and chips to choose from. The only negative thing I can say is that the floors were dirty but it looked as if they just swept and someone forgot to sweep up the dirt pile by the end of the counter. After reading Yelp reviews I wanted to try this place. These sandwiches "suck" just like all the other places around here. Precut cold cuts, boring bread, no gloves. I don't think people in Austin have a frame of reference for a good sandwich. Go to Central Grocery in New Orleans or a multitude of places in NY and find out what a sandwich is supposed to be before evaluating mediocrity. There's something magical about a beautifully assembled sandwich. Just think about it. How many sub sandwiches have you ordered that when you unwrap the sucker, there's lettuce and oil and onion all over the wrapper? How many times do you take a bite of one and lettuce and tomato fall out the bottom? If you're like me, a lot of sandwiches, a lot of times. Not the case at Tucci's. I know what you're thinking, "what the hell does it matter how they assemble a sandwich?" Well you're probably justified for thinking that. I'm sort of going fan-girl on this sandwich assembly. But hear me out. Instead of two pieces of bread, they take one roll and slice it almost all the way through so the stuff doesn't spill out one side (already starting out smart there). Then they lay the meat on, pile all of your fixings onto the meat, and wrap the meat over all of your fixings so the folded side is facing out of the side of the roll that is cut open. If you can't visualize that, imagine somebody taking a folded piece of paper, and another folded piece of paper with a bunch of ripped paper in it, and sticking the ripped-paper-holding-paper into the other paper, trapping all of the folded paper in between. That is essentially what they did with the meat and the bread here. GENIUS. No messy, disgusting sandwich. Just one solid package of cheese, meat, and deliciously fresh vegetable toppings. No grossly limp lettuce, no oddly floppy pickles, no soggy bread. Just plain tasty. I definitely dig it. read more

Have been coming here for Years, Will not be coming back after waiting 30+ minutes for a Cold Sandwhich today. It's pretty infuriating to watch the very next person in line leave with thier Hot Sandwhich/ Order a full 20 minutes before I recieved my food. I stood at the front of the line, at the counter for 10 minutes before I was even acknowleged as the line grew behind me. The good ole boys working there need a helping hand with their customer skills thats for sure. My old landlord was telling me about this place recently and I put it on my list to try, but kind of forgot about it. Tonight, at a loss for what I wanted to eat for dinner, I decided to give it a shot, and oh my. I'm glad I did. The Gourmet consisted of prosciutto, capicola, ham, salami and provolone. Top that off with lettuce, tomato, cherry peppers and pickle and wow. The bread is absolutely great as well. This is the sandwich my dad used to make for us all the time and it's a favorite of mine. Tucci's totally does it justice. Oh, did I mention the quality of the ingredients? Boar's Head baby. I love that stuff. And the cherry peppers were super fresh and crunchy, not all soaked and soggy as they can be. As I type this review, I'm also munching on a butterscotch Tastycake. Yes, you read right, TASTYCAKE! A big score for Tucci's, this will go in my regular rotation for sure. read more

I often knock stars off if an eatery takes too long to whip up something that barely curbs my ravenous hunger. That is only fair, right? This is the first sub in a while that I have truly enjoyed. This is also the only place that serves a grilled cheese sub into the foil open face when you order it to go. Weird. I waited near 20 minutes for a silly grilled cheese and was very impatient. They even ran out of the freaking soup at 12:40PM! All these negative thoughts went away from I dug into my sandwich. When I got it, I was astounded. This "PawPaw's Grilled Cheese" was amazing. I watched them assemble it, and it seemed so simple. You take toasted bread, griddled fresh vegetables, 2 plain cheeses and slap it all together; how good could this sandwich be? Well, pretty dang delicious. Sure, many a sandwich joint claim the "We Proudly Serve Boar's Head" saying, and I usually just look at it and think, I will not fully enjoy your meat and bread until you make your meats or breads from scratch; or you better have some dang amazing sauces or toppings. Well, Tucci's did not fall into any of those categories. Nope, Tucci's serves good ol' mediocre Boar's Head and plain fresh veggies. How does this combination of grilled jalapenos, onions, tomatoes, Vermont cheddar (meaning, ordinary stuff), and white American cheese (nice, processed plain cheese taste so dang good? I tried Tucci's today after work, and for $8, I was very happy with my Paw Paw's grilled cheese and Zapp's Voodoo chips. The interior is unassuming and basic, with four or five smallish tables and chairs and a giant flat screen TV blasting daytime talk shows. Next time, I'll probably take my food to go because it's a little cramped when there are other diners vying for space. The menu featured both cold and hot subs, and the friendly woman at the counter recommended the Paw Paw's as a good meat-free option. It was ultra cheesy, nice and toasty, and even better with a few Voodoo chips crushed in. I would give them 3 1/2 stars, really, but I'm rounding up for the good service. The food is good, too, so if you're looking for a quick and cheap lunch spot, you can't go wrong with Tucci's. read more

I wanted to update my review. Took my tween daughter a few weeks ago. And you know how those almost a teenager kids can be. Why must they be so unhappy right? So she orders her sub...very grumpy like. She takes a bite, and she actually SMILED. Repeat! SHE SMILED! She takes another huge bite, and has ranch dressing all over her face..and doesnt even ATTEMPT to wipe it off. Between bites, she states " THIS IS THE BEST SUB I HAVE EATEN IN MY LIFE!" granted, she's only 12. But still. So after she was done with her sub, she ended up with ranch dressing on her hoodie, but she was the happiest Ive seen her in a longtime. THANKS TUCCI'S!!!! Let me start off by saying the staff was very nice. The sandwich I got was their special turkey sandwich, regular size on wheat. It had some peppers on it and some garlic mayo. Overall it was a good sandwich for what it was.They slice their boar's head meat at the beginning of the day. This is why I'm rating this place so low. A regular 6 inch-ish sub is $7-8 here, which is a bit absurd when you compare to similar places like Jersey Mikes, which is half the price almost and they slice the meat when you order it. They also give you more meat...I was still hungry after eating my sub at Tucci's. I won't be back because it's not worth what you are paying. I ended up spending $9 on a decent sandwich and chips (no drink). I can get a way better lunch for that price at other places. read more

Finally! Finally I've found my Austin sandwich shop. It took 5 years and I had to go through awful national chains like Subway and mediocre local shops like Thundercloud to get here. I tried Tucci's a few weeks ago as a result of a long-held Groupon, and after doing so I kicked myself for not cashing in on the Groupon sooner. The sandwiches are great. Tucci's uses Boar's Head deli meats and you can taste the quality. I've tried the ovengold turkey, cajun turkey, and everroast chicken (I avoid eating red meat, but if I didn't I'd try some of the other more authentic Italian sandwiches). I also tried Tucci's special Chicken Parmesan sandwich, which was excellent (kudos on the spicy marinara sauce). My recommendation (considering my no-red meat limitation) is a cold two-meat (ovengold turkey and cajun turkey) on wheat prepared Italian style (provolone, oil, vinegar, oregano) with fresh cut jalapenos on the back half (that's right, they do fresh jalapenos, banana peppers, and hotsweet cherry peppers). I try not to eat chips often, but if/when you do decide to go the that route, Tucci's stocks Zapp's (the good stuff) so at least it will be worth it. The interior of the shop is very basic, but if you're coming here you're coming for the sandwiches, not for the decor. I talked to the owner (he actually works the line at the shop sometimes) one of the times that I came in. It was very apparent to me that he had tremendous enthusiasm and pride for his product and his shop. He told me that he only patronizes local places because he values the quality and accountability that local places bring. Tucci's only has two locations (I've only been to the Oak Hill location) and it's nice to see/hear that a local business owner is walking the walk.f read more

We stopped here on our way out of town. We originally wanted pizza, but we're too impatient to wait (well my boyfriend was). So, we drove by & decided to give these sandwiches a try. My boyfriend ordered the Cuban which he said was fantastic but could've used more spice & will order the sandwich again but with banana peppers. I ordered the chicken salad on wheat- toasted. I wasn't too impressed but will give this place another chance (maybe when I'm more in the mood for a sandwich). Tried it today. Way to expensive for a fast food sandwich. It was $51 for my husband, 2 toddler grandkids and myself. The food is good, but not worth $51 when you order at a counter, I did give a small tip. My bread was not fresh. The pickles are great. The portions are good. So maybe share. read more

I'm amazed at how good the reviews are for this place. The sub I had was mediocre at best. Once again, Austinites, you've shown you have no idea how good a sandwich can truly be. Freshly baked bagel-crusted bread? Not even close. It comes out of a bag, is flavorless and mushy. Think thicker/larger version of a wheat hot dog bun. Even Subway has better bread. I got the eggplant sub. The eggplant was mushy, overcooked, and super oily. The sweet peppers were waxy and lacked sweetness or spice but supplied their own additional oil to add to the mess. Cheese was flavorless. There was no interesting sauce to make up for the flavors it promised to deliver - probably because the thing was already dripping a swimming pool of oil into the paper-lined tray. Nothing in Austin has come close to Homeslice in quality of subs. Potbelly does a pretty decent job - at least they have really good ingredients and tasty peppers. Which Wich does an OK job too, but they offer far too many options without a chef's touch. Oh Dibella's, when will you migrate to Texas to show them how its done? read more

This sub place is awesome. The fact that they use Boar's Head sandwich meat is noticeably better. I've lived all over the U.S., including the Northeast, I would put this sub up to any that I have ever eaten. Yes, Austinites, that includes Thundercloud. I have had the club, and the Gourmet Italian thus far, and will be back to try more. I want to try the hot capicolla, and the sausage and peppers when it get a little cooler. The sub preparer, forgive me that I don't remember his name, gave me a bit of the Italian beef today too... I can't wait to try that one too!!
