Mike is the best! I have a 5x7 white flokati rug (handmade wool, very long shag) that my parents purchased in the late '90s. It lived in a box for about ten years, and had shoes all over and food spilled on it for another year before I finally caved and took it in for cleaning. It was no longer white, and had turned gray with some darker patches from spills. Now, it's white and fluffy again! I wish I'd taken a "before" picture. Mike took care of it very quickly and at a great price. I took it in at the end of the day Wednesday and it was ready for pickup Friday afternoon. The cost was just $100 (25% of what another business in the area quoted), and he even threw in some scraps of non-slip mat for free to go underneath the rug. I had two rugs, a thick 8 x 8 wool rug that's probably 15 years old but in good shape, and a low pile 4 x 6 synthetic IKEA rug in the bedroom with no stains but a couple of years of dirt. I was given an estimate of 4 to 7 days, but it took ten days to get both rugs back. Michael brought in the large rug and unrolled it, and it did look pretty good. You could tell it had been cleaned because the pile was fluffier than before and the white stripe was brighter. He wasn't able to get out the wine stain in one corner, but that wasn't surprising. Michael said there were "lots of issues" with that rug and when I pressed him for details he said "full of moths." But when I asked how to prevent them he said "You can't. They'll come back." He also said it was "off-gassing," which sounded horrible, but when I asked him why, he just said "they all do that." He then said that the wool rug was old and that I needed a new one. He didn't say what he thought I should get, but when I asked for recommendations about where to get a new one, he recommended a consignment shop in Marin. I asked if they would have rugs that didn't off-gas or attract moths, and he said "oh no, you can't avoid that." So why did he say my rug had issues? He said that the color was wrong for me; he didn't think brown was my color. He also wouldn't answer any of my questions about the cleaning process. He just said "It's scientific." Unfortunately, I didn't unroll the smaller rug until after he left, because when I did, it was obvious that it not been cleaned--at all. Period. The rug has brightly-colored stripes that were a little grayish in certain areas from foot traffic. Just dirt, no stains. Those colors should have come back brighter, like the white stripe on the wool rug, and the pile should have been fluffier. But the colors were as dull as they were when he picked up the rug, and the pile was flat, compressed, as if it had been sitting completely rolled up in his warehouse for ten days. I thought about making him pick up and clean that rug, but it really wasn't worth the hassle. I was pretty sure he'd argue and claim that the small rug had "issues" that can't be solved. I just didn't want to bother. I was out 50 bucks. I'll clean that rug myself in less than ten days. read more

Michael did an amazing job cleaning a white shag 100% Australian wool rug that my cat had taken to peeing on. I tried many DIY rug cleaners, pet odor removers, enzymatic cleaners, and even pet repellents to stop my cat's behavior - total fail! Save your money on those. So I finally decided to get a professional clean. Truthfully, I didn't expect it to work, because the rug is super shaggy and once a cat has its scent somewhere...they are instinctively drawn to it. I was resigned to having to get rid of it. I got a bunch of quotes and Michael's was by far the least expensive, especially with his current Covid discount. The other GREAT thing is he lives right next to his shop, so he is super flexible about drop off and pick up times. I had all sorts of scheduling problems since I needed to find someone to help me lug this 9 x 11' rug down the stairs. Every time I texted Michael with drop off time changes, he responded "Yes, any time, no problem". (I finally got it to him at 8 pm!). All the other places had limited drop off times due to Covid, so this really helped me, since I am still working everyday and not at home. (BONUS: it seems Michael is now offering free pick up/delivery...it does not get better than that, folks!). I didn't even realize how smelly this rug was until I had it all rolled up. I think El Gato was peeing way more often than I realized, and the shag was soaking it up, so it wasn't that visible. But it smelled pretty gross. Michael had told me that for pet urine, he has to use a de-odorizer. Here is the only disclaimer I have: for any of you who are very "smell sensitive/averse" - you should know that in order to neutralize/remove pet urine odor, you have to use something besides water! So yes, there will be a scent. After my carpet was cleaned, Michael told me to smell it, and it definitely had a sort of sweet/flowery smell. Not a "neutral" scent. I liked it, but I know people who are extremely fussy about "scents," so I am mentioning this specifically. For pet urine issues, your rug will need to be cleaned with something, and super sensitive types might have a problem with the resulting scent (I didn't). But now the amazing part: First: when I rolled out my shaggy wool carpet at home, I could NOT believe how freaking fluffy it was! I don't remember it ever being that soft and luxurious feeling when it was new (it is 10 yrs old). Every time I walk on it, I am reminded how great a job Michael did. My toes are loving it. And MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ALL: my cat (miraculously!) has NOT peed on this carpet again! I saw her sniffing at it a few times - but the instinctive reflex to pee on her "spot" is gone. I confess I have actually crawled around on my rug smelling for any "accidents" that might not be visible. None found! It has now been several months since Michael cleaned it, and my cat is NOT peeing on it, any more. Hallelujah. Lastly: the rug scent was slightly noticeable to me for a couple days, but then just faded away. Frankly, even if I did notice it, I wouldn't care, because whatever Michael did, it totally worked. So my cat and I are extremely happy. I live in SF and there are many closer options for rug cleaners. But I will use Michael for any rug cleaning jobs I have in the future. I first spoke to the owner on the phone and appreciated that he brought personality to the conversation instead of making it all about the numbers. I am always happy to bring my business to people who show up with personality. He quoted me at 250. then I show up at the shop, he is not there and his employees first tell me it's going to cost over $400 to do the full cleaning with the pet deodorizing, that the cheapest they can do is 375. they tell me that the owner always says he's going to charge less but then ends up charging more once you bring the rug in. So there I am, not knowing who to trust. I call the owner back, he proceeds to start yelling at me over the phone that what he said before was the real price, as I'm trying to express my confusion and get clear on things.....trying to explain to him that his employees told me that he would end up charging me more to properly clean the rug, and he is just yelling at me "you think i would fuck you over??? i'm not persian, i'm a new york jew " is that supposed to mean something to me? ... he is telling me to put his guys on the phone, that they didn't know that he had already spoken to me and he was giving me a good price because "this is how he gets yelp reviews " , they have already gone to the back so they aren't right there with me and he is not even giving me space on the phone to explain that they already walked into the back... Had a giant expensive rug that needed cleaning after my cat had a few accidents on it-for those of you that are familiar with this the smell is deadly and the texture of the rug changes dramatically (I though the rug could never be rid of the smells). We had used a do-it-yourself rug shampoo machine, which failed to extract all the water from the rug. As a result, the padding was soaked and the pad, the rug, and our wood floor took on a "sour sponge odor!" I brought my rug here because my usual place down the road that has been cleaning my rug for years is looking for a new location. I have passed this place so many times, so I figured I would give it a try. We don't wear shoes in our house, and this rug doesn't see a lot of action, but I do like to have it professionally cleaned once a year. My old place would measure my rug and charge me per square ft. It usually cost about $80. When I brought my rug to Turko there was a 50% off sign (might have been 35%) in the window. I asked how much it would be to clean the rug and the guy says $100. No measuring. Asks if there is vomit or urine on the rug jokingly... says that he charges extra for that. I say no. Just bringing in my rug for its yearly cleaning. He talked my ear off about this and that. I ask about the discount posted in the window, he said he would normally charge $200 to clean the rug. Seemed kind of shady, and dishonest to me. Anyway, I left my rug with him and he said he would call in a week when it was ready. Two weeks later I called. He asked for my name, and I said my first name. He instantly said the rug would be ready the next day. I felt like I could have given any name and he would have had the same response. It took me a couple of days to get there, and when I arrived, he asked to see my receipt. I showed him my receipt and he went in the back and got my rug. I paid him and brought the rug home. My last place would unroll the rug, and we would check it out before it left the store. I wish I would have done that here. When I got the rug home, it seemed a little damp still and had an odor of Bassett Hound. It had obviously been cleaned, but not like I was used to. It felt a little crunchy in one spot when I passed my hand over it. Overall my experience was pretty disappointing. I never got a call to say my rug was ready, feel like there was a bit of a bait and switch as far as the advertised discount, and got my rug back in what sort of seems like worse condition than when I brought it in. Well, I read the couple of reviews here, and I figured a little bad service might be OK for a good price. Wrong. Made an appointment for my rugs to be picked, and yes, I was given one of those ridiculous two hour windows. One hour after the window had closed, I get a call from them that they are "nearby" and tried to leave a message earlier. Yes, they did leave a message -- three minutes earlier, when they were only 57 minutes late. When told I was not going to give someone my money when they could not be timely, and that I could not trust them to return my rugs in a timely fashion, they became outraged. First I had to be told how long they were in business, then I was told they were just trying to do me a favor by picking up my rugs over one hour late. When someone who scrubs rugs for a living thinks he is doing his customers a favor by performing in a tardy fashion, and evidently has done it that way for years, the economy can't be too bad. I will give my money to someone who doesn't think they are doing me a favor by taking it. read more

Mike gave me a quote over the phone for two of my (2) white shag rugs 8x10 and within a week (as he promised) my rugs were done and look better than when they were new. The wash made them fluffier and removed some nasty dirt on the under side as well as two pet stains. He sticks to his word, does a great job, pulls it out of the car and puts it back when completed. And the price was so worth the trip from the South Bay to Berkeley where Flash the basset hound was waiting for me. Accept that Mike is a good heart and honest businessman. I'll be back. read more

In the last couple of weeks I researched fine rug cleaning companies in the Bay Area and I came up with quite a few. I chose Turko Persion Rug Cleaning frankly because they were less than half the price of many of the other companies in the area. I check Yelp all the time and like reading the reviews. I spoke to Mike the owner about the negative review on Yelp and he was very apologetic but simply admitted his company made a mistake and took an extra week or two to get one of those 10 rugs out. I liked his honesty in admitting his mistake. So I had two Aubusson rugs that haven't been cleaned for 15 years. One was 10 X 14 and the other was 9 X 12. That is about 250 Square Feet. Mike ended up doing both of them for $400 and did a FANTASTIC job. They look as good as new and are so much brighter than they were. Mike picked them up perfectly on time at 10AM and dropped them off 3 days later at exactly 6PM like he said he would. He didn't give some ridiculous 3 hour window and provided door to door service for free. He said he would be there at a certain time and was there. Everyone quoted at least 2 weeks to return. Mike did 3 days. Artisan Rug Care quoted me $4.00 per square foot which would be $1,000. Tulanian quoted me $600 plus $20 each way to deliver with 3 - 5 week turnaround time. Talisman quoted me an outrageous $5.75 per square foot or $1400 + a $150 service delivery charge. 10 years or so ago one of the rugs was in bad shape with burnt ember holes, etc. and I sent the rug to Talisman and they cleaned and did major repairs to the rug for around $500 - they did a great job. Their prices have almost doubled since then it seems and have become exorbitantly outrageous in my opinion. Mike has been in this business for 30 years and really knows the details about fine rug cleaning. All these other companies claim to have some "much better" process but they all essentially use the same technology and cleaning products it seems despite what they try to tell you. I bought a very dusty used wool rug with raggedy fringes, and got it cleaned and the fringe removed and edges serged here. It was cleaned well and the edging was done well, and the price for all this was less than I was quoted for just cleaning elsewhere. The process: I was told it would take a week to clean, but at the end of the week I was told the short edges were still curled under (I'd bought it rolled up). I wished they'd told me ahead of time but seeing it in person helped me make the decision to remove the fringe. They matched the color almost exactly with the new thread. Bring your cell phone or call ahead because the door is sometimes locked and there's no doorbell. read more
