It's a typical sidewalk place where we can drop in for a quick bite. The lunch options are quite good on the pocket and I kind of liked the South Indian menu, but so I thought. I generally order the masala dosa here and I must admit that it's a good one overall. But but but one day out of the blue I ordered Puri with curry. This place is pretty good. This was only my second time eating South Indian food and I was pleased. I could be convinced to eat more South Indian food! We got a lot of dosas. Overall I thought they were tasty. I wasn't a huge fan of the cheese one. The cheese one tasted way too american for my liking. I did like the palak one and the masala one. Those seemed more like curries stuffed in a dosa. There was this yellow rice with tomatoes and I really liked this one. There was a nice toasty element to the dish. I will get this next time. Have been here for the first time,I would never recommend this place. Very bad service, bad food, arrogant staff and unhygienic silverware and tAble. We ordered rasam vada, dosa, masala idly and tomato soup. Me being a good cook myself I can easily say that tomato soup was made from the ready made packs we get in store. Let me start off with saying that I typically love eating at Udapi Palace. The dosas and customer service are always on point! .....BUT today I had a bad experience. When we sat down at our table, the server brought out two menus. One was for their regular dining menu and the other was for their lunch menu for the day. We each decided to do the "All you can eat" for $20 each. The server said ok but reminded us that "you cannot share" with the "All you can eat" and we told him that's not a problem since we're both doing the "All you can eat" We each ordered 2 dosas and 1 Uthapam. And then when we got the bill, we had been charged individual entree prices. We explained to the uncle who brought the bill that that is incorrect and that we should be paying for the all you can eat rate, $20/person. The uncle said that they don't do "All you can eat" on weekends. They brought out the server who then argued with me saying that he repeated back to us what we ordered, and that they don't do " All you can eat" on weekends. I was pissed, because this server absolutely knew that we were doing the "All you can eat" special because we each told him individually that what we were doing it AND the he also made it a point to remind us that we couldn't share!!! Not once did he tell us we couldn't do "All you can eat" . Also I snapped a picture of the menu (because I knew I would be ordering more than one dosa)---nowhere does it say that this special is only limited to the weekdays. After arguing about this, the Uncle changed the bill to reflect the correct charge, we paid and left. But the experience left us with a bad taste Take home message.....this is usually a great place to eat great dosas, and customer service is usually great. Udupi is much better than many of these reviewers are saying and I have no idea what they are talking about. Their uttapam and and dosa are both good and comparable to places in DC and SF although yes they don't have exciting pickle or chutney. The malai kofta are about as good as the dish can get. You really cannot go wrong with Udupi. It's great food, great service and low key ambience. The hospitality of this place is very courteous - the older gentlemen who work here every time I have visited have always welcomed everyone who walks in as if they are inviting their house guest. It's actually rare to find that kind of warmth nowadays. And the service throughout your visit is on point. Order on time, food arrives on time and everything is straightforward from the moment you enter to the moment you leave. The feel of the place is slightly old school but in the best possible way. The place can accommodate 1 person to a large party. There aren't any embellishments or anything extra in terms of decor. You get what you see. The same applies too their food. The food is fresh, tasty and light on your tummy. P.S - I particularly love their lemon rice. It's light, great flavor and lemony without it being tangy. read more

It's hard to figure this place out - I've been here so many times now but still haven't decided whether I like it or not. I used to prefer Mysore Woodlands across the street but last fall their chef left and their new chef is not as good. So Udupi became alternative by default but I don't regret it. Not my favorite but pretty decent. Their curd rice et al is not so good. But just for dosa and uttappam - they don't disappoint if you don't expect much. Chicagoans, do you know how lucky you are to have so many options for good South Indian food?! Udupi Palace was the last stop on my Chicago food tour, which was a good thing because I practically had to be rolled out of the restaurant. I love Indian food, but I'm used to Bangladeshi and North Indian cuisine; dosa and sambar are new to me. I still like my plate to be heaped high with fragrant basmati rice and my curry of choice, but I fell in love with some of these amazing South Indian dishes. The highlight of the meal for me was the bowl of mini-iddly. I understand that these are typically larger and steamed, but at Udupi, they were little and crispy on the outside. I cannot emphasize how good they were. I can sit and just consume an entire vat of these, one crispy delicious piece at a time. I also loved the dosa - a big crepe-like thing, possibly folded over stuffing (we picked a potato stuffing). We ended up ordering the dosa and all three of the special combo meals. It was a lot of food. The only thing I was disappointed by was the tea. I typically love tea at Indian restaurants because of the cardamom flavor. Here, they added milk but it was really strong and had an oily sheen on top (ew). I abandoned mine after one sip. Service was perfunctory, but that's okay. We ordered these dishes: Floating sambar idly - ok, not good. looks like idly was fried before adding to sambar, wish it wasn't. Initially we thought sambar vada mistakenly delivered to our table. But then realized its not as medhu vadu came in. Medhu vadai - ok, below normal standard. It was not at all crispy and didnt taste fermented. Onion rava dosa - again very decent, didn't taste good. We felt it was missing something overall, worst onion rava dosa ever. Mysore masala dosa - among all the dishes we ordered this one was atleast eatable, but again it was decent. We requested for masala to be separate, but apparently it was put inside which was very disappointing. Tea - ok Wouldn't recommend this place. Good food at very reasonable prices but the service was lackluster. I think things were a little disorganized and nobody was assigned our table. I had the bhaigan bharta curry which is a pureed eggplant dish. It was tasty and came with FREE rice woo hoo! My entree at Indian Garden across the street, which cost more, didn't include rice. I followed the waiters recommendation and ended up with $8 rice (came with 20 peas and a couple of specks of saffron). But, I digress. . .My GF ordered the paper masala dosai. It's about the size of a rolled up Tribune (daily not Sunday!). Looked very impressive hanging off the end of the plate and she liked the taste, too. We also had the appetizer combo of idly, a rice and lentil patty and dahi voda, a lentil donut. They were just okay to me. For South Indian, I still like Mysore Woodlands slightly better, but Udupi was pretty good. Our party of five was seated and served quickly. We had repeated language difficulty with our server getting our order wrong, but that was quickly rectified. My Mysore Masala Dosai was very good but not as spicy as advertised, which was slightly disappointing. Our chai was excellent, very very good. The restaurant has a somewhat more sophisticated decor and atmosphere than Mysore Woodlands. Both of these restaurants are good choices for Indian. I would have to eat there more often to make a final decision which is better South Indian. read more

I was with some guests from Delhi tonight - in fact they've been here since Sunday, but tonight was dinner host night. "We haven't had Indian food for three days!", he said. So I looked up good spots on Yelp. And it didn't let me down. One reviewer said, "Not as good as Devon Ave.", I looked up restaurants in that area. I wanted to go to Mysore Woodlands (named after an area in southern India). But as soon as we got to Devons Ave. we asked some locals and they said to try this spot. For $15 we ordered the Royal Thali which was three-courses of glorious vegetarian food. Too much. I added mango lassi. Too much ;-) The service isn't the best and they add 15% service for parties of 5+, but it was worth the 11 miles drive from our hotel downtown. I think my guests were impressed that we took them to this place as they'd checked with the concierge about Indian food places and he said "Devon Ave. but it's far..." read more

Got food to go form this place was okay. Service was terrible, got the rasa vada- its rasam soup with medu vada. Asked for them to be separated since it was a to go order and didn't want the vada to soak up the rasam I was told it's an extra charge. I was confused as to why? The guy in the phone didn't give me a clear answer, instead got rude and said I'll do it this time but it's extra next time. I just wanted to know why? It's the same dish just packed separately I could understand a .50 cent upcharge for extra to go container but no he said I had to order it separately which would come out to be way too much. I'm just upset at the poor service as this is a good place for dosa when not in the burbs but for them to treat me like this is kinda sad. What I asked for is a normal thing in India btw when you get this dish to go they them self's pack it separately. Don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. read more

As a Cincinnati resident, I'm pretty familiar with Northern Indian/Punjabi food, because our town has what seems like a couple of dozen restaurants serving that stuff, and I love it. But I barely know jack about Southern Indian food, except that I had had it a couple of times, including an amazing veggie buffet in Houston that mixed up North & South, and what I had had I thought was really good. So we trekked up to Devon Avenue to give ourselves a vegetarian Southern-Indian crash course for Sunday lunch. Based on Yelp reviews, we chose Udupi Palace, and since there were only two of us ignorant folks, we ordered a couple of combo lunch platters so we could sample a good chunk of the menu. The Indians among you, as well as those who are familiar with this fare, can chuckle to yourselves at my (mis)description(s) of this meal: The medhu vada (fried lentil donuts) was tasty, and the masala dosa (a giant crepe filled with potato and onion) was even better. The bright-and-fresh coriander (?) chutney that accopmanied them was something special as well. But the thali special as something else again: a circle of ramekins filled with curries, soups, chutneys, raita, and more. Just a frickin' symphony of flavors, several of which I was unfamiliar with but almost all of which were delicious and all of which seemed to complement and enhance one another. We also ordered the aloo bonda, which was very similar to, but better than, just about any samosa I've ever had. (Or maybe aloo bonda IS a samosa?) Mango lassi was refreshing and tasty on a hot day. If I'd been physcially capable of going directly across the street to Mysore Woodlands and gorging myself on a second lunch, I'd have done so, because it'll probably be a long time before I get to have this food again. As it was, we had to take some time to walk off this massive meal checking out the shops along Devon Avenue. The prices are quite reasonable and the restaurant is slick and clean, if not very interesting looking. Based on our one experience, Udupi Palace's food was pretty close to five stars, though I have little in my eating background to compare it to. Only reason to ratchet it down a notch is that the service was a little gruff, which seems to be a common complaint in these reviews. But as I'm not one to bitch and moan too much about such service, as long as it's competent (and this was), I highly recommend this place. I am truly disappointed with our lunch for the four of us on Sunday June 3, 2018. My brother and sister in law were visiting from out of state so I thought it would be great to treat them at an authentic veg restaurant and we drove to Udupi Palace on Devon Ave. We have been going there for over 30 years but our lunch was a total miss - even when we pointed to the manager that our food tasted bad and some dishes were under cooked, their reaction was "no reaction". That's really disappointing! I am hoping that after 12 hours that bad food will be history (my wife is already throwing up, no kidding!) as our bodies will take care of it! I generally avoid Devon food but this was probably the last time I took guests there, particularly to this restaurant. read more

This place is so good. Order ANYTHING and it will be good. Sometimes it was so spicy I had to get up and walk around the room to cool off. Now that I'm in Seattle I am considering making a special trip in the next three years just to eat this food again. This place was ok at best. I got a mysore masala dosa and the masala was very bland and did not have much spice to it. Also, the sambar was watery and not flavorful. I also ordered a masala chai which was just a normal chai and lacked any spices to warrant being a "masala chai." I think their store in the suburbs was a lot better than this one. read more

After coming for a second time, they are well deserving in my books of a 5 star restaurant. Comparatively to others of its range and type. I love it here, and come to the Devon area often so I can say with experience that Udupi is great. I would like to review the others on the Devon strip but I'll start with this one. I lived in India for 3 months and learned some good dishes and how they taste in the real place vs America. Udupi gives you the best of both worlds I'd say. My first time I ran here, and after about 13 miles I made it. The servers were immediately bringing me pitchers of water and welcomed me a ton. Like almost too much. "Sir please sit", "Please have water" Ha. This took me back to my time spent in India though.. I got Dosa and Thali. Thali is tough to find in the city when you aren't on Devon. The dosa was the real deal, same quality as actual India. Each Thali dish was awesome. I inhaled that food, and took another Dosa to go. Visit 2 was more traditionally take-out style. We got paper masala Dosa, Matar Paneer, Daal Mahkala, and some naan. Same type of service. They knew who I was walking in, and the manager/owner even waited on the street for me to come in when I had to move my car. Over the top but this is just them trying extra hard. Their Dosa here is my favorite in town. The Matar Paneer is amazing as well. Naan is naan, good stuff, fluffy and up to standards I expect. The Daal mahkala was good, but I may skip next time. I also recommend the chaat, or pakoras (if I go back I'm doing more of those). This is a really special place. Check it out, be open to new dishes, and take it all in. read more

Personally, I thought the food was a 3 but I feel that it's not due to low quality or a bad chef; I just don't do well with Indian food. For some reason, the flavors just don't resonate too well with my taste buds which are usually very interested in trying new and exciting foods. Regardless, the restaurant is very nice, the food was good (more-so than any other Indian food I've had), and the staff was fairly polite. I think they can work on their American pleasantries a bit more but overall, I can't really complain about anything. If unlike me, you enjoy Indian food, I'd definitely give this place a go. ooooh! A trip to Devon, the little Indo-Pak of Illinois would not be complete for hubby without having his fair share of south indian food at one of the many restaurants out here. Super famished and hungry we walked into Udupi Palace to gorge on some Idly and Dosa. The Mini Idly - soft idlies, spicy & tangy sambhar with coconut chutney was a good way to start off. Equally good was the Rava Masala Dosa which we ordered based on our waiters recommendation. Crispy, soft and lacey dosas... Gently spiced potato masala... Wish we had space for one more :) To finish our meal we ordered the Mysore Coffee which was good but nothing great. All in all a totally enjoyable meal. read more

Id heard a lot of negatives about the place but still wanted to try it out because the name "Udupi" is a brand and I'm a die hard fan of the food. However the ambiance is decent but the waiters aren't too prompt..even with a thin crowd. (i wonder why there was such a thin crowd on a Sunday afternoon??) We ordered the standard thali and though limited one at @11 it was quite a lot of food one can possibly eat. I obseved the paper dosa served was prettyyyy looong!.. looked yum Good: The cauliflower/Spinach palya (veggie) was awesome! I credited the owner for the sabzi and he got so happy he get me another bowl of it. That's good customer service. Rasam, Pulav, Dal were also very well made. Sambar was bit spicy though Bad: The semia payasa (kheer) was less of that and more of luke warm badam milk with bits of vermicelli floating. i cud make much better :) A let down. Overall a very warm friendly place but with lots of room for improvement. hence 1 star less. A must visit for all veggie food lovers. read more
