We tend to stop at this place on the way back to St. Louis from Kansas City. It's right off 70, so it makes for a nice pit stop. There are no raves posted because this place is horrible! I tried it for lunch ordering a Smoked Ham Sandwich - 10 minutes later waitress delivers the message they are out of ham. I asked her what was good then and she did not know "because I don't eat this stuff". Ok then bring me a Smoked Turkey Sandwich - 10 minutes later she delivers the message they are out of turkey. Ok, I don't want to strike out so what do you have - "I know we have pork steak" - ok then bring me the pork steak sandwich. I will drink some tea - no tea just canned drinks and bottle water, whatever bring me water. Here she came with my pork steak sandwich - a nice thick pork steak with 2 slices of light bread on a plate. Holy Cow what next? Well next was when she came and sat down at my table and started telling me she was so tired she had not been to see her mother in 4 months, typical hard luck stories you hear from the hairdresser or something. We found this restaurant on Yelp! during our trip down Highway 70 while searching for a Sunday lunch spot on the way home from a weekend in Columbia. The dining room is perfectly adequate for a BBQ type meal as most visitors won't be looking for much more than clean table. We were greeted quickly and the waiter took our order right away. There's not a ton to choose from, but we weren't expecting a menu with much more. The dining room wasn't that crowded but we were still impressed with the speed in which our food arrived. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, and the corn bread casserole. This is $7 worth of food, so if value is what you're looking for you need to stop here soon. The meat on the sandwich was plenty for me but the portion wasn't as generous as some BBQ joints tend to serve. The potato salad tasted as I expected but nothing to rave about. The corn casserole was really good and this was probably the item that exceeded my expectations the most. The pork was good (maybe a little dry) and the sauce was pretty good but very tangy. The spicy sauce seemed like a good choice. There's nothing mind blowing here. If you're looking for the best BBQ meal of your life or you are a connoisseur, you won't find championship BBQ here, but remember the sandwich set you back $5. The bottom line is that if you're looking for BBQ that's quick, inexpensive and you want to support a local restaurant, this is a great spot and you'll probably be pleased with your choice. It's a good choice for St. Louisans traveling to or from the Lake, Jeff. City, or Columbia, but probably not a destination restaurant unless you live in the area, in which case you don't need Yelp to tell you about it. I finally found the worst bbq spot. My wife and I just happened to pass by and she smelled the smoke which put her in the mood for bbq. We ordered pulled pork sandwiches with a side of beans and slaw. Also a slab of ribs. The sandwich might have been OK but the sauce they use is awful. A sour taste I can't put my finger on. The beans were OK but I was wondering if they were Campbell's that they doctored up with some meat. The slaw was good. We saved the ribs for dinner. I could only manage to gnaw my way through two of them before I gave up. Tough, chewy and I literally go to a point where I could not bite through the meat! And then there's that awful sauce again. Needless to say, I threw the ribs away. I'm glad I don't live in Warrenton and I have far, far better bbq places to visit. read more

Gave it a second chance last week. Potatoes in potatoe salad not fully cooked with thin sauce. Beef brisket and pork brisket pretty much dried out. Dried out like jerky. Coleslaw just viniger type. Mediocre food ... certainly not worth driving to from the greater St. Louis area. If you choose to visit, however, brisket would be your best bet; the ribs and chicken are below average. All sandwiches come slathered with sauce, the sauce is so-so. The sides are adequate. If you need a roadtrip, go to Kansas City for quality BBQ. Menu stated domestic beer $2 and imported beer $2.50. Then when we got our bill we were told that all bottled beer is $2.50. How can you call beer made in the USA imported just because it is in a bottle? I know it is only 50 cents and if I hadn't spent over an hour in that crumby place I wouldn't have minded. I stopped here today looking for some good BBQ before leaving MO and I found it. Finding the place is a little tricky, you just have to keep your eyes peeled and don't completely trust your gps. When you pull up it is a small shack with an indoor seating room. If you are looking for fancy this ain't your spot. The interior walls are galvanized roofing and OSB painted red, and with all the deer antlers haphazardly hung on the walls and rafters this is not PETA friendly lol. After a little good conversation with the Boss, she brought me a pork sandwich that was to die for and very good potato salad. Good simple place, very good food, I am sure they will get my fifth star next time I am in MO and I get to try something else on the menu. read more

By far the best barbecue sauce I've ever had I know it's just a preference thing but I consider myself pretty picky most barbecue sauces either have to much vinegar or sugar for my liking ..The pulled pork was great , I can smoke meat with the best of um and I know how hard it can be to smoke a whole chicken and have it turn out moist and these guys have figured it out.. Wasn't sure this was a good idea upon arrival, but it was a recommendation from the clerk at the hotel. This place qualifies as a "dive" in my book but that is not a bad thing. Had the Brisket sandwich and it was good, brisket was tender and had a nice smoke taste. Sauce was a little different to me, had a little sweet taste in it I could not ID. Went back a day later and had the 1/2 rack of ribs. Again a great smokey flavor with a nice rub on it. Really didn't need the sauce. The coleslaw was not a good choice! It is a vinegar based slaw, that I don't mind, but this was nothing but red cabbage, red onion and vinegar. Not good. Don't expect any fancy decor here, a tin shed with tables and chairs, wood burner in the corner for the winter and a window A/C unit for the summer. Only been once, ordered the sliced brisket sandwich to go. The guys were nice enough to package meat, sauce, and bun separately. But - the meat was dry and tasteless and very fatty along the edge. What a great barbecue place! Don't let the outside or the small size make you turn around. It's not much, but there is plenty of space to eat inside and it is very nice. The seating area smelled like cat urine, the brisket sandwiches were nasty. They tasted like they had been reheated in the microwave and were totally impossible to chew. My kids and I spit them out. After telling two different employees they were gross and nothing happening I paid and left. I got robbed of $18 for gross food, chips in a bag, and cans of lemonade. I don't know if they were once good and stopped caring or if this is how it's always been and the good reviews are from friends/relatives trying to be nice. I wouldn't go there if I were you. I'm going to be surprised if we aren't sick later. I'll be even more surprised if they aren't closed for business by the end of the year. I am absolutely floored by the average to good reviews I have read. My husband and I having recently moved to Warrenton, saw the ads for this place and decided to give it a try. Shack is very appropriate. It is rustic to the point of seeming unclean. The service was mediocre, and we didn't see anyone there but children. The food,,,,we got the advertised all you can eat special. The fried catfish wasn't bad..what was supposed to be bbq chicken wings was a greasy looking thigh,, that neither my husband or myself could even bring ourselves to try,,, and the ribs were tough and flavorless. Another thing we noticed is that everyone who did come in had questions about the menu,,, as if they hadn't been there before,,,,like us. I don't think its a place you patronize twice. read more

Since this is the only bbq place within 17 miles I have went to them on and off since they opened. Very inconsistant. Sometimes the food is ok...nothing special. Other times borderline unedible. They will give you old meat thet seems like it was cooked 3 days ago. Over 50 percent of the time you will only be able to eat 50 percent of it because it is way over cooked. Sometimes there will be a hint of smoke.......sometimes the smoke is so over powering you'll want to toss it. There sides are good. I like their little porch you can eat in. But hell........Your a bbq place.......Learn how to cook meat. Toninght is the last time I go to the place because I got a pork steak that was about as appetizing as 4 day old chinese slathered in way too much sauce to cover up they were trying to get rid of it. My wife called to complain in a nice manner and said sometimes they are good sometimes not so. They asked if she wanted another and she said no.
