This place is such a cozy place for a dinner on a Sunday night. It's a restaurant thats run by these elder men and it's so cute. They bring out the food and the service is top notch. The dosa was crispy and filled with so much flavors. We also got their Manchurian broccoli and mushroom and it was so good and had the right amount of spice. Basically this is one of the better Indian restaurants, as far as the food, in Chicago. It's not just even including the vegetarian ones. Udupi Palace is one of the many restaurants in Devon Avenue and their specialty is South Indian vegetarian. Meaning there's lots of spicy items. The usual things like dosas are here, along with sides such as idly, vada, and more. After having just one dosa, I get stuffed, because these are that big. If wondering which of these to get, just get any one. The whole menu is vegetarian. Come at lunch to get a special. It's $16 for any dosa or any uttapam, and these come with either idly or vada. Each of these comes with coconut chutney and sambar. The dosas are the best things here I think. Last time I had the Masala Dosa. The rest of the menu is worth exploring too. An uttapam is like a thicker dosa. This one has toppings on it though. About the only complaint here is a big one. Bad service. A long wait for a menu. Then they never refill water. Eating spicy food one can't wait around to get it. They need to pick up the pace. For sure I would like to rate it higher. It has some pretty slow service though. Ordered a bunch of dosai and uttapam to share. Overall, pretty legit spot. You get a lot of options for fillings. Personally liked the uttapam texture with the green chilis as well as the paper thin (dosai? Not sure but the one on the photo) that we ordered with onions. This was great. Apparently made from a different type of flour (millet I think). Paper thin and extra crisp. Very more-ish. Overall, a decent spot for dosai etc in Chicago. It won't be the best ever, but it's pretty legit and decent especially for Chicago (defo don't compare with other cities or with India). I definitely would not recommend this restaurant nor am I going back to this restaurant. Took my mom out for launch. Our order was Paper masala dosa and her was rava masala dosa swaminarayan (No Onions or Garlic) and made order for veg hakka noodles and veg Manchurian and pizza dosa to go. Instead my mom's order had uncooked YELLOW dal also had too much salt. ONLY good this was there Sambar was mild. On other hand My dosa was incorrectly made correctly. Paper masala dosa is normally large in size and was bit salty but it didn't bother me that much. We where hungry. So we ate it. For to go order we got fried rice instead off noodles and gobi Manchurian and no cheese pizza dosa. We were like you guys took over udipi palace name and they ruined there name...yes they had full vegetarian menu. But its not a good place if you screw up the food. NEVER visit this restaurant!! This was the utmost disastrous experience I ever had at an Indian restaurant on Devon Avenue. We went in on Saturday afternoon. There were two tables occupied by the time we ordered. Food: We ordered floating idly, masala Dosa and dahi vada. - The Dahi Vada was the disaster of my life. A ready to eat Vada in simple yogurt that was refrigerated to a stone cold was served with no toppings on it. The Vada pieces were as hard as stone. - Then comes the dosa.. the dosa had no issues but the dippings - chutney and sambar were worse than the worst nightmarish lentil soup that you could ever imagine. It had no salt, no spice, no taste. Restaurant Cleanliness: - Then coming to the neatness of the restaurant itself, the floor was sticky as if someone just vomited and the crew just cleaned the floor. The restroom was a nightmare. - The manager said he had no idea that there was a Yelp promotion they were running for the Yelp customers on their first check-in. I was running errands after work, and had a stop on Devon. I was across the street from Udupi and decided to pop in and get a couple of Samosas to go. I didn't order anything else, and it is a good thing. The order was ready in less than five minutes and it smelled so good. There were the two biggest Samosas I've ever seen, and they came with Cilantro Chutney and Tamarind Chutney. The Samosas were unbelievable, without a doubt the best Samosas I've ever had. Fresh, not greasy,or oily, nice light pastry which was tender and and had nice little air bubbles. But the filling ... oh, my, it was the best Samosa on the planet! Nice peas, perfectly cooked potatoes, carrots and corn. An amazing combo? I had planned on eating one, but instead ate both for dinner. I'm happy and as I've got to return to Devon Avenue early next week, ill also return to Udupi Palace. read more

Mixed feelings: inconclusive On the one hand, we had a good korma, one not drowning in cream, and therefore maybe the best korma ever, and some fresh bread, and attentive service. On the other hand, the bhendi (okra) dish was oily and it was very likely reheated. Spices were good, but it was unappetizing as a whole. There was a time when this WAS the spot to dine on South Indian vegetarian & dosa specialties. Back then the dosa & chutneys were spot on. Nowadays the dosa is same but the dips and chutneys are watered down. "Nalla illa" Their time has come and gone. Taste is alright enough to give the masses an idea of the flavors they can create but the restaurant is poorly maintained. Also, their servers could use a dose of reality and training, to help them assist customers in a friendly manner. If you aren't South Indian or specific about flavors and textures, it'll do. What happened? Has the ownership changed hands? Restrooms were filthy. There were areas and aspects of dining-in that we found disgusting. With the pandemic still raging on I am sure there are down-times. Those are the best times for management to crack that proverbial whip and get the facility cleaned. I've had better dosa, chutney, and sambar--but this place is still very good if you are craving dosa. I think tweaking their sambar and chutney recipe, and fermenting their dosa batter longer would make them excellent. Udipi restaurants in India are one of the supreme representatives of South Indian delicacies and we entered this place with a lot of expectations. I'm from Minneapolis and was in Chicago for the New Year weekend. Since my wife was feeling little under the weather and we had our lunch already in a different place, we wanted to just order a tomato soup to get her feel better and my cousins ordered filter coffees for themselves. I don't have to stress enough on how much a filter coffee from a South Indian style restaurant is prominent and how much our expectations on this restaurant would have been. One soup and two coffees took their own sweet time to be served. To our utter surprise the soup wasn't hot and had chunks of bread floating on it. Adding to it, the breads weren't even fried fully to look like croutons and quickly turned soggy. Like a sponge on water, the soup was soon absorbed and the bread croutons had become all bigger, hardly giving us any glimpse of the soup beneath it. Like rubbing salt on the wound, the coffee didn't meet our expectations either and was another sour spot that we hit. We called out our host and informed him that we were pretty disappointed with both the orders. While he was apologetic and offered a replacement with a different soup, he defended that the coffee should have been good. Since we were running shot of time, we were not in a position to wait for another 15 or 20 minutes for a soup and decided to pay for what we had(rather not had) and left the place. I certainly hope that the place must have some enticing menu to offer, which we didn't try our hands on, but to us get back to this place for a dining will definitely take some time. read more

This may be my favorite restaurant in town! Cooked with care. Flavors that come alive. They specialize in South Indian cuisine such as the dosas, which are a grand presentation...but their take on the north Indian dishes is quite unique and excellent as well. For instance, they have the best flavor of paneer makhani in town in my personal taste. I've been making my way through the menu for a few years and will continue to do so. I feel that this restaurant deserves some credit for the quality putting out there. What a disaster. I hate to use time to leave a negative review. I'll start with the positives: they have no problem checking for COVID vaccination cards and the general waiters were nice. That's enough to justify the single star they earned. What didn't go well? We order a menu item and the item was wrong. In some cases, hey, maybe the customer mispoke and got a similar menu item. Some cases are a situation where the waiter misunderstands. I'll argue that it was the latter since the dish we received had ingredients that my guest hates. We communicated this to the manager who went over, and instead tried to tell us this is what we ordered. He shows what his waiter wrote, and we explain, no, that ain't it. He walks away and avoids our table. Time for the check. My guest ate the dish she hated because there was no recourse or offer to even make the dish she wanted, as I would have been willing to pay. Nope. Nothing. The original waiter comes by, we explain the situation and says "well, price of both the dishes are the same" and walked away. Unreal. Way to lose customers over $12! read more

This place is a joke. For people who normally don't have access to Indian food (mid-west dwellers) this may be an ok option. We were from bay area used to much higher standards, we found this place an utter embarrassment and a colossal waste of time and money. Udupi is a south Indian cuisine. This restaurant is run by North Indians who have no idea how to cook or serve south Indian dishes. The prices are exorbitant. Every item we ordered tasted very poor and inauthentic. They have not even done their homework. They serve Pongal with curd & pickle instead of chutney and sambar (jokers!). We ordered south Indian and Punjabi thali. They were almost identical. The food here is outstanding and the decor elegant. I ordered the Royal Thali to taste a Variety of dishes. Every thing was excellent. the food arrived quickly and all the hot dishes were served piping hot. First came out the Rasam Soup lovely and sour and spicy. Then a the appetizers all crisp and served with excellent chutneys, the mint was my favorite. The presentation of the Royal Thali which was served next was elegant. The palak was my favorite it was light and fluffy/creamy in texture and had a wonderfully savory flavor. The papadum was so nice and crisp it was a joy to eat even by itself. Excellent food. We came here early evening, starving for not having had lunch or breakfast, and ordered the Special Assortment - came with Medhu Vada, Chilli Pakoda, Mixed Pakoda, Aloo Pakoda, Veggie Cutlet, Aloo Bonda (Batata Vada), and Veggie Samosa. It's enough to fill two people up entirely. In our case, we ordered an extra order of Medhu Vada (coz they are just SO good!). The accompanying sambar, coconut chutney, AMD coriander-mint chutney were all excellent. I've had a mysore masala dosa before from here, and my God, I haven't had a crisper dosa anywhere. What I love most about this place is that they are extremely sweet and hospitable here. Love being here, for a crew of all men, they are incredibly sweet and sensitive people. Though Husb declined (*cough*refused*) to join me in picking up groceries at Patel Brothers this morning (thanks, NFL), I decided, nonetheless, to surprise him with some takeout for lunch. I figured that even *IF* his Dosa got a bit steamy on the way home and lost its crunch, it would serve him right--just sayin'... Albeit neat and tidy, the interior was decidedly NOT palatial (as the name would suggest). This wasn't off-putting; it could mean that the food here speaks for itself. The gentleman who helped me was very courteous and told me everything would be ready in a prompt 15 minutes (which it was). By the time I got home, I was full on drooling--it all smelled so good. 1) Mysore Masala Dosa: The flavors to me were right on point, and I could tell from spying while waiting that the dosa *would* have been crunchy, had it not taken a half-hour drive back to Pilsen with me. In my opinion, the Coconut Chutney and Sambar served with the Dosa were also good, but Husb thought that they both could have used some more salt. 2) Manchurian Ghobi: Perfect. We both thoroughly enjoyed and give this an A+ 3) Samosa Chaat: Normally, this is one of our favorites (and we don't like to share!), so I ordered two of these. Unfortunately, this move was optimistically premature... The Samosa filling was absolutely delicious, as savory and rich as I like it. I'll also give the benefit of the doubt that the pastry *would* have been crunchy, had we eaten it there. The Chaat, however, was not at all to my taste. Too much tamarind rendered it much too sweet for me; almost reminiscent of a can of Bush's Baked Beans (which I absolutely DESPISE)... Personally, I prefer that this dish be full-on savory and not sweet whatsoever. Given another chance, I'd order their Samosas plain. read more

For those that are not familiar, Udipi, is a quintessential South Indian vegetarian restaurant and inherently South Indian food is quite different from North Indian in terms of how it looks, tastes and/or is prepared. But fret not, since Udipi also has some of the traditional North Indian food on the menu. Some of their staples include Idli (steamed puffed rice dumpling) served with a lentil soup (sambhar) and coconut chutney. It's a hearty and healthy appetizer or breakfast food. If you wanted a little unhealthy then try the vada since that's a fried alternative. In addition Dosa is the main component which is a thin rice crepe prepared with little oil to make it crispy. There are several different variations of the dosa on the menu including different fillings which may include, potatoes and green peas, onions, cheese, spinach etc. or a combination of the above. Four stars for their great South Indian food. However, the last five times I've come in here they've seated me at a certain table, a table that sits right next to a basement stairway. That stairway STINKS like a dishwashing station filled with decaying food. It should be closed all the time - except they're constantly going up and down these stairs. There shouldn't even be a table next to this door *at all*, it smells digusting. Minus one star for this. Also, I notice, for some reason, they seem to serve other people in the restaurant a lot quicker. They lose another star for this. I'm not of South Asian descent, maybe my vibe's a little weird, I dunno. It shouldn't matter that I'm white and not Indian or Pakistani. But after noticing that they consistently seat me by this same foul smelling doorway, and the lack of prioritizing service to a repeat customer who generally tips quite well, I can't help but wonder if they'd rather not serve non-Indians here. Used to be my favorite place for good Southern Indian food, not trying to be fancy but authentic and tasty. Went there last week after a couple of years having not been there: the hostess was cross-border unhappy or mean and dressed like going to the gym, the waiter was not nice, and we found a long black hair in our food, the waiter didn't even attempt to make it right, just brought a replacement dish (as if it was just prepared). Very disappointed. The dosas were good, felt a bit soggy but still good, pepper masala dosa used to be my favorite, was still good. Given the ambiance and the food, the prices felt unreasonably high (even for the mango lassi), can get similar prices in any of the places around them on Devon but with better service and now possibly food. read more

Nice South Indian joint in Devon. Went on a Saturday noon to get some brunch. Due to covid, there was vedy less crowd but the restuarant is spacious and are following the covid regulations very aptly. Got the Medu Vada Sambhar and the Mysore Masala Dosa. Medu Vada came out first - crispy hot and we finished it within minutes. The Mysore Masala Dosa came next and we liked the fact it was thinner than some of the other places we have had Dosas at, so that was a plus! Special mention to the Coconut Chutney and Sambhar was made in a very authentic style. Loved the food, will be back again! read more
