The presentation and food placement could be mapped out better (food almost touching the walls and no thought for the line of people that will be present), but hey - it works. The Sushi is good and would be great if the competition in Maryland wasn't so tough (but it is). Also, they seem to wait until the last piece of a dish is gone before they will serve up a fresh platter of that particular item (come on, nobody wants the picked over food remains at a buffet). Wow, a good friend clued me in on this brunch - Umi has been around for as long as I can recall and I guess never looked into the Sunday specials. This has always been a fun place to go for pretty good quality Sushi and Umi has been around forever. Service is great, and you can usually walk in, and immediately be seated. By now, most of the staff members know us by name, and they are all amazing (especially Olya). Nothing but lettuce and enough for about 4 people. I also ordered wonton soup, and got a huge bowl. . .again way more than one person could eat. There was also not a lot of seasoning. We were looking for something light. . .some soup, salad and a couple sushi rolls. That and the rolls we got were OK. Not horrible, not great. My friend got a ramen noodle soup with crispy chicken. He expected the chicken in the soup, but it was only a large bowl of broth and noodles with a few scallions and a whole fried chicken breast on the side. It was not what he expected. Service was also not great and everything came out almost at the same time, so we couldn't eat things in the order we might have wanted without other things getting cold. I've said this before, but... Cockeysville, MD isn't exactly known for its Asian cuisine. That being said, Umi Sake is probably the best that the slim selection has to offer. While Umi Sake does dabble in fusion, it specializes in sushi. I dropped in around 7 pm on a Sunday and my brother and I ordered the beef yaki bop, Eight is Enough sushi, and cucumber tuna rolls. All of it was beautifully presented and served in generous portions. Great value for the price. The yaki bop was slightly below average. The meat was very, very chewy and the sauce was too thick. I wouldn't order it again, but, to be fair, Umi Sake specializes in Japanese cuisine, not Korean. Both orders of sushi were fantastic, though. I would highly recommend the Eight is Enough for all adventurous eaters! The dish is comprised of eight chef's choice sushi rolls. All of the rolls we received were eye-catching, delicious, and a little out of our comfort zone. It made for a really fun dining experience! There were three of us for an early dinner and we amassed huge quantities of food. We ordered four rolls and three tuna tartar, listed as "tuna martini". The rest of the ordering included individual miso soup, sushi regular, shrimp tempora, and lobster mango ceviche. The ceviche was an absolute home run, but the tuna martini was merely a sacrifice bunt. It had potential but was soft and lacked seasoning. The tempora was excellent, piping hot and crispy. The soup was super. The rolls were sweet heart (really well presented), moonraker (yes, we all commented on the movie character "Jaws"), hotter than hell (not really spicy), and an Indian roll. All rolls were good and there were no leftovers. There is plenty parking in the rear and one well-worn sign indicting a handicapped parking spot in front. Staff was knowledgeable and helpful. Beer is only by bottle or can. They have a dozen or so house special cocktails, most done with sake. It was a nice dining experience and an opportunity to try a different venue, but our favorite sushi-fusion restaurant located in Hunt Valley remains unchallenged. read more

However, each month I go through my credit card transactions to ensure what I authorize to charge is what actually is being charged. Sadly, they decided to add a few dollars to one of my receipts. Which I physically have. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, and called up there. It's only a few dollars, it's really not that big of a deal all things said and done. My first and last time here. Really sucks because the sushi was pretty good, however the service was horrendous. It was a rainy day so the place wasn't all that crowded. I had heard good things about this place as I used to work in the area and was excited to try it. Seems like a large restaurant but with a weird set up. Service was initially friendly and efficient. But our small sushi order took almost an hour to come out. It was a Friday night so I can understand the wait but then when it came out it was very disappointing. Seemed to have very different roll options that just weren't a good combo. I got a roll that had cold scallops dumped on top of it. After our food was dropped off we didn't see the server for another 45 min and eventually had to walk up to the hostess to get the check. Didn't even get the chance to order a second drink. They also have a checklist you can order off of but none of the specialty rolls were on it? Which of course we just told the waiter but it was just a strange set up. I have driven past Umi Sake at least 100 times in the last 3 years, but never thought to go in. Then after several recommendations from friends I finally dined at Umi Sake for lunch. As with most sushi joints, the options are fairly comprehensive, but Umi sake does feature many creative rolls not typical on other menus. The two rolls that were ravens themed sounded delicious, but we ended up settling on an eel/ avocado roll, salmon/avocado roll, spicy white tuna roll, volcano roll, and the tour of fusion roll. All the rolls were very good and decently sized, but the volcano roll and tour of fusion roll particularly stood out. The volcano roll has salmon, cucumber, topped with spicy sauce and then baked. Once baked the whole roll comes out perfectly crisp, yet not greasy. The five pieces that came to an order weren't enough, as we quickly devoured the sushi. The tour of fusion was a bit more intricate. The roll was made of spicy salmon and cucumber and then topped with cleanly sliced pieces of fresh salmon, tuna, white tuna and yellowtail. The roll is then finally garnished with multicolored roe and a wasabi mayo. In short, the roll was incredibly delicious - the perfect harmony of raw fish with delicate accompaniments. The prices are also fairly decent, most basic rolls range from $4.50 - 7.50 and then specialty rolls are between $8 - 16. A couple can have a very delicious and filling sushi meal for two for about $45.00. I believe the restaurant also has a Sunday brunch buffet with champagne, but don't quote me on that. Umi Sake is definitely one of the better sushi restaurant in Baltimore county, so go check it out! read more

I had the absolute best experience at this place! I'm so glad I checked some Yelp reviews before ordering, because you people know what you're talking about! The "No Name" is literally so perfect that they weren't even able to put a name to it, because no name that could possibly be created in the English language is deserving enough of being paired up with this delicious roll. It comes with a creamy crab sauce spread over the entire sushi. The sauce alone is delicious, so when paired with the shrimp, crabmeat and avocado (seriously, avocado makes everything better) it's absolutely perfect. Try it. Honestly I feel like I passed out and went to heaven for a short period of time. The "Mango Sunrise" was the sweetest of the three. It tastes like sunshine and fresh air stuffed inside a roll with a side of sweet mango. Considering it's size, it seriously packs a punch. The perfectly tempura covered shrimp goes great with the slice of delicious mango and sweet sauce on the top. The last roll we ordered was one we were still wavering on but our server, Henry assured is that because of the distinct contrast between the first two rolls we ordered, we would love it. Henry was right. Thank God for Henry! It was called the "Maui Waui." The name alone made me love it -- so fun! But the shrimp and crab meat alongside eel sauce, avocado and green onions made for a great roll. Granted, it was my least favorite of the three -- but that's just because nothing compares to No Name. Overall, I would rate the rolls in the exact order I wrote them. Umisake has taken this pipe dream and turned it into reality for a brief 3 hours every Sunday from 11-2. For a mere $17.95, each guest will be able to have at some of the best "buffet" sushi available, paired with your favorite breakfast staples, fresh fruit, lox and select deserts. In addition, the brunch price also entitles you to a non-alcoholic beverage of your choice, or if you prefer to go the hair of the dog route, $2.00 gets you a generous mimosa, bloody, sangria or their signature cocktail the Umi Sake Sunshine. A little about the sushi and why I consider it the best "buffet" sushi around. As sushi gains popularity among the Chinese buffet food scene in order to create a "one stop shop" for Asian cuisine, the quality of said sushi has always left a lot to be desired. Umi Sake strives to put out fresh, exotic rolls for it's customers. Hearty specialty rolls are always present in large quantities, many utilizing 2-3 different kinds of fish and garnished with panko or house sauces (typical $12-13 rolls on their normal menu). They also emphasize on always having a fully stocked tray of nigiri, ranging from salmon all the way to lightly seared maguro tuna with diced scallions on top. Unlike many sushi buffets that overload the rice and skimp on the fish to fill it's patrons, Umi legitimately takes it's normal sushi that is sold during normal hours, and offers that up to the brunch goers. It simply can't be beat for the price. As for the rest of the brunch buffet, though not as superlative as the sushi aspect, it still has plenty of tasty options. There is an omelette bar available with all the standard fixings for a fresh made omelette, smoked salmon lox accompanied by cream cheese and bagels, fresh cut fruit, your standard breakfast meats, hashbrowns pancakes and even eggs benedict, though were lacking (eggs were overpoached/hardboiled, Canadian bacon portion was very small and the hollandaise needs work). They also serve up a nice spread of Chinese food delicacies such as lo-mein, Szechuan chicken, crab rangoons, spring rolls and fried rice. As mentioned before, all of the other items are good, and should be supplemented into a round of feasting to break up the flow of maki into your stomach. Besides, how many time will you ever get the chance to chase sushi rolls with bacon?! All in all, Umi Sake puts on a great brunch service unlike anything else I have been to in Maryland. I highly encourage any sushi fanatic to give it a shot, especially those of us who can really put away sushi like myself (4th place in 2011 RA sushi eating contest with 96 pieces). I ordered a to-go lunch special from Umisake using their service on the website Beyondmenu, and stopped in to pick it up. Though they had a friendly greeting and a clean space, the service was quite rude once I asked to pick my food up. I'd ordered the two-roll lunch special, which Beyondmenu notes as coming with seaweed salad and miso soup. When they handed me the bag, I asked if the soup was in there and they curtly said that soup was for dine-in only. I thanked them for the info and said that they should probably update the Beyondmenu information. Since Beyondmenu is only for pickup/delivery, there's no way someone ordering would be dining in, so it should just not have the soup listed. I started to ask how much adding a miso soup would be, but they just told me the total for what I'd ordered. I was also disappointed in the fish and roll quality - when spicy rolls are half cucumber, I really wish that they'd be listed as "spicy tuna and cucumber roll" because I think it'd be a lot more accurate. The tuna was a little fishy, and though it wasn't oily, it was not a good flavor. The salmon was unidentifiable under the sticky sweet sauce that was poured over the roll. Very disappointing, and also definitely half cucumber! Rice was okay, but not as delicate and nicely flavored as some of the other local options. Seaweed salad was disappointingly small - definitely a tiny scoop. It was _smaller than the portion of ginger_ - seriously. I've been here a couple of times now. Each time the place has been nearly filled to capacity and usually a small wait. The sushi was fresh, tasty, and well presented. The staff was friendly and fast. Though not as fast as the 3 to 4 chefs behind the counter furiously making all the food though. The Sunday brunch was interesting... Last time I was in Baltimore on a Sunday we had trouble finding sushi places that were open earlier in the day if at all, so when my friend said he had found reviews mentioning a sushi brunch at Umi Sake we decided to head over. We arrived ~12:30 on a Sunday and were seated immediately. The place is a little strange as the parking lot is in the back, so it doesn't look like there's really any parking until you walk in. When you do get inside there is kind of a lobby area then a sushi bar area, and a longer dining area down to the left. The setup might night even cross my mind as strange if I came for lunch or dinner when they weren't doing buffet style, but as a buffet it was a little cramped. It took a little while for our waiter to come up to us, we could have just hit the buffet right away of course but wanted to get our drink order in first. I opted to take advantage of the $2 mimosas, placed an order, and headed to the buffet. So what exactly does a sushi brunch buffet entail? Around the sushi bar there was a large salad with ginger dressing on the side, various hot and cold sushi rolls (by that I mean some had dynamite on top), a crab salad, peel and eat shrimp, and then setup beside the sushi bar was a hot bar area with french toast and pancakes as well as lo mein and fried rice. There was also an omelet station but no one was manning it so not sure if it was make your own or if you had to ask...I wasn't interested in the omelet so I didn't inquire. Overall everything was ok. The sushi wasn't kept all that well stocked, where it was that the sushi bar was having trouble keeping up or they were trying to limit consumption I'm not sure, but the first time I went up with my plate almost everything was empty sushi wise and I had to wait around. My friend had to stalk on her second round, so not ideal when you think of what you want from a buffet. The sushi was average at best, nothing wowed me. In terms of the hot food there wasn't much I could eat as they added chicken to the fried rice and lo mein. I know a lot of people would think of that as a benefit but since I don't eat chicken it pretty much ruled out all the hot food options for me. I did try the spring rolls and crab rangoon, again both pretty standard. For the price ~$20 it was probably worth it overall, though I don't think I'm dying to return either. I might be spoiled by the sushi buffet options I have in South Florida, and this one was just a little lackluster. read more

I have only been to Umi Sake for their brunch, so that is all my review is based on. That being said, the brunch is very nice. We were there today in a large group, probably 15 or so. The staff was very friendly and attentive with drinks as clearing plates. The buffet itself has a pretty large variety. There is an omelet station, pancakes, French toast, hash browns, and bacon. There are also things like orange chicken, egg rolls, cream cheese wontons, and lo mein in the "hot" area. Alongside the sushi bar, there were bagels and smoked salmon, with cream cheese and veggies. There was fresh fruit, seaweed and imitation crab salad, and little cheesecake bites as a dessert option. The sushi they put out for the brunch is really good. They have some more basic rolls, like california, shrimp tempura, and philly, but they also do some nice special rolls- one was even a veggie option! It was mushrooms with avocado on top and some sort of spicy sauce (probably mayo based). They also had a great selection of nigiri, with salmon, tuna, and eel. There is pretty much something for everyone, and I thought the price was reasonable too. Ours came out to $25/person, but I'm not sure of the regular price. I took one star off for 2 relatively minor things- the parking lot is way too small and it's kind of a free for all- I ended up parking in front of their dumpster this AM because I had no idea where else to go. The only other thing is that the buffet and restaurant area are really packed in tight, so just something to keep in mind (especially if you have kids in strollers).
