The past 5 times I have come in here there was nobody working on the floor. I would have appreciated if there was someone around to help me and answer my questions since I don't know much about the products. This store has constant turnover of stylists and salespeople, and most of them are ill-suited for dealing with the public. The employees have a knack for making your uncomfortable or not being helpful at all. I had an appointment with a stylist, who quit suddenly, and they never even informed me that my appointment was cancelled, didn't offer to schedule with anyone else, they didn't even call to tell me not to come in. The sample products are often dried out, missing or dirty and they are constantly out of stock of more popular products. Last straw was I got a bad product, and they claim they can't find my purchase in my account, and won't exchange it thought it was clearly a defective product. As much as I hate driving to San Jose, it's worth it to not have to go in this Ulta. read more

I'm done shopping at this Ulta location! I was excited for this location opening because Ulta carries brands that I usually drive over the hill to buy at Sephora. However the staff at this location is an utter let down and I will not be back! I have only shopped at this location a few times because I have had a negative experience every time. I kept returning hoping to see change and better service, but sadly things never changed. I'm never greeted or offered help, and I'm always shocked at how empty the shelves are (does anybody ever restock?). Items are unorganized and messy and I never see an associate addressing the mess. I have also seen multiple opened products and discarded product packaging. Today was the last time I will ever shop at this location. For starters, I was not greeted or offered help, again. And the product I was looking for was in an area of the store that had nothing to do with it. When I located the item, I was interrupted by an associate only to interject with a completely irrelevant comment telling me that the item I was looking at was NOT on sale and that the item was at this location because there was no room for it at it's designated store area ( which doesn't make sense because all the shelves are always empty). If this associate was properly trained she would have informed me that the item I was interested in was on promotion and that I'd be saving about $30. Paying for the item was another nightmare. There was only one cashier with a long line of customers who seemed confused and uninformed when I inquired about a coupon. It seemed that she was more concerned about getting rid of the line of customers then taking the time to answer my question or pass me off to an associate that may know the answer. And lastly, on our way out, a sales associate very rudely cut my mother and I off while we were heading to the back door, and wasn't even aware of what she had done. The first time I shopped at this location I sought product information form an employee, she preceded to read the description from the box to me, something I could have done my self, she was useless in answering my question. I can't stress how much customer service affects sales and frankly I will now prefer to patronize stores where I know I will receive quality customer service from well trained associates. Adrian the fragrance specialist is literally the biggest help and best sales associate. He's so knowledgable about fragrances it's insane. Name a category of scent that you like (floral, fresh, fruity, etc.) and he will name a specific scent/brand off the top of his head. I took my 17 year old daughter there for a makeup application before COVID. She specified that she wanted to learn how to make her eyes look bigger and specifically asked about getting a smokey eye. The makeup artist spent a ridiculous amount of time putting on layers and layers of foundation (primer, foundation, powder, setting powder) even though my daughter had flawless skin. We questioned her about it and she said, "Everyone does this". She included some brownish countouring cream on parts of the face, but it was dark enough so that my daughter's skin looked smeared with dirt. At the end of the makeup session, she did some sloppy liquid eyeliner lines, including along the lower waterline, right around the eye. It's exactly what you are not supposed to do to make eyes look bigger. It looked like something off of a what not to do video. We tried to offer a course correction to her, but she was adamant that she was right. My daughter made it out of the store before she started sobbing. It was a terrible experience. read more

I think the overall ratings here speak for themselves. The store itself is okay for buying products, BUT DO NOT GO TO THE SALON. ESPECIALLY VANESSA. She completely ruined my hair, was rude the whole time, would not agree to re do it or at least give me a percentage of my money back. She has no idea what's she's doing and try's to act cocky to make up for it. It's worth spending the additional 30 dollars to go to an better salon. I've had a few decent ones, but the most recent hair cut I had here was a little disappointing. I asked the stylist to cut off the split ends and it seemed like she just trimmed it a half-inch to an inch. It had been almost a year (and quite a few hair colorings) since my last cut, so it was pretty badly damaged. I know, partly my fault also since I was in a rush, but I don't think checking to make sure you're doing what was requested of you is too much to ask. On the cosmetics side of things, I appreciate having more options for mid-range cosmetics line in town, instead of just the department stores. It can get frustrating when they have things out of stock for long periods of time, particularly when I'm making a trip out of my way to go there. I stopped in four different days over the span of nearly two weeks to pick up a foundation and the display was continually empty for that shade. I ended up going to the CVS across the street. The staff is friendly and tends to leave you well enough alone once they check on you (which I like; I'm sure others feel differently). read more

This is a review for the salon of the store. I had an appointment today and when I showed up there was a classy sharpie written sign that said they are closed for the day. You didn't think to call any of the appointments today to let them know? The professional thing to do on management's part would have been to do this. This way I wouldn't have to drive across town from the westside thinking I was going to be getting a nice new haircut today. I was taking a chance anyway by scheduling with a new stylist as my favorite stylist has left from there. Asked several times at checkout about giving my account # to acquire those points, to which they repeatedly responded passively & incorrectly reminding me the points could not be used for this purchase, which I knew and hadn't asked. Wish there were 0 stars. Came here to the salon to get my hair done and literally have never been more disappointed. Not only was Venessa, the stylist, rude to me from the moment i sat down, but she made my hair DARKER when i asked for it to be lighter. How this could even happen? One may never know. Spoke with the store manager who didn't do anything. Didn't get a refund, gift card, or even discount towards my purchase. Went to a new salon the next day to be rescued and ended up loving my hair from there. Steer clear of this salon by all means. They have no skills or customer service what so ever. Update:my love affair with Ulta is coming to an end, sadly. I was quoted $26 for a trim & ended up getting charged $65 for a haircut. That's really unethical. Add the quote for having my roots done for $40 & being charged another $60 & I walked out in total shock. I mentioned it to the manager who just shrugged it off. The quality of this store overall has been on a steady decline ever since it opened. When it first opened, the customer service and store in general were great, but nowadays it's one of the least pleasant places to shop at in the mall. The customer service is terrible. I can't remember the last time I went into this Ulta and was greeted or asked by an employee if I needed help with anything. And when I do need help, I can't ever seem to find anyone to assist me. The product is just as much of a nightmare. Most items seem as though they never get restocked, shelves are always empty, and what little products are there have mostly been opened and destroyed already. I can't seem to understand why despite the current state of this store, none of the employees seem to care about how it looks or do anything to fix it, as it never seems to get any better no matter how many times I go in. OH MY GOD WHAT A NIGHTMARE. I went in to change my all over blonde to a dark blonde to light blonde ombré. What I ended up with was splotchy, unblended dark brown on my roots and an immediate transition to my blonde-- no blending whatsoever. On top of all that, I started to notice that bits of the brown dye had been splotched through my ends, like... SPOTS. Everyone was looking at me like, "how her hair is bad." It was mortifying. I complained to the manager obviously and she offered to have someone else fix it or to not charge me. One nice sales person who I won't name took me aside and gave me a note for someone at another salon to fix my hair. I have an appointment at urban groove tomorrow... I don't why I didn't go there I'm the first place. I am NEVER going back to ulta for anything ever again, most of the girls seemed pretty snarky, too. I had Anna, nice girl... I walked in to get my pixie-cut trimmed, which was creeping in to the mullet stage, but the appointment ended up being a wash-cut-blow out. The associate Dianne did an amazing job, and she asked a lot of questions about what I wanted as well as elaborated on what it was she was doing (clippers v. horizontal snips, etc.). She was great ! I came out after the color was in and my hair was DARK BROWN! Went to Ulta today to purchase my face make up. There was only one left of the color that I use. I opened the box to make sure it was indeed the color that it said on the box. When I opened the box I noticed that the make up itself was dirty and felt like it was half used up. I unscrewed the cap to see if it was sealed with the foil tip which indicates that it is new, and it was definitely used!!!! DISGUSTING!!! So I went to the counter to let them know and I asked if they could order one for me because my color was sold out. I was told that they do not make "special orders" even though this was clearly not a special order but just for them to restock their shelves. And then the girl at the counter said that I could buy the dirty used make up for 10% off!!! DISGUSTING!!! Clearly they do not get what customer service is really about. She is so knowledgable and professional, I wish I would have taken before and after photos of my skin cause she worked magic. Was one star, giving 2 stars for some of the things they have and because I really like the hair stylist ricky or rick am sorry, he's the one with the short red hair and tattoos on his arm. he was a nice understanding guy. but when i called back on Saturday 2/6/2017 to get the price again before coming in again to make sure i have enough before coming in. but the person that picked up was ridiculously rude when he answered the phone as he says the stores name and got really mad at me for some reason and i have read some reviews with similar phone calls here as well they really need to get nicer or get different people working here. The manager Courtney tried to add on ten bucks for "thermal" because the stylist touched up my hair with the straightener after I had an all over color. She actually came and took my ticket while I was shopping. The stylist apologized but IMO it wasn't her fault that the manager was trying to nickel and dime me for a service that I've always gotten as part of my service it was just a quick smoothing of the top. The odd thing was that right when I was finishing she interrupted us to have the stylist demo a flat iron to another customer, did they try charge her ten bucks too? I had to adamantly refuse to pay and call corporate for the wtf "thermal" charge and she took it off the bill, begrudgingly. Left me feeling uninterested in ever shopping there again. I really liked the stylist, Janessa, she did a great color and cut so I hope she finds a better salon because I won't be returning to Ulta. read more

Ulta has all the potential to be a great beauty store that carries both drugstore and higher end brands. But this particular location of Ulta leaves a lot to be desired. The cosmetic mirror stations lack any makeup remover, tissue, nor cotton pads. So, when you sample makeup colors were is no way to wipe them off your hands. Instead, you end up wandering around looking for some assistance (which you never find) while trying to not get makeup on your sleeves, purse, etc. It would take very little to stock the mirror stations with tissue and makeup remover and would encourage sampling and subsequent purchases. In addition, the shelves are poorly stocked and very dirty. During my last visit I was unable to purchase 4 out of 5 items, due to them being out of stock. And there is makeup smeared on many of the samples, shelves, and displays. The service, which is mainly found behind the registers, is variable; ranging from friendly to remarkably unprofessional. I have been to other Ulta locations that were far better managed and whoever is running the Capitola store is failing miserably. read more

please don't shop at the capitola mall ulta. you walk in and associates don't greet when you first walk in like in other stores. you are never asked if you need help finding a product and when you walk up to the registers asking for help there is always two associates doing nothing. by the way i was there on a wednesday, i approached one of them asking if they had a product in stock, she responded back to me and said i'm off while the other one in the purple hair stared at me like if i was some type of a weird specie by the way beautiful hair but wowwww what an attitude. she rolled her eyes at me and said if you don't see it where it should be we are totally out we should receive them tomorrow when we get a new shipment. i walked out of the store empty handed. i noticed it was almost closing time so i had to go back to ulta to grab something similar of what i needed. i walked in for a second time not greeted once more two associates were standing by the registers including the purple hair lady none said a word when i walked by instead they laughed, were they laughing at me or with me hmmmmm??? i walked to the displays and magically some how the person who said was off was putting up the items i needed. "wow they received their shipment that fast impressing". i grabbed my items walked up to the registers and ms. purple hair helped me i asked for other items and prices while i paid she gave me an attitude againnnnn. i decided not to ask any more questions she bagged my items and kinda threw them at me. i have no other option then i guess learn to deal with this type of situations every time i walk into ulta. sadly it is my nearest i know there is more over the hill, but i only drive down every 2 months. shopping online is not an option for me unless i've purchased that item before. i know i'm not the only one who has had the same experience with that particular employee i've heard from others who had a similar experience, so if i'm not asking for much i suggest ulta to please hire well trained people who are particularly helpful and frendlyyyy =) . read more

So, I always go to Ulta to restock on my makeup and find new makeup to try and I've always loved it. However, I went to a makeup class recently at Ulta that was run through Urban Decay and I was very disappointed. My friend and I each purchased an $85 gift card that was needed in order to sign up for the class. They told us that we could use this gift card or anything we wanted. On the day of the class, the Urban Decay makeup specialists showed us three different bags that come with samples: the first one was free for attending the class, the second one was if you spent $175, and the last one was if you spent $225. At the end of the class, they already ran out of all the products that I wanted to buy so I was just going to order them online later. However, one of the workers came up to my friend and I and told us that we each had to buy three items from Urban Decay for attending the class. My friend and I didn't know this until that moment and had to scramble to find three of the cheapest items (which is about $20 each) in order to leave. When we went to pay, I asked about the free makeup bag and samples and after the transaction was complete the cashier told me that I had to spend $85 in order to get it. First of all, the Urban Decay specialists told us it was free in the beginning of the class and the Ulta workers never said that we had to buy a bunch of expensive Urban Decay products in order to attend the class, otherwise I would not have attended. They used a bait-and-switch advertising technique and I'm mad that I walked away without the top three items that I wanted and that I had to spend all of my money. read more
