I have been taking my kids here for 14 years. I have four kids. My youngest son needs quite a bit of work. I let them know we were not comfortable with full sedation and they terminated his care because we don't agree with their treatment plan. My son was overstimulated on his last visit. There was a child screaming in the other room and that set the tone for his experience. So, now he's basically traumatized. It wasn't an issue of pain, it was an issue of impatience and lack of care of a child who is overstimulated from the kid screaming and all the stuff going on in his mouth. It felt like a slap in the face, being told they couldn't see him anymore. It took me a few hours to process. This response to a parent being legitimately concerned, she even stated that it's a hard decision to make, is appalling and unprofessional. There are thousands of kids who need special care and who, for medical reasons, are unable to be fully sedated. Our final experience here has been disappointing. Although, my son is quite happy he doesn't have to go back there ever again. read more

The staff is nice the place is clean, but this place is a nightmare for anyone one who has sensory disorders. There is one room with multiple beds for cleanings all at the same time and no slotted time for doing younger children and babies. They line all the parents up on one bench squish together and staff ends up tripping over family members closest to the exit, there is NO privacy and you can't hear the Hygienist or the dentist talking over other conversations or screaming children. Had another amazing visit yesterday with Dr. Laila! She is tops in her profession and treats my daughter as if her own. Her expertise and ability to fully explain each procedure and tool she is about to use places my daughter at ease. There are no surprises. It's just pediatric dentistry, right? Well, each visit is an emotional one for me because I love how the staff dotes on my daughter. Her concern and comfort is of the utmost concern to them. Used to be great. Not anymore. My son (3 currently) went here when he was still 2/2.5. Absolutely loved it, great experience. He had an appointment yesterday and was excited to go to the Dentist. My wife took him there, arrived approx. 5 min before appointment, and waited in the car, as instructed by the signs/reporting instructions for COVID/dentistry. She waited a few minutes past her appointment time when someone came out to greet her and bring them in for the appointment. However, they stopped her short of even entering the door, when they noticed my 4 month old in tote. When asked why my wife couldn't come in with the 4 month old, she was told "our dentist doesn't like a lot of foot traffic due to COVID". She was then "reassured" that she could sit in the car with the 4 month old, while our 3 year old son went into the facility with complete strangers to have his teeth examined/cleaned. Again, they "reassured" her that if he called out for her or they needed her, that they could use "walkie-talkies" to the front desk staff, and that staff would come grab her from the parking lot. She then asked if she could call me, to which the person helping her said "well how long is it going to take"...which is ironic, because they didn't come to escort my wife until after the appointment time had passed. So not only does my 4 month old infant not walk (foot traffic statement), but per the CDC, the infection rates and transmissibility percentages of COVID in that age group are so incredibly low (1-1.5%, sometimes lower). The facility was concerned of a 4 month old transmitting COVID to a staff member or other patient in the back exam/cleaning rooms, and furthermore, they were worried about her transmitting it to another patron in the waiting room. That's correct, my wife couldn't even wait in the waiting room with our infant. Lastly, it's likely illegal for them to even suggest this, as a 3 year old cannot provide consent, which may have needed to be given during the exam/cleaning. I asked the office manager if there was any actual evidenced based reasons for their decision of this that she could provide me, she couldn't I work as a primary care medical provider (not a dentist) in a busy family practice clinic. There are several people in our waiting rooms, (wearing masks, socially distancing, etc.) as well as a lot of times, multiple people in the exam rooms..to include infants. Guess what? No cases of COVID have EVER been traced back to that. If infants were such a mask, why are there ZERO state mandates for them to wear a mask, and ZERO mandates for infants to wear a mask on plane travel where they're sitting 6 inches away from someone else, let alone 6 feet. I can't see this as anything other than discrimination. What do single parents do? Or parents where the spouse is deployed to a foreign land? They're just supposed to "figured it out" based on an entirely emotional and non-scientific decision by the owners/dentists? Needless to say, we will be taking our business elsewhere and telling every last person we know in our community, to NOT take their children there. Maybe they'll rethink their "protocols" and base them on facts and not feelings. read more

We went to Tucson Smiles on a recommendation of a friend. My daughter needed some dental work done. On our first visit, we saw Dr. Priya Abramian who laid out the planned procedure for us. This dentist office has the option for oral sedation (drinking the sleepy juice). We opted for that because my daughter is extremely nervous in the dentist chair. So, we scheduled the appt. The day of the appt, my daughter ate a little bit of breakfast while I was in the shower (she wasn't supposed to eat). Upon realizing this, I immediately called the office to reschedule. The receptionist was nice about it and transferred our phone call to another person. This person did not give a name or title and became extremely curt on the phone when I explained what happened. Between her heavy sighs of inconveniencing her, she rescheduled us, asked if we needed anything else, and then promptly hung up the phone on me. I drove from Sahuarita to Rita Ranch to personally speak with an office manager. The OM was surprised by the behavior of that staff member and promised to investigate. I took my daughter's X-rays and cancelled further appts with Tucson Smiles. Today, I received a letter (3 weeks post appt) signed by one of the dentists stating that they will no longer be treating my daughter. No apology, no explanation for their staff's behavior. The establishment is very clean, the staff is very nice,although the front desk lady didn't bother to acknowledge me after standing right in front of her for close to 10 minutes as she was on the phone. She didn't even bother to say a quick "I'll be right with you," zilch. Dr. Hirshaw was great! I have been going to Tucson smiles for a few years and I should have went with my instincts after the first major procedure my daughter needed and took her else where. The first incident happen when she needed two teeth extracted. She was 6 years old and they wanted to give her nitrous sedation and an oral sedation. I didn't think that was necessary to do both and I wasn't comfortable with it. (I had just heard of a child who was given too much and was in a coma) I was told that the Dr insisted and would not do the procedure without it. At that point my instincts told me that it was more about the money and not so much about the child. But I went against my instincts and continued with the Dr's recommendation. Then about a year later they needed to put a crown on her baby molar and I asked if she could get a white crown instead of the stainless steel and they said that in order to do the white she would need to be put out because the procedure was too extensive. So I reluctantly opted for the stainless steel. Now, less than 2 years later, my daughter needs to get that same crown replaced. They say the crown is too big and is impeding on the growth of the adult molar coming in right next to it. My insurance will not cover a second crown for the same tooth so I need to pay out of pocket for the crown. I chose them because they are within my dental network, and they have a contract with my insurance company and have to abide by a set price. I was told by Tucson Smiles, that if my insurance is not covering the crown they can charge me their normal cost for patients who don't have insurance. In my opinion that is not right and extremely unethical. Had my insurance covered the second crown they would be getting a maximum of $164. But now that my insurance is not going to cover it they are charging me $269. Unbelievable! All that for a tooth that will eventually fall out. When it is all said and done they will have made $433 on a single baby tooth and that doesn't even include the nitrous that they insisted on giving my child the first time around. So not only am I having to pay for a second crown, I am told that I need to pay even more the second time around. All that says to me is that they do not stand behind their work and will not take responsibility for their work and if their work needs to be repaired you need to pay even more the second time. Makes you question the job they did the first time around and whether or not it was done improperly on purpose. I took my daughter to get a second opinion and the new dentist did not replace the crown. He simply put in a orthodontic rubber band between the two teeth to try to get the adult molar to move back just a bit. It took a few weeks but it eventually moved and now the molar is coming in nicely without any problems. Not to mention he didn't even charge me for it either. read more

My daughter saw Dr Tor and overall we had a nice experience. The office is very child-friendly and accommodating to nervous kids. The person who really helped calm my daughter was named Rebecca. She was so helpful and patient! There are TVs mounted to the ceiling so that the kids can watch a movie while getting a cleaning or check-up. After the visit, the kids get a token to spend in the rubber ball machine. My daughter did great and we will be back! read more

My son really likes going here. On our way to his appointment today he stated, "I'm so excited to get there." When I asked why, he said, "the people are just so nice, I really like them." Our boys have been cared for by Dr. Hishaw at Tucson Smiles for years. We have never had anything but positive experiences. Even my son with significant anxiety, walks back to the exam area independently and confidently, knowing he will be cared for in a gentle and respectful manner. Dr. Hishaw engages in fun and relevant conversation with the boys, and teaches them how to best care for their teeth, without shaming them. Highly recommend this dentist office for kids! I have 4 boys all with different needs and they accomodate and listen everytime. They are super kid friendly and always easy to work with. I cannot express enough how thrilled we were with Tucson Smiles. My 7-year old daughter needed four teeth extracted. We had a bad experience at a different dentist, which resulted in no teeth being extracted, only tears. I was so worried about the added anxiety that would bring to this visit. The staff were all very friendly. Dr. Priya was amazing. She was up front with me. She told me that it might only be possible to remove two teeth per visit, but that she would try to get all four if my daughter was handling it well (she wound up getting all four done). She gave me a printed cost estimate sheet (something not provided by our other dentist). She spoke in a calm voice. She spoke of "magic air" not just "Nitrous Oxide" (it was an added bonus that this time the laughing gas had a pleasant smell). She didn't discredit things my daughter said (even if under this sedation, it is "pressure" not "pain" that one feels, no one wants to continually be told that they are not hurting, when they feel that they are). She was patient with my daughter, and gave her breaks when she needed them. She gently pushed on my daughter's shoulder to show her what she was going to do in her mouth. She let her know when she was almost done. She listened patiently to her when she had her stop (many times) to repeat that she was tired. She kept encouraging her and telling her how good she was doing. This may sound silly, but you could tell she has children of her own, and has developed the skills to make their experiences as positive as possible. read more
