I remember seeing this spot everyday when I was going to Mira Mesa High School which is on the other side of the fence.  In those days there was a Picnic N Chicken here.  I miss the delicious fried chicken.  Now it's Tlum Seafood which is clean and shiny. Tried a carne asada and shrimp taco.  Corn tortilla had a mild flavor and was unobtrusive.  Shrimp had a mild shrimp flavor.  Carne asada had a bold flavor which I loved.  Beef was tender and almost juicy.  Excellent protein to tortilla ratio. Also tried a birrea taco.  Beef was tender and full of juices.  Flavor was very good.  Excellent beef to tortilla ratio. 2nd visit I ordered a whole fried red snapper.  Skin was crispy and the red snapper was fresh and tender.  Seasoning tasted salt based.  Flavor was pretty good.  My favorite red snapper preparation is deep fried with southern style batter.  Rice was moist and I liked the light flavor.  Flour tortilla was soft and had a nice fresh flavor. Talum Seafood is a solid spot for tacos and seafood.  Service was efficient and the staff nice.  The 2 tacos were a big lunch.  A bit pricey as it was almost $20 for 2 tacos.  For birrea tacos my fav spot is Mike's Red Tacos as I like their tortillas better and prefer the flavor of their birrea. read more

A seafood-focused taqueria has opened in the former space of Papa John's Pizza on this busy corner in the Mira Mesa neighborhood. Instead of having the word 'Mariscos' in its name, the business is called Tulum Seafood in honor of the Caribbean coastline of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. Because it took over a pizza shop, there was limited inside seating. Stools were set around the perimeter of a fenced outdoor front patio. The area was not covered though so you're completely exposed to the elements. Three menu screens hung above the service counter that were chock full of seafood offerings in the form of tostadas, ceviches, aguachiles, tacos, salads and entrees including a whole fried red snapper. My goal was to order a couple of the eleven listed tacos which included a birria and quesabirria if you wanted meat. From looking at what others received, the serving sizes were large which were reflected in the prices. My taco picks were a Fish (the least expensive at $7) and a Tia Lupe. The first contained a battered fish fillet with cabbage, pico de gallo, avocado slices, and zarandeada sauce which was a spicy chile marinade. The second was made up of smoked tuna, pinto beans, and avocado slices. Both were plated beautifully on individual black styrofoam trays. The toppings almost completely covered the fish on each tortilla. The tuna had plenty of smoky flavor which I preferred over the prototypical fried fish. The drive thru was fairly busy during my visit. Maybe that was a faster way of ordering and getting food from this place? I didn't have a long wait because of my small order, but that was not the case from what I observed with the customers who were ahead of me in the line. read more

Tulum just opened up recently and I tried it last week! It wasn't too bad, quality is good and the shrimps they offer are big and fresh! Got the mar y tierra fries and shrimp cocktail with octopus to go. The only thing the fries were lacking was more carne asada. They used a Chipotle sauce instead of sour cream, fresh guacamole and cotija cheese. The shrimp cococktail had generous amounts of seafood and was very fresh, so no complaints there! Hey, know, I do like a new Mexican eatery, and this one is great. I came in for breakfast and ordered two of the "al la Mexicana" breakfast tacos for $5.50 each. They were great. They came doubled wrapped in warm corn tortillas and generously filled with freshly scrambled eggs, grilled mozzarella cheese, chopped red, yellow, and green peppers, onions, and topped with freshly sliced avocado. The tacos were supposed to have beans, but they did not come with any. The tacos were great and were even better with the salsa quemada. The salsa quemada found at the salasa bar was terrific in flavor and a good medium heat. The service was very nice. The lady at the counter was friendly and helpful. I liked that they offered inside and outside seating. They offer a few breakfast items, but a lot of seafood items. I look forward to returning. We'll get those beans next time! read more

There was a pretty long wait. Also, our Tecu Taco ($6 fried taco with butterfly shrimp) was initially given to the customer before us. The customer walked the Tecu Taco over to the cashier with the plate uncovered, and said that he didn't order it. The cashier took it back and then 30 seconds later, he told us that our taco was ready. We were going to talk to him about it to request a new one, but had to leave quickly to make it to our next destination. On the plus side, the Mar y Tierra Papas Fritas ($18) was delicious! The fries tasted like they were double fried. It was the perfect crispiness on the outside, yet the inside was still soft. The shrimp and carne asada were cooked well and still juicy. The zarandeada sauce that came on the fries was a good accompaniment. There is a self-serve sauce bar, but we actually didn't need any additional sauce on the fries. read more

I went to that area of town to get some pastries and happened to see at the corner of my eye a seafood drive through place. The outside was eye catching with its the blue colors and red octopus sign. I have been craving a fish taco for a while now and decided to try the food here since they had the drive through why not. My order was made quickly and beautifully. I ordered one fish taco, and one birria taco. My daughter and I shared half each. The fish taco was battered and full of cabbage, pico de gallo, a flavorful sauce and fresh avocado. The taco was a bit hard to eat in the car so I would suggest waiting for home or finding a table . I was determined so I did it but it was a bit messy but sooooooo yummy. Each bite was filled with flavor and crunch from the battered taco and cabbage. The Birria taco was loaded with meat and topped with cilantro, onion and fresh avocado. Wow heard about this place via social media. The marlin taquitos is what piqued my interest. Honestly they melt in your mouth. Ceviche isn't easy to find unless you're down south in San Diego. Glad to have a new Mexican restaurant in Mira Mesa! Tulum specializes in seafood focused fishes, but they do have your standard meat options as well. I came in for a snack and ordered the Gobernador taco and it was delicious! It was pricey for a single taco but the portion was on the larger side and they seem to use high quality ingredients. The business seems to be mainly drive thru orders, however they have a small dining room inside and a patio space for dine in customers. They even have a happy hour special on beers. The tacos here are huge, they're hot, they're REALLY spicy, and they're amazing. The place is clean, but it's still being worked on, it's pretty much a WIP interior/exterior. It's got a drive through, too. I ate the Marlin Taco and I turned into a fish afterwards, that's how fishy it was, in a good way. The most amazing thing is that I didn't blow my rectum out from the spicy green sauce despite it ripping and tearing my tongue until it was done, so honestly just an impressive taco all around. The girl at the drive-tru was very nonchalant and rude. I've had this place bookmarked for a while and was finally in the Mira Mesa area. When I got to the intercom I had to repeat my order. She was talking to someone in the background and didn't seem to give me her full attention. Then when I got to the window she didn't bother to say hello, no smile and eye rolls. She just blurted out my order total and I payed for my order. I noticed the menu said the plate I ordered came with a drink. Which she didn't bother to mention or ask me what drink I wanted. I asked her what drinks they had and she blurted drinks very quickly under her breath. She seemed so annoyed that I asked. After that I told her to cancel my order. I'd rather go elsewhere where the service is friendlier. She really needs to have a better attitude if she's going to be face to face with customers. read more

I've ordered delivery from this place a lot, and the food is really good. I've had the marlin taquitos and the mar y tierra papas fritas, and they're both delicious. The mar y tierra papas fritas I'd especially recommend if you have an appetite, because the amount of food they give you is ridiculous. It is kind of expensive, currently $18 on doordash, but you'll probably have enough food left over for another meal. The primary downside is its unfortunate location. The parking lot is tiny and all of the spaces are angled to favor getting into the space from the street... but then when you get out of the space, you're either going to have to somehow manage like a U-turn in a very tiny space, or you're going to have to try to sneak through the drive-thru... which I can't recommend if you've got hot food that you just picked up, 'cause then you can be stuck behind someone who ordered at the drive thru, and it's more than a little annoying waiting for someone else to get their order when yours is cooling in your lap. that's why I just order delivery. I'd give it 4.5 out of 5 if i could, just -1/2 a star for the parking lot, everything else is great. P.S.: oh, one thing I would note: one of my friends doesn't like sour cream, and they seem to put it on a lot of their food, so if you're not a fan be sure to check before you place your order. Personally I like it on their food, I think it's a good contrast to their spicy salsa and it goes well with the guacamole, but my friend really doesn't like it so I figured I should mention it, just in case. read more

So ate here on a recent trip to SD after my brother said this place wasn't bad. It doesn't compare to Oscar's honestly. I got the rolled marlin tacos and eh, I didn't care for it so much. I find when proteins are stuffed into a rolled taco, the flavor becomes quite indiscriminate - it could be chicken, it could be beef or in this case, it could be neither! ‍I actually enjoyed the sour cream and guac on top more! The ceviche (we got the shrimp and pulpo) too wasn't bad, but not as good as Oscar's. The pulpo was nice and tender though, but I don't particularly care for cucumbers in my ceviche. From the looks of it, the tacos were huge, literally double the filling in one taco (with double tortilla, so literally you can make TWO tacos out of one). read more

I didn't know what to expect when I first ate here, but it was so good! The service was nice, food came out quickly, & quality of the food was fresh. When we came, it wasn't very busy so I assumed it wasn't going to be great. However, it picked up quickly after we sat down waiting for our food. We ordered the mixed ceviche & the fish ceviche. The tostada chips were crunchy & ceviche was amazing. We sat outside because we don't really like the tables they had inside. It was cold and super windy! Luckily they have heating lamps. Updating my review from 4 to 5 stars because everybody was pleasantly surprised with everything ordered. I brought the following to a potluck for 6 and it was plenty of food for about $83: - Gobernador Taco (Shrimp and Bell Peppers) - Marlin Taco - Pulpo Enamorado Taco (Octopus) - Camaron Enchilado Taco (Spicy Shrimp) - Ceviche de Camaron Curtido (Shrimp cured in lime Ceviche) - Coctel de Camaron y Pulpo (Shrimp and Octopus Cocktail) The tacos were HUGE! We cut them into quarters to family style so we all could try a little and I am impressed with how much protein is in every taco. Tulum Seafood really doesn't skimp on the meat. Out of the tacos the crowd favorite was the Octopus taco because it was cooked to perfection, the octopus is soft and it really isn't chewy. The Camaron Enchilado actually packed heat to it, it wasn't TOO spicy or overwhelming but if you're not able to take heat I wouldn't recommend getting it. The Marlin Taco also had a hefty portion of meat too. Omgosh and all the sauces that came with the tacos were also delicious! The green sauce (assuming it was some kind of lime sauce) and the yellow orange sauce (mango habanero) were the favorites, one friend literally drank the green sauce!! The Ceviche was just okay, but the Shrimp and Octopus Cocktail was just SOOOO much more flavorful that it was the crowd favorite. I was a noob the first time around and didn't know that I was supposed to mix the Ketchup and Tapateo packets into the Cocktail, so definitely remember to do that to elevate the flavors. Without them the tomato base is a bit bland. All in all great experience, and I will come back to try the Aguachiles next time :0) read more

This was my first visit here and I see what the hype is about with all the positive ratings on Yelp and elsewhere about Tulum! The Mexican restaurants in the Mira Mesa area have a tough competitor here. I ordered for the family via drive-thru, surf n' turf fries, carne asada fries, quesabirria taco, carne asada mulita, horchata and a tamarindo drink. Food was great tasting and very filling. We usually have to drive out of Mira Mesa for good tasting versions of these menu items but I think we have a winner. I will be back before the end of 2024 to try out a few more of the other menu items. read more

The Tulum Seafood location in Mira Mesa just recently opened in the old Papa Johns pizza spot next to the Mire Mesa High school. It is a very small location with very little indoor seating, but it does have a drive thru which is very convenient. There is some outdoor seating that often looks packed on the weekends. On my very first visit, I tried the Mar y Tierra Papas Fritas, which essentially is surf and turf fries...carne asada, and shrimp. Everything is made fresh, so if you go through the Drive-thru, expect a little bit of a wait. Unfortunately, after I drove away with my order, we opened it and it was a fish taco instead of the fries. We went back, and the lady already knew why were back. She was very apologetic and told me to keep the fish taco too. The fish taco was ok. The tortilla part of the taco was hard to bite, almost stale. The fish was tasty and the rice and beans where good. But the highlight of our first experience was the fries. The Mar y Tierra Papas Fritas is a little pricey at $18, but the container is packed full. There was a generous portion of shrimp and some kind of sauce that is kind of like a chipotle sauce. It was very good. So good that I found myself back 2 days later order the same thing! Yum!!! Overall, this is a nice edition to Mira Mesa and a great variety when it comes to Mexican food in the area. Highly suggest checking it out. read more
