Most of the products were displayed in big bulk cases, clearly labeled for easy browsing. The man working the grocery was friendly, helpful, and efficient. He got Mike what he needed and bagged it up for him right away. I love Mexican food and fantasize about making moles at home now and then, but like, my lunch today was a soup that came out of a pantry bag and a frozen Tupperware of brown rice that my mom gave me in early 2018. Of course, this is the same promise I make every time I go shopping, and it is also a promise I almost never keep. This time was no different. I walked in thinking I would pick up just a few things, but somehow I walked out holding La Conviette butter, scallops, and Korean spicy dipping sauce. Looking back, I do not think these three products met by accident. They were destined to be together. The butter had been waiting for the scallops, the scallops had been waiting for the dipping sauce, and apparently I had been chosen as the person responsible for bringing all three of them home. That may sound a little dramatic, but good food has a way of turning ordinary people into poets, philosophers, and occasionally very enthusiastic food critics. The first thing that caught my attention was the La Conviette butter. I already love butter, but this one looked different from regular butter from the moment I saw it. Even the packaging seemed to say, "I am not just any butter." Each little portion looked elegant, adorable, and slightly luxurious. Before I even tasted it, I already felt like I had purchased something special. As soon as I got home, the butter was the first thing I opened. I looked at that tiny piece of butter and felt strangely excited. I wondered whether it was reasonable to expect so much from something so small. Then I tasted it. The answer was yes. It melted smoothly in my mouth, releasing a deep, rich, and beautifully creamy flavor. It was not overly salty, but the buttery taste was clear and luxurious. Most butter quietly supports the other ingredients like a good side character. La Conviette butter does not do that. It enters the scene as a supporting actor and somehow steals the entire show. Spread it on bread, and suddenly ordinary bread feels special. Place it on something warm, and it slowly melts while releasing the most wonderful aroma. For a moment, my kitchen felt less like my kitchen and more like a charming little restaurant somewhere in France. Of course, I was still standing at home in front of my stove, but when the food is good, a little imagination should be allowed. Then it was time for the scallops. They looked fresh, plump, and beautiful. Seafood is one of those ingredients that cannot hide its quality. No matter how much seasoning or sauce you use, if it is not fresh, you can tell immediately. These scallops looked fresh before cooking and tasted just as fresh once they were cooked. I heated the pan and placed the scallops inside. Sizzle. The moment they touched the pan, I knew something good was about to happen. Then I added a piece of La Conviette butter. It slowly began to melt, sliding between the scallops and coating everything in a glossy layer of buttery goodness. The smell that filled my kitchen was honestly dangerous. It was the kind of aroma that could make a person who was not hungry suddenly reconsider all of their dinner plans. For anyone on a diet, this scene would have been emotionally challenging. For anyone trying to avoid late-night snacks, it would have felt like a direct attack. As the butter melted around the scallops and the edges began turning golden brown, I became impatient. I wanted to eat them immediately, but I knew I had to wait for the perfect sear. Who knew cooking scallops could become a lesson in patience and self-control? Finally, I took one perfectly cooked scallop and placed it in my mouth. First came the rich, nutty flavor of the butter. Then came the natural sweetness of the scallop and the delicate taste of the sea. The texture was tender, slightly springy, and not tough at all. After one bite, I actually stopped and said, "Wait a minute. Did I really make this?" I had cooked it myself, but it tasted like something I could have ordered at a restaurant. There was no complicated sauce and no difficult recipe. Just fresh scallops and really good butter. The ingredients did all the work. Good ingredients have an amazing ability to make the cook look more talented than they really are. They can raise your cooking skills by one level, maybe even two. They make an ordinary meal look impressive and transform a simple dinner into something that feels special. The butter scallops were already delicious, but then I remembered the Korean spicy dipping sauce I had purchased. Some people may think it is unusual to dip buttery scallops into Korean chojang. After all, French-style butter and Korean spicy sauce do not usually appear in the same sentence. But when food tastes good, nationality and culinary categories no longer matter. They also had some extras that saved us a grocery run like rice paper, radish wrap, brisket sauce, garlic/jalapeños with ssamjang, and green onion salad. They deliver on Tuesdays/Thursdays in OC so keep that in mind (and deliver to other parts too, just check their website). You can get free delivery if you spend $200 or more. None of that super hard and dry "jerky" they package up over at Jacks Links. This jerky is chewy, yet tender, and not overly packed with salt. Great flavoring and not processed!! I love how the pieces aren't enormous so I can just pop them in my mouth and go. Seriously they need to start producing these in bigger bags, but may be a bad idea for me... Best of all, it has various level of spiciness. So far, I have tried jalapeño, habanero and ghost. My favorite is jalapeño. It's has the perfect balance of flavor and spiciness. I eat pretty spicy and can't go a meal without some kind of chili or hot sauce so when I say it's spicy, it's SPICY. Eat it with caution. If you love beef jerky, this is a must try.
