Basically this is one of the better Indian restaurants, as far as the food, in Chicago. It's not just even including the vegetarian ones. Udupi Palace is one of the many restaurants in Devon Avenue and their specialty is South Indian vegetarian. Meaning there's lots of spicy items. The usual things like dosas are here, along with sides such as idly, vada, and more. After having just one dosa, I get stuffed, because these are that big. If wondering which of these to get, just get any one. The whole menu is vegetarian. Come at lunch to get a special. It's $16 for any dosa or any uttapam, and these come with either idly or vada. Each of these comes with coconut chutney and sambar. The dosas are the best things here I think. Last time I had the Masala Dosa. The rest of the menu is worth exploring too. An uttapam is like a thicker dosa. This one has toppings on it though. About the only complaint here is a big one. Bad service. A long wait for a menu. Then they never refill water. Eating spicy food one can't wait around to get it. They need to pick up the pace. For sure I would like to rate it higher. It has some pretty slow service though. Those willing to put up with this will be rewarded with good Indian food approved for vegans and vegetarians.

Ordered a bunch of dosai and uttapam to share. Overall, pretty legit spot. You get a lot of options for fillings. Personally liked the uttapam texture with the green chilis as well as the paper thin (dosai? Not sure but the one on the photo) that we ordered with onions. This was great. Apparently made from a different type of flour (millet I think). Paper thin and extra crisp. Very more-ish. Overall, a decent spot for dosai etc in Chicago. It won't be the best ever, but it's pretty legit and decent especially for Chicago (defo don't compare with other cities or with India). Worth checking out if you've never had it or if you're craving for some. Gets the job done.

Calm / family owned joint ambiance inside. Quick service and hot food. Paper dosai masala is a must order - great to share. Potato filling and sambar side were very authentic. BYOB if you are interested, but we got hot tea. Great restaurant if you are looking for a real treat.

NEVER visit this restaurant!! This was the utmost disastrous experience I ever had at an Indian restaurant on Devon Avenue. We went in on Saturday afternoon. There were two tables occupied by the time we ordered. Food: We ordered floating idly, masala Dosa and dahi vada. - The Dahi Vada was the disaster of my life. A ready to eat Vada in simple yogurt that was refrigerated to a stone cold was served with no toppings on it. The Vada pieces were as hard as stone. - Then comes the dosa.. the dosa had no issues but the dippings - chutney and sambar were worse than the worst nightmarish lentil soup that you could ever imagine. It had no salt, no spice, no taste. Restaurant Cleanliness: - Then coming to the neatness of the restaurant itself, the floor was sticky as if someone just vomited and the crew just cleaned the floor. The restroom was a nightmare. - The manager said he had no idea that there was a Yelp promotion they were running for the Yelp customers on their first check-in. Maybe it's time to simply remove the restaurant from Yelp recommendations itself.

They offer solid dosa and idle sambar. The food is fresh and brought out fairly on time. The staff was cordial . Restaurant ambiance is fair, a bit like a diner.

Manchurian idli, nice sauce, mildly spicy, and idli are fried to be crisp

The paneer wrap is very good. Everything else is very underwhelming. At least I can say I've tried it and move on. Good luck and have fun.

Very spicy and bad food. Tasteless most of it and bad for your stomach. Only order Dosa which is semi decent. Rest is worst in Chicago

I arrive within twenty-one minutes buying only a quarter's worth of time at the parking meter thinking surely that would be enough time to grab my carryout order? Guys, why was I waiting an additional twenty minutes for food when nobody was in this restaurant? I hate when a restaurant draaaaaaags without giving any reasons. Thali shops have literal fast food. Not in the American sense but the foods are as simple as crepes (dosa) served with chutney. The other items would need more time. Curries, biriyani, etc Ordered an onion dosa and a masala dosa. Texture was different from what I'm accustomed to eating. But I'm wanting something similar to South Indian style. The onion dosa contained what looked like a full, medium sized onion. In Southie style it should be pan fried till brown, sometimes incorporated into the dosa or stuffed inside, this was barely translucent. Didn't slap. The masala dosa was mid. Didn't touch much. Hate throwing away food but.. Not wasting the stomach on barely good. Something about the texture of the dosa wasn't... It just wasn't good. One and done. If a restaurant offers dosa, it's gotta be great. Maybe their other foods are better?

We tried their chicken dosa, aloo samosa, and mutton thali. I love dosas but I think I prefer dosas from a different restaurant in the neighborhood. When I say Tan you say Dory…read more Tan! Dory! Tan! Dory! Yes I know it's spelled different but the message here is to get the Tandoori. Easily the best Indian I've had. The highlights were garlic naan, Lamb Vindaloo, and of course the Tandoori Chicken. The only criticisms was that the Chili Naan was way too spicy. I like heat and Indian heat never really gets my mouth burning. This Chili was really just raw hot peppers in the Naan. Tikka masala was actually not great either. Favorite of the below was the lamb vindaloo followed by the tandoori chicken. The somosas were my favorite I've had to day- gotta get the lamb. They had those funky little indian pickles too which were great. Super aromatic. I felt it seeping through my pores (in a great way) for the next few days. Momo was solid but I'd either switch to chicken chili fry Momo or chicken 65 next time. This was our order: 2 orders of tandoori chicken 1 order of chicken tikka masala 1 order of lamb vindaloo 1 order of palak paneer 1 order of Momo 3 orders of samosas 1 order of onion pakora 4 orders of naan 4 orders of chutney 1 order of raita 1 order of pickles 1 order of dessert And we ate it all! 6 of us. Shoutout to the incredible staff and chef. We were able to meet him which was an honor and a privelage.

Well seasoned, grilled, meat soft, juicy, the fat is nicely rendered. I would get this again but it's so expensive. I've never had kebabs this moist and tasty. High way chicken kahari with bone $22- white meat, lots of spicy, some heat..complex flavors. Good with rice or naan. The restaurant was quite packed and full of patrons. Overall the restaurant was very loud and it was hard to hear in there. We ordered the Chicken Biryani, The Highway Chicken Karahi, the lamb kebabs, the chicken Bihari kebabs, chicken Tikka and the beef Seekh kebabs. Although the food looked good, it wasn't quite up to the mark. The chicken biryani was dry and had too much essence in it, the chicken Tikka was dry. The chicken Karahi and the lamb kebabs by far were their best dishes. Honestly though for $228, we felt the food was overpriced and the quality of the food, fell well short of our expectations. Overall, we give Bandoo Khan a 3 out of 5 stars. It is a one time for us. There are better options out there with better prices.
