Wow, wow, wow! A while back we had a great lunch at Tuning Fork but last night's dinner was AMAZING! The vibe and wait staff is super chill. We met our friends at 5pm (Reaturant advertises dinner starting at 6pm but they said hey can usually accommodate a 5:30 start) and had wine and beer for a bit. Two of us had the Bread and Butter Pinot Nior and it was really nice. Our waiter was super helpful and attentive. We ordered appetizers - the home made chips with blue cheese sauce on the side (which you can get complimentary if you check in on Yelp) and the pork tacos. They were so accommodating (we had a non-pork water and vegetarian in our party) that they gave us two pork and two salmon tacos. We LOVED THEM. Then for dinner we asked our waiter what he suggested. He gave us an incredible description of the Fish and Chips that we all jumped on board - and he wasn't kidding - light, flavorful and well presented. We added a few salads (they came lightly dressed) and had a great meal - ate every bit of it! We topped off our dinner with their version of Key Lime Pie - YUM! Highly recommend Tuning Fork. We had an incredible dinner here!! VIBE: Very small quaint restaurant. It has the feeling of a brunch spot, but it's for dinner. Extremely heavy wooden chairs. Don't try and lift it; you'll hurt your back. There is a small bar at the back, and a TV with sports which doesn't seem to fit the ambiance of the place. However, it's still cute. FOOD: The beer selection was quite good. We always tend to get dark beers (stouts and porters) so we got a flight ($10) of all dark beers and one cider. Everything tastes awesome. Know that some of their beers are like 11% so you'll definitely feel it. We started with the truffle fries ($8) that were free with check-in. You have your choice of any free munchies; fries, tacos, cheese balls. The fries were awesome with their aioli which was more watery than most, which isn't a bad thing. The short rib ($28) was tender and tasty. The accompanying brocollini and mash were smooth and well seasoned. The fire burger ($16) had the perfect touch of heat and sweetness from the ghost pepper jam. I was scared it would be too hot but it was just right. Cooked wonderfully on a soft brioche bun. Though, skip on the added salad ($3) as its soggy and the curry dressing wasn't my cup of tea. SERVICE: Our waitress was lovely. She wasn't the cheerful Smily type but great overall. She described the burgers heat before I ordered, checked in on us, and even asked if wanted the door closed due to the breeze. LOCATION: Located in Studio city where they have their Sunday Farmers Market, next to McConnell's ice cream so get your second stomach ready. Also next to Joan's on Third if you want dessert there or a root beer float. Parking is street but we had no trouble. Can't give it 5-stars due to the pricing. Tuning Fork is a gastropub located in the heart of Studio City in a very hip neighborhood. I made reservations here for a group of 10 and they were happy to accommodate us on a busy Saturday night. Since our party were arriving at different times, our waitress was very accommodating in taking orders throughout the night for late arrivals. She consistently checked up on us and was very patient in giving us time to order and suggested great recommendations. The restaurant is known for their comfort food especially the burgers, so my bf and I decided to share the Truffle burger with a side of Truffle fries and the Margherita flatbread. We also ordered the bread pudding to end the night. The burger tasted just mediocre to me and lacked flavor but was very filling. The Margherita flatbread was probably the highlight of the meal. It consists of organic grape tomatoes, bocconcici, argugula, basil, and garlic chips. The bread pudding was good but wasn't anything special. I left wanting more. That's a good thing. Service was lovely from the start. Warmly greeted by Loubna, she was also the server, and she was tip-top nice and efficient. Tuning fork was cute and charming. Rustic, handmade chairs and tables, and a small bar of 10-12 that really the focal point. A small amount of tables, too, seats 40-50. Rather loud, it was only half full and I could barely hear. Cool rock is playing at a medium level overhead, but they feature live music at 9pm on some nights. The wine, the beer, and the menu -- all interesting. Separate pages for each, since there's such a wide selection. Tons of good stuff, but my dining companion and I wasn't very hungry, so I'll have to return to try a burger, a salad, etc (and I will). Onto the order, shall we?: 1. I chose Bench, $12, a cab from the Alexander Valley, 2012. It was outstanding. 2. Mediterranean Flatbread - a bit salty probably from the olives, but totally delicious. A small circle of 4 pieces, maybe a little small for the price. ($11, 4.5 stars) 3. Chips & Salsa - freshly made tortilla chips were great, but salsa, is not really a salsa in terms of regularity. Mixed with olives and spices, it's a spicy paste - with the consistency of hummus. Jury's out on if I liked it or not, but cheap enough. ($4, 3.0 stars) 4. Brussels Sprouts - delicious roasted flavor, cut in halves, served al dente, and under-seasoned. I've had many better elsewhere. ($7, 3.5 stars) The claim, "serve seasonal comfort food in an groovy rock 'n roll atmosphere". It's interesting that this restaurant is called Tuning Fork "Gastropub" on Yelp since the actual name on the restaurant signage and menu is just Tuning Fork and it's not exactly a gastropub. My friend and I were looking for a cozy bar to chill at but were surprised to walk into a full service restaurant with formal seating. Despite the confusion, we actually really enjoyed our meal. I had the sea bass with risotto and asparagus. The sea bass was cooked perfectly and the risotto had great flavor. I have been disappointed by many crappy risotto but this is probably one of the best I've had in a while. My friend ordered the beef tenderloin and she really loved it as well. They don't have a huge beer selection on tap, which is unfortunate. They do have a decent canned beer variety and a nice wine list. They have about 8 seats at the bar area but those seats were all taken while we were there. My friend and I shared the chocolate souffle for dessert. It was good but not served with ice cream like we're used to. Our waitress was really friendly. She was patient and attentive. My only complaint is that the food took very long to come out. We waited about 30 minutes for our dish and almost another 30 for our dessert. read more

Discovered this lovely establishment through my dear friend, Richie the C. He introduced me to Rick on a Monday a little over a month ago. Rick is the awesome host of their open mic sessions every Monday at 9pm. The open mic alone deserves five stars. Rick personally invites some of the most talented songwriters to play every Monday. Of course, it is an open mic, so anyone is welcome to join, but like I tell many people who have asked - the open mic on Mondays at Tuning Fork always sounds like a booked show. In addition to their brilliant open mic sessions on Mondays that already sound like booked shows, they have an actual booked series called, "Whimsical Stew", a Studio City Songwriter Showcase every Sunday. I truly appreciate the culinary arts as much as I appreciate good music; hence, naturally, this place realizes my dream marriage of food and song. Last week, I ordered the tomato soup with grilled cheese... the best ever! I cannot wait to try everything on this menu as I listen to some of the most talented musicians play their original music. read more

Little restaurant tucked away in studio city. Could easily be missed but it's there. AMBIANCE & ATMOSPHERE: It looked like they were going for a laid back, lounging, quiet sitting type of restaurant but it ended up just being dark and slightly awkward. It seems to be a laid back spot BUT because of how dark it is, it felt like eating inside of your closest with only your night light on.. Open mic night didn't really help the vibe because there were times where the performer was either TOO loud where I couldn't hear a thing my friend was saying or TOO toned down that when we finally figured out our volume of conversation, the table by us can suddenly hear that awkward part in my story because.. Unfortunate timing & such. They also just had too many things going on at once: A sports game was on, open mic was going, and people were just trying to dine and talk with their party. A confusing venue, really. Tuning Fork is just too small to cater to different things.. So I HIGHLY suggest you stick to one thing and focus on it. SERVICE: The waitress was really nice but the time they took to get our order was much too long for such a small restaurant. It wasn't even that busy that evening.. But it took a good 15 min before our order was taken then add another 15-20 min before the food even made it to our table. The only thing their timing seemed to be good for was getting our check. FOOD: We ordered the fried mac & cheese balls, friend got a grilled cheese w/ tomato soup, and I got the Margherita flatbread. We wanted to try the fries but the lady said we had a lot of food coming our way.. Their portions are small. My flatbread was bland & not worth the wait OR the price-- My friend only ate half of her grilled cheese and soup. The only thing that we enjoyed was the fried mac & cheese balls. So this was my first time at Tuning Fork. I loved it! Ambience: definitely a rustic feel. Wooden tables and chairs. The large windows brought in a lot of natural light which I loved. Staff: friendly and outgoing. Our waiter definitely had a bubbly personality and was charming. FOOD: I got the TF Club and oh my gawwwwd was that the best club I've ever had. Bread was toasted perfectly and there was a perfect meat, to veggie, to cheese, to aioli ratio. Of course got the side of truffles fries because DUH. I'm very particular about my fries and these were cooked to perfection. They were pretty much shoe string fries and the taste and texture were to die for. You could definitely taste the truffle but was not overpowering. My friend got the All or Nothing Burger. I mean, you can't go wrong with an oozing egg and bacon on your burger. Definitely a monster burger. It's my birthday so they gave us free dessert and it was the bread pudding. Man that pudding was GOOD. Not too sweet and not too soggy. Overall, 4 stars. The only thing preventing me from giving the full 5 is that the food took quite a while to come out and we were the first customers of the day. If I could give a 4.5, I would. Every couple of weeks, we order(ed) lunch from Tuning Fork and it's never blown us away - sometimes it takes longer than we're told, sometimes the food is cold, etc. The second to last time we ordered, our salads were miniscule. $15 for the ESW and there was maybe a handful of salad in our containers. But this last experience was probably our last time. I placed the order and picked up for 29 people. I was told it'd be ready around 11:45am, maybe noon. OK. I showed up at 11:45am and some of the orders were ready. I sat at the bar of the empty restaurant. A few more orders trickled out over the next fifteen minutes, but at 12:05 I was missing 19 orders still. 9 more came by 12:10. I waited 20 more minutes for the remaining 10 orders and walked out of the restaurant at 12:30 exactly - 30 minutes after the latest time estimate I was given. The entire time waiting I was given false "just a few more minutes" or "they're just boxing up the last of it" a handful of times instead of sincere apologies and accurate time estimates. By the time I got back to the offices (thankfully at 12:35 as we are very close to the restaurant) many of the hot meals/sides were cold or lukewarm at best as some had been waiting for 30-45 minutes while I was there. Again, the portions for the salads were laughable for the cost. Best of all, the order of grilled salmon was not only cold, but mostly uncooked. We had to put it in our oven and cook it ourselves (this is a $16 dish, by the way). I've added a picture as it was being placed in the oven for reference. Overall, just very disappointed with the service and quality of a place we frequently order from as a group. But, as stated at the beginning, we probably won't be trying it again. read more

I'm over the MOON about Tuning Fork. We walked by a few weeks ago while it was still boarded up, and immediately knew we had to try it. I got a Facebook update from them yesterday, saying it was Wine Wednesday (1/2 bottles of wine), so I knew it was the perfect time to try it out. We were greeted immediately as we walked in, and everyone was SUPER friendly. We sat in a cute little 2-top next to the bar, and the bartender Jo (girl) was our waitress as well. She was fantastic - friendly, helpful and just nice. We ordered two beers to start along with the Bacon Brussels sprouts as an appetizer. They were cooked to perfection and came drizzled with a yummy balsamic glaze. We then ordered a bottle of wine (2005 Point Conception Syrah by Peter Cargasacchi - a library wine unavailable at the winery at this point). Fantastic. I would say my ONLY complaint about this restaurant the whole evening was they served this wine too warm. Definitely room temp, if not a little above. Not sure how they are storing their wines. My fiancé ordered the Queen Plain Jane burger (w/cheese + bacon) and I ordered the Hanger Steak. Both medium rare - these were also cooked to perfection. I had a bite of his burger, and it was very good (as well as the tots!) But the BEST was by far the steak. Served with organic rainbow chard, horseradish mash (with deep fried onion rings on the top - not mentioned on the menu) and covered with a caper-garlic balsamic bordelaise - YUM. I licked my plate. My one suggestion - more horseradish in the mash (but then again, I like it hot!) Both manager Martin and owner Joseph checked in on us and were very friendly and talkative. They seem so excited to be up and running. One note - they took over Sompun Thai's liquor license, so for now they are only open until 10. However, they are working on getting a new license from the city to allow for a 2am closing. We live 2 blocks away, and will be there often! The friendly staff makes for an incredible evening - and the food is delicious - can't wait to go back to try other menu items! read more

Tuning Fork is the newest Gastropub in Studio City. There's a dense ganglion of tasty places to eat near the intersection of Ventura Blvd and Ventura Pl where it is located. You have 2008 entry Laurel Tavern. Black Market Liquor joined the party in 2011. Now in 2013, Tuning Fork Gastropub steps up to provide microbrew beer, a delicious burger, and a few other tasty choices on the menu. Of the three choices on the corner, Tuning Fork has the brightest decor. It has light brown walls, giant windows facing the street, and even sky lights. The design does a good job of opening up a rather narrow space. The beer menu is excellent, though mostly bottles, there are a set of 6 rotating draught beers. I ordered a basic burger and was like wowzer! that's yummy. Highly recommend that burger. I know there are a lot of good burgers on Ventura Blvd... the gourmet burger joints outnumber the gastropubs! Tuning Fork can hold its own. Do consider it as a Studio City destination. My dinner was even more exciting as a water main burst at the intersection flooding one side of the street and creating a torrenting fountain shooting 20 feet into the sky. Stopped in one night after work for Taco Mondays. Got the short rib tacos, and the ahi tuna tacos. Even though I asked for the sauces on the side, the taco were a bit too spicey for me. I am more of a "mild spicey" type of person. They were still yummy, but I am glad I got the salsa and sauces on the side. The servings sizes of the tacos were large - 3 tacos each. So I had plenty to take "to go". Nice beer selection too. I was glad I went right from work, because as I was getting ready to leave the place was getting packed. My boyfriend and I happened to come across this place for lunch after a visit to a store on the same block. Upon entering the restaurant, the comfortable, laidback vibe and clean interior seemed like a good place for a casual, but also really nice meal. Food 3.5 stars. Service 5 stars. I ordered the grilled salmon po' boy with truffle fries. The salmon was very moist and well-seasoned. That combined with the remoulade and sweet onion marmalade made the sandwich really tasty. The shoestring truffle fries were a little overcooked, making them taste a bit like potato chips, but they were still good overall. My boyfriend had the e.s.w. salad, which he really enjoyed. It doesn't come with dressing, but the combination of asparagus sautéed with olive oil, pepper, and salt with sliced avocados and crunchy vegetables provided good flavor and crunch. This new joint was hovering near 5 stars after my first visit, but after my second visit earlier this week, I have to go with a 3 until some "growing pains" are addressed. All in all: a cozy, small joint with a good menu, excellent beer options, with a friendly staff. They also have a happy hour! As previously noted, been here twice: once for dinner, once for lunch. Dinner experience was on a Thursday night just as happy hour was wrapping up. Not a lot of traffic, so getting a table and finding parking was super easy. I had a mushroom truffle burger, $14 with a side of fries, $2. Meat is grass fed, hand ground short rib, and is absolutely delicious. I had asked for medium, but it came out medium rare -- no biggie. Brioche bun was fantastic, though I must say I couldn't taste a whole lot of truffle? Fries are shoestring, so not my favorite, but crispy and good enough. Service was attentive and friendly, and food came out relatively quickly. Lunch was a total 180: one man on staff with a growing lunch crowd. We waited 40 minutes for our food - a big time no-no on the lunch scene. This time, I ordered the mac n' cheese, $11. I wish I had added bacon. Not one of my favorite macs: too stringy, not gooey enough. Bacon would have given it some much needed texture. Also, by the time I got my food, it was warm, not piping hot. I felt bad for our waiter - truly a nice guy wanting to do a great job, but blame it on the slow kitchen and the fact that he was a one man show for the lunch fail. If you work for the studios, bring your ID and you'll get an awesome 25% discount. I hope they keep that perk going - it's a great incentive. The vibe is really great. They have a live guy singing, who is actually really great! He sang really good songs too. The staff here is so friendly! The food here is pretty good: We ordered a pizza- I wasn't to much of a fan of it. The crust was soft. It had tomatoes and spinach on top of it. We also ordered a burger- wow it was great! Very juicy and made to perfection. It came with fries. The French fries are like string fries! They were so delicious as well. Lastly. We had to try a dessert. What a sexy place. Guys. Apparently, I really like gastropubs. Go early or make a reservation, because like other people have said, Tuning Fork is very tiny. Like, one person at a time in the bathroom, small. It's located on the smaller Ventura Place next to a few other small businesses. *Sidebar* it's a cute street with metered parking. I called and asked if I needed a reservation, and the person on the phone was really nice! Some of the tables have odd spacing, but they are 2-seaters. The rest are 4- to 6-tops. Mirrored walls and a windowed front make this space look larger than it is. THe bar sits prominently behind the tables and offers delicious wines and a good selection of beers. I had a delicious Cab and my friend had a Pinot. The Pinot was nutty and subtle, but good. My Cabernet was bold, but smooth. I really appreciated the heavy pour on my Cabernet! The fries, tho. TRUFFLE OIL. Just do it. I had the Mediterranean Flatbread Pizza, and I love it! My favorite olive is the Kalamata, and it paired well with the artichoke and cheese. It reheats well, too! Bacon in anything is a definite win in my book and we all know Cheese is my mistress. The fact that Tuning Fork has awesome vegan, vegetarian AND BACON MAC AND CHEESE BALLS is the most legit thing I've seen this Christmas season. The Tuning Fork is a small restaurant situated on a small side street off the hustle and bustle of Ventura blvd. We came on a Friday at 6pm and there were only 2-3 other tables occupied. There are mirrors all along the walls to give the space a larger feel. The service was very friendly and attentive. The food took a while to come out, so I can only imagine how much slower it would be with more people in the restaurant. My plate was delicious. I ordered the portobello mushroom with kale and quinoa. I was slightly disappointed only because there was very little mushroom when that was the first ingredient on the list. It was very tasty though! And the portion was generous. I also got to take a bite of the mushroom burger and it was great. The truffle fries are thin, crispy, and served with a garlic sauce. Nice place, friendly staff, cool decor but really difficult parking. Came here during lunch time at 12:30 and it was completely empty -- felt a little awkward. Luckily by the time I left an hour later there were maybe 3 other tables. My rule of thumb is to never eat at a place that's empty. However, the food I had was very delicious. The grilled cheese and a cup of tomato soup was absolutely perfect. The grilled cheese was pretty greasy but it was probably the best tomato soup that I've had. My girlfriend and I hadn't seen each other in a long time, and I wanted to take her someplace nice for lunch. A gastropub seemed like a good choice, but boy, was I wrong. THE FOOD I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup believing it best to keep things simple. Although there wasn't much of a problem with my dish, I just thought that a gastropub in a trendy area could have done a better job making this dish unique. My friend got the quinoa and arugula bowl with butternut squash. We both expected a salad-esque presentation, but it truly looked like a sad bowl of leaves. What gives? And my goodness; how bland the whole thing tasted! THE SERVICE Good enough; no problem. The only problem we had was that they handed us the wrong change, though that was solved quickly. THE ATMOSPHERE The place maximizes the small space by adding mirrors along the side walls to reflect the natural light that filters in. It appears to want to be both rustic and rock and roll, with the band memorabilia at the bar mingling with the wooden furniture. I'm not quite sure I buy it, but I do appreciate how bright the room looked. I wasn't too jazzed to go here anyway but the burger definitely made my decision easy in the future. The reason I'm giving this review 3 stars is because the food took foreverrrr to come out and there were people that came after us and got their food before us. They brought all the food out at once instead of bringing out what was ready first. Also, I wasn't too impressed with their flat breads. The bread was a lot thicker than expected and it was a lot smaller too. My favs: truffle fries and watermelon salad! I definitely want to come back and try one of their famous burgers. read more

What a lovely little hip trendy eatery! The menu items are such a trendy selection of delectable fusion foods! Feels ultra grub hub type you would see in a busy metropolitan town. The truffle fries are just shoestring potatoes and while good, not worth the $3 up charge. The place is small. There were singers there, live music! It was a very nice lunch. I had the club and my friend had the grilled cheese... both were great. The grilled cheese looked like that one that Jon Favreau made in the movie, Chef. I mean, food has gotten SO good, in general, the bar raised so high, that any restaurant experience is made or destroyed by factors other than the actual food... speed of service attitude of server, ambiance, ease of parking, etc. I found a spot on the street, we were seated immediately, the food came out quickly and the server had an amazing, almost over-the-top attitude... all can be attributed to eating lunch at 11:20. Don't expect all of the above at 12:30, I'm guessing. I love this place. I've eaten here about 4 times now and it's been such an enjoyable experience each time. The SmokeStack Lightning pulled pork sandwich is out of control, delicious. One of the best I've had in Los Angeles. Fantastic draft beer selection, (love the new draft options instead of the bottles) (Oberon from Bell's = amazing) SUPER friendly staff (Cari, Terrance, Grace, Megan, Sally and John the manager.) We ordered dinner last night for 2. Put the order in at 4:50 PM, and we were told the food would arrive by GrubHub by 5:45. It FINALLY came at 6:40, almost an hour late. The soup was lukewarm, the salmon was ice cold as were the vegetables. The Short Ribs were ice cold as well. This has happened to us 8 out of the last 10 times we've ordered from Tuning Fork, and the service just keeps getting worse. BTW - the total cost was $168. and change. I am NEVER ordering food from these people again. The food is great, when it is hot. But this service is just bullshit and I am sick of the silly excuses for why its always late and cold. This place is good. It's small, and cozy with nice food, wine, and beer (no liquor). My boyfriend and I come here often actually, so I'm not sure why I haven't written a review before now, but whatever. The last time we came, I had the salmon and he had the "All or nothing" burger. Mine was good, and he loved his. They also had a couple people playing guitar and singing which for me was no bueno. The place is to small for that, and ain't body got time for saying "WHAT?!" all night to the person sitting right across from you. It was just to damn loud. At one point I seriously couldn't take it anymore, and we had to go but my bf had ordered dessert, so we requested it to go which took forever. It was the chocolate cake, which I think they make to order. ..hence the fact that I was deaf, with a full beard by the time it came out. Lol. Over all, I'd say this place is a win. Reservations: YES (even day of) for a group of 6 Ambience: nice, dark, really warm, and romantic-- haha, being here made our group feel old as we all had to use our phone flashlights to read our menu and to see our food! We appreciated that the heater was blasting on a cold evening but we all were sweating bullets by the end of the night. Our server did turn down the heater but still super warm there! Service: awesome! Our server was very helpful and attentive even on a New Year Day where it seemed like he was the only one on the floor. Luckily the restaurant wasn't too busy when we were there. Food: Short rib is a must try!!! So tender it melts in your mouth! New York strip (cooked Medium rare) was also delicious! We were able to substitute asparagus for broccolini for an addition $2.50. Our friends ordered a chicken salad (they were impressed with the textures of quinoa and different legumes), truffle burger (burger was good but the bread was "soggy"), and a veggie burger which I think was "good." We found this place as we were walking around Studio City one day and decided to give it a try more recently. We were fortunately able to walk in and get a table, but we took the last available one. The restaurant itself is beautiful and the service is attentive and pleasant. We split a bottle of the 2011 Paso Robles Pinot Noir for the 3 of us, which came out to $25 for the bottle. We started with truffle fries ($8) which were just OK. I couldn't really taste the truffle in them, but they were good. For my main dish, I ordered the mediterranean chopped salad ($12), which had baby artichokes, goat cheese, chick peas, cucumber, kalamata olives, grape tomatoes, croutons, and basil vin. Love! I was here last week and it was great! The menu has great dishes with a twist! I had the "light my fire" burger and it was delicious!! It was also the favorite of our waitress, so I knew it was going to be good. When I hear the staff talk about the food, I usually take their recommendations. If they work there, they should know the menu and know what is good. She recommendation the truffle fries as well. YES AND YES! Those were so tasty too! I had a glass of wine and my friend had a beer. We ended up sitting in our booth until it closed. We were the last people in the restaurant and they let us just sit there and talk.
