The staff here is beyond nice. I'm an older person who just rides for recreation, while this place definitely can help the very serious rider, they treated me just like I was one too. I didn't know what my bikes needed, just wanted them looked at to make sure they were safe ( they never really have been serviced ). Turns out they just needed minor adjustments and lubricating. The staff jumped right on it and were done in less than 15 minutes. I asked what I owed them and they said "no charge!" ...What???? Several weeks ago I came in with a need for a large ring for my Specialized Allez. Mike told me he could order on and that it would be in within several days. In the meantime, he indicated he had a used ring that would probably work. I offered to pay for it but he refused to accept payment for it saying he'd throw it out anyway. I walked in to find some new grips for my mtn bike. I was greeted by a friendly staff member who showed me where they were. He explained a little about the differences in their selection, and made some pleasant small talk about MN/WI since I just moved down in April. He had another customer ask him about some bike options and excused himself to help him. While I was admiring some of the full suspension bikes another staff member asked if I needed any help. I found some sale items and one of them was a sweet set of grips. He said it's all 50% off. I was more than happy to get a $30 set of locking grips for $15. I asked how much to swap a set of petals for me, and he said no charge, and offered to swap out the grips quick while they were at it. Pleasant experiences like this make me a loyal patron. Cool place with a good selection of mountain/road bikes. Also good for maintenance and tune ups it looks like - the staff knows there stuff. I'm still "dipping" my feet in the water as far as cycling goes, but I've gotten some socks from here and will stick with my cycle classes for now before plunging head first and buying a bike. I think any specialty bike store tends to be expensive, but you do get a quality bike and some sound advice if you are just starting out. read more

This place exceeded all expectations. I searched around for over a month at various bike shops in Charlotte while deciding what brand/type of bike I wanted. This was the first place I visited and after searching around, the last place I visited. All staff was extremely helpful and honest. No run-around, just facts and straight-up answers. Very thankful for that. It took a while for me to make the purchase of a bike for what they cost, but after searching all Trek dealers in Charlotte, prices at Ultimate Bicycle were the least expensive by over $40, including Trek's main website. The Trek DS2 has been the perfect bicycle for road/gravel paths. I ride it all the time through McAlpine Greenway's wooded trails with ease, and fly through the neighborhood streets as well. Most importantly, they take care of you after your purchase, which is hard to put a price on. I took the bike in for my free, 45 day post-purchase tune-up this past weekend and it rides even better than the day I purchased it! Extremely quick turn around as well. Went to grab lunch, came back and it was ready. Can't say thank you enough to the team there. What's even better, they will work on any bike, so if you have an old ride in the shed, bring it in and they have it rolling like new. What a great experience. Came with my daughter to get sized and then returned later to buy the bike as a gift. Someone took the training wheels off and tightened all the important components. Would definitely recommend this shop to anyone (novice or expert). The only thing I noticed was that the white handle was dirty and greasy from the techs working on the bike. For a $200.00 bike I would have preferred the bike to be 100% clean but understood why it got dirty just something to note. read more

My son was having issues with his thru-axles on his MTB. After describing the problem to Kyle, he immediately began to work on the bike. He corrected the issue in 10 minutes! When asked how much do we owe you, he said "don't worry about it"!!! I was so grateful since my son was going on a mountain bike trip with a friend for the entire week. It gets BETTER! When my 9 year-old needed a new bike, I didn't hesitate to bring him here after having bikes serviced here in the past. We walked in, and within 5 minutes, a great sales person pulled out a bike and had my son up and test driving it in the parking lot. We bought his bike as well as a helmet and riding gloves, which we got 10% off with the purchase of our bike. We were ecstatic with the service and the bike. We will be purchasing all of our future bikes at Ultimate! This is heads and tails above the awful service I've gotten at the bike shop up at Park Road Shopping Center. In fact, we started there, but after waiting 30 minutes without so much as a single sales person acknowledge that we were there, let alone asking if we needed any help, we left and swore to never return. Apparently that store had no interest in selling children's bikes. Now, Ultimate's bikes are a little more than you'll spend at a typical big box retailer, but you get what you pay for in the way of excellent sales advice, service and product selection. read more

I called the store this afternoon and one of the employees answered the phone! That was different from other stores. I asked if they could install new bar tape today. It was no problem. I brought the bike in and was assisted with selecting the tape. I was told that it would take an hour or so because they had to take care of other customers. Wow...My bike chains and gears were all locked up. I was afraid that the whole gear system would have to be replaced. Their bike repair expert replaced some cables and he took the time to do some fine-tuning and straighten out both of the wheels. He did it all within 20 minutes while I waited, and he only charged me a price less than a car oil change. Excellent, honest, service! read more

These guys are doing a fantastic job helping customers shop safely and confidently during our current situation in North Carolina. Fantastic bike shop. The staff is beyond helpful. I trust them to steer me in the direction purchasing a bike that is best for me and not just their bottom line. During my first two visits since moving to town they treated me like I had been a customer for years. I purchased a used 2004 Cannondale mountain bike on Craigslist and brought it to the shop. They easily could have done repairs and sold me tires and a new set of forks, all of which I thought I needed, but instead made a few tweaks that made the tune up/repairs unnecessary without even charging me. They even replaced a damaged rear derailleur sprocket. They gave me guidance on what pressure my shocks and tires should be at and explained that I really didn't need new ones yet. It gets better though. They also took the time to show me how to position myself during climbs and gave me other technique advice. My next trip to Sherman Branch I conquered a small rock garden I couldn't handle before, and climbed areas I was previously unable to do with confidence. I brought my bike there twice for annual maintenance so when I was seeking a rack for the top of my car to haul my kayak around, I went to them for help. My last review was based on the poor customer service and not so good repair job done by the repair shop. I cannot speak on the quality of the bicycles. However the repair person told me I needed new bearings and this is why it was making a squeaking noise I never heard before. He also told me I needed a new shifter which I replaced. He said I would be needing to replace the other shifter. Total cost will be well over $200.00 in addition to the 200 I had just paid. I took the bike to another shop and they just cleaned the bearings (no more noise). They replaced the cable for the shifter and replaced the handlebar tape. All for less than $50.00. Stay far away from this place. read more

If you live in Matthews, or thereabouts, and you want a bike shop with talented and knowledgeable bike techs close to home, then this is the place for you. My first experience with them was with my first mountain bike that I'd bought from a big box sporting goods store in Matthews. Anyhow, the sporting goods store tried to tell me I needed a whole new crank set which would've been an expensive endeavor. On recommendation from my neighbor, I took my mountain bike to Ultimate Bicycle for a second opinion. The dudes at Ultimate bike concluded that only my bearings needed to be replaced, and they fixed my bike for a fraction of the cost of what the sporting goods store wanted to charge me. So yeah, a little honesty goes a long way, and I've been a loyal customer ever since. Also, one of my biggest pet peeves about bike shops is that they're prone to bike snobbery, but not at Ultimate Bicycle. Nothing but nice down to earth folks working here. So yes, this is a great place to go to purchase a bike, but even if you didn't get your bike here, this is definitely the place to take it for a repair. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, that unlike those big box sporting goods stores that ALWAYS ask you to leave your bike with them for a few days, and even weeks, the dudes at Ultimate Bicycle will usually have you up and running the same day, or even while you wait--if they have the part in stock. This store has a lot of things that could be better but Customer service and honesty is good so I gave them three stars. I think their focus is in the new bike and mechanic/repair aspects more than selling parts and accessories. They have a lot of bikes. The staff is experienced and shoots straight. I can tell this is the place to go if you need help finding a bike and getting fitted or lots of advice. On the down side, the store feels overly spacious and feels under-stocked in parts and accessories. Parts aren't organized well. The different types of accessories are placed in odd locations with no signs or visual queues, to make it obvious where things are. For such a big store, the selection is limited, esp colors. Parts and accessories seem to be very functional and practical and there isn't much variation in styles. This is in contrast to smaller stores that surpass them in this area. The biggest problem I have are the prices. I like supporting small local businesses. Naturally the internet is cheaper. But the markup is astronomical even compared to other local shops. read more
