So I can't comment on how the prices are compared to other places. Alls I know is, the bike prices are too steep for my pockets; however, if I were rolling in dough, I'd more than likely purchase from this place based on the customer service and knowledge of bikes/service and the options. Prices of course are pretty steep right now, more than likely everywhere given the current climate. I was actually pretty close to purchasing a bike from here. I even put a down payment on a bike. It was really pretty and extremely comfortable. The ride was smooth and the breaks were top notch. I didn't really get to try the gears. I wish I could remember the lady's name that helped me; but she was really patient with me. She was extremely knowledgeable and just overall nice. She let me take the bike for a spin and recommended a route to take. It was such a beautiful day, I couldn't resist. She only required my license to take it out. For my needs, mainly riding on the road, but the possibility of riding on some gravel, etc; she recommended a hybrid. It's been years since I've been on a bike, so I like how she schooled me on how it should feel, the fact that I should basically be on my tip toes. The price was $800 and I put down $100; however, my dude wasn't too happy with the price. When I called they refunded the money immediately. I found another bike, that is supposedly better elsewhere for $150 less. If I ever have any other needs I'll definitely consider coming back to this joint. read more

I came into Uptown Cycles in the middle of my bike ride because I noticed I was having a few minor issues. I walked in and was greeted by a really nice guy who pointed me in the direction of Matt, their bike mechanic. Even though he was working on something he still took the time to talk to me about it. After I explained my situation he without hesitation began to fix it. On top of that he went out of his way to make sure I didn't have to pay for anything I didn't need. As I mentioned, I didn't need a lot done, however the fact he explained it to me, gave me tips on how to prevent it in the future, and was just overall the best person I could've gone to for what was needed. The store owner also let me know it has been around for 14 years. Highly recommend this entire store, I could tell without asking that it was truly a family run business. I've been shopping around for a new bike for my hubby and a place to fix up my old one, and we stopped in at Uptown on a Monday night. There were about 7 people trying out bikes on the stationary tracks; I almost thought we'd interrupted a class. The clerk let us browse around and came over to offer assistance a few moments later. He was super knowledgeable, which was great because we have some requirements that make the majority of modern bikes a non-option. We left with his card, a catalogue, and a clearer idea of our bike options. Plus, their prices are more affordable than other places we've been around town, and their bikes have the cutest ice cream paint jobs I've ever seen! I stopped in at Uptown Cycles and was greeted the second I opened the door. Literally. My eyes hadn't even adjusted from the sunlight! The location was spacious and very well organized. Two people offered to help me right away. As I was talking about my general wants, one guy came up to me and immediately started adjusting my brake positioning. Seriously. How awesome is that? After I had gotten a few sentences out, the gal behind the counter asks the guy to take a look at my gears in the back (issues getting a last click to shift into third) while she gets me started on inventory (shopping!) up front. Girl-to-girl, she knew how important the ponytail space is when it comes to a new helmet, and even took extra time to find me colors that would match my bike--on her own, I didn't ask or anything! (Although, I would have after I found one, if she hadn't...) I was pleased that she started me in the budget section, and we made our way up from there until I found the right fit. So much better than finding you like something and then finding out that no-way-am-i-paying-that-much-for-something-i-hope-i-never-ever-ever-need. Don't get me wrong, I need my head, but there are limits! My mid-range choice was $110 with this stunning turquoise green on a sliver-and-white background. And plenty of hair-do freedom. The one thing I felt like I got a bit of pressure on was getting a rear light. I wanted to look online for something, as my baby girl has a weird rump and I never remember to take my lights with me. I wanted something that could fit the way I wanted, to the location I wanted, and not be easily removed. (I don't do a lot of night riding so waiting a couple of weeks would not have been a problem, I don't think...) Instead I ended up buying two USB rechargeable lights (one front, one back) for $35 that absolutely cannot be permanently affixed to my darling angel's big boxy booty or handlebars. She really did ply on the pressure about safety and even using the light when riding in daylight (come on, who does that, really?) and I caved. But they came in white (and blue and black and red and...) and look like a matching set made for my lovely lady, so I guess we're fashionable now? My worry is that the band won't last very long due to weather conditions and my inability to remember to remove the lights--or worse that they'll get stolen. Although, it is possible the plastic on the light will snap before the band loses its elasticity. Ahhh, the anxiety begins! For $17-something each, I guess it was still a pretty good deal if it lasts me half a year. I did have to go back in after a few minutes of circling the park--now first gear wasn't popping in. The dude graciously adjusted my junk for me, even filling my tires and test-riding it himself to ensure that things were working not just on the lifted repair rack fantasy road. He explained what I could do while riding to help with the changing process given my issues although I sensed he was thinking I should just upgrade to a better shifter! Regardless, my baby functions as a full 21 speed bike now, even though I can tell there was a little bit of jerry-rigging going on when I switch gears on a hard incline. But maybe that's more of my struggle than the bike's! Both of the adjustments (and the fiddling with the brakes) were done at no charge. The kickstand with installation was $19--and I think the frame had to be drilled into for that ($6 for labor, $13 for part). I suspect this will be my go-to place, plus they were easy to get to via a little trail two blocks behind the building that seems to connect to a lot of parks. Any ability to avoid riding in the road is a plus. read more

To start off, parking was easy and convenient. Store was easy to find...when I went inside the store was very organized and had a good variety of products. I was greeted right away...I needed a tire for a stroller fixed. The guy was able to do it right then and there, and it didn't take him very long and the price was very reasonable. There really aren't a lot of options for servicing or purchasing a good Tri-bike in the Charlotte area. I was kind of surprised to find that out considering there is a rather large Tri community. Uptown Cycles a step above the rest when it comes to customer service and mechanics. There supply is a little lacking but they make up for it in friendliness and knowledge. Angela is a sweetheart and she told me all about there cycling classes that are completely computerized. Really cool. Give it a "spin" (that was awful) and stop in for a minute. read more

My first experience with UC was having them repair the worst ever tune-up I paid for in Ohio. I stopped into UC, last minute before riding in the 24 HOB, with a bike that wouldn't shift properly, whose chain would jump and in general, was riding poorly, again, all after I paid another shop in Ohio for a tune-up. UC was able to squeeze me into their schedule, did another tune-up on my bike, installed a K-edge and it's never ridden better ever. I also paid less for the UC tune-up than I did for the tune-up at the shop in my home town of Ohio. I know it sounds goofy, but, my local bike shop is now 400 miles from my house. read more

I took my girlfriend's vintage Schwinn here for a tune up. They called before completing the work and told me the bike only needed a "safety check" that would save me a little money. They could have easily charged for a tune up and I would have never known the difference. I really appreciate their honesty and clear explanation of their expert opinion regarding the bike's issues. Ran in here to grab a light for the future wife's bike since she's been riding in the mornings now when it's still dark, and they were super helpful. Quickly showed me what they had, and talked about the pros and cons of each set and got me what I needed without a lot of hassle. My fiancee has had her bike worked on here and liked what they did, so from that perspective I'd say they're pretty solid all around. I visited this bike shop about a year ago to look into buying a trail bike. The shop was busy but the owner was quick to say hello and said he'd be right with me as soon as he finished with his current customer. Once we got started I explained what kind of riding I wanted to do and my price range and he was very helpful in recommending some bikes. He also let me take one for a spin on the greenway which was a really nice gesture. I ended up going with a different bike that was not available at Uptown Cycles but I returned just a few days ago to have two bikes boxed up for shipping. Again I received excellent polite service at a reasonable price. They even allowed my friend to pick up my boxed bikes without me as I was scrambling through errands for a big move. I would strongly recommend you give this bike shop a try, they are top notch! read more

I visited Uptown Cycles on May 3rd 2017. I was looking for a bike that could be custom made to fit my body style considering I have arthritis in my knees and also back issues. I had picked out the bike that I wanted. It was $650 but needed to be customized for me. There was no available time during that day but I was told I would be called sometime late afternoon. I told them that would be fine. No one called therefore I called them the next day. Left another message also with no call back. I guess my money is not good here. I have since gone to a competitor and gave them my money. I am not impressed with this company. If you do not have time to call a customer back then you should say so and not promise to do so and then not. read more

I'm new to town but biking is a passion, so I knew when I moved I would have to find a new LBS. I came from such a great situation in my last city so I was stressed about this aspect of the move, sounds strange but those of you who are cyclists that love the sport but don't wrench a lot at home will understand the feeling. These guys have been GREAT, solid mechanics that know their stuff, even on mtn and suspension, fun group rides, low key atmosphere and no roadie snobery (I can say that cause I'm a roadie snob that also rides trails). I use to ride years ago and have been wanting to get back into cycling for a while. Chris and team has been so patient with me as I took my time to pull the trigger. I was vacationing in Charlotte during October of this year and wanted to do a couple of bike rides. I called the shop and reserved a rental online. When I arrived at the store, Chris and the guys not only provided me with a perfectly tuned Cannondale Synapse, but also assisted in selecting routes close to where I would be staying. I bought a hybrid bike from The Spirited Cyclists in Davidson because I could no longer ride my road bike due to physical limitations caused by a car accident. It was worth the trip down to Charlotte. I love Chris's demeanor and approach to my problem. He is an expert bike fitter and in a relatively short time corrected several issues that were causing me discomfort. I can't say enough good things about Chris. Do not trust this shop for repairs. The staff here is incompetent. I asked them to do a repair that takes about 5 minutes...one this shop has done twice before for me over the years... and the repair tech said he can't. The competent staff must be working somewhere else now, so I will be taking all future repairs somewhere else now as well. I suggest you do the same. read more

The store was nice, had competitive prices on new bikes and staff seemed knowledgeable. I purchased a new Specialized Mountain Bike off the floor. On my FIRST ride at the USNWC, however, the chain snapped off... it didn't derail, it actually broke/fell off the bike. A 20 minute search and a mile of hiking my bike out later I loaded up and headed home. I took the bike in to be fixed over the next weekend and picked it up on a Monday. I was called back in for a $21 bill, however, for the chain. I went to a local bike store for the first new bike I've purchased in a long time to start a relationship that I wouldn't have at a chain store... I asked the manager a few times for an explanation, and if they were sure that they wanted to charge me for the chain... they insisted that since it was a new chain, they had to charge me for it. They did "offer to cover the labor because specialized would compensate them". Thanks... the bike was new too when the chain fell off. read more
