Not great. I went to rent a truck yesterday and was told if I brought back the tank with less gas than had been in when I picked it up there would be a 30$ refueling charge plus 4.50 a gallon. I put in one gallon as I had only driven 14 miles. The guy charged me 6.75 and I'm wondering Where did the woman get 30 plus 4.50 a gallon as the other guy said he had no idea what I was talking about. Shady. And hidden charges. read more

This is the worst storage experience I've ever had. They won't adjust the date our payment is due, which is understandable. A little annoying but it's their facility. Then they renovated three months ago and they put our possessions into 4 big moving pods and now we have no idea where anything is, we have to make an appointment 3 days in advance to get into the pods (which sit OUTSIDE the facility), and they switched everybody that rents storage units to auto pay without warning last month. We told them to stop doing something we never authorized and they wouldn't reverse the charges, so we just accepted it as a one time occurrence and hey, we owed the money anyway right? Except today was the due date and guess what I just saw a charge on my bank statement for? Done with this place. read more

I made an appointment to have a hitch installed on my van. I was on time for my appointment and they started the work very quickly. While waiting three people walked in with no masks! A customer told them they were supposed to be wearing face masks but they ignored him. The girl behind the counter did nothing and said nothing. I will not be coming back to this U-Haul for anything. Had an appointment today at 11 to have a hitch installed. Showed up on time, they tell me it'll be a few hours. Okay great, we walk down to Hello Betty, have lunch, drinks & then walk back. It's about 1:30, they had just took our car back. So we leave again, walk down to the Pier, hang out, walk back to Coldstone, get ice cream. Get back to Uhaul around 3, THEY WERE JUST GETTING STARTED. When I asked why, they told me oh because they got busy on the lot. 4:30, George comes out and tells us they have the wrong part and they'll have to reschedule us to come back in tomorrow. Clearly, I'm disgusted at this point. I asked to be the first car in the shop for my rescheduled appointment. George tells me he has another appointment. (Okay, so did I at 11 today). He tells me he'll discount the cost of labor for only the hitch $60. $60 off is NOT a reasonable compensation. They had my number because I scheduled the appointment and gave them my husbands when we checked in because my battery was low. When we got home I had a voicemail from Mary at 2:44pm asking if we were coming in or wanted to cancel our appointment. (What? You have our car in your shop.) Unorganized. Rude. We are now looking for a trailer to buy instead of renting from them because of how awful their customer service is. read more

Came to drop off my client who is picking up a truck for her move. I'm wearing sturdy walking shoes. Almost fell in the bathroom where there's a super slippery spot. It's an all tile floor so I'd have been seriously injured if I'd fallen. Immediately told their floor person who ignored me and my obvious concern. Unfortunately there is not an option for no stars.....U-Haul's billboard says "Prices you can afford, won't be beat", however, when my husband asked if they could price match Penske's quote for a truck and trailer rental, they literally laughed at him and said that they couldn't come down $1,600. They should take their false advertisement off of display to the public and get some more courteous employees who know how to deal with customers in a more respectful manner. I suggest you go with Penske! They treated us great! Every time we contacted Uhaul, they were always unpleasant and rude. Not to mention, they are way overpriced! read more

This was the worst uhaul experiment of my life. The people running the place are slower than molasses. So very unhelpful and I had a hard time understating anything they were saying. When we returned the truck, I waned to pay for the rental and my boyfriend to pay for the gas difference. They said that wasn't possible and then it ended up being two transactions on MY CARD which makes no sense. read more

They went over all the safety issues that comes with the hitch hook up. I learned a lot. If I owned this business I would be very proud of all this group. read more

Is there a way to give this place NEGATIVE stars? This U-haul is EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL AND FRAUDULENT! I tried getting a refund (because I didn't use the truck) from the assistant manager, Vivian, and she led me on a wild goose chase. She says she'd give me a call back and never did. I had to call her back, and she had the audacity to say, "Let me call you back, I'm going to lunch."....Ummm lady, if you're a so-called assistant manager, do your damn job and save the stomach for a later time. I had to call customer service instead who later was able to do what this incompetent assistant manager was supposed to do. Customer service was better than some unprofessional woman in management who can't do her job. She then later called back saying I received my refund...DO NOT take credit for something you DID NOT do. Because I felt like it, I filed a complaint against this establishment, especially that horrible woman, and will continue to let people in Oceanside know to never ever consider or use any u-haul service. read more

I came in at my appointed time for a trailer hitch install. Had to wait in line for 10 minutes. The lady then informed me that their install guy was on lunch. While I was waiting the manager ignored me while I waited. While I was in line the worker asked the mangager for some help before his break and he was very condesending to her then left while I was in line. While still in line he came back then helped another customer. I also observed him being rude and disrepectful to other customers that came in as well. The manager eventually offered to install the hitch himself. It took a while but was eventually done. Before I drove off I checked it and it was the wrong hitch. They replaced it with the other one, having to wait another 45 minutes. The manager charged me more money as the second hitch was more expensive than the first. When I requested a refund of the install fee he became rude and unapologetic. Poorly run, hostile environment. read more

If your company is going to charge a credit card without someone's authorization you should at least call and tell them about it. I was renting a u - haul for business purposes and used my personal card to get the truck. When I returned the truck and went to pay with my company card and found out that my personal card was charged with out any notification at all! I didn't even get a courtesy call or email e - mail receipt! This is the second time that u - hauls customer service has put me in a bad spot in 3 month period of time. Worst ever customer service. Make an appointment to have some wiring looked at on a trailer. Pulled in the lot and went inside to get assistance. Employee came in screaming and yelling that I needed to move the trailer right away. Not in a nice way but screaming like a lunatic. Ask him where I should move it to to get it looked at he turned around and walked out the door. After a half an hour finally got to speak to The Hitch Pro. He called me a couple of hours later and said the trailer was fixed. When I went was told they didn't even work on it. Hitch Pro called me and said he replaced a broken lightbulb and everything was good to go. Obviously a complete lie read more

We went in to get propane for our RV. Darrell was very helpful getting us backed into the propane area. He got our propane filled up quickly and we paid our bill and were on our way. As we were driving out we heard someone yell "Sir". We stopped driving immediately. Darrell had noticed that our tire pressure was extremely low. We backed up and Darrell checked all of our tires and filled them to the correct pressure. We are grateful Darrell notices this and offered to fill them up. read more

Great truck the size I needed was available they just forgot the dolly's I ordered so when I arrived with truck no dolly's and movers where there and ready so had to reschedule movers for the next day was an inconvenience and cost me more money. They did reimburse me for 2 of 3 days for the use of dolly's. Was very frustrating. Also tried to return 3 unused furniture blankets to same person whom just sold them to me and would not refund, they were in original packaging unopened with 'Uhaul" written all over them. read more

First of all, I can't speak to renting a truck, I've never rented one from U-haul. I will speak to their awesome customer service! Tonight, was one of three times that I waited last minute to get the propane tanks on my RV filled. I have two 7-gallon tanks, and tonight, like the last 2 times, I have literally pulled into the lot 5 minutes before close, and both times they have taken care of me and made sure that I got the Propane I needed. Paul and Mary helped me tonight, and I know I was inconveniencing them, but still, they took the time to fill my tanks and take care of me! Very difficult access to storage unit, not just the physical aspect of it but also the ritual you must go through (waiting in line while others rent trucks) to get a special key to open unit. Even after spending close to $3K on both the unit and various rentals, the staff treated me as if I did not matter. Although most communication is via email I could never get a confirmation email that I had vacated my unit and paid it in full nor could I get any official U Haul document from anyone at the front desk. read more

We reserved a tow dolly for Sunday afternoon. One hour prior to pick up they called to tell us they didn't have the reserved tow dolly and wanted to up grade us to an auto transport. When we arrived we realized the auto transport was over 2000 lbs which was above our towing capacity. The girl at the desk was trying to tell us it was ONLY 150 lbs over maximum and it was our only option, unless we were willing to wait an extra day and drive 2 hours out of our way to El Cajon or 4 hours to Alpine. I tried to explain I could be cited for towing over weight and risked damaging my vehicle. Her co-worker stepped in and tried to help me find another location, which earned her a number of dirty looks and snide comments from the original clerk. Although I appreciate the 2nd clerks willingness to help, I won't be back and this is a location I will not recommend. read more

I needed a trailer on short notice last Sunday. I called at 12:15 and was picking it up by 1pm. The phone reservation system was slow that day but still only took 10 minutes to reserve it. I got a 5x8 ft trailer, the price was better than I expected. The next day I realized I would need it for longer and even though it was within 2 hours of the time I was supposed to drop it off they accommodated me. Great experience, would definately rent from them again. read more

Faulty install of my hitch on my Prius C, for my bicycle hitch. I had a rattling noise, took my car to Toyota. They found two incorrect bolts put in my U-Haul hitch. It was installed at the U-Haul place. It cost me $133 to get it fixed. Manager at U-Haul refused to admit any fault. And I'm still dealing with their insurance company. I had a Ford Fiesta hitch installed there before. It had a squeaky sound over bumps with my bike. After this, I think they did not do a good job on that either. I wish I had it checked. Don't get hitches installed here! read more

Scheduled on a Monday to have a hitch placed on Saturday 7 am same week. Received at least five calls on Monday. One saying they made a mistake and couldn't install the hitch. They then called again to say that instead of 7 they would install at 8 because they had double booked me and was their fault. A couple of hours later they call again to say the same thing. It was always two or three different people. Later they call and say "come now, like right now we can take care of the hitch if you come today " I rearrange my schedule and start driving to their location only to get another call: "Sorry, we don't have the bolts for your hitch. Come back on Saturday as planned." They're ordering the bolts for the hitch. I wait and on Friday night they call again saying they ordered the wrong bolts!! At this time am in a party. Call disconnects once and they leave a voice mail saying there's space on Saturday at the San Clement location. Since there's been a clear lack of coordination and organization I call them up again only to talk to a 7th person saying they don't know anything and I'm responsible to calling the other location since it's where I'm supposed to go. They now transfer me to customer service and I get the laziest most unmotivated sounding voice on the phone. Decide to hang up and try a different place. Terrible organization and coordination of their services. I've used uhaul many times and it's been good but this place bad. Avoid if possible. read more

We called to order a hitch to be installed in one of our vehicles. We paid $100 to have the hitch expedited and were given an 8 a.m. "appointment time" for installation by the call center. We were then called back by the local office and told no one would be there at 8 a.m. since they weren't even open then. Asked what appointment time was available and were told 3 p.m. We arrived at 2:45 p.m. to ensure we were on time. We were immediately told that there were two cars that had been dropped off ahead of us and the installer had no idea when he could get to it. When we asked about our 3 p.m. appointment time, he said "that's a drop off time and we will get to you when we can". We were told when making the reservation that the installation would "take 1-1/2 hours and we should just plan to drop it and grab something to eat in the area." The installer then indicated that the work would take 2-1/2 hours and he hadn't had lunch so needed his 45 minute lunch break. Now I wouldn't deny anyone their lunch break, but perhaps this should have been taken earlier in the day, like at lunch time, and on a drop in client, not one with an appointment. We were then told he had no idea where the hitch was that we had expedited for an additional $100. He made a call and finally located it. The hitch was installed and completed at 6 p.m. but by then we were unable to attend a very important family event we had planned on based upon the information given when making the appointment. I don't blame the installer...I think the problem is with the call center and uneducated appointment makers. They need to know exactly what services and products they are selling before committing to customers and then causing their installers to be unable to deliver. read more

We showed up at 3 the day before our move to pick up our trailer. All of our belongings had already been moved out of our apartment and into the parking area at our apartment complex. Needless to say, we had to have our trailer and be on the road the next morning early. The woman behind the desk pulled up our reservation, was super helpful and very eager to make sure everything was correct. We went out to hook up the trailer and Jose, the worst worker we have ever encountered in our life, began to help us. He found that the connector box on my truck (the one used to connect the lights from the truck to the trailer) had a short. At this point it was 3:30 pm. He said it would take too long to fix that day (the store closes at 5), and that there was nothing anyone could do. He "went inside to talk to his manager" and came back out to say there was no way we would be on the road before Thursday (it was Sunday). We were baffled. Then a saint named Paul descended, pushed Jose out of the way, and got to work. He said he could fix the problem ASAP and we would be on the road as planned. He stripped the box and wires himself, reconnected a new box and fixed the problem in 15 minutes. In the meantime my wife and I went inside to reserve a full truck just to be safe in the case that Paul couldn't fix the problem. Again, the woman behind the desk was incredibly helpful, understanding and went out of her way to help us. The just: Jose was pathetic, rude, abrasive and gave up because he didn't want to work (and ultimately just disappeared and we thankfully never saw him again) - he should lose his job Paul saved our entire move, worked his butt off to fix a problem, went out of his way to get involved and was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable The woman behind the desk who's name we never got (young, blonde) was awesome as well, helpful and really funny. She totally put us at ease in what seemed to be a potentially very stressful situation. read more

On 4/16 4pm we rented a cargo van from here and did a night drop on it around 9pm that night. I had authorized the 89.99$ payment (which isn't this locations fault they are full of stupid hidden fees but whatever we all know about those already). Anyway, on 4/21 I see a charge for over 400$ from U-Haul!!!! Putting me very much in the negative considering we live paycheck to paycheck and I had paid bills the night before. I called and right away the woman on the phone had told me they made a mistake (she was awesome); turns out whoever finished up our paperwork put in that we had the truck for TWELVE DAYS instead of the 5 hours we had it. It hadn't even been 12 days since we had rented the truck! I get it, mistakes happen. BUT please- check and double check paperwork before you type it in and charge my debit card; and that's not something I should have to confirm you will do. It took about 4 days for our refund to go through and I'm still working with my bank to get another 200$ in overdraft fees taken off because of this incident. read more

Unreliable: I made an appointment to have trailer wiring installed, called to confirm it, and they still lost it after I drove a half hour to get there and took time off work. They then quoted me twice the price & time to do it while I waited. The associate could not have been less interested in their error. My son was just getting out of the military and needed a truck to move over 400 miles. The customer service we received at this location was outstanding! They made the experience easy and quick. They went out and did a walk around the truck with us, checked the gas gage and answered all our questions. They went out of their way to make this a great experience! I would recommend this location to anyone needing a moving truck or moving supplies, they are wonderful to work with. It's wonderful to know all UHaul locations are not created equal, as we had just had a bad experience at a different location. Need a truck......look them up! read more

Very poor customer service, and had me waiting well over 20 minutes in line (only 2 people in front of me) to purchase a few moving materials. TWENTY MINUTES. The lady was on the phone for an extended amount of time- normally I wouldn't mind if there was a courtesy "I'll be right with you", which there wasn't. Total lack of time management, and nearly lost my business. Two stars only because it's in a good location and has everything you would need for moving. read more

I always had a positive experience using Uhaul in the past, so was completely disappointed with my most recent experience ... I had set up my online reservation a week before picking up the Uhaul truck. The day before pick up, I get a call and the rep. tells me the truck I reserved would not be available at the pick up location because the truck I was going to get was going to be out an extra day and I would have to pick up at a different location, which was farther and off the track of my moving, so would have been quite a bit more in gas. So I asked if there was a bigger truck I could get at the original pick up location, there was so I took it. I get there and the truck is way too big, so I get a smaller one than the original, which meant having to give up items and boxes that would not fit in the truck. As heartbreaking as that was, that wasn't even the worst part! When I was in the Uhaul store (an actual Uhaul store) the guy who took care of my 2 separate contracts, Ryan, gave me a total cost amount that was higher than I anticipate, so I had to use a different card. Ryan said "It's just a hold on the truck, the money wont be taken out until you return the truck, bring it back the day before your scheduled and you'll save some money." So, off I go. I was scheduled for 3 days and was able to return the truck (at the same pick up location) on the 2nd day (since it was a smaller truck, not as much to unload) before they closed. A very nice guy checks out the truck, I filled the gas tank, no damages, all's good. I ask him, before going in to pay "can I pay with a different card than the one I used to hold the truck?" He says "yup, they'll take care of it inside." Here comes the worst part ... The cashier (not Ryan, he wasn't there) says "you get $20 back because you didn't use as many miles as you thought!" I say "Awesome, and I brought it back early, so I save there too." She says, "No, you would have had to bring it back by 10 AM, so no. Can I do anything else for you?" I say, well yeah, I'd like to use a different card than the one I used to hold the truck." Her: "Hold. you paid. There's no hold." Me: "What? Ryan said it was a hold, I'd pay when I drop off." Her: "No. it's been paid for." Of course I went into the "What!!" stage. So, Ryan and his misinformation caused a HUGE financial burden on top of a move. Late fees on bills that can't be paid, bounce fees on bills that were paid!! This is just BAD BUSINESS! Dishonesty in business is nothing new, but I had always believed Uhaul to be above such tactics. I, like many people, live paycheck to paycheck and moving is expensive enough, but to be put in this situation by a company that supposedly prides it's self on making the move easier is inexcusable. Do yourself a favor, don't risk it, give up Uhaul and go to Budget, Penske or any other truck rental, you'll be glad you did. UPDATE: Come to find out, Ryan is the GM!! read more

I am changing my review ( I was pretty mad when I wrote it) as the owner of the company contacted me after reading my review and tried to explain the reason for the issues. I will just say, because I would want to know as a consumer, that you should make sure the mechanic is present to install your hitch when you arrive at your designated time, and then make sure that they begin work in a timely manner. I ended up leaving after an hour and a half when they hadn't touched my car and therefore didn't have any work done so I cannot speak to the quality of their work. read more
