As good as it gets! This is a well thought out dining establishment. It is evident that the owners take pride in their restaurant and are conscientious about the experiences that diners have. I have dined here over a dozen times and am never disappointed. The charcuterie board, salads (with homemade dressings - maple balsamic vinaigrette), short ribs, and specials are what I gravitate towards. Make sure to come on a night when head Chef Danny Wiken is in the kitchen and be sure to save room for desert. I highly recommend having the build your own smore experience! My husband and I are always looking for good restaurants and when the opportunity for a spontaneous night out without the kids came up, I began looking for options. Yelp directed me toward Twisted Willow and he made a reservation. The person on the phone let my husband know there was a Christmas event in town and instructed us to park west of the location. When we drove into Port there was a detour and we had to park four blocks away and cross a parade route to get to the front door. Our reservation was for the Treehouse Lounge and being first-timers, there was some confusion as to where to go and what to expect. I would suggest the reservation staff do a better job explaining the differences in seating because we were looking for a nice, quiet spot, not a more casual lounge space with loud patrons. The gentleman upstairs very kindly noticed we were out of our element and offered to comp our first round of drinks while we waited for a table in the living room. It wasn't necessary, but greatly appreciated and set a good tone for the rest of the evening. We ordered the chef's choice bruschetta - a ricotta/grape/honey concoction that tasted a lot better than its air freshener-like scent. I wouldn't order it again. I had the French onion soup and my husband had the butternut squash and venison chili. Both were excellent. For entrees, I had the mushroom spinach stroganoff, which was really more alfredo-like. It tasted good but it wasn't what I expected and wouldn't be a go-to repeat for next time. My husband loved the Asian BBQ salmon. He's usually not much for salmon due to an often fishy taste, but he said the hoisin sauce was a fantastic touch. For dessert, he had the flourless fudge cake and loved it. I had the cheesecake - without the compote - and would eat a slice of it every day if I could. What really made this a 5-star experience was Wendy. She was phenomenal - attentive when needed, scarce when we were amusing ourselves with the Trivial Pursuit game on the table. She was knowledgable, friendly and funny, and is an asset to Twisted Willow. read more

I visited Twisted Willow with my boyfriend's family while we were spending the holidays with them in Wisconsin. They had wonderful experiences there and as a bonus, it has gluten free options on the menu - a must for people like me with Celiac disease. Although everyone at the table really enjoyed their meal, I must warn anyone with allergies about the lack of knowledge at this restaurant. I ordered a gluten free meal (it had a wheat free icon next to the dish on the menu) and specifically noted to the waitress that I had Celiac disease and needed it to be absolutely free of any gluten or contact with gluten. I asked if any modifications were needed to the dish and she rather snidely commented that the dish was gluten free and nothing needed to be done. When I received my dish it was topped with a fried onion topping that looked suspiciously breaded. I asked the waitress and she whisked it away saying they would "take the garnish off" as it was evidently coated in flour. We all immediately informed her that I needed an entirely new dish as the garnished one was completely compromised. She came back with a new dish some time later and I asked again about the ingredients, she left me a list (which included broth) but didn't give me a chance to ask if the broth was actually gluten free - often it isn't. Anyhow, I ended up not eating my meal because I didn't trust the education of the staff. When a menu lists something as gluten free, it mostly certainly should NOT come with a flour-coated garnish. This place needs some SERIOUS education about gluten allergies and the risks associated with this type of carelessness. Aside from that the rest of the party was very happy with their meals - and had the waitress taken the time to actually talk with me about the food and it's preparation, a lot of this could have been avoided. I think Twisted Willow has a lot of potential, but might consider enlisting the training of an expert if they're going to tout gluten free food. Restaurants that offer gluten free food without understanding the care that needs to be taken with food allergies are taking serious risks with patrons' health. read more

We ate at the Twisted Willow for the first time last Saturday. As Port Washington residents, and ones who appreciate the idea of locally produced and procured food, we were excited to dine here. While it has potential to be great, it needs some work. What we liked: Attentive waitstaff. We waited at the bar for our table and the bartender was conversational and attentive without being intrusive. Our waitress was the same. Accommodating: My wife has a gluten intolerance and made this known to our waitress when ordering. Thoughtfully, and without being asked, they held the croutons on her salad and the waitress brought us gluten-free bread. Points for that. The menu also labels items that are GF (vegan also, but that's not us). Food: We started with the sweet potato fries with house-made ketchup. Excellent. I could have eaten the ketchup on its own. My wife had the sirloin filet, which was decent. What we didn't like: Wine: We ordered a bottle of pinot noir, which was recommended on the menu for the entree I ordered. It was WAY too warm. Pinot noir (and most red wines) are best served at cellar temperature - around 58 degrees. This bottle felt warm to the touch, as if it just came out of the kitchen. Almost undrinkable. (I still managed, however.) Also, the waitress needs some training on how to serve/pour a bottle. Rather than presenting the bottle, then the cork, and then pouring a small amount to taste for approval, she came to the table with the bottle already uncorked and proceeded to fill both our glasses. (I would have probably asked for a cooler bottle before she opened it up.) Food: I ordered the "Pile of Baby Backs" on the waitress's recommendation. Overcooked. "Falling off the bone" is an understatement. Properly cooked ribs should be tender but still have a meaty texture. These we mushy. On the plus side, the sauce was tasty. But I won't be ordering these again. All in all, we enjoyed the experience and will likely return, but mostly because it is so close to where we live. read more

Stopped here because someone told me this place was a farm-to-table concept. I only had a small salad and the French onion soup. Not bad overall. The soup was a little on the watered down side, but basically your typical French onion. Nothing really to write home about. I was going to order one of the delicious sounding burgers until I noticed the kitchen sending frozen French fries. Imagine pairing a farm raised beef burger along with frozen fries. Hence my two stars. My suggestion...pay attention to the little things. It will bring more patrons in if you serve fresh foods and not frozen fries that can be bought at Walmart. read more

Delicious. We were camping at Harrington Beach State Park and decided to come down to Port Washington for the afternoon. Stopped into Twisted Willow for lunch and were very pleasantly surprised. My daughter got chicken strips which were actual strips of chicken that had been battered and fried--not just prepackaged junk in a box. I had the chicken curry sandwich with sweet potato fries and it was very yummy. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. There was an elaborate Bloody Mary bar that was very popular. This place is a gem that has to be discovered. We decided to visit on our trip to Cedarburg, seeing a menu is what caught our interest. A farm-to-table, local products restaurant sounded interesting. We heard a rave review from another couple, so we made reservations. Parking was hard to find, but that was the only problem. The food was wonderful & their wine, beer & drink menus made sure you could find something to satisfy you thirst. We both went with that night's specials. I opted to upgrade my salad to the 4 cheese Caesar salad. It was light and so delicious. For an appetizer, we went with the crab and artichoke fondue, which was creamy with pieces of crab throughout. My swordfish was flown in fresh that morning and the chef prepared it perfectly. My husband's short ribs were fork tender and so delicious. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was warm and relaxed. This is a good place for everything from a special occasion to a family dinner out. We will be back! read more

The service was great, the food was very good, and they have awesome perks for birthdays and anniversaries! (We were celebrating both.) We also really loved the atmosphere. Everything was delicious and reasonably priced. I enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant. The hostess sat us by the screened door and it was just perfect for our afternoon lunch. We ordered the four cheese Caesar, meatloaf and cheeseburger and it was more than enough food for the both of us. My wife and I live in the area and like to try new places. We were especially excited to see a new place in Port. The place looks good and feels very inviting. We were there on a Saturday night and it was packed (a good sign right out of the gate). For the meal: We ordered the crab and artichoke fondue to start - pretty good but nothing special, just needed something else. Our server was good but not great and did most of what you'd expect....greater us right away even though she was busy, came back, introduced herself, took our drink/app order and then told us the specials. She was slow to remove the app plates, which is a pet peeve of mine, but nothing egregious. I ordered the ribs - they were good, not overlooked/fall off the bone as another reviewer wrote. I say that because in hate when ribs are over done, they should be tender but not fall off the bone, that's just code for "we over cooked them". The homemade French fries were good, not great. My wife ordered the lemon/caper chicken with veggies. The chicken was totally lacking lemon flavor but was done well. The veggies and rice was good. Almost forgot, I got the soup and my wife got a salad. I enjoyed the soup but it needed salt, that being said, I'd order it again. Now for some critical feedback: 1. Our server cook our silverware with the app plates, as she should have. However, she didn't seem to remember that, so we had to ask for more once our entrees arrived. She made a comment about "stealing our silverware" and brought us a new set, rolled in a napkin. I'm not a fan of having to keep my silverware. Unless you're at a place with paper napkins, they should bring you new utensils for the entree, and just the utensils, not a napkin rolled around them. 2. Ribs should always be served with a small bowl for the bones, period. The customer shouldn't have to place the bones on the plate with the yet uneaten food or on the table, as I did. 3. Finally, they need something chocolate on the menu for dessert. We went to another restaurant for dessert because they didn't have anything chocolate. Overall, we enjoyed it and we'll go back. I could have ordered almost anything on the menu as it all sounded good. We also thought the price was fair for the area and for the quality of food we got. read more

What a gem of a restaurant found in the small town of Port Washington. They have a concept and menu that belongs in downtown Milwaukee. Lots if gluten free and vegan options. Most if the meats and produce is purchased locally. They decor is beautiful and full of repurposed furniture and decorations. The French onion soup is awesome. I had the Beer Braised Short Ribs and it was to die for. They have wine and beer pairing suggestions with every entree. The only reasons they are losing a star is that they do not serve filtered water and the city tap water is nasty, and the homemade bread is dry and tasteless. Otherwise they would have 5 stars.
